Assessment of the Vulnerability of Riverine Cities and Their Coping Capacity against Floods (Case Study: ahvaz Metropolis)

Based on global statistics, floods rank the first among natural disasters that severely disrupt human life, property, and the environment. Iran, as one of the flood-prone countries, is located in southwestern Asia. The geographical elevation, maritime influences, seasonal winds, and proximity to mountain ranges or deserts play a significant role in its daily and seasonal temperature fluctuations, as well as its precipitation patterns and types. According to official statistics in Iran,among climate-related hazards, some 70% of the annual funds of the Plan for Reducing the Effects of Natural Disasters have been spent on compensation for damages from floods. Yet, what augments the importance of floods and their damages is the fact that human and urban centers have been located in flood-prone areas. Therefore, considering the dense populations and financial capitals in such areas, it is necessary to assess the vulnerability of urban floods, especially in big cities like ahvaz. This metropolis, as the capital of Khuzestan province, is located in the marshy plains with a population of over one million people. It is traversed by the country’s most water-rich river, the Karun. The aim of this study is to assess the vulnerability of ahvaz from flood as a natural hazard and its coping capacity. The methodology of the study is descriptiveanalytical and is based on its practical purpose. Fuzzy Hierarchy Model(Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process) has been used for the spatial analysis of vulnerability and the capacity to deal with floods. In summary, the findings are as follows:(a) Considering the floods that have occurred in the past six decades and comparing the affected areas with the results of this research in terms of highly vulnerable areas in the central part of the city, the model used has shown high efficiency in determining the vulnerability caused by urban flooding.(b) As far as vulnerability is concerned,location and physical–environmental conditions stimulate and rei

The rapid growth and development of Ahwaz city has many problems, such as the formation of marginal areas without a waste-water treatment system, the existence of industrial, agricultural and domestic waste water sources around Karun and the presence of undesirable dust *** attention to the development of ahvaz city is an inevitable necessity. Accordingly, this study aims to measure, analyze and prioritize the urban areas of ahvaz in terms of prosperity components, including productivity, development infrastructure, quality of life, equality and social inclusion, environmental sustainability and urban governance, which are very important for the realization of urban development. The data required in this research are collected from organizations and statistics of 2015. The weight of the criteria and the incompatibility ratio are calculated by the method of Analytical Hierarchy Process(AHP). In this research, ELECTRE I method is used to prioritize options. After calculating the standardized matrix, the matrix of compatibility and incompatibility, the difference between the values of mastery and failure was calculated. ArcGis 10.4 software is used to draw the map.

The Geological Study of the Role of Citizens’ Participation in Improvement of Municipal Services and Environment (Case Study: urban Area of Bagh-e Malek in Khuzestan Province of Iran)

The main purpose of the present research is to study geological issues of urban areas in Bagh-e Malek in Khuzestan province of Iran and improving the municipal environment. The present research is an applied study in sake of nature and a descriptive-analytical survey in sake of method. Library and field method has been used in data collection. In field study, 325 citizens in Bagh-e Malek in 2015 were selected as sample group via sampling method well suited to sample size using questionnaire of citizens’ participation. Software SPSS and Excel are used to analyze data. Friedman test has been used to determine rank of each of selected indices for testing hypotheses and finding research. Results from Friedman test indicate that satisfaction with pedestrian passages has the highest mean with rank (9.90) and awareness from municipality’s rights has the lowest mean with rank (2.95).

Assessment and Potential Survey of Lands in Khuzestan Province Using the Buckley Geometric Mean Model and Geographic Information System (GIS)

Today environmental assessment is considered and used as the basis and foundation of any kind of human activity. This is the science which gives human the consciousness about abilities and disabilities of his surroundings. This study tried to assess and provide the potential survey of lands in Khuzestan province for agricultural activities by taking into account the climatic elements and displaying different elements in different seasons. To achieve this goal, first produced data were analyzed in GIS software and then the data was tested by professors and experts of department of soil science and was weighted using the Buckley geometric mean model. Finally, the obtained weights were applied in the software and the obtained results are as follow: except some east parts of Khuzestan province which have proper climate for agricultural activities, other regions are not in good conditions and it is necessary to use cultivation with low water requirements and high resistance to heat and sunlight in these areas.

Estimating Monthly Evaporation Using Artificial Neural Networks

Predicting evaporation rate is one of important elements for hydrology planning. There are several methods to estimate evaporation from a water surface. The objective of this study was to test the capability of artificial neural networks （ANNs） to predict evaporation using 10 years data set （1999 to 2008） from ahvaz meteorological station and has been compared with values obtained using pan evaporation. Software Qnet 2000 has been utilized to model the evaporation. The Qnet 2000 was trained with monthly climate data （Solar radiation, minimum and maximum temperature, minimum and maximum relative humidity, and wind velocity） as input. The model was approximately implemented 144 times that finally hyperbolic secant stimulant function of 4 input parameters including minimum temperature, maximum temperature, solar radiation and wind velocity and 6 nodes in hidden layer has been yielded the best outcome. Correlation coefficients （R2） in training and testing sections are to 97.4% and 97.3% respectively. Also maximum errors in training and testing sections equaled to 18% and 24% respectively. Results showed ANNs approach works well for the data set used in this region.
