Disasters result from complex interactions of hazards and vulnerability conditions. Reducing human exposure and sensitivity to threats can reduce disaster impact. Prior knowledge about community vulnerability levels is crucial to minimizing potential losses from future threats. Most vulnerability studies focus on high-impact disasters and their temporal and spatial analyses. Yet highfrequency, low-impact disasters have a cumulative potential to severely disrupt or damage socioeconomic *** is limited knowledge especially in the global south about the creation of vulnerability to hydrometeorological threats. Using a systems approach, this study explores ways in which communities in the northern semiarid tropics of Zimbabwe are vulnerable to hydrometeorological *** predominantly qualitative study used literature review, interviews, transect walks, and focus groups to gather data from selected samples involving smallholder farmers with in-depth knowledge about community vulnerability. The results show that the communities are vulnerable to multiple hydrometeorological threats due to multiple interacting factors including rainfed and floodbased farming, land tenure, topography, climate, and other socioeconomic conditions such as inadequate income sources and high poverty. In order to reduce vulnerability,this study provides five policy options for government and nongovernmental organization interventions, including the need to transform rural economies beyond the traditional rainfed and flood-based farming systems.

Mitigating the catastrophic impacts of torrential rivers in semi-arid environments: a case of the Gash River in eastern Sudan

The climatic, geomorphic, hydrologic and aquifer characteristics of the torrential Gash River across mountainous areas, in far eastern Sudan, were analyzed in order to mitigate its recurring catastrophic impacts. Hydrologic and climatic data and interpretation of Gash River satellite images were from relevant research works carried out in Gash Basin from 1985 to 2008. The results indicated that the total catchment area of Gash River is about 21,000 km2, and the basin area is 31,000 km2. The total length of Gash River is 450 km and the average slope is 200 cm/km. The width of the catchment varies from 30 m to 90 m and that of the basin is from 100 m to 800 m, and the course of the river is varied. During the period of 1980？2008, the mean annual rainfall was 250 mm and the mean annual discharge was 6.8 ×10~8 m^3, and the flooding is approximately one time per 5 years. Torrential floods measured at Kassala town since 1907 showed that an absolute maximum discharge was 876 m3/s and a mean maximum discharge was 365 m3/s. These characteristics differ widely between catchment and basin areas. The author proposes that, by analyzing the climatic, geomorphic, hydrologic and aquifer characteristics of the Gash River and considering the role of community, a concise database could be provided to formulate the aquifer, geomorphic, hydrologic and climatic （AQUIGEOHYCLIM） regional approach to mitigate Gash River recurring catastrophic impacts.

The International Association of Hydrological Sciences （IAHS） recognized the lack of hydro- logical data as a world-wide problem in 2002 and adopted the Prediction of Ungauged Basins （PUB） as a decadal research agenda during the period of 2003 to 2012. One of the objectives is to further develop methodologies for prediction in ungauged basins and to reduce uncertainties in model prediction. Estimation of stream flows is required for flood control, water quality control, valley habitat assessment and water budget of a country. However, the majority of water catchments, streams and valleys are ungauged in most developing countries. The main objective of this paper is to introduce the IHACRES （Identification of Hy- drographs and Components from Rainfall, Evaporation and Stream） model into African hydrological plan- ning as a methodology for water resources assessment, which in turn can be used to resolve water conflicts between communities and countries and to study the climate change issues. This is because the IHACRES model is applied for the estimation of flows in ungauged catchments whose physical catchments descriptors （PCDs） can be determined by driving variables （i.e. rainfall and temperature）; and also in gauged streams but whose gauging stations are no longer operational but historical data are available for model calibration. The model provides a valuable insight into the hydrologic behaviour of the upper water sources for valleys as well as provides a useful methodology for water resources assessment in situations of scarce financial resources in developing countries. In addition, it requires relatively few parameters in its calibration and has been successful applied in previous regionalization studies. It will also make possible the equitable distri- bution of water resources in international basins and rivers＇ catchments. This paper does not apply the model anywhere, but recommends it as a methodology for water resources assessment in order to cure water

BACKGROUND 2D-echocardiography(2DE)has been the primary imaging modality in children with Kawasaki disease(KD)to assess coronary *** To report the presence and implications of incidental congenital coronary artery anomalies that had been misinterpreted as coronary artery abnormalities(CAAs)on *** Records of children diagnosed with KD,who underwent computed tomography coronary angiography(CTCA)at our center between 2013-2023 were *** identified 3 children with congenital coronary artery anomalies in this cohort on *** of CTCA and 2DE were compared in these 3 *** Of the 241 patients with KD who underwent CTCA,3(1.24%)had congenital coronary artery anomalies on CTCA detected *** all 3 patients,baseline 2DE had identified *** was then performed for detailed evaluation as per our unit ***(11-year-boy)amongst the 3 patients had complete KD,while the other two(3.3-year-boy;4-month-girl)had incomplete *** revealed separate origins of left anterior descending artery and left circumflex from left sinus[misinterpreted as dilated left main coronary artery(LCA)on 2DE],single coronary artery(interpreted as dilated LCA on 2DE)and dilated right coronary artery on 2DE in case of anomalous origin of LCA from the main pulmonary *** latter one was subsequently operated *** CTCA is essential for detailed assessment of coronary arteries in children with KD especially in cases where there is suspicion of congenital coronary artery *** solely on 2DE may not be sufficient in such cases,and findings from CTCA can significantly impact therapeutic decision-making.

This research is concerned with an analysis of the level of vulnerability for an earthquake disaster in Lembang district,an area in West Java that includes the Bandung basin and has a high potential for earthquake *** Lembang district is close to the active Lembang fault whose movement can cause earthquakes of magnitude 7 on the Richter scale(Tempo Interaktif,May 11,2010).The research method used to assess the level of vulnerability is essentially a descriptive *** data analysis is based on calculating an earthquake disaster risk index(EDRI),which is in turn based on assessment of the region's social,physical and economic *** vulnerability level for earthquake disaster in the Lembang is ranked as medium *** social vulnerability of the population is the major contributing factor given the high population density and growth rate for the *** physical characteristics of the district,which includes mild temperatures and attractive scenery,make many people want to stay in and visit *** construction quality of buildings is so bad that they are not designed to withstand earthquakes,so improvement of building infrastructure is an alternative to reducing the various physical vulnerabilities.

This is the first study seasonally applying Sphagnum papillosum moss bags and vertical snow samples for monitoring atmospheric *** bags,exposed in January,were collected together with snow samples by early March 2012 near the Harjavalta Industrial Park in southwest ***,chemical,scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy（SEM-EDX）,K-means clustering,and Tomlinson pollution load index（PLI）data showed parallel spatial trends of pollution dispersal for both *** strengthen previous findings that concentrate and slag handling activities were important（dust）emission sources while the impact from Cu–Ni smelter＇s pipe remained secondary at closer *** significant correlations existed between the variables of snow and moss *** a summary,both methods work well for sampling and are efficient pollutant *** bags can be used also in winter conditions and they provide more homogeneous and better controlled sampling method than snow samples.
