An updated inventory of marine opisthobranch(Mollusca,Gastropoda)from the territorial waters of the Republic of Mauritius

Island ecosystems support diverse aquatic invertebrate communities comprising endemic *** of existing species is important for *** this study,a checklist of marine opisthobranch from the Republic of Mauritius is presented.A combination of benthic surveys(50 m×5 m in triplicates),rover diving techniques and photo documentation were used over two years(2018–2020)within 35 sheltered and unsheltered *** and molecular analysis were used for *** composition within sheltered and unsheltered areas in Mauritius was estimated using the Bray-Curtis *** checklist featured 117 species belonging to 61 genera and 28families,of which 13 are new *** findings increased the knowledge of opisthobranch diversity from the Mauritius by 15.4%.Among the listed species,the distribution range of Cyerce nigra,Actinocyclus papillatus,and Phyllidia picta extended from the Western Pacific to the South Western Indian *** analysis of the undescribed Gymnodoris *** it resembled Gymnodoris *** Hawaii and were different by a genetic distance value of 10.6%.The species richness and evenness were higher within the sheltered regions of Mauritius which harboured the food resource of *** areas as compared to unsheltered regions were heavily populated,suggesting the probable influence of wave actions on opisthobranch diversity and *** order Nudibranchia was reported as most speciose,with 86 *** Sacoglossa and Nudibranchia were observed only on macroalgae and sponges *** abundance was also recorded on shipwrecks which are the most common form of artificial *** the inclusion of observations from previous studies,201species belonging to 94 genera and 36 families are now known from the Mauritius.

Human impact on current environmental state in Chinese lakes

Anthropogenic and natural disturbance to inland aquatic ecosystems displays a notable spatial difference, yet data to measure these differences are scarce. This study encompasses 217 lakes distributed over five lake regions of China and elucidates the environmental factors determining the spatial variability of the water quality and trophic status. A significant correlation between human modification index in surrounding terrestrial systems(HMT)and trophic status of lake ecosystems(TSI) was found, and the regression slope in each region was similar except in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau region. It was further noted that the pattern of environmental factor network(EF network) differed among freshwater and saline lakes. The EF network was complex for freshwater lakes in less human-influenced areas, but intensive man-made influence disrupted most relationships except for those between total nitrogen, total phosphorus, chlorophyll-a, and water turbidity. As for regions including saline lakes, correlations among water salinity and organic forms of carbon and nitrogen were apparent. Our results suggest that HMT and EF network can be useful indicators of the ecological integrity of local lake ecosystems, and integrating spatial information on a large scale provides conservation planners the option for evaluating the potential risk on inland aquatic systems.

Effect of seasonal barrier layer on mixed-layer heat budget in the Bay of Bengal

Time series measurements (2010–2017) from the Research Moored Array for African–Asian–Australian Monsoon Analysis and Prediction (RAMA) moorings at 15°N,90°E and 12°N,90°E are used to investigate the effect of the seasonal barrier layer (BL) on the mixed-layer heat budget in the Bay of Bengal (BoB).The mixed-layer temperature tendency (?T/?t) is primarily controlled by the net surface heat flux that remains in the mixed layer(Q’) from March to October,while both Q’and the vertical heat flux at the base of the mixed layer (Q_(h)),estimated as the residual of the mixed-layer heat budget,dominate during winter (November–February).An inverse relation is observed between the BL thickness and the mixed-layer temperature (MLT).Based on the estimations at the moorings,it is suggested that when the BL thickness is≥25 m,it exerts a considerable influence on ?T/?t through the modulation of Q_(h) (warming) in the *** cooling associated with Q_(h) is strongest when the BL thickness is≤10 m with the MLT exceeding 29°C,while the contribution from Q_(h) remains nearly zero when the BL thickness varies between 10 m and 25 *** inversion is evident in the BoB during winter when the BL thickness remains≥25 m with an average MLT0.72 at the 95%significance level.

Seasonal export fluxes of size-fractionated particulate derived from polonium-210: A case study in Xiamen Bay

Size-fractionated 210Po and 210Pb, in the size fractions >0.4 μm, >2 μm and >10 μm, were examined to determine the seasonal variability of particulate fluxes in Xiamen Bay. Good correlations between 210Po and particulate organic carbon (POC) or non-Particulate Organic Matter (nPOM) suggested that 210Po can be used to trace the export fluxes of POC and nPOM. Both steady-state (SS) model and nSS model were used to evaluate fluxes of size-fractionated 210Po, results showed that nSS model was better than the SS model in coastal areas. Based on the nSS model, size-fractionated POC fluxes decreased with increasing particle size. For the particle size studied, maximum POC fluxes occurred in autumn, followed by spring, winter, and summer. Fluxes of nPOM were an order of magnitude higher than the corresponding size-fractionated POC fluxes. Differences between size-fractionated nPOM fluxes indicated that hydrodynamic conditions were the main factor regulating transportation of particulate out of the inner Bay. In winter most particulates, including >10 μm particles, were transported under the strongest hydrodynamic conditions. In contrast, only a fraction of the <2 μm particulates were transported from the inner Bay in spring. This study suggested that 210Po is a powerful tracer of seasonal particulate export in coastal seas.

Trends of carbon and nutrient accumulation through time in the Andong salt marsh,Hangzhou Bay,China

Salt marshes are important carbon and nutrient sinks that are threatened by climate changes and human *** this study,the accumulation rates of sedimentary total organic carbon(TOC),total nitrogen(TN),and total phosphorus(TP)from two cores in the Andong salt marsh,Hangzhou Bay,were investigated to determine whether TOC,TN,and TP show increasing or decreasing trends toward the *** TOC accumulation rates at the relatively lower marsh were lower during 1990-1996(1.63-2.37 g/(cm^(2)·a))than 1997-2014(1.15-4.30 g/(cm^(2)·a)).The TN accumulation rates increased from 1990(0.14 g/(cm^(2)·a))toward 2012(0.40 g/(cm^(2)·a)),then decreased toward 2014(0.16 g/(cm^(2)·a)).The TP accumulation rates were lower during 1990-1999(0.10-0.21 mg/(cm^(2)·a)),and decreased from 2000(0.32 mg/(cm^(2)·a))toward 2014(0.15 mg/(cm^(2)·a)).The TOC accumulation rates along the relatively upper marsh during 1982-1992(1.18-3.25 g/(cm^(2)·a))were lower than during 1998-2010(2.30-4.20 g/(cm^(2)·a)),and then decreased toward 2015(2.15 g/(cm^(2)·a)).TN increased from 1982(0.18 g/(cm^(2)·a))to 2005(0.41 g/(cm^(2)·a)),then decreased toward 2015(0.22 g/(cm^(2)·a)).TP accumulation rates fluctuated within a narrow range during 1982-1997(0.21-0.41 mg/(cm^(2)·a)),increased from 1998(0.50 mg/(cm^(2)·a))to 2004(0.87 mg/(cm^(2)·a)),then decreased to 2015(0.38 mg/(cm^(2)·a)).Thus,increases in accumulation rates of TOC,TN,and TP from the 1980s to 1990s indicates that the marsh likely served as carbon and nutrient sinks,then the rates decreased during 2000-2015 due probably to the reduced sediment inputs from rivers and intensified sea level rise.

Middle-late Holocene environment change induced by climate and human based on multi-proxy records from the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River,eastern China

Our knowledge about the interaction between human activities and the environment in the middle-late Holocene remains *** C1 in Lake Chaohu from the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River (MLYR),eastern China,provides an opportunity to investigate vegetation and climate changes,human activities,and East Asian summer monsoon(EASM) evolution since 5100 *** *** variables are assessed based on radiocarbon dating,pollen and charcoal records,and magnetic susceptibility (χ_(lf)),median grain size and *** reveal a hiatus in sedimentation between 2080 and 730 *** BP in the western part of Lake Chaohu,which is common in most lakes in the *** and deciduous broadleaved mixed forest retreated gradually after 3650 *** BP,and was replaced by secondary Pinus forest after at least 730 *** *** agricultural activities and vegetation clearance are first detected at 2520 *** *** settlements expanded from the lake front wetlands (during the period 2520–2080 *** BP) to remote high-altitude areas(2080–400 *** BP),and then returned to the lake front to reclaim the wetlands and lake (after 400 *** BP).A gradual trend of recessional EASM strength from 4300 *** BP and centennial-scale variations of EASM during the period5100–3650 *** BP are *** reduction of summer insolation,southward shift of the ITCZ,and El Ni?o Southern Oscillation may control the intensity of EASM and climate on a large regional scale.

A new species of Discostella guiyangensis ***.(Bacillariophyta,Stephanodiscales)from Guiyang,China:morphology and phylogeny

We describe a new species of Discostella from Guiyang based on light and scanning electron microscopic observations,as well as molecular *** species is morphologically distinguished from other species by a relatively smooth and slightly recessed central area with marginal striae of unequal lengths forked near the *** fultoportulae and a single rimoportula are situated between every two costae or on the *** morphological characters and the concatenated data of rbc L and SSU rDNA indicate that Discostella guiyangensis is a unique and new *** to divergence time estimation analysis,Discostella guiyangensis is the oldest species among the Discostella species sequenced *** addition,we complement molecular data of Discostella asterocostata and Discostella stelligera.

Proliferating cell nuclear antigen of Ulva prolifera is involved in the response to temperature stress

Ulva prolifera is the most common specie causative to green tide,and its growth is sensitive to temperature ***,the mechanisms of *** response to temperature stress remain *** this study,high temperature(36℃)stimulus promoted the death of unformed cell wall protoplasts and delayed the division of formed cell wall protoplasts,while low-temperature(4℃)stimulus did not,suggesting that the mechanisms of the response of *** to high and low temperature stresses are *** results show that proliferation-related genes were differentially expressed under high and low-temperature stresses,especially the proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA)and cyclins(CYCs).Subsequently,the interaction between PCNA and Cyclin A was confirmed by Co-immunoprecipitation,yeast two-hybrid,and so ***,high-and low temperature stresses induced the expression of PCNA and Cyclin A in varying of degrees,and activated extracellular signal-regulated kinase(ERK)signal *** results suggest,PCNA,Cyclin A,and ERK signal pathway played important roles in the resistance of *** to temperature ***,high-temperature stress induced an increase of miR-2916 in abundance,and exhibiting reverse expression of PCNA;and PCNA was target gene of miR-2916,suggesting that miR-2916 protected *** from high-temperature stress via post-transcriptionally regulation of *** study laid a foundation for understanding the function of PCNA and Cyclin A,moreover,it has a guiding significance to explore the mechanisms of the response to temperature stress from proliferation-related genes regulatory networks in ***.

Long-term nitrogen and phosphorus removal,shifts of functional bacteria and fate of resistance genes in bioretention systems under sulfamethoxazole stress

To understand the long-term performance of bioretention systems under sulfamethoxazole (SMX) stress, an unplanted bioretention system (BRS) and two modified BRSs with coconut-shell activated carbon (CAC) and CAC/zero-valent-iron (Fe^(0)) granules (CAC-BRS and Fe/CAC-BRS) were established. Both CAC-BRS and Fe/CAC-BRS significantly outperformed BRS in removing total nitrogen (TN)(CAC-BRS:82.48%;Fe/CAC-BRS:78.08%;BRS:47.51%), total phosphorous (TP)(CAC-BRS:79.36%;Fe/CAC-BRS:98.26%;BRS:41.99%),and SMX (CAC-BRS:99.74%, Fe/CAC-BRS:99.80%;BRS:23.05%) under the long-term SMX exposure (0.8 mg/L, 205 days). High-throughput sequencing revealed that the microbial community structures of the three BRSs shifted greatly in upper zones after SMX *** functional genera, dominantly Nitrospira, Rhodoplanes, Desulfomicrobium, Geobacter,were identified by combining the functional prediction by the FAPROTAX database with the dominant genera. The higher abundance of nitrogen functional genes (nirK, nirS and nos Z) in CAC-BRS and Fe/CAC-BRS might explain the more efficient TN removal in these two systems. Furthermore, the relative abundance of antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs)sul I and sulII increased in all BRSs along with SMX exposure, suggesting the selection of bacteria containing sul genes. Substrates tended to become reservoirs of sul genes. Also,co-occurrence network analysis revealed distinct potential host genera of ARGs between upper and lower zones. Notably, Fe/CAC-BRS succeeded to reduce the effluent sul genes by1-2 orders of magnitude, followed by CAC-BRS after 205-day exposure. This study demon-strated that substrate modification was crucial to maintain highly efficient nutrients and SMX removals, and ultimately extend the service life of BRSs in treating SMX wastewater.

STUDIES ON THE WINTERTIME CURRENT STRUCTURE AND T-S FINE STRUCTURE IN THE TAIWAN STRAIT

A cruise through the western sea area of the Taiwan Strait was carried out by the R/ V Dong Fang Hong in December, 1987. Eight anchored and 10 not anchored stations were set up. Over 25 time-series current observations were made at each station and CTD (Conductivity-temperature-depth) measurements were made at 5 anchored and 10 not anchored stations. Based on the measured data, fine-structures and step-like vertical structures of temperature and salinity were analysed, and a tentative wintertime current structure in the Taiwan Strait was described.
