Sandstones from the Neogene Siwalik successions of the East and West Siang Districts of Arunachal Pradesh were analyzed to evaluate source-area weathering,provenance,and tectonic setting by using major,trace,and rare earth elements(REEs)as proxies.The sandstones are classified as lithic arenite and wacke arenite based on their mineralogical compositions.The values of different weathering indices such as Chemical Index of Alteration(CIA;60.93–89.86)and Chemical Index of Weathering(CIW;40–96.8)suggest moderate to intense weathering in the source area.The plot of Th/Sc versus Zr/Sc indicates enrichment of zircon by sediment sorting and/or recycling from a weathered source.The high positive correlation between Al2 O_(3) and K2 O points towards a strong influence of the constituent clay minerals on the major oxide composition of the sandstones.Petrographic analysis together with enriched LREE,flat HREE,negative Eu anomalies(Eu/Eu^(*)=0.47 to 0.90)in the chondrite-normalized diagrams,and the ratios of La/Sc,La/Co,Th/Sc,Th/Co,Cr/Th collectively suggests that the Neogene sediments were derived from felsic igneous and/or reworked sedimentary/metasedimentary sources in an upper continental crustal setting.The geochemical characteristics of the studied Neogene Siwalik sandstones indicate that the sediments were sourced from pre-Himalayan gneisses and granitoids together with metabasic rocks,which had formed in a passive margin tectonic setup.

Tracks registration is influenced by the dynamic interplay between the pedal anatomy of the trackmaker,its behaviour,and the substrate conditions it interacts with.Differences in substrate conditions,especially those linked to grain size and moisture content,often result in the most dramatic variations in track morphology.In the upper Stormberg Group,main Karoo Basin of southern Africa,diverse trace fossils,primarily comprising Late Triassic—Early Jurassic dinosaur tracks,are preserved.Numerous studies have extensively documented individual ichnosites,investigating variations between sites over time,with recent studies suggesting that track abundance and anatomical fidelity increase up-stratigraphy.Despite the well-established link between substrate and track morphology,past studies have not specifically focused on substrate conditions,often emphasizing macro-sedimentary features instead.Here,we examine the micro-sedimentary features of track-bearing units in the upper Stormberg Group using petrographic techniques to better understand the palaeosubstrate and its effect on fossil track registration and preservation.The analysis revealed that very fine-grained sandstones and substrates modified by microbial activity tend to preserve tracks with greater abundance and/or higher anatomical fidelity.Furthermore,the prevalence of very fine-grained and microbially modified strata,and their associated track trends increases in younger stratigraphic units.Across the Triassic—Jurassic boundary in southern Africa,a boom in dinosaur track abundances is observed and credited to the proliferation of dinosaur populations during the Early Jurassic.Our findings,however,suggest that the observed local increase in track abundance(and anatomical fidelity)up-stratigraphy may be linked to substrate composition differences,which were ultimately controlled by large-scale changes in the palaeoenvironment from high-energy meandering fluvial to lower-energy aeolian-lacustrine settings in the Late Triassic and Early Jurassic,respectively.The

The main objective of this paper is to examine the influence of the applied confining stress on the rock mass modulus of moderately jointed rocks（well interlocked undisturbed rock mass with blocks formed by three or less intersecting joints）. A synthetic rock mass modelling（SRM） approach is employed to determine the mechanical properties of the rock mass. In this approach, the intact body of rock is represented by the discrete element method（DEM）-Voronoi grains with the ability of simulating the initiation and propagation of microcracks within the intact part of the model. The geometry of the preexisting joints is generated by employing discrete fracture network（DFN） modelling based on field joint data collected from the Brockville Tunnel using LiDAR scanning. The geometrical characteristics of the simulated joints at a representative sample size are first validated against the field data, and then used to measure the rock quality designation（RQD）, joint spacing, areal fracture intensity（P21）, and block volumes. These geometrical quantities are used to quantitatively determine a representative range of the geological strength index（GSI）. The results show that estimating the GSI using the RQD tends to make a closer estimate of the degree of blockiness that leads to GSI values corresponding to those obtained from direct visual observations of the rock mass conditions in the field. The use of joint spacing and block volume in order to quantify the GSI value range for the studied rock mass suggests a lower range compared to that evaluated in situ. Based on numerical modelling results and laboratory data of rock testing reported in the literature, a semi-empirical equation is proposed that relates the rock mass modulus to confinement as a function of the areal fracture intensity and joint stiffness.

This paper aims to unveit neotectonic imprints in topography, drainage and sediments in the 46.25 km tong course of the River Chet from its source down to its attuvial fan at the base of the Himatayan Mountain Front in the Darjeeting-Jatpaiguri districts of India. A semi-circutar ridge detimits its primary catchment. Within confinement of this watershed basin the drainage pattern is composite being convergent atong the periphery and divergent on a butte inside. AtE these geomorphic neotectonic imprints are accom- panied by ramp and fiat structures and spectacutar mytonitization of rocks. High hypsometric index and convex shape of the hypsometric curve derived from the centrat near-straight course of the river between the primary catchment and the Main Frontat Thrust （MFT） atso reftects tectonic youthfutness of the river course. It is wett manifested atso in widety variabte stream index and stream gradient index ratios （SL/K） often exceeding 2. In response to neotectonism, this river course as a whore shifted westward between 1962 and 2007. Maximum reduction of the stream gradient on top of the MFT is etoquent enough about recent uptift of the thrust ridge. The high average stope gradient of canyon watt about 45.68° is wett consistent with this uptift. Very tow channet-width/vaUey-height ratio along the river further corroborates the uptift. The attuviat fan system of the River Chet is comprised of five morphogenetic fans stacked one above another with a tendency to shrink and shift progressively upstope. They differ from each other in terms of titt, axiat orientation, primary depositionat surface gradient and convexity in transverse section and thus present a writ of ongoing tectonism. Progressive upward increase in the share of distat crystattine rocks in ctast composition within attuviat fan package is a dear proxy for southerty advancement of the MFT. The merging of multiple vortices is a fundamental process of the dynamics of Earth＇s atmosphere and oceans. In this study, the interaction of like-signed vortices is analytically and numerically examined in a framework of two-dimensional inviscid barotropic flows. It is shown that barotropic vortex interaction turns out to be more intricate than simple merging scenarios often assumed in previous studies. Some particular configurations exist in which the vortex merging process is never complete despite strong interaction of like-signed vortices, regardless of the strengths or distances between the vortices.While the conditions for a complete vortex merging process introduced in this study appear to be too strict for most practical applications, this study suggests that careful criteria for vortex mergers should be properly defined when simulating the interaction of vortices, because the merging may not always result in a final enhanced circulation at the end of the interaction,as usually assumed in the literature.

The Central Asian orogenic belt(CAOB),surrounded by the Baltica and Siberia cratons to the north,and the Tarim and North China cratons to the south,records successive evolution cycles of subduction and accretion/collision from Neoproterozoic to the Paleozoic that consumed and eventually closed the Paleo-Asian Ocean[1].Tectonic models of the terminal orogenesis are contentious,with discussions ranging from the time and location of final closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean to the regional context and setting of its various tectonic constituents.

Apatite fission-track analysis and thermochronologic statistical modeling of Precambrian-Oligocenc plutonic and metamorphic rocks from the Lesser Caucasus resolve two discrete cooling episodes.Cooling occurred during incremental crustal shortening due to obduction and continental accretion along the margins of the northern branch of the Neotethys.(1)The thermochronometric record of a Late Cretaceous(Turonian-Maastrichtian)cooling/exhumation event,coeval to widespread ophiolite obduction,is still present only in a relatively small area of the upper plate of the Amasia-Sevan-Akera(ASA)suture zone,i.***.the suture marking the final closure of the northern Neotethys during the Paleogene.Such area has not been affected by significant later exhumation.(2)Rapid cooling/exhumation occurred in the Early-Middle Miocene in both the lower and upper plates of the ASA suture zone,obscuring previous thermochronologic signatures over most of the study area.Miocene contractional reactivation of the ASA suture zone occurred contemporaneously with the main phase of shortening and exhumation along the Bitlis suture zone marking the closure of the southern branch of the Neotethys and the ensuing ArabiaEurasia collision.Miocene collisional stress from the Bitlis suture zone was transmitted northward across the Anatolian hinterland,which was left relatively undeformed,and focused along preexisting structural discontinuities such as the eastern Pontides and the ASA suture zone.

Geochemical Constraints of the Ediacaran Volcano-Sedimentary Succession of the Sa'al Metamorphic Complex at Wadi Zaghra, South Sinai, Egypt

The volcano-sedimentary succession around Wadi Zaghra in Sinai, at the northernmost segment of the Arabian Nubian Shield, comprises volcanic rocks interbedded with rather immature sediments. The succession is dominated by intermediate to silicic volcanics of medium-to high-K calc-alkaline affinity. It is divided into two units, the lower unit includes intermediate rocks and dacites interbedded with graywackes, semi-pelites and pelites and topped by polymict conglomerates. This unit is subjected to folding and regional metamorphism(up to garnet zone) and is intruded by quartz diorite-granodiorite inducing, locally, low-pressure contact thermal metamorphism. The unmetamorphosed upper unit encompasses acid volcanics intercalated with litharenite, sublitharenite and minor arenite. The rhyolites of this unit pertain to the highly fractionated granites and are characterized by an agpaitic index(NK/A) ranging from 0.87 to 0.96. They may reflect either extensive interaction of subduction-related magmas with the continental crust or a change in the tectonic regime. The present lithological and geochemical characteristics of the studied sediments together with available zircon ages indicate rather distal provenance of their detritus. This detritus comprises fluvial-alluvial sediments accumulated in the intermontane basins, which are half-grabens or tilted fault blocks. The tectonic setting of the depositional basins is active continental margin and continental island arcs. Geochemical patterns of the Zaghra volcano-sedimentary succession indicate their correlation with the Dokhan Volcanics-Hammamat Clastics sequence of the Eastern Desert of Egypt. Also, the Zaghra volcanics display geochemical similarities with those exposed in Sinai, at the Rutig, Ferani and Iqna Shar'a areas. The Zaghra succession is dated as Ediacaran but is not related either to the ensimatic island arc assemblage or to the rift-related assemblage formed during the early stages of the break-up of Rodinia as previously thought.

Production of voluminous igneous arc rocks,high-pressure/low-temperature(HP/LT) metamafic rocks,westward relative migration of the Klamath Mountains province,and U-Pb ages of deposition,sediment sources,and spatial locations of Jurassic and younger,detrital zirconbearing clastic rocks constrain geologic development of the northern California continental edge as follows:(1) At~ 175 Ma,transpressive plate underflow began to generate an Andean-type Klamath-Sierran arc along the margin.(2)Oceanic crustal rocks were metamorphosed under HP/LT conditions in an inboard,east-inclined subduction zone from~ 170-155 Ma.Except for the Red Ant blueschists,such Ethologies remained stored at depth;most HP/LT mafic tectonic blocks returned surfaceward only during mid- and Late Cretaceous time,chiefly entrained in circulating,buoyant Franciscan mud-matrix melange.(3) By ~ 165 Ma and continuing to ~ 150-140 Ma,erosion supplied volcanogenic debris to proximal Mariposa-Galice ± Myrtle overlap strata.(4) At ~ 140,immediately prior to the onset of paired Franciscan and Great Valley Group(GVG) +Hornbrook deposition,the Klamath salient was deformed and displaced ~ 100-150 km westward relative to the Sierran arc,stranding pre-existing oceanic crust on the south as the Coast Range Ophiolite(CRO).(5) After the end-ofJurassic seaward step-out of the Farallon-North American convergent plate junction,terrigineous debris began to be deposited in the outboard Franciscan trench and intervening Great Valley forearc.(6) Voluminous sedimentation and accretion of Franciscan Eastern + Central belts and GVG detritus took place during paroxysmal igneous activity and rapid,nearly orthogonal plate convergence at^125-80 Ma.(7) Sierran arc volcanism-plutonism ceased by^80 Ma in northern California,signaling a transition to shallow,nearly subhorizontal eastward plate underflow attending Laramide orogeny far to the east.(8) Presently exposed Paleogenelower Miocene Franciscan Coastal Belt sedimentary strata were deposited in a tectonic realm unaffected by HP/L

Rock bolts are one of the primary support systems utilized in underground excavations within the civil and mining engineering industries. Rock bolts support the weakened rock mass adjacent to the opening of an excavation by fastening to the more stable, undisturbed formations further from the excavation. The overall response of such a support element has been determined under varying loading conditions in the laboratory and in situ experiments in the past four decades; however, due to the limitations with conventional monitoring methods of capturing strain, there still exists a gap in knowledge associated with an understanding of the geomechanical responses of rock bolts at the microscale. In this paper, we try to address this current gap in scientific knowledge by utilizing a newly developed distributed optical strain sensing(DOS) technology that provides an exceptional spatial resolution of 0.65 mm to capture the strain along the rock bolt. This DOS technology utilizes Rayleigh optical frequency domain reflectometry(ROFDR) which provides unprecedented insight into various mechanisms associated with axially loaded rebar specimens of different embedment lengths, grouting materials, borehole annulus conditions, and borehole diameters. The embedment length of the specimens was found to be the factor that significantly affected the loading of the rebar. The critical embedment length for the fully grouted rock bolts(FGRBs) was systematically determined to be430 mm. The results herein highlight the effects of the variation of these individual parameters on the geomechanical responses FGRBs.
