Ecological environment of rural areas in Taiwan had been seriously threatened by the increasing urban ***,the related regulations and policies as guidelines for protecting ecological environment of rural areas in Taiwan had not been completely ***,it is urgent to propose strategies for maintaining rural areas' natural environment and ecology to avoid the continuous environmental *** study is based upon the theory of landscape *** using structure,function,and change as major principles,current issues of landscape ecology in rural areas of Taiwan were *** propose the appropriate strategies for protecting, maintaining,and rebuilding rural areas' landscape and ecology,data collection and integration of literature review,related regulations,and policies were used in this *** reviewing and analyzing the related information,the study proposed strategies for different space scales,including development strategies(avoiding and compensating) for bigger space scale(e.g.,proposing the best route by using the map of landscape unit analysis)and development strategies(shrinking and augmenting)for smaller space scale(e.g.,introducing ecological engineering method into the constructions of riverbank,roadside,pond, etc.).Rural landscape planning should select natural preservation areas as core areas,rural areas as buffer zones,corridors,and development *** study had integrated the planning concept of landscape ecology and useful strategies for illustrated areas(Shi-Tan).The comprehensive ecological networks for Shi-Tan were also proposed. The study suggested that related agencies make efforts on establishing fallows,wetlands,and subsidizing corridor development to become ecological ***,the utmost task is to build up data base of local ecological resources for facilitating the further tracing and residents' training to help environmental monitoring and achieve sustainable development purpose for rural areas

Selection of promising chestnuts(Castanea sativa) among wild growing trees from southern Mediterranean region forests of Turkey

Turkey ranked third place in the world for chestnut production after China and South Korea and the country has unique chestnut forests including valuable and diverse chestnut genotypes. This study was conducted to select superior chestnut genotypes within seedling popu- lations found in natural wild grown chestnut forest located in Isparta province in Turkey during 2010-2011 years. A total of 2500 wild grown chestnut trees were examined on the field first year and among them the most promising 22 genotypes were chosen according to relatively high yield capacity, earliness, tolerance to chestnut blight （Cryphonectria parasitica）, ink disease （Phytopthora cambivora）, and fruit quality characteristics. The selected 22 genotypes were evaluated for their detailed morpho- logical, phenological and pomological traits in 2010 and 2011. According to average of 2 years, nut weight, the number of nut per kilogram, nut width, nut length, nut height and nut shell thickness of 22 promising genotypes ranged from 10.26 to 22.32 g, 97.47 to 44.80/kg, 26.80 to 42.47, 16.92 to 25.91, 27.74 to 39.73, and 0.26 to 1.01 mm, respectively. The ash, crude protein, and total fat content of kernels were between 0.85 to 1.94, 3.69 to 7.06 and 1.32 to 4.52, respectively. The genotypes were evaluated with weighted ranking method and the highest general quality score was observed in genotypes of IY17, IYO1, IY42, IY43 and IY12.

Seed germination and dormancy: The classic story, new puzzles, and evolution

This review highlights recent progresses in seed germination and dormancy *** on the weakening of the endosperm during germination,which is almost a classic theme in seed biology,was resumed byα-xylosidase *** genetic evidence was presented to suggest that the quality control of xyloglucan biosynthesis in the endosperm(and the embryo)plays a critical role in *** analyses on the endosperm and the adjace nt layers have suggested that the cutin coat in the endosperm-testa interphase negatively affects germination while the en dosperm-embryo in terphase produces a sheath that facilitates *** progresses significantly advanced our understanding of seed germination mechanisms.A breakthrough in dormancy research,on the other hand,revealed the unique abscisic acid signaling pathway that is regulated by DELAY OF GERMINATION1(DOG1).The detailed analysis of DOC1 expression uncovered the intriguing story of reciprocal regulation of the sensean tisense pair,which gen erated new *** studies also suggested that the DOG1 function is not limited to dormancy but extended through general seed maturation,which provokes questions about the evolution of DOG1 family *** biology is becoming more exciting with the classic stories being revitalized and new puzzles emerging from the frontier.

Molecular Cloning and Expression Analysis of the ζ-Carotene Desaturase Gene in Chinese kale(Brassica oleracea *** Bailey)

ζ-Carotene desaturase(ZDS)is an important enzyme in carotenoid ***,the Brassica oleracea *** ZDS(Boa ZDS)gene was cloned from Chinese kale via reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR)and deposited in Gen Bank(accession number KY662297).The Boa ZDS gene contains an open reading frame of 1 686 bp that encodes a 561-amino acid *** analysis indicates that the ZDS protein is apparently conserved during plant evolution and is most closely related to *** *** and *** promoter sequence of the Boa ZDS gene was predicted to harbor several cis-acting elements that are related to light and phytohormone *** RT-PCR analysis showed that Boa ZDS expression varied among different developmental stages and *** ZDS expression remained stable during germination and seedling stages and rapidly increased at the mature leaf *** leaves showed the highest ZDS expression levels compared to the other *** expression decreased in all flower tissues during *** fused protein of Boa ZDS was obtained by prokaryotic *** expression of Boa ZDS in Escherichia coli confirmed that Boa ZDS encodes a functionalζ-carotene desaturase that increases β-carotene accumulation in *** cells harboring a β-carotene-producing *** findings of the present study provide a molecular basis for the elucidation of ZDS gene function in Chinese kale.

Iranian Grapevine Rootstocks and Hormonal Effects on Graft Union, Growth and Antioxidant Responses of Asgari Seedless Grape

This research investigated physiological and biochemical changes at rootstock–scion union of graft combinations between Iranian rootstocks and Asgari scion in response to NAA and BAP *** cuts of scion and rootstock were dipped into NAA(0,200 and 400 mg·L^(-1))and BAP(0,250 and 500 mg·L^(-1))solutions for 30 min,immediately after the cuttings were grafted using the wedge grafting *** highest successful grafting rate(82%)was recorded with Asgari–Asgari combination treated with 200 mg·L^(-1) NAA+500 mg·L^(-1) *** the graft cut–surfaces with 200 mg·L^(-1) NAA+500 mg·L^(-1) BAP caused the lowest H 2 O 2 and MDA *** all the graft combinations,the highest increase in chlorophyll content with a high photosynthesis efficiency occurred in Asgari–Shahani when treated with 200 mg·L^(-1)NAA+500 mg·L^(-1) *** graft union formation in the presence of 200 mg·L^(-1) NAA+500 mg·L^(-1) BAP application enhanced CAT and POX *** conclusion,treatment of graft zone with 200 mg·L^(-1) NAA+500 mg·L^(-1) BAP enhanced antioxidant activities and reduced lipid peroxidation in scion ***,several grapevine rootstocks tested in our research were also impacting the scion performance.

Co-Treatment of EFF and 1-MCP for Enhancing the Shelf-Life and Aroma Volatile Compounds of Oriental Sweet Melons(Cucumis melo *** Makino)

Compared to other melon types, oriental sweet melon （Cucumis melo var. makuwa Makino） is quite a different species with a shorter shelf-life due to its typical climacteric behavior and thin pericarp. The purpose of this experiment is to explore the effects of co- treatment of enhanced freshness formulation （EFF） and 1-methylcyclopropene （1-MCP） on physiological changes and the content of aroma volatile compounds introduced by them of two oriental sweet melon cultivars （Yumeiren and Tianbao） during storage. The melons were stored in incubators with temperature of 15~C and a relative humidity of 85% for 24 d during which fruit quality and related physiological index were measured. Compared to the control, both treatments delayed fruit weight loss rate and kept the fruit firmness, water content and soluble solids content. Ascorbate peroxidase （APX） and phenylalanine ammonia lyase （PAL） activities showed fluctuations in treated melons, while lipoxygenase （LOX） activity （P〈0.01） and malondialdehyde （MDA） content （P〈0.05） decreased compared to control. During the early stage of storage, alcohols and aldehydes were the main volatile compounds, and esters gradually increased during storage. Of all the esters, acetic esters were the main components, followed by oxalic acid esters and other esters. The total content of aroma volatile compounds, esters, alcohols and aldehydes of co-treated melons were all higher than those of 1-MCP treated and control melons. In addition, the aroma volatile peak of co-treated melons occurred later than that of 1-MCP treated and control melons. In summary, co-treatment of EFF and 1-MCP was more beneficial than 1-MCP treatment to delay ripening and senescence, maintain fruit quality, enhance shelf-life and improve levels of aroma volatile compounds.

Comparative Transcriptome Analysis of Actinidia arguta Fruits Reveals the Involvement of Various Transcription Factors in Ripening

The fruit of Actinidia arguta is typically *** ripening,the fruits produce a large amount of *** the molecular basis of climacteric fruit ripening has been extensively studied,some aspects such as its transcriptional regulation remain ***,we compared the transcriptomes of *** fruits collected at commercial harvest(sample d0)and at 6 days after harvest(sample d6)using RNA-seq.A total of 3 659 differentially expressed genes(DEGs)between samples d0 and d6 were detected,of which 2 983 and 1 104 could be functionally annotated with Gene Ontology(GO)and Clusters of Orthologous Groups(COG)*** involved in ethylene biosynthesis and signal transduction were identified,including ACO(c79627),ERF061(c105131),and ERF6(c99193).Transcription factors such as ERF,b HLH,NAC,MADS,and MYB were also differentially expressed between samples d0 and *** DEGs were subjected to further analysis using quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(q RT-PCR),and the results coincided with those of *** data revealed additional transcription factors that are involved in the regulation of fruit *** results provide useful information for future research on the transcriptional regulation of fruit ripening.

Landscape structure and bird's diversity in the rural areas of Taiwan

This study tries to discuss the relationship between landscape structure and organisms in the perspective of landscape architecture. The research hypotheses were then proposed as (1) there are relationships between landscape structure indexes and birds' diversity in the rural areas of Taiwan; (2) the relationships between landscape structure and birds' diversity will be different in different hierarchical levels. In order to increase the bird species, landscape planners could tries to increase the density of water bodies, but decrease the farms and human planted woods. Decrease the density of constructed and human planted grasslands. Increase the area of un-worked acres, natural grasslands, and the area of water bodies and circular the water bodies and natural forest. In order to increase birds' diversity, landscape planners could decrease the concentration of paved areas. Concentrate the human planted trees to increase the core areas of woodlands. Increase the area of natural grassland circular. In order to increase the total number of birds in the planning areas, landscape planners could scattered the paved areas and lengthen the constructed areas. Decreases the core region of the constructed areas. Increase the area of un-worked acres and water bodies. Decrease the disturbance of both the interior area of natural and human planted woodlands and try to increase the density of water bodies.;The analysis results showed that the small grain size indexes are more suitable for the rural areas of Taiwan to capture the influential factors of bird communities. The high fragmentation of land usages in Taiwan lessens the influences of the regional landscape pattern.

Genetic analysis of selected almond genotypes and cultivars grown in Turkey using peroxidase-gene-based markers

Peroxidase plays important roles in many stress-related interactions and catalyzes important reactions in various physiological processes. Since peroxidase played critical roles in the evolution of almond（Prunus dulcis Miller（D.A Webb） syn P. amygdalus Batsch）, peroxidase-gene-based analyses may increase the understanding of evolution of this species. Peroxidase gene polymorphism（POGP） markers were used to determine genetic diversity and relationships among 69 Turkish genotypes/cultivars and 27 foreign almond cultivars by using unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean（UPGMA） analysis. This study is the first evaluation of the use of POGP markers for diversity analysis in ***, 83 fragments were obtained from eight peroxidase primer pairs, and polymorphism was identified as 94 %.Similarity level among the genotypes ranged between 0.63 and 0.93, and all materials were distinguished. In general,Turkish and foreign genotypes were mixed in clusters since they share a common genetic background and gene migration among the sites. Clusters were not based on geographic regions except for some minor groupings. This study indicated that peroxidase gene markers can be reliably used to determine genetic relationships in almonds.

Analysis of solar radiation changes in Chinese solar greenhouses with different roof structures based on a solar radiation model

Chinese solar greenhouses(CSGs)are important agricultural production *** non-artificial heating conditions,solar radiation is the only CSGs energy *** is highly important to optimally obtain solar energy in greenhouse construction and *** this study,a solar radiation model for solar greenhouses was adopted to explore the quantities of solar radiation in greenhouses considering different front roof forms and ***,the solar radiation amounts corresponding to five roof forms,namely,double-section arc,parabolic,oval,arc,and linear roofs,are compared and analyzed during the four solar periods(beginning of spring,vernal equinox,beginning of winter,and winter solstice).It was found that the solar radiation of oval roof greenhouses on the ground was the largest and was 4.44%-23.68%higher than that of parabolic *** addition,the cumulative sum of light on the linear roof greenhouse wall is also the largest and was 6.02%to 12.08%higher than the parabolic roof greenhouse in the four solar ***,the solar radiation in CSGs was compared with front roof angles of 25°,30°,and 35°.It was observed that the solar radiation amount gradually increases with increasing ***,the variation at an angle of 35°influences the solar radiation of the paraboloidal CSGs ground and elliptical CSGs north wall to the greatest extent,which increased by 8.23%and 12.74%,*** study confirms the role of front roof form and inclination angle in enhancing the greenhouse solar radiation level.
