Effect of elevated temperature and silica sand particle size on minimum fluidization velocity in an atmospheric bubbling fluidized bed

The impact of temperature and particle size on minimumfluidizing velocity was studied and analyzed in a small pilot scale of bubbling fluidized bed *** study was devoted to providing some data about fluidization to the literature under high temperature *** experiments were carried out to evaluate the minimum fluidizing velocity over a vast range of temperature levels from 20℃ to 850℃ using silica sand with a particle size of 300-425μm,425-500μm,500-600μm,and 600-710μ***,the variation in the minimumfluidized voidage was determined experimentally at the same *** experimental data revealed that the Umf directly varied with particle size and inversely with temperature,whileεmf increases slightly with temperature based on the measurements of height at incipient ***,for all particle sizes used in this test,temperatures above 700℃ has a marginal effect on *** results were compared with many empirical equations,and it was found that the experimental result is still in an acceptable range of empirical equations *** which,our findings are not well predicted by the widely accepted correlations reported in the ***,a new predicted equation has been developed that also accounts for the affecting of mean particle size in addition to other parameters.A good mean relative deviation of 5.473% between the experimental data and the predicted values was estimated from the correlation of the effective dimensionless ***,the experimental work revealed that the minimum fluidizing velocity was not affected by the height of the bed even at high temperature.

Automatic evaluation of speech impairment caused by wearing a dental appliance

In dentistry, speech evaluation is important for appropriate orofacial dysfunction rehabilitation. The speech intelligibility test is often used to assess patients’ speech, and it involves an evaluation by human listeners. However, the test has certain shortcomings, and an alternative method, without a listening procedure, is needed. The purpose of this study was to test the applicability of an automatic speech intelligibility test system using a computerized speech recognition technique. Speech of 10 normal subjects, when wearing a dental appliance, was evaluated using an automatic speech intelligibility test system that was developed using computerized speech recognition software. The results of the automatic test were referred to as the speech recognition scores. The Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to analyze differences in the results of the test between the following 2 conditions: with the palatal plate in place and with the palatal plate removed. Spearman correlation coefficients were used to evaluate whether the speech recognition score correlated with the result of conventional intelligibility test. The speech recognition score was significantly decreased when wearing the plate (z = -2.807, P = 0.0050). The automatic evaluation results positively correlated with that of conventional evaluation when wearing the appliance (r = 0.729, P = 0.017). The automatic speech testing system may be useful for evaluating speech intelligibility in denture wearers.

Liquid-metals-induced formation of MXene/polyacrylamide composite organohydrogels for wearable flexible electronics

Organohydrogels have demonstrated superior environmental adaptability and frost resistance compared to conventional hydrogels,thereby prompting considerable interests in the development and design of innovative ***,we report an effective one-pot method for fabricating MXene/polyacrylamide(MXene/PAM)composite organohydrogel(MAOH)by employing Ga liquid metals(Ga LMs)as a highly reactive component in the induced free radical polymerization reaction,without the need for additional heating or cross-linking *** synthetic protocol addresses the time-consuming and organic solvent waste concerns associated with traditional solvent displacement methods for organohydrogel *** incorporation of MXene not only highly enhances the conductivity but also confers improved mechanical properties of *** MAOH exhibits excellent environmental adaptability(>7 d),sustained moisture retention,remarkable self-healing capabilities,and outstanding mechanical properties under low temperatures(-20℃).It demonstrates exceptional performance in micro-motion monitoring,rapid response time(125 ms),superior stretchability,and a broad range of strains(0.3%–600%).Therefore,the designed MAOH has great potential for applications in diverse fields such as prosthetics,electronic skin,human–machine interaction,and smart terminals.

Assessment of orthotic needs in Iranian veterans with ankle and foot disorders

Background: War-related traumas can lead to orthopedic and neurological disorders in victims. However, the scope of such disorders may expand months or even years after the trauma. Orthotic treatment as a rehabilitation process aims to enable people with disabilities to reach and maintain their optimal physical, sensory, intellectual, psychological, and social functional levels. This study aimed to investigate the rate of using orthoses among Iranian veterans with neuromuscular and skeletal disorders of the ankle and foot. Furthermore, the priorities of orthotic treatment in those veterans were ***: This qualitative study was a national health needs assessment conducted in 11 provinces of Iran during 2011–2016. A stakeholder research group was established to survey the veterans in respect to their demographic variables, activities of daily living, current health conditions, and rate of using ***: Overall, 907 of the 1124 veteran participants completed the survey(response rate: 80.7%). Most of the veterans were men(97.7%), and their age and disability rate were 52.07±8.13 years and 31.92%±14.93%, respectively. Nearly 42% of the veterans had experience in using orthoses on a daily and weekly basis. As physical ambulation was the main problematic activity in veterans, most of them were using medical shoes and foot orthoses. Nearly 37% of veterans were in need of some type of lower limb orthoses on the contralateral side to compensate for their hip inequality. In sequential order, the most in need orthoses for veterans were foot orthoses(n=538), medical shoes(n=447), lower limb orthoses on the contralateral side(n=320), spinal orthoses(n=273), and upper limb orthoses(n=86).Conclusion: In spite of the high demands for orthoses among Iranian veterans with ankle and foot disorders, the use of orthoses is insufficient. Comparison between the new mechanistic and the chaos scale-up methods for gas-solid fluidized beds

The chaotic scale-up approach by matching the Kolmogorov entropy(E_K) proposed by Schouten et al.(1996) was assessed in two geometrically similar gas–solid fluidized bed columns of 0.14 and 0.44 m *** used four conditions of our validated new mechanistic scale-up method based on matching the radial profiles of gas holdup where the local dimensionless hydrodynamic parameters were similar as measured by advanced measurement *** experimental conditions were used to evaluate the validity of the chaotic scale-up method,which were selected based on our new mechanistic scale-up *** gauge transducer measurements at the wall and inside the bed at various local radial locations and at three axial heights were used to estimate *** was found that the experimental conditions with similar or close radial profiles of the Kolmogorov entropy and with similar or close radial profiles of the gas holdup achieve the similarity in local dimensionless hydrodynamic parameters,and vice versa.

Assistive technologies for pain management in people with amputation: a literature review

The prevalence of limb amputation is increasing globally as a devastating experience that can physically and psychologically affect the lifestyle of a person. The residual limb pain and phantom limb pain are common disabling sequelae after amputation surgery. Assistive devices/technologies can be used to relieve pain in people with amputation. The existing assistive devices/technologies for pain management in people with amputation include electrical nerve block devices/technologies, TENS units, elastomeric pumps and catheters, residual limb covers, laser systems, myoelectric prostheses and virtual reality systems, etc. There is a great potential to design, fabricate, and manufacture some portable, wireless, smart, and thin devices/technologies to stimulate the spinal cord or peripheral nerves by electrical, thermal, mechanical, and pharmaceutical stimulus. Although some preliminary efforts have been done, more attention must be paid by researchers, clinicians, designers, engineers, and manufacturers to the post amputation pain and its treatment methods.

Aerobic Training Impacts on Blood Cholesterol of Women with Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes mellitus has been identified as a major complication of pregnancies and has remained a major cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality, as well as maternal morbidity. Lipid abnormalities significantly contribute to the increased risk of cardiovascular disease and other morbidities in diabetics. One of the benefits of regular exercise is a reduction in cardiovascular risk factors through the improvement of the lipid profile and reduction of hypertension. This study investigated the effect of aerobic training on the cholesterol level of women with gestational diabetes. Thirty-four (34) women who met the inclusion criteria for this study were randomized into Exercise and Control groups. Exercise group participated in structured exercise programme, 3 sessions a week for 8 weeks with each session lasting a maximum of 60 minutes while the Control group did not participate in any form of structured exercise programme for the period of the study. Data were collected at baseline, at 4th week and at 8th week into the exercise programme. Thirty (30) of the participants completed the study and so only their data were analysed using Repeated Measure ANOVA and Independent t-test. The result showed significant changes in the total cholesterol (F[2, 28]) = 268.316, P = 0.001), of the Exercise group compared to the control. Independent t-test used to compare the lipid profile of the Experimental and Control groups showed significant difference between the means of the 2 groups at week 4 (total cholesterol (t(28) 2.164, P = 0.039, triglyceride [t(28) 3.146 P =

Objective: The goal of the removable partial denture is to restore impaired esthetics and masticatory function by replacing missing teeth. The aim of this study was to establish a possible correla-tion between removable partial denture in acrylic resin use after 5 years and dental diseases. Materials and Methods: Partially edentulous patients presenting for removable denture treatment at the Prosthodontics service of the Affiliated Hospital of Kinshasa University, Democratic Republic of Congo were assessed in this study. Patients were randomly assigned into 2 groups: Denture and non-denture group. Caries and periodontal diseases were compared between both groups. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: The average age in the denture and non-denture-group was 53.15 (±SD 22.05) and 31.59 (±SD 11.98) years. Out of 160 teeth were decayed, both 110 teeth (68.75%) in the denture-group and 50 teeth (31.25%) in the non-denture group. The DMFT index calculated at start time of the study was 0.2 for both groups, after five years was 7.1 for the denture-group and 2.6 for the non-denture-group. The plaque index in the denture-group had an index of 1 and that of non-denture-group was 0.5. Conclusion: The relationship has been found between patients’ wearers a RPD and dental diseases.
