Influences of various grazing systems on community biomass of a desert grassland in Inner Mongolia,China

This study investigated the effects of various grazing systems, including continuous grazing, rotational grazing, and no-grazing systems, on the community biomass in the Stipa breviflora Griseb desert grassland during the grazing seasons in 2005, 2006, and 2007, based on study sites established in 1999. We found that the seasonal dynamics of the aboveground biomass were quite similar among the three treatments, which reached peak values in period from August to September during each study year. The continuous grazing system reduced the aboveground biomass from 2005 to 2007 under drought conditions, and the rotational grazing and no-grazing systems maintained more aboveground biomass than the continuous grazing system did. The belowground biomass declined with the increase of soil depth among the three treatments, and in the surface 20-cm soil layer it accounted for more than 60% of the total biomass. The belowground biomass was found to be highly correlated with soil depth under rotational grazing. The total belowground biomass within the 0--100-cm soil layer for rotational grazing was sig- nificantly higher than for continuous grazing and no-grazing, and had 15,775 kg/ha more biomass. Our results demonstrate that conservative rotational grazing can alleviate grassland deterioration by reserving more aboveground and belowground biomass than the continuous grazing system does.

Background:Changes in foliar nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P)stoichiometry play important roles in predicting the efects of global change on ecosystem structure and ***,there is substantial debate on the efects of P addition on foliar N and P stoichiometry,particularly under diferent levels of N ***,we conducted a global meta-analysis to investigate how N addition alters the efects of P addition on foliar N and P stoichiometry across different rates and durations of P addition and plant growth types based on more than 1150 ***:We found that P addition without N addition increased foliar N concentrations,whereas P addition with N addition had no *** positive efects of P addition on foliar P concentrations were greater without N addition than with N ***,the efects of P addition on foliar N,P and N:P ratios varied with the rate and duration of P *** particular,short-term or low-dose P addition with and without N addition increased foliar N concentration,and the positive efects of short-term or low-dose P addition on foliar P concentrations were greater without N addition than with N *** responses of foliar N and P stoichiometry of evergreen plants to P addition were greater without N addition than with N ***,regardless of N addition,soil P availability was more efective than P resorption efciency in predicting the changes in foliar N and P stoichiometry in response to P ***:Our results highlight that increasing N deposition might alter the response of foliar N and P stoichiometry to P addition and demonstrate the important efect of the experimental environment on the *** results advance our understanding of the response of plant nutrient use efciency to P addition with increasing N deposition.

Aims Invasive species alter the composition and function of communities,threatening the conservation of important ecosystems *** savanna ecosystems,fire plays a key role by modifying biogeochemical cycles and shaping the composition and structure of vegetation *** many studies have examined the long-term effects of fire frequency on grassland communities,few studies have examined the relationship between fire regime and woody species *** The Serengeti ecosystem is an ecologically and economically valuable natural resource in East Africa whose conservation is currently threatened by a variety of factors,including invasive *** determined the abundance of Maerua subcordata,a noxious woody shrub,in three different regions of the Serengeti National Park,*** then examined the influence of fire frequency,developed through the use of 7 years of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS)imagery,on *** *** Findings In all regions,burned transects had significantly greater abundances of *** compared to unburned ***,the number of times each transect burned from 2000 to 2006 had a significant positive effect on the abundance of *** and the number of years since a transect last burned had a significant negative relationship with *** results are particularly important as this species provides little forage value and is potentially toxic to wildlife and *** studies are needed to determine the ecological consequences of increasing *** abundance,as the potential expansion of noxious shrubs into protected areas of important conservation status is of serious concern.

Convergence of community composition during secondary succession on Zokor rodent mounds on the Tibetan Plateau

Aims The community succession theory is much debated in *** studied succession on Zokor rodent mounds on the Tibetan Plateau to address several fundamental questions,among them:(i)During secondary succession,does the community composition converge towards one community state or multiple states depending on the initial colonization?(ii)Do mound communities located in different background communities exhibit different assembly trajectories?Methods In a sub-alpine meadow,we investigated a total of 80 mound com-munities at several successional stages in three different background communities resulting from different management histories and compared their changes in species *** distribution of plant communities over time was analyzed with quantitative clas-sification and ordination *** co-occurrence patterns of species were evaluated at each successional stage,and the degree of convergence/divergence among communities was obtained by calculating two beta-diversity *** Findings During secondary succession,species richness of mound com-munities changed over time,and this change was dependent on the background *** life-form groups exhibited different dynamic patterns in species richness and plant *** composition and the degree of species co-occur-rence between communities increased over time since *** was much variation in species composition at earlier stages of succession,but communities on older mounds became more similar to each other and to their surrounding vegetation over the course of secondary ***-disturbance suc-cession of Zokor mound communities transitioned from‘multiple alternative states’to‘background-based deterministic commu-nity assembly’over *** between competition and colonization,as well as the characteristics of different life-forms and mass effects within a limited species pool are the mecha-nisms responsible for convergence of mound communities.

Modifying regeneration strategies classification to enhance the understanding of dominant species growth in fire-prone forest in Southwest China

Background:In fire-prone ecosystems,plant species having different post-fire regeneration strategies(PFRS)coexist at the local scale while showing different growth *** evaluate the effect of PFRS on species regeneration,we investigated the plant communities burned in different years in the central Yunnan Province,Southwest *** indicators describing plant growth and population importance were measured to compare the regeneration of four dominant tree species,including one facultative seeders(FS)and three obligate resprouters(OR).Partial correlation and mixed linear effect modeling were applied to disentangle the contribution of intrinsic and environmental factors to the interspecific variation in post-fire ***:We identified two subtypes of plant growth strategy in the early post-fire stage for OR species;i.e.,number growth(ORþN)priority and height growth(ORþH)priority for sprouting ***,the FS and OR species varied in height growth rate with different temporal *** ORþN species occupied post-fire space horizontally with more resprouts and larger coverage than ORþH and FS species at the earlier *** contrast,the ORþH species generally had far less resprouts per clump,more variations in stem height and basal *** analysis showed that the variation of post-fire plant regeneration was not effectively explained by environmental factors(R2<20%);however,the linear mixed models with the modified PFRS as a random effect substantially increased the ***:The differentiated regeneration dynamics and growth priorities in the four dominant tree species indicated a critical dichotomy of habitat occupation strategy for the resprouter species during the early stage of post-fire forest *** study uncovered a trade-off between height versus number growth priority in the post-fire tree growth strategy and provides a novel perspective in understanding the living space occupying(niche partit

Local perceptions of grassland change and priorities for conservation of natural resources of Banni, Gujarat, India

This study was conducted in the Banni region of the Gujarat State,India,which is located in the western-most end of the *** main objective was to investigate the local perceptions of grassland change,regeneration potentiality,socio-economic status and fac-tors that cause degradation of the vegetation resources in *** Rural Appraisal(PRA)was employed to generate the socio-economic profile of interviewed villages or *** on vegetation deteriora-tion and changes in species composition significant for sustainable management of grassland was obtained through interviews with 51 elderly maldharies(pastoral-ists)and local inhabitants living in 31 villages in *** people had observed a change in the local surrounding habitats from grassland to woodland(domi-nated by Prosopis juliflora,locally called Gando Bavar)during their lifetime and considered it primarily a result of frequent intensive drought,constructed dams on flooding rivers in Banni,and declining *** socio-economic survey showed that the Banni communities are highly dependent on the natural grassland for various *** particular,nine woody species were useful for construction of the traditional house called Bhunga,four for medicine and 22 for livestock *** preferred and declining species were characteristically large wild thorny trees with edible fruits,*** nilotica ***(Bavar),Prosopis cineraria(Kandho),and Salvadora persica(Kharijar).Some of the locally highly preferred grass species were also considered to be declining in the local environs;they included Dichanthium annulatum(Jinjvo),Cenchrus ciliaris(Dhaman),Sporobolus fertilis(Khevai)and Chloris barbata(Siyarpuchha).The study furthermore identified a close coincidence between the interest in conserving tree species diversity nearby the natural water resources and priorities of local inhabitants,which included protection of plenty of large trees(including many fruit tress,viz.

Effects of nitrogen addition and mowing on nitrogen-and water-use efficiency oi Artemisia frigida in a grassland restored from an abandoned cropland

Aims Competition among plants in a community usually depends on their nitrogen(N)-use efficiency(NUE)and water-use efficiency(WUE)in arid and semi-arid *** frigida is an indicator species in heavily degraded grassland,however,how its NUE and WUE respond to N addition in different successional stages is still unclear,especially with mowing,a common management practice in semi-arid *** Based on a long-term controlled experiment with N addition and mowing in an abandoned cropland from 2006 to 2013,we investigated the NUE and WUE oi *** in two patches(*** and herb patches)in 2013 which represented two potential successional stages from herb to grass *** coverage of *** was higher(about 50%)in the herb patch than in the grass patch(about 10%).Stable isotopic C(δ^(13)C)and N(δ^(15)N)as well as C and N pools were measured in plants and *** was calculated as leaf C/N,and leafδ^(13)C values were used as a proxy for *** Findings N addition did not affect WUE of ***,but significantly decreased NUE by 42.9%and 26.6%in grass and herb patches,*** response of NUE to N addition was related to altering utilization of different N sources(NH_(4)^(+)***_(3)^(-))by *** according to the changed relationship between leafδ^(15)N/soil 615N and *** had no effect on NUE regardless of N addition,but significantly increased WUE by 2.3%for *** without N addition in the grass *** addition of N reduced the positive effect of mowing on its WUE in grass *** results suggested that decreased NUE and/or WUE of *** under mowing and N addition could reduce its competition,and further accelerate restoration succession from the abandoned cropland to natural grassland in the semi-arid region.
