Background:Reading enables us to obtain information,to engage in leisure,educational,business and other activities,and fosters cognitive *** vision loss can have a negative effect on an individual’s ability to read,and,by extension,reduce overall quality of *** addition,a growing body of research on the association between reading and cognition has linked a decrease in reading ability with negative changes in cognitive ***,the purpose of the current study is to test the feasibility of a research protocol that will be used to study the association between reduced reading ability and cognitive impairment,specifically in older adults with acquired vision ***:Seven participants(age range,27-60 years,Mage=44,4 males)completed a series of questionnaires and assessments that measured their cognitive,hearing,and reading *** participants had normal hearing,vision and cognition,with the exception of one(two pre-existing hearing conditions).Cognition was tested using the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test(RAVLT),the RAVLT 50-word Recognition test,the Verbal Fluency Test,an auditory Trail-Making task,and an auditory 1-N-back memory *** was used to assess ear health,and hearing was measured with self-administered computerized audiometry(Home Hearing Test)and a speech-in-noise test(Canadian Digit Triplet Test).Questionnaires included the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly,and a multiple-choice questionnaire on subjective reading ability and reading ***,reading acuity,speed and comprehension were assessed using the International Reading Speed Texts and the ***:In testing the feasibility of this protocol,the uninterrupted length of testing time,including obtaining consent,was determined to be between 60-90 *** of the assessments and tests(RAVLT,MNRead,audiogram)were reported to be mentally ***,all pilot participants were able to complete all *** the exception of s

Aim: To investigate the association between different types of headache and leisure activities in 13-y-old schoolchildren. Methods: A population-based, cross-sectional study was performed through face-to-face interviews with age-matched cohorts with headache and asymptomatic controls. The present study comprised 59 children with migraine, 65 with episodic tension-type headache (TTHA) and 59 headache-free controls. In the interview, besides questions concerning headache, the children were asked open and structured questions about the type and amount of their leisure activities. Results: Children with migraine spent more time in sports activities than children with episodic tension-type headache or children without headache (test for trend, p leisure activity was not significantly associated with headache type (p > 0.05). Children with both migraine and episodic tension-type headache used computers more often than children without headache (test for trend, p < 0.05; migraine: OR 1.2, 95% CI 1.1-1.5; tension-type headache: OR 1.3, 95% CI 1.1-1.5). Conclusion: This study provides additional data on the activity status and headache complaints in adolescents. The results indicate that frequent computer use is associated with both tension-type headache and migraine, and intensive overall sports activities are characteristic of adolescents with migraine.

The authors followed 5,437 people aged 55 years and older with normal baseline Mini-Mental State Examination score annually for 5 years. The mean incidence of cognitive impairment was 2.3%per year. Cognitive activities in both the individual item (playing board games and reading) and the composite measure were associated with the reduced risk of cognitive impairment, while watching television was associated with an increased risk of cognitive impairment.

PURPOSE: Functional outcomes in laparoscopic-assisted ileal pouch-anal anastomosis have been incompletely studied. More than one-year follow-up has rarely been reported in these patients. This study was designed to assess operative, functional, and quality of life outcomes in patients with ulcerative colitis or familial adenomatous polyposis a minimum of one year after. METHODS: Thirty-three laparoscopic-assisted ileal pouch-anal anastomosis and 33 open ileal pouch-anal anastomosis patients, with a median of 13 months and minimum of 12 months follow-up, were identified from a prospective, laparoscopic database. Functional outcome was prospectively assessed by using a standardized survey. These cohorts were matched by individual patient for year of surgery, age, gender, body mass index, and indication. RESULTS: Median age was 27 years (open) and 28 years (laparoscopic). There were 27 females and 6 males in each group. All operations occurred between 1999 and 2001. Median body mass index was 22.3 (open) and 21.7 (laparoscopic) groups. There were no significant differences in diagnosis, use of diversion, and anastomotic technique. Postoperative morbidity occurred in 6 percent of the laparoscopic cases and 12 percent of the open cases. Functional outcome after a minimum of one year revealed equivalent median day and median nocturnal number of stools of six to seven and one to two respectively. Consistency of stool, medication usage, and continence were no different between groups. Daytime and nocturnal incontinence was similar. Quality of life in regard to social, home life, family, travel, sports, recreation, and sex life were equivalent. CONCLUSIONS: The function and quality of life outcomes for patients undergoing laparoscopic-assisted ileal pouch-anal anastomosis seem to be equivalent to our open experience. Laparoscopic-assisted ileal pouch-anal anastomosis offers selected patients a safe, feasible, and durable alternative.
