Characteristics of water erosion and conservation practice in arid regions of Central Asia:Xinjiang,China as an example

Located in the inland arid area of Central Asia and northwest China,Xinjiang has recently received heightened concerns over soil water erosion,which is highly related with the sustainable utilization of barren soil and limited water *** from the national soil erosion survey of China(1985-2011)and Xinjiang statistical yearbook(2000-2010)was used to analyze the trend,intensity,and serious soil water erosion *** showed that the water erosion area in Xinjiang was 87.6103 km^(2) in 2011,mainly distributed in the Ili river valley and the northern and southern Tian *** erosion gradient was generally slight and the average erosion modulus was 2184 t/(km^(2) a).During the last 26 years,the water erosion area in Xinjiang decreased by 23.2%,whereas the intensity was still *** driving factors from large to small impact included:population boom and human activities4vegetation degradation4rainfall and climate change4topography and soil erodibility4tectonics *** water erosion resulted in eco-environmental and socioeconomic losses,such as destroying farmland and grassland,triggering floods,sedimentation of reservoirs,damaging transportation and irrigation facilities,and aggravating poverty.A landscape ecological design approach is suggested for integrated control of soil ***,an average of 2.07×10^(3) km^(2) of formerly eroded area is conserved each *** study highlighted the importance and longevity of soil and water conservation efforts in Xinjiang,and offered some suggestions on ecological restoration and combating desertification in arid regions of Central Asia.&2015 International Research and Training Center on Erosion and Sedimentation and China Water and Power *** and Hosting by Elsevier *** is an open access article under the CC BY-NC-ND license(http://***/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/).

Clinical Predictors of Prolonged Hospital Stay after Acute Stroke: Relevance of Medical Complications

Purpose: This study aims to identify clinical predictors of prolonged hospital stay after acute stroke based on data collected from a prospective hospital-based acute stroke registry. Methods: All patients with first-ever ischemic stroke and primary intracerebral hemorrhage included in the Sagrat Cor Hospital of Barcelona stroke database over a 17-year period were assessed. Prolonged hospital stay was defined as hospitalization for longer than 12 days after admission. Demographic data, cardiovascular risk factors, clinical factors, neuroimaging findings, and outcome were compared in patients hospitalized for more or less than 12 days. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess the independent influence of statistically significant variables in the bivariate analysis and duration of hospitalization. Results: Of a total of 3112 acute stroke patients included in the study, prolonged hospital stay was recorded in 1536 (49.4%). Male sex (OR = 1.16), limb weakness (OR = 1.79), vascular complications (OR = 2.68), urinary complications (OR = 2.56), and infectious complications (OR = 1.78) were independently associated with longer stay, whereas symptom free at discharge (OR = 0.45) and lacunar infarction (OR = 0.43) were inversely associated with prolonged hospitalization. Conclusion: In-hospital medical complications (vascular, urinary, and infectious) are relevant factors influencing duration of hospitalization after acute stroke. Therefore, prevention of potentially modifiable risk factors for medical complications is an important aspect of the early management of patients with stroke.

Nitrogen release characteristics of polyethylene-coated controlled-release fertilizers and their dependence on membrane pore structure

In this study, controlled-release fertilizers （CRFs） with five different nitrogen release periods were pre- pared by coating large urea particles with polyethylene （PE） membranes under various experimental conditions. The preliminary and differential solubility rates, release periods, and membrane pore sizes of the obtained CRFs were measured using water immersion, scanning electron microscopy, and mercury porosimetry. For all CRF samples, the median pore diameters of the membranes were equal to 4.5-5.3 nm and pores with sizes smaller than 10 nm accounted for 86-96% of the total pore surface area. The obtained pore diameter distributions differed for the five studied types of CRF, having release periods of 1,2, 4, 6, and 8 months. Thus, for the CRFs with a 1-month release period, the maximum pore diameter reached a magnitude of 4000 nm, while this value did not exceed 30 nm for the CRFs with a release period of 8 months. Hence, we have established a relationship between the release period of CRFs and their effective maximum pore sizes.

Sky brightness is an essential topic in the field of astronomy, especially for optical astronom- ical observations that need very clear and dark sky conditions. This study presents the spatial model of sky brightness magnitude in Langkawi Island, Malaysia. Two types of Sky Quality Meter （SQM） manu- factured by Unihedron are used to measure the sky brightness on a moonless night （or when the Moon is below the horizon）, when the sky is cloudless and the locations are at least 100 m from the nearest light source. The selected locations are marked by their GPS coordinates. The sky brightness data obtained in this study were interpolated and analyzed using a Geographic Information System （GIS）, thus producing a spatial model of sky brightness that clearly shows the dark and bright sky areas in Langkawi Island. Surprisingly, our results show the existence of a few dark sites nearby areas of high human activity. The sky brightness of 21.45 mag arcsec-2 in the Johnson-Cousins V-band, as the average of sky brightness equivalent to 2.8 × 10-4cd m-2 over the entire island, is an indication that the island is, overall, still relatively dark. However, the amount of development taking place might reduce the number in the near future as the island is famous as a holiday destination.

Highway Infrastructure, Protected Areas, and Orchid Bee Distribution and Conservation in the Brazilian Amazon

Scientists regularly lament that development and habitat destruction in once isolated and distant areas are promoting species extinction before species can even be known by science. In the Brazilian Amazon, the government’s Plan for Growth Acceleration in part involves major improvements and expansion of highways. Such infrastructure has long been linked to the main causes of deforestation in this region. It is essential for scientists to assess where to target bio-diversity collections in relation to the location of road development and existing protected areas. The objective of this study was to amass all of the records of occurrence of orchid bees in digital form, in order to obtain a spatial picture of our knowledge thus far and to make recommendations about priority areas for future collections and the role of protected areas in species conservation. The collection data used for this study come from various collection efforts, and were also gathered from the literature. The collection data were then imported into a Geographic Information System, making it possible to integrate other spatial data layers such as highways, conservation units, indigenous lands and forest cover. Results show a major need for collections along the BR 163 and BR 230 highways, heavily deforested areas with few conservation units. We suggest the creation of conservation units and recommend that abandoned areas be allowed to remain fallow as a way to help save additional biodiversity in the area of influence of these two main highways.

Flow patterns and critical criteria of thermally stratified shear flow in braided rivers

Flow characteristics of thermally stratified shear flow in braided rivers are particularly complicated and poorly understood. In this study, a series of typical flow patterns was examined and their critical criteria were determined. Four flow patterns were identified: mixed, locally unstable, continuously stratified, and two-layer flow. Temperature distributions of the four types of flow patterns were analyzed and *** critical Froude numbers for unstable flow, FDcr1, and stable flow, FDcr2, were determined to be 6 and 1, respectively, and comparison of FDcr1 and FDcr2 to the peak Froude numbers, FD1 at the outer bank and FD2 at the inner bank along the anabranch, allowed the flow patterns to be assessed. Then, a discriminant based on initial Jeffreys-Keulegan stability parameters was established to distinguish the flow stages from twolayer flow to completely mixed flow. It is indicated that the three critical Jeffreys-Keulegan parameters increased with the diversion angle of braided rivers. Results also show that, compared to the stratified flow in straight and curved channels, it was more difficult for braided stratified flow to maintain as two-layer flow, and it more easily became mixed flow. Consequently, empirical expressions for stability criteria of the thermally stratified shear flow in braided rivers are presented.

Embedding based quantile regression neural network for probabilistic load forecasting

Compared to traditional point load forecasting,probabilistic load forecasting(PLF) has great significance in advanced system scheduling and planning with higher reliability. Medium term probabilistic load forecasting with a resolution to an hour has turned out to be practical especially in medium term energy trading and can enhance the performance of forecasting compared to those only utilizing daily information. Two main uncertainties exist when PLF is implemented: the first is the temperature fluctuation at the same time of each year; the second is the load variation which means that even if observed indicators are fixed since other observed external indicators can be responsible for the variation. Therefore, we propose a hybrid model considering both temperature uncertainty and load variation to generate medium term probabilistic forecasting with hourly resolution. An innovative quantile regression neural network with parameter embedding is established to capture the load variation, and a temperature scenario based technique is utilized to generate temperatureforecasting in a probabilistic manner. It turns out that the proposed method overrides commonly used benchmark models in the case study.

How Built Environment Affects the Mental Health of Urban Older Adults: Contrasting Perspective Based on Observation and Perception

The basic attributes of urban built environment are important factors affecting mental state of older *** and perception are expressions of built environment from objective and subjective perspectives,and their comprehensive effects on older adults’ mental health have not yet been explored and *** with the ecological model of active living,the social-ecological model for health and environmental psychology for health,this paper took Dalian as an example and integrated multi-source spatio-temporal data,to compare and examine the internal influence mechanism of built environment on older adults’ mental health from objective and perceptual perspectives through structural equation *** model was further validated by excluding the samples of residential *** study showed that the proximity and aggregation degree of basic service facilities,such as supermarkets,restaurants,and barbershops,affected older adults’ mental health through direct and perceived mediating paths,in which the high degree of aggregation had a negative effect on the mental health of older adults through perceived paths of noise,insecurity,and poor environmental sanitation;the density of walking path and the local integration,depth,and connectivity of vehicle path had limited interventions on mentality dimension of older adults;the diversity of leisure,landscape,and exercise facilities in community positively affected older adults’ mental health through the direct and perceived mediating paths;underground parking in community and lifts in high-rise buildings had a more positive impact on older adults’ mental health than ground parking and stairs in multi-story ***,compared with objective built environment,perceived built environment had a mediating effect and played a more significant role in the mental health of older adults.
