Current technical aspects of oncological hepatic surgery

BACKGROUND： With the recent advances in oncological hepatic surgery, major liver resections became more widely utilized procedures. The era of modern hepatic surgery witnessed improvements in patients care in preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative aspects. This significantly improved surgical outcomes regarding morbidity and mortality. This review article focuses on the recent advances in oncological hepatic *** SOURCES： This review includes only data from peer-reviewed articles and journals. Pub Med database was utilized as the primary source of the supporting literature to this review article on the latest advances in oncological hepatic *** and high sensitivity search strategies were performed to search related studies exhaustively up till June 2016. We critically and independently assessed over 50 recent publications written on this topic according to the selection criteria and quality assessment standard. We paid particular attention to the studies published in high impact journals that address the use of the surgical techniques mentioned in the articles in well-known ***： Among all utilized approaches aiming at the preoperative assessment of the liver function, Child-TurcottePugh classification remains the most reliable tool correlating with survival outcome. Although the primary radiological tools including ultrasonography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging remain on top of the menu of tests utilized in assessment of focal hepatic lesions, intraoperative ultrasonography projects to be a powerful additional tool in terms of sensitivity and specificity compared to the other conventional techniques in assessment of the liver inthe operative setting, a procedure that can change the surgical strategy in 27.2% of the cases and consequently improve the oncological surgical outcome. Colorectal cancer burden and trends:Comparison between China and major burden countries in the world

Validity and reliability study of Turkish version on low vision with quality of life questionnaire

Differences in lead isotopic fingerprints between blood, hair and organs in lead-poisoned rats

Lead isotopic ratios of biosamples such as blood, hair and teeth are used as "fingerprints" to trace and identify sources of lead pollution in the environment. However, the reliability of this technique has not been confirmed. In previous studies, we investigated the differences in lead isotopic ratios between blood, hair, and organs from the same human body. To explore the relation-ship between isotopic ratios in environmental lead and biosamples, and to investigate the influence of exposure dose, rats were exposed to 0, 30, 60, and 120 mg/kg body weight of lead acetate every day for 4 weeks by intragastric administration. Lead iso- topic ratios of blood, hair, liver, kidney and femur in rats, as well as that of the test substance lead acetate, were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. There were significant differences (P<0.05) in lead isotopic fingerprints between blood, hair, and tissues. Lead fingerprints of blood were influenced by lead exposure dose, while those of other tissues and organs were generally not. Its reliability and availability indicated that blood, but not hair, was thus a suitable biomarker for environmental lead exposure. The results of this study provide the scientific rationale for the use of lead isotopic ratios for the identification of human lead pollution sources.

Prevalence of refractive errors among primary school children in a tropical area,Southeastern Iran

Objective: To determine the prevalence of refractive errors among primary school children in Zahedan District, Southeastern Iran, as a tropical ***: In this cross sectional study, a total of 400 students were selected randomly using multi-stage sampling technique. Myopia was defined as spherical equivalent(SE)of-0.5 diopter(D) or more, hyperopia was defined as SE of +2.00 D or more and a cylinder refraction greater than 0.75 D was considered astigmatism. Anisometropia was defined as a difference of 1 D or more between two eyes. Cycloplegic refractive status was measured using auto-refractometer(Topcon 8800). Data were analyzed using SPSS,version 22 software ***: Mean ± SD of SE was(1.71 ± 1.16) D. A total of 20 students [6.3%, 95%confidence interval(CI): 3.96%–9.64%] were myopic(-0.5 D), 186 students(58.1%,95% CI: 52.50%–63.56%) were hyperopic( +2.00 D) and 114 students(35.6%, 95%CI: 30.43%–41.18%) were emmetropic. The prevalence of astigmatism( 0.75 D)among students was 3.4%(95% CI: 1.82%–6.25%). Anisometropia of 1 D or more was found in 21.3%(95% CI: 16.98%–26.23%) of the studied population. The prevalence of refractive errors was higher among girls than boys(73.1% vs. 55.6%, P = 0.001), but it was not significantly different among different age groups(P = 0.790).Conclusions: Refractive errors affect a sizable portion of students in Zahedan. Although myopia is not very prevalent, the high rate of hyperopia in the studied population emphasizes its need for attention.

Effects of aromatherapy with Rosa damascena on nulliparous women's pain and anxiety of labor during first stage of labor

Background： Reducing labor pain and anxiety is one of the most important goals of maternity care. Objective： This study aimed to assess the effects of aromatherapy with Rosa damascena on pain and anxiety in the first stage of labor among nulliparous women. Design, setting, participants and interventions： This was a randomized clinical trial of 110 nulliparous women. The eligible participants were randomly assigned to two groups of aromatherapy and control in an Iranian maternity hospital. The participants received 0.08 mL of Rosa damascena essence in the aro- matherapy group and 0.08 mL of normal saline in the control group, every 30 min. Pain was measured 3 times, once each at three stages of cervical dilation （4-5, 6-7, and 8-10 cm）. Anxiety was measured twice, once each at two stages of cervical dilation （4-7 and 8-10 cm）. The tools for data collection were the Spielberger anxiety questionnaire, numerical pain rating scale, demographic and obstetric questionnaire, and an observational checklist. Data analyses included the t-test, Mann-Whitney U test and Chi-square test. Main outcome measures： Severity of labor pain and severity of anxiety were used as primary outcome measures. Labor and delivery characteristics （including number of contractions, duration of contractions in second stage, Bishop score, augmentation by oxytocin, Apgar score, and mode of delivery）, demographic characteristics, and fertility information were used as secondary outcome measures. Results： Pain severity in the group receiving aromatherapy with R. damoscena was significantly lower than in the control group after treatment at each pain assessment （cervical dilation of 4-5, 6-7, and 8-10 cm; P 〈 0.05）. Anxiety levels were also significantly lower in the treatment group than in the control group after treatment at each time of measurement （cervical dilation of 4-7 and 8-10 cm; P 〈 0.05）. Schwann cells originating from skin-derived precursors promote peripheral nerve regeneration in rats

Artificial guidance channels containing Schwann cells can promote the regeneration of injured peripheral nerve over long distances. However, primary Schwann cells are not suitable for autotransplantation. Under specific conditions, skin-derived progenitors can be induced to dif- ferentiate into Schwann cells. Therefore, adult rat dorsal skin （dermis）-derived progenitors were isolated and induced to differentiate with DMEM/F12 containing B27, neuregulin 1, and for- skolin. Immunofluorescence staining and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction （RT- PCR） confirmed that the resultant cells were indeed Schwann cells. Artificial guidance channels containing skin-derived progenitors, Schwann cells originating from skin-derived progenitors, or primary Schwann cells were used to bridge 5 mm sciatic nerve defects. Schwann cells originating from skin-derived progenitors significantly promoted sciatic nerve axonal regeneration. The sig- nificant recovery of injured rat sciatic nerve function after the transplantation of Schwann cells originating from skin-derived progenitors was confirmed by electromyogram. The therapeutic effect of Schwann cells originating from skin-derived progenitors was better than that of skin-de- rived progenitors. These findings indicate that Schwann cells originating from skin-derived precursors can promote peripheral nerve regeneration in rats.

Non-coding regions of the Ebola virus genome contain indispensable phylogenetic and evolutionary information

We compared the numbers of nucleotide substitutions occurring in the non-coding regions and coding regions of Ebola virus genomes and found that non-coding regions contain indispensable phylogenetic and evolutionary information. The omission of genetic data from non-coding regions can lead to unreliable phylogenies and inaccurate estimates of evolutionary parameters.
