Effects of COVID-19 fear and anxiety on attitudes towards complementary and alternative medicine use in women with gynecological cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic

Objective:Patients with gynecological cancer commonly use complementary and alternative medicine(CAM)methods to cope with the disease.However,despite the existence of treatment strategies,the effect of fear and anxiety caused by coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic on attitudes about CAM use is unclear.This study was carried out to investigate the effect of fear and anxiety experienced by patients with gynecological cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic on their attitudes towards the use of CAM.Methods:This is a cross-sectional and descriptive study that included 177 women with gynecological cancer;participants were recruited from a social networking site for cancer patients in Turkey between June and December 2021.Data were collected using an online survey that included the Personal Information Form,the Fear of COVID-19 Scale,the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale,and the Attitude Towards Holistic Complementary and Alternative Medicine Scale.Descriptive statistics,t-test,Pearson’s correlation test,and simple linear and multiple regression analyses were performed to analyze the data.Results:During the pandemic,55.4%of the participants reported using CAM methods,but only 22.6%were using CAM before the pandemic.The participants who used CAM during the pandemic also scored higher on the fear of COVID-19 and coronavirus anxiety scales(20.69±5.37 and 13.09±6.29,respectively)compared to the participants who did not use CAM(9.29±2.72 and 6.35±2.06,respectively).Fear of COVID-19 accounted for 52%of the CAM attitude score,while coronavirus anxiety accounted for 15%of the CAM attitude score.Fear of COVID-19 and coronavirus anxiety together accounted for 53%of CAM attitude.Conclusion:Gynecological cancer patients with high levels of COVID-19-related anxiety and fear during the pandemic used CAM more.Given that the psychological effects of the pandemic will continue in the coming years,CAM use should be evaluated as a coping strategy,especially due to the COVID-19-related anxiety and fear experienced by patients with gynecologica

Effect of lower leg compression during cesarean section on post-spinal hypotension and neonatal hemodynamic parameters: nonrandomized controlled clinical trial

Objectives: This study aimed to determine the effect of lower leg compression during cesarean section (CS) on post-spinal hypotension (PSH) and neonatal hemodynamic parameters.Methods: This study is a nonrandomized controlled clinical trial conducted in the cesarean delivery unit of the National Medical institute,Damanhour,Egypt.The sample included 120 parturients (60 intervention and 60 control).The researchers developed three tools for data collection: sociodemographic data and reproductive history interview schedule,electronic monitoring of maternal hemodynamic parameters,and neonatal hemodynamic assessment sheet.All parturients received ordinary preoperative care.For the intervention group,a long elastic stocking (ordinary pressure 20-30 mmHg,1 mmHg =0.133 kPa) was applied on both legs during cesarean section.The control group received the same care without the elastic stocking.Results: Systolic blood pressure,diastolic blood pressure,and mean arterial blood pressure were significantly higher in the intervention group throughout the entire operation period except in the last 5 -15 min.Heart rate was significantly lower in the intervention group.Only 13.3% of the intervention group took ephedrine compared with 45% of the control group.Apgar score was higher among neonates of intervention group compared with the control group at 1 min.Neonatal acidosis was significantly higher in the control group than in the contral group.Conclusion: Lower leg compression technique can effectively reduce PSH and neonatal acidosis.

The effect of risk perception and COVID‑19 anxiety in pregnancy on decision‑making via the Internet and prenatal care quality:A cross‑sectional multivariate analysis

Background:Risk perception and COVID‑19 anxiety in pregnant women restrict access to health services,cause pregnant women to resort to alternative channels such as the Internet,and affect prenatal care quality(PCQ)negatively.Purpose:The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of risk perception and COVID‑19 anxiety in pregnancy on decision‑making via the Internet(DMI)and PCQ with multivariate analysis.Materials and Methods:This cross‑sectional study was conducted with 406 pregnant women selected using the convenience sampling method in a training and research hospital,in Turkey.The data were collected using the information form,the perception of pregnancy risk questionnaire,the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale,the DMI Scale,and the PCQ Scale.The data obtained were subject to descriptive analysis and the multivariate analysis of variance.Results:Approximately 24.9%of the pregnant women were found to have a high perception of risk and 18%had symptoms of COVID‑19 anxiety.Pregnant women with high COVID‑19 anxiety and a higher perception of risk perceived the Internet as less influential for decision‑making(P<0.05).Pregnant women with a high‑risk perception had lower PCQ(P<0.05).Conclusion:The findings can be used to enhance mental health and resilience in pregnant women and to formulate appropriate intervention strategies.

Factors associated with premenstrual syndrome of emergency nurse: A multicenter study in China

Objective:To study the factors associated with premenstrual syndrome(PMS)in emergency department(ED)nurses.Methods:A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted in female ED nurses in China.Data gathering questionnaires included the Daily Record of Severity of Problems,Chinese Nurses Stressor Scale,Social Support Rating Scale,and Self-Rating Anxiety Scale.All questionnaires were used to assess the symptoms prospectively over 2 months.Results:A total of 289 ED nurses were recruited.The incidence of PMS was 67.47%.The most common symptoms were tiredness(76.90%),anger(76.90%),restlessness(75.40%),snoring(69.20%).Univariate analysis showed that the BMI and occupational stress score was significantly higher,and the age was significantly younger in the PMS group compared with the non-PMS group.According to the multiple linear regression,the symptoms of PMS were positively associated with the occupational stress score and anxiety score,and negatively with the level of education received.Conclusions:occupational stress,anxiety,and education level may associated with the occurrence of PMS in ED nurses.

Exploratory study on resilience and its influencing factors among hospital nurses in Guangzhou,China

Background:Currently,building resilience in nurses is recognized as an important factor that helps maintain their health and stay in their profession;thus,identifying which factors can help them build resilience is necessary.Methods:A cross-sectional survey design was used,and 1356 nurses from 11 general hospitals in Guangzhou,China,were assessed using the Chinese version of the Conner-Davidson Resilience Scale,the General Self-Efficacy Scale,the Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire,and the Job Stress Scale of Chinese nurses.The demographic characteristics of participants were also gathered.Results:The mean total score of nurses' resilience is 59.99 (SD 13.59),which was significantly lower (P < 0.001) than that of the general people in China.The regression analysis affirmed that the factors which influence the resilience of nurses include self-efficacy,coping style,job stress,and education level (R2 =49.4%,P < 0.001).Conclusion:Nurses had low resilience.They could not effectively cope with job challenges and recover from adversity.Strengthening self-efficacy,choosing active coping,decreasing job stress,and enhancing educational training can effectively improve their resilience.

Baduanjin exercise improved premenstrual syndrome symptoms in Macau women

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of Baduanjin,a traditional Chinese medical exercise, on improving premenstrual syndrome(PMS) symptoms in women.METHODS: Forty reproductive age women with PMS in Macau practiced standardized Baduanjin exercise for three menstrual cycles. A questionnaire,the daily record of severity of problems(DRSP), was used to measure symptom severity. DRSP was filled out every days tarting from the last cycle before exercise(i.e., the first menstrual cycle) to the third cycle after exercise initiation(i.e., the fourth menstrual cycle). The total scores and the scores of each item during the 5 premenstrual days and follicular phase(5-9 postmenstrual days)were calculated.RESULTS: After exercise, the total DRSP scores dur-ing the 5 premenstrual days and differences in the total DRSP scores between the 5 premenstrual days and the follicular phase were both significantly reduced. Of note, the physical symptom total scores in the 5 premenstrual days and the differences between its total score in the 5 premenstrual days and in the follicular phase were both significantly reduced. The differences between the total scores of depressed mood, anxious mood, loss of interest,and reduction in social activity during the 5 premenstrual days and the follicular phase were also reduced.CONCLUSION: Baduanjin exercise was able to improve the mental and especially the physical symptoms of PMS.

Smartphone dependency and its impact on academics among medical and nursing students: A cross-sectional study

Objective:This study aimed to assess smartphone dependency and its impact on academics among medical and nursing students.Materials and Methods:A cross-sectional study was carried out on Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery(MBBS)and Bachelor of Science in nursing(BScN)students in a medical teaching institute.The Smartphone Dependency Scale and self-structured questionnaire on impact of smartphone on academics were used to assess smartphone dependency and its impact on academics.A total of 436 students were selected using the total enumerative sampling technique.Data were analyzed using the descriptive(frequency,percentage,mean,and standard deviation)and inferential(t-test,Chi-square test)statistics.Results:The mean age of students was 20.6±1.29 years,81%were females,and the mean body mass index score was 21.59±3.41 kg/m2.The mean impact on academics and smartphone dependency scores was 19.92±7.01 and 48.58±11.46,respectively.The impact on academics had a significant association with student category(P<0.001)and gender(P<0.001).A significant association was found between the impact on academics(P=0.003)and smartphone dependency(P=0.05)with studying class.Conclusion:The use of smartphones is more among medical students.Students studying in the first and second years are found to be more dependent on smartphone,which caused a serious impact on their academics.Smart appliances have become mandatory in this era of technology,and it is not possible to stop its usage but negative impact of smartphones on students’academic performance needs to be addressed.Therefore,it is mandatory to organize educational seminars and workshops to promote the appropriate use of smartphones.

The barriers of joining in vitro fertilization programs among infertile couples in developing countries:A scoping review

Objective:To determine the barriers of joining in-vitro fertilization(IVF)programs among infertile couples in developing countries.Methods:This study assessed infertile couples and the barriers or associated factors resulting in delayed decision-making of joining IVF program by searching databases PubMed,ScienceDirect,EBSCO,ClinicalKey,and Cochrane Library from inception until December 31,2021.Additional search strategies were snowballing literature search and citation tracking.Results:Eleven articles were included in the scoping review.The cost was the greatest barrier of joining IVF program.Limited access and lack of assisted reproductive technology centers,few qualified infertility trained staff,insufficient government support,low priority in government policy,along with sociocultural factors,such as religion and false beliefs or myths were also majorly considered to be associated obstacles.Conclusions:The main barrier associated with IVF program among infertile couples in developing countries is the high cost of the IVF services.

Deltonin enhances gastric carcinoma cell apoptosis and chemosensitivity to cisplatin via inhibiting PI3K/AKT/mTOR and MAPK signaling

BACKGROUND As an active ingredient derived from Dioscorea zingiberensis C.H.Wright,deltonin has been reported to show anti-cancer effects in a variety of malignancies.AIM To investigate the role and mechanism of action of deltonin in promoting gastric carcinoma(GC)cell apoptosis and chemosensitivity to cisplatin.METHODS The GC cell lines AGS,HGC-27,and MKN-45 were treated with deltonin and then subjected to flow cytometry and 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-3,5-diphenyltet-razolium bromide assays for cell apoptosis and viability determination.Western blot analysis was conducted to examine alterations in the expression of apoptosis-related proteins(Bax,Bid,Bad,and Fas),DNA repair-associated proteins(Rad51 and MDM2),and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B/mammalian target of the rapamycin(PI3K/AKT/mTOR)and p38-mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK)axis proteins.Additionally,the influence of deltonin on GC cell chemosensitivity to cisplatin was evaluated both in vitro and in vivo.RESULTS Deltonin treatment weakened viability,enhanced apoptosis,and dampened DNA repair in GC cell lines in a dose-dependent pattern.Furthermore,deltonin mitigated PI3K,AKT,mTOR,and p38-MAPK phosphorylation.HS-173,an inhibitor of PI3K,attenuated GC cell viability and abolished deltonin inhibition of GC cell viability and PI3K/AKT/mTOR and p38-MAPK pathway activation.Deltonin also promoted the chemosensitivity of GC cells to cisplatin via repressing GC cell proliferation and growth and accelerating apoptosis.CONCLUSION Deltonin can boost the chemosensitivity of GC cells to cisplatin via inactivating p38-MAPK and PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling.

Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of Casticin (CAS) combination with Cisplatin (DDP) in sub-toxic concentration on apoptosis of human ovarian cancer HO-8910 cells in vitro and unravel the associated mechanisms. Methods: Human ovarian cancer HO-8910 cells were cultured in vitro. The inhibitory effect of CAS combination with DDP in sub-toxic concentration on viability of human ovarian cancer HO-8910 cells was evaluated by the MTT assay. Morphological changes of cell apoptosis were detected by Hoechst 33258 staining assay. Cell apoptosis rate was analyzed by flow cytometry. The protein expression level was analyzed by Western blot. Results: CAS in sub-toxic concentration and DDP in sub-toxic concentration could slightly inhibit Human ovarian cancer HO-8910 cells, but CAS combination with DDP in sub-toxic concentration significantly inhibited the growth of HO-8910 cells, and growth inhibition rate was increased drastically compared with the control group (P﹤0.01), and the inhibiting effect showed synergistic action. Human ovarian cancer HO-8910 cells showed the typical morphological changes of apoptosis and apoptosis rate markedly increased when they were exposed to CAS combination with DDP in sub-toxic concentration for 48 h. Western blot showed that the expression of bcl-2 protein was down-regulated and protein level of caspase-3 was activated by CAS combination with DDP in sub-toxic concentration. Conclusion: CAS combination with DDP in sub-toxic concentration could inhibit the cells growth and lead to cell apoptosis in human ovarian cancer HO-8910 cells. And the down-regulation of bcl-2 protein expression and activation of caspase-3 protein might contribute to CAS combination with DDP in sub-toxic concentration in human cancer HO-8910 cells.
