350°C - Thermal Stability of Austempered Ductile Iron

The thermal stability of an ADI has been studied by isothermal aging at 350°C for 150 hours, measuring the amount of retained austenite and its carbon content by X-ray diffractometry. The influence of different austempering treatments, carried out at temperatures between 300 and 450°C (300, 330, 360, 410 and 450°C) and holding times between 15 and 60 minutes (15, 30, 45, 60), was considered. Thermal stability depends on whether austempering temperature is higher or lower than the ageing one. Thermal stability increases by increasing austempering temperatures, from 300° to 410°C. Samples treated at 410° and 450° show a lower austenite decomposition than samples at 300-330-360°C. A drop in stability is shown by increasing the austempering temperature from 410° to 450°C. The results have been interpreted on the basis of the austenite stability out of the processing window, which in turn depends on the austempering parameters.

A long-term （about nine months） isothermal degradation experiment of two different commercial polylactide （PLA） samples used for food packaging was carried out at a relatively low temperature （423 K）. Thermooxidative degradations of the same polymers were carried out in a thermogravimetric （TG） analyser, at higher temperatures （453 K 〈 T 〈 523 K）, under isothermal heating conditions. The obtained set of experimental TG data was used to determine the apparent activation energy （Ea） of degradation through two isothermal kinetic methods. The results from long-term experiment evidenced considerable mass loss for both PLA samples in the investigated period, but the experimental data were not in agreement with those from the short-term degradations at higher temperatures, thus suggesting a different degradation kinetics, and, then a low reliability of the lifetime predictions for polymers in service or degradation forecasts for the end of their life based on experiments at higher temperatures.

According to recommended conditions two bio-samples, tea leave and flour, are prepared with different methods: grounding into powder and reducing to ash, then they were analyzed by γ ray spectrometry. Remarkable difference was shown between the measured values of tea samples prepared with these different methods. One of the reasons may be that the method of reducing to ash makes some nuclides lost. Compared with the "non-destructive" method of grounding into powder, the method of reducing to ash can be much more sensible to the loss of some nuclides. The probable reasons are discussed for the varied influences of different preparation methods of tea leave and flour samples.

Design of passive fault-tolerant flight controller against actuator failures

The problem of designing passive fault-tolerant flight controller is addressed when the normal and faulty cases are prescribed. First of all, the considered fault and fault-free cases are formed by polytopes. As considering that the safety of a post-fault system is directly related to the maximum values of physical variables in the system, peak-to-peak gain is selected to represent the relationships among the amplitudes of actuator outputs, system outputs, and reference commands. Based on the parameter dependent Lyapunov and slack methods, the passive fault-tolerant flight controllers in the absence/presence of system uncertainty for actuator failure cases are designed, respectively. Case studies of an airplane under actuator failures are carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach

Experimental rigs for testing components of advanced industrial applications

This paper presents experimental rigs of the Research Centre for the Mechanics of Turbomachinery of the department of Civil and industrial Engineering of the University of Pisa. Most of them were designed and constructed to allow investigations of real machine components and to furnish more realistic results than basic tribological test rigs. Tilting pad journal bearings, as well as gears and complete gearboxes for advanced industrial applications, can be tested using the rigs described in the paper. A novel test rig with a power rating of approximately 1 MW allows investigations of the static and dynamic characteristics of high-performance tilting pad journal bearings for turbomachinery. A twin disc machine and closed loop gear test rig are used to investigate the different kinds of wear mechanisms occurring in gears. Functional and durability tests on planetary gearboxes for new turbo-fan engines could be performed using another novel large test rig. A circulating power configuration was adopted for most of the rigs so that only the power needed to cover the friction losses has to be supplied, while the circulating power can be more than 20 times higher. All the test rigs include very complex load applications and lubrication plants, as well as dedicated control and data acquisition systems. The rigs and related plants were designed and constructed through strong and fruitful collaborations between the university and some large and small–medium companies. Despite some limitations in the publication of the results as a result of the industrial sensitivity of the data, the synergy among these different actors was stimulating and fundamental for the realization of new advanced industrial applications.

Postmenopausal women, who have reduced circulating estrogen levels, are more prone to develop obesity and related metabolic diseases than premenopausal women. The absence of safe and effective treatments for postmenopausal obesity has changed the focus to natural products as alternative remedies. Total salvianolic acids(TSA) are the major water-soluble ingredients of Danshen. Salvianolic acid(SA) is the major constituent of the TSA. Salvianolic acids, including TSA and SA, are widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. In the present study, ovariectomized rats and LO2 cells were used to study the effects of salvianolic acids on body weight gain and hepatic steatosis. Salvianolic acids reduced ovariectomy(OVX)-induced body weight gain, attenuated the expressions of hepatic lipogenic genes, such as sterol regulatory element binding protein(SREBP)1, fatty acid synthase(FAS), and stearoyl-CoA desaturase(SCD)1, and decreased the liver triglyceride(TG) and total cholesterol(TC). For the molecular mechanisms, OVX and high glucose-induced phosphorylation of signal transducer and activator of transcription(STAT)-3 was inhibited by salvianolic acids treatment. In LO2 cells, inhibition of STAT-3 by siRNA attenuated the increased expression of SREBP1 and TG induced by high glucose. Salvianolic acids reduced the upregulation of SREBP1 and TG induced by high glucose in LO2 cells. In conclusion, these findings illustrated that salvianolic acids markedly alleviated the lipid metabolism disorders and protected against the postmenopausal obesity. The underlying mechanism was probably associated with the regulation of STAT-3 signaling.
