Switching to alternative transit:combining bicycle safety improvements with parking regulations

Smart growth policies advocate for economically viable,environmentally conscientious,and socially equitable solutions for urban development.These policies were developed largely in response to issues rooted in the automobile-oriented culture:air pollution,high greenhouse gas emissions,traffic congestion,and sedentary lifestyles.In urban settings,a good transportation alternative is cycling,since it is able to serve the travel needs of nearly half of city dwellers' daily trips.Many European and Canadian cities have successfully increased cycling rates by creating safer bicycle environments and restricting or discouraging automobile use.To evaluate the potential effects of the above measures on American urban areas,this paper examines case studies of cycle tracks and bicycle boulevards implemented in American cities,and how these facility improvements have changed how safe cyclists feel on the road and overall bicycle usage.Results show the two methods are indeed effective in increasing bicycle usage rates.Ultimately,increasing cycling rates needs policies to discourage people from driving,the greatest mode share in nearly all urban areas.Parking policy has major impacts on people's decision to use the automobile.Currently,parking is oversupplied and underpriced in many cities,making it irresistible for people to drive.Decreasing the number of parking spaces available and increasing their price will increase pressure on drivers to drive less,especially for short trips,and to bike instead.It is important for planners and policy makers to realize that solutions from both directions,making biking more enjoyable and making parking,and hence driving,less affordable,should be used in tandem.The complementary nature of the two approaches makes it so the effect of the combination is greater than the sum of the two.

Anthropogenic Pseudokarstic Depressions on Mount Bocskor(Bakony Region, Hungary)

Surface forms above the mine(ármin mine) of Mount Bocskor(Southern Bakony, Hungary) were examined. We made contour maps, plan maps, morphological maps and atectonic grike(cave) maps of some of the forms and their surroundings. We examined the distribution of the depth, length, elongation ratio in case of some depressions, the relation between the depth and the diameter of some depressions, the relationship between depression group directions and mine cut directions, the standard deviation of the direction differences of depression groups and of their depressions. The forms of the mountain related to surface mining can be separated to open and closed. The former are trenches and stairs, the latter are circular, elongated, and complex depressions. The formation of these forms can be related to the balancing movements of the vault over the mountain’s mine. At thin vault, stairs develop by collapses, while at the atectonic fissures of thicker vault, trenches and depressions are formed at the surface. In areas bordered by sinking(subsidence through) and downwardly cohesive faults, depression groups of diverse features are arranged in the marginal bands. Elongated depressions are formed at atectonic blocks bounded by dispersing faults in non-banded distribution. Where there is a superficial deposit, atectonic fissures can also be inherited directly by collapse to the surface and form depressions. They can also form indirectly over atectonic fissures by compaction, subsequent collapse and/or suffosion of the superficial deposit. The results of the study make it possible to analyse the material loss due to mining on the vault if the atectonic structures of the vault are partly or completely covered by superficial deposit.

Hillslope coupled stream morphology, flow conditions, and their effects on detrital sedimentology in Garnet Canyon, Teton Range,Wyoming

Characterizing stream erosion in any steep mountain landscape is arduous, but the challenge level increases when the stream flows through a glaciated catchment frequently modified by hillslope debris.Glacial landforms and stochastic mass wasting in alpine systems may interfere with sediment delivery to downstream sites where detrital sediments are often collected to represent upstream bedrock sources.To use detrital sediments as indicators of erosion, we need to understand potential sediment accumulation in flat glaciated reaches or behind rockfall barriers. This study investigates the stream channel in Garnet Canyon, a glaciated catchment located in the central Teton Range, to describe hillslope coupled channel morphology and the subsequent effects on sediment transport throughout the catchment.Stream cross-section surveys and sediment size measurements of the surface bedload were collected in the field within a glacially flattened segment of Garnet Canyon. Calculations of shear stress conditions allowed evaluation of the importance of mineral densities on potential grain entrainment. The length of the Garnet Canyon stream observed in this study was coupled with hillslope deposits. Critical shear stresses were sufficient to move gravel-sized sediments through all sections when calculated with quartz mineral density and through most sections when applying apatite mineral density. These results verify the application of detrital sediments to evaluate erosion rates or spatial bedrock sources because snowmelt stream flow efficiently moves entrained sediment past glacially reduced slopes and potential talus barriers.

A Comparative Analysis of Binary Logistic Regression and Analytical Hierarchy Process for Landslide Susceptibility Assessment in the Dobrovǎt River Basin,Romania

A correct assessment of the landslide susceptibility component is extremely useful for the diminution of associated potential risks to local economic development, particularly in regard to land use planning and soil conservation. The purpose of the present study was to compare the usefulness of two methods, i.e., binary logistic regression(BLR) and analytical hierarchy process(AHP), for the assessment of landslide susceptibility over a 130-km^2 area in the Moldavian Plateau(eastern Romania) region, where landslides affect large areas and render them unsuitable for agriculture. A large scale inventory mapping of all types of landslides(covering 13.7% of the total area) was performed using orthophoto images, topographical maps, and field surveys. A geographic information system database was created, comprising the nine potential factors considered as most relevant for the landsliding process. Five factors(altitude, slope angle, slope aspect, surface lithology, and land use) were further selected for analysis through the application of a tolerance test and the stepwise filtering procedure of BLR. For each predictor, a corresponding raster layer was built and a dense grid of equally spaced points was generated, with an approximately equal number of points inside and outside the landslide area, in order to extract the values of the predictors from raster layers. Approximately half of the total number of points was used for model computation, while the other half was used for validation. Analytical hierarchy process was employed to derive factor weights, with several pair-wise comparison matrices being tested for this purpose. The class weights, on a scale of 0 to 1, were taken as normalized landslide densities. A comparison of results achieved through these two approaches showed that BLR was better suited for mapping landslide susceptibility, with 82.8% of the landslide area falling into the high and very high susceptibility classes. A new machine-learning-based algorithm deriving melt extent from satellite data [1] has shown that the timing of the melt season over Antarctica has shifted between 1978 and 2020.The later onset and end of the melt season result from complex interactions between the general circulation around Antarctica and sea-ice cover impacting heat exchanges between atmosphere and ocean around the ice sheet.

Population collapses in the pre-modern period:case study of the Fuping County, Northwest China

The pre-modern history of population change in the Fuping County(Shaanxi Province, China)during the Ming and Qing Dynasties(AD 1368-1911) was reconstructed using historical sources.The Fuping County experienced two major population collapses, i.e. the late Ming Dynasty(1550-1640 s) and the 1860-1880 s. The first one was caused by the great AD 1556 earthquake and the extreme droughts and warfare in the 1630-1640 s. The second one was caused by warfare and extreme droughts. As a whole, natural disasters, including extreme drought and great earthquake, were the key direct causes of population collapse, and climatic cooling would be a potential indirect cause. It is very interesting that population collapses occurred almost synchronously in the Fuping County and whole China, and the trends of population change were also very similar. Climate-population relationship in China would be valid at finer geographic level,and climatic cooling could be a potential indirect cause of population collapse.

An improved knowledge-informed NSGA-II for multi-objective land allocation (MOLA)

Multi-objective land allocation(MOLA)can be regarded as a spatial optimization problem that allocates appropriate use to certain land units subjecting to multiple objectives and constraints.This article develops an improved knowledge-informed non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II(NSGA-II)for solving the MOLA problem by integrating the patch-based,edge growing/decreasing,neighborhood,and constraint steering rules.By applying both the classical and the knowledge-informed NSGA-II to a simulated planning area of 30×30 grid,we find that:when compared to the classical NSGA-II,the knowledge-informed NSGA-II consistently produces solutions much closer to the true Pareto front within shorter computation time without sacrificing the solution diversity;the knowledge-informed NSGA-II is more effective and more efficient in encouraging compact land allocation;the solutions produced by the knowledge-informed have less scattered/isolated land units and provide a good compromise between construction sprawl and conservation land protection.The better performance proves that knowledge-informed NSGA-II is a more reasonable and desirable approach in the planning context.

Spatio-temporal Dynamic of Quality of Life of Residents, Northeast China

Quality of life(QOL) is a hotspot issue that has attracted increasing attention from the Chinese Government and scholars, it is also a vital issue that should be addressed during the cause of ′establishing overall well-off society′. Northeast China is one of the most import old industrial bases in China, however, the industrial structure of heavy chemical industry and the development mode of ′production first, living last′ have leaded to series of social problems, which have also become a serious bottleneck to social stability and economic sustainable development. Through applying the methods of BP neural network, exploratory spatial data analysis(ESDA) and spatial regression model, this paper examines the space-time dynamics of QOL of the residents in Northeast China. We first investigate the indexes of QOL of the residents and then use ESDA methods to visualize its space-time relationship. We have found a spatial agglomeration of QOL of the residents in middle-southern Liaoning Province, central Jilin Province and Harbin-Qiqihar-Daqing area of Heilongjiang Province. Two third of the counties are low-low spatial correlation, and the correlative type of about 60% of the prefecture level areas keeps stable, indicating QOL of the residents in Northeast China shows a certain character of path dependence or spatial locked. We have also found that economic strength and development levels of service industry have positive and obvious effect on QOL of the residents, while the effect of such indexes as the social service level and the proportion of the tertiary industries are less.

Karst Types and Their Karstification

Eighty-one karst types and their main characteristics are described in this study,including the conditions of their development,the main characteristics of their karstification and their characteristic features.The classification includes the karst types of the Earth,a concise description of each karst type and the possibilities of belonging to several types of various karst areas.The classification of types is hierarchical in terms of groups,subgroups,types and subtypes.Karst can be classified according to their momentary state(the group of static karst types)and to their development(group of dynamic karst types).The group of static karst types has the azonal and zonal subgroups.Azonal karst types may be situated under any climate.These karst types are categorized according to their geological characteristics(age of karstification,constituting rock,extent of coveredness,structure),their elevation,expansion,the morphology of their surface,hydrology and to the effects occurring on the karst.Taking the above mentioned factors into consideration,the author distinguishes various types and describes their characteristics.Zonal karst types are also described(tundra karst,temperate karst,subtropical karst,tropical karst),karst types that can be distinguished based on their geomorphic evolution are identified and their characteristics are presented.

DEM Fusion using a modified k-means clustering algorithm

Digital elevation models(DEMs)are a necessary dataset for modelling the Earth’s surface;however,all DEMs contain error.Researchers can reduce this error using DEM fusion techniques since numerous DEMs can be available for a region.However,the use of a clustering algorithm in DEM fusion has not been previously reported.In this study a new DEM fusion algorithm based on a clustering approach that works on multiple DEMs to exploit consistency in the estimates as indicators of accuracy and precision is presented.The fusion approach includes slope and elevation thresholding,k-means clustering of the elevation estimates at each cell location,as well as filtering and smoothing of the fusion product.Corroboration of the input DEMs,and the products of each step of the fusion algorithm,with a higher accuracy reference DEM enabled a detailed analysis of the effectiveness of the DEM fusion algorithm.The main findings of the research were:the k-means clustering of the elevations reduced the precision which also impacted the overall accuracy of the estimates;the number of final cluster members and the standard deviation of elevations before clustering both had a strong relationship to the error in the k-means estimates.
