It is estimated that chronic kidney disease(CKD)will be the fifth leading cause of death in the world by 2040[1].Early recognition and intervention for kidney damage are essential.Estimated glomerular filtration rate(eGFR)can be calculated by measuring blood creatinine to evaluate glomerular function,and urinary N-acetyl-β-δ-glucosaminidase(UNAG)level is generally recognized as a marker of renal tubular injury.Exposure to lead(Pb)and cadmium(Cd)can damage renal function,leading to a decrease in eGFR and an increase in UNAG[2].Both Pb and Cd are easily accumulated in the body and then slowly released by the kidneys and excreted.So,urinary Pb(UPb)and Cd(UCd)levels can be used as biomarkers of exposure[3,4].

Purpose:Meniere's disease(MD),first introduced by Prosper Meniere,is characterized mainly by vertigo,tinnitus,aural fullness and sensorineural hearing loss.Though the exact pathophysiology of MD is unknown,immunologic and inflammatory interactions are possible underlying mechanisms involved in MD.This study is aimed to investigate the immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effect of Nigella sativa on MD as a therapeutic agent.Methods:We divided 40 patients with definite MD into two groups of 20 cases.The study group received 1 g of Nigella sativa oil daily for three months and the control group received a placebo.Changes in hearing,tinnitus and vertigo were estimated by pure tone audiometry,tinnitus handicap inventory questionnaire and dizziness handicap inventory questionnaire,respectively.Results:At the end of the study we did not observe any significant improvement in study's group hearing threshold,tinnitus and vertigo compared to the control group.Conclusions:In this study,statistical analysis showed that Nigella sativa failed to improve signs and symptoms of MD.However,further investigations with a larger study population are needed to ascertain the current conclusion.

Ocimum sanctum extract preserves neuronal echotexture and controls seizure in lithium-pilocarpine induced status epilepticus rats

Objective:To investigate the effect of Ocimum sanctum hydroalcoholic extract(OSHE)on seizure control and neuronal injury in rats with lithium-pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus(SE).Methods:SE was induced by administering lithium chloride followed by pilocarpine 24 h later.OSHE was administered either alone or in combination with valproate(VPA)3 days before SE induction until 14 days post-SE induction.Seizure parameters were recorded on day 1(0-3 h),day 1-3 and day 4-14 post-SE.On day 14 post-SE,neurobehavioural tests(elevated plus maze and passive avoidance)were done followed by total antioxidant capacity,neuron-specific enolase,immunohistochemistry,and electron microscopic assessment in the hippocampus and cortex tissue.Results:OSHE+VPA provided more significant seizure protection(75%)than VPA(62.5%),OSHE(62.5%),or SE control(12.5%)(overall P=0.003).The latency to stage-3/4 seizures was increased and the number of stage-3/4 seizures was reduced in all treatment groups compared to the SE control group(P=0.002 and<0.001,respectively).The OSHE+VPA group also had better memory retention than other treatment groups(P<0.001)in the passive avoidance test.Total antioxidant capacity level was significantly higher and neuron-specific enolase was lower in the OSHE and OSHE+VPA groups compared to the SE control group.Electron microscopic study showed significant myelin sheath damage(67.5%,P<0.05)and axonal degeneration(51.8%,P<0.001)in the hippocampus of the SE control group,which were alleviated by OSHE or OSHE+VPA treatment.In immunohistochemical analysis,the OSHE,OSHE+VPA,and VPA groups had a significantly higher number of viable neurons and less neuronal loss compared to the SE control in the hippocampus(P<0.001).Conclusions:OSHE either alone or in combination with VPA shows better seizure control by preservation of neuronal echotexture and reducing oxidative stress in the hippocampus.

In recent years,mesenchymal stem cells(MSC)have been considered the most effective source for regenerative medicine,especially due to released soluble paracrine bioactive components and extracellular vesicles.These factors,collectively called the secretome,play crucial roles in immunomodulation and in improving survival and regeneration capabilities of injured tissue.Recently,there has been a growing interest in the secretome released by retinal cytotypes,especially retinal pigment epithelium and Müller glia cells.The latter trophic factors represent the key to preserving morphofunctional integrity of the retina,regulating biological pathways involved in survival,function and responding to injury.Furthermore,these factors can play a pivotal role in onset and progression of retinal diseases after damage of cell secretory function.In this review,we delineated the importance of cross-talk between MSCs and retinal cells,focusing on common/induced secreted factors,during experimental therapy for retinal diseases.The cross-link between the MSC and retinal cell secretomes suggests that the MSC secretome can modulate the retinal cell secretome and vice versa.For example,the MSC secretome can protect retinal cells from degeneration by reducing oxidative stress,autophagy and programmed cell death.Conversely,the retinal cell secretome can influence the MSC secretome by inducing changes in MSC gene expression and phenotype.

Radiometric age dating of detrital zircons is highly advantageous for analysis of the depositional environment and to identify source areas. Aiming at the uplift and denudation of the surrounding ranges, LA ICP-MS U-Pb analysis has been performed on zircon grains from a conglomerate collected at the Lower Pliocene of Mazartagh, which is in the center of the Tarim basin, Xinjiang （新疆）, China. A wide range of ages mainly falling into three groups was yielded： 200-500, 800-1 100, and 1 800-2 000 Ma. Zircon features principally indicate magmatic origin. According to the comparison between the analyzed zircons with those from surrounding orogenic belts, the younger grains are mainly related to the west while the older ones are to the regions more eastward. The variations might imply the W-E propagation tectonic activation and uplift of the surrounding orogenic belts. The west segment uplifted and was denuded firstly, driven by the approximate W-E height difference, upon the denudation, transportation and deposition, acting as the source of young zircons analyzed. With the eastward spreading of tectonic movement, the segment more to the east rose, the meridional relief increased rapidly and began to control the flow direction, then more zircons joined in the Pliocene in Mazartagh. It is difficult to definitely explain the source of grains with similar values to that from the Altyn Mountain region, more detailed data and chronological ages with higher precision will be helpful for making more credible conclusion.

Iron and manganese oxides are common components of soils. They frequently occur in nodules constituting important soil sorbents and play a crucial role in a number of chemical reactions in the soil environment. In addition, the oxides are very sensitive to environmental changes (moisture, pH, Eh) constituting important indicators of soil-forming processes and water movement in the landscape. The objectives of the study were: i) to examine the distribution and size of Fe-Mn nodules in Albeluvisols containing a fragipan horizon; ii) to determine the morphology and chemical composition of the nodules, and iii) to estimate the effect of the fragipan horizon on water movement within the soil profile. An investigation was carried out on five soil profiles containing a fragipan horizon and classified as Fragic Albeluvisols within the Carpathian Foothills in Poland. In the Albeluvisols studied, the maximum concentration of Fe-Mn nodules occurred in the horizon lying directly on the fragipan horizon. This suggests that the pan acts as a natural barrier restricting water infiltration and leads to the seasonal development of a perched water table promoting redox processes. The most common are coarse (1-0.5 mm) and medium (0.5-0.25 mm) irregular Fe-Mn nodules showing a gradual boundary and undifferentiated internal fabric. Eluvial horizons contained also larger amounts of round and dense nodules with a sharp boundary, suggesting frequent oxidation and reduction. The fragipan horizon contained mainly irregular and soft nodules, suggesting longer saturation with water during the year. Concentrations of trace elements (Cu, Zn) and P were higher within Fe-Mn nodules than in the surrounding soil materials, showing that iron and manganese oxides adsorbed and immobilised these elements.

A New Troodontid Dinosaur from the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Formation of Liaoning Province,China

A new troodontid dinosaur, Daliansaurus liaoningensis gen. et sp. nov., is erected based on a nearly complete specimen from the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Formation of Beipiao City, Liaoning Province, China. This well preserved skeleton provides important new details of the anatomy for Liaoning troodontids, and gives new insight into their phylogenetic relationships and evolution. Daliansaurus is distinguished from other troodontids by an enlarged ungual on pedal digit IV, which is approximately the same size as the sickle-shaped second ungual, and is differentiated from other Liaoning troodontids by a number of characters of the skull, manus, pelvis, and hindlimb. A phylogenetic analysis recovers Daliansaurus within a subclade of Liaoning troodontids that also includes Sinovenator, Sinusonasus, and MeL We erect a name for this group--Sinovenatorinae--and argue that it reflects a localized radiation of small-bodied troodontids in the Early Cretaceous of eastern Asia, similar to previously recognized radiations of Liaoning dromaeosaurids and avialans. As more Liaoning theropods are discovered, it is becoming apparent that small, feathered paravians were particularly diverse during the Early Cretaceous, and future work is needed to clarify how this diversity arose, which species coexisted, and how these numerous species partitioned niches.

Prolonged existence of SARS-CoV-2 RNAs in the extracellular vesicles of respiratory specimens from patients with negative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction

Background and aim:Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)is primarily in the respiratory tract,particularly in patients with underlying comorbidities.This study aimed to investigate the presence of the virus inside the extracellular vesicles(EVs)in patients with and without chronic liver disease(CLD).Methods:Eighty patients with positive SARS-CoV-2,including twenty-four patients with CLD and fiftysix patients without CLD,and five healthy controls with negative SARS-CoV-2 were enrolled.Nasal swab specimens were tested for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR).Patients with coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)were followed up on days 7 and 14.Nasal swab,collected in viral transport media(VTM),and plasma samples were investigated at each time point.EVs were isolated from the nasal swabs(collected in VTM)and plasma using differential ultracentrifugation and estimated at each time point.The transmission or replication by the EVs was assessed in Vero E6 cells.Results:In patients with baseline RT-PCR positive,SARS-CoV-2 RNAs inside the EVs were found in 68/80(85%)patients with higher viral load in the nasal swabs than in the EVs(cycle threshold(Ct)value,23.4±5.7 vs.30.3±5.0,P<0.001).On follow-up at day 7,of the 32 patients negative for COVID-19,15(46.9%)had virus persistence in the EVs(Ct value,30.7±2.7),and on day 14,of the 56 patients with negative SARS-CoV-2,16 patients(28.6%)had positive SARS-CoV-2 RNAs in the EVs(Ct value,31.4±3.0).The mean viral load decreased on days 7 and 14 compared to baseline in the nasal swabs(P<0.001)but not in the EVs.Additionally,SARS-CoV-2 RNAs were undetectable in the plasma,but 12.5% of patients were positive in the plasma EVs.Significantly prolonged and high viral load was found in the EVs on day 14 in COVID-19 patients combined with CLD compared with COVID-19 patients(P?0.0004).We found significant higher levels of EV-associated with endothelial cells and hepatocytes in the COVID-19 t CLD group than COVID-19 group

电催化还原硝酸盐(NO3-)能有效转化NO3-为氨(NH3),实现废水中NO3-污染物的去除和NH3的生产.在本研究中,我们采用稀土元素镧掺杂的Co3O4纳米线阵列生长在碳布上(La-Co3O4/CC)作为高效的电催化剂,实现了NO3-向NH3的转化.La-Co3O4/CC展示了高的NH3法拉第效率(96.36%)和NH3产率(537.44μmol h-1cm-2),明显优于Co3O4(87.78%,279.4μmol h-1cm-2).理论计算表明,La掺杂促进了NO3-的吸附并优化了氢化过程,从而提高了Co3O4在NO3-转换和NH3选择性方面的电还原活性.此外,以La-Co3O4/CC组装的Zn-NO3-电池实现了9.86 mW cm-2的峰值功率密度.本项工作推动了基于Co3O4的电极在电催化领域的应用,并突显了稀土元素掺杂在NO3-还原反应中的有效性.

The traditional dynamical downscaling (TDD) method employs continuous integration of regional climate models (RCM) with the general circulation model (GCM) providing the initial and lateral boundary conditions. Dynamical downscaling simulations are constrained by physical principles and can generate a full set of climate information, providing one of the important approaches to projecting fine spatial-scale future climate information. However, the systematic biases of climate models often degrade the TDD simulations and hinder the application of dynamical downscaling in the climate-change related studies. New methods developed over past decades improve the performance of dynamical downscaling simulations. These methods can be divided into four groups: the TDD method, the pseudo global warming method, dynamical downscaling with GCM bias corrections, and dynamical downscaling with both GCM and RCM bias corrections. These dynamical downscaling methods are reviewed and compared in this paper. The merits and limitations of each dynamical downscaling method are also discussed. In addition, the challenges and potential directions in progressing dynamical downscaling methods are stated.
