Berberine(BBR) is an organic small molecule isolated from various plants that have been used in traditional Chinese medicine. Isolation of this compound was its induction into modern medicine, and its usefulness became quickly apparent as seen in its ability to combat bacterial diarrhea, type 2 diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, inflammation, heart diseases, and more. However, BBR's effects on neurodegenerative diseases remained relatively unexplored until its ability to stunt Alzheimer's disease(AD) progression was characterized. In this review, we will delve into the multi-faceted defensive capabilities and bio-molecular pathways of BBR against AD, Parkinson's disease(PD), and trauma-induced neurodegeneration. The multiple effects of BBR, some of which enhance neuro-protective factors/pathways and others counteract targets that induce neurodegeneration, suggest that there are many more branches to the diverse capabilities of BBR that have yet to be uncovered. The promising results seen provide a convincing and substantial basis to support further scientific exploration and development of the therapeutic potential of BBR against neurodegenerative diseases.

The present study was aimed to assess the ability of Bacillus ***-2-1 and Staphylococcus capitis to reduce hexavalent chromium into its trivalent *** ***-2-1 could tolerate Cr（Ⅵ）（4800 μg/mL） and *** could tolerate Cr（Ⅵ）（2800 μg/mL）.Both organisms were able to resist Cd^2＋（50 μg/mL）,Cu^2＋（200 μg/mL）,Pb^2＋（800 μg/mL）,Hg^2＋（50 μg/mL） and Ni2＋（4000 μg/mL）.*** resisted Zn^2＋ at 700 μg/mL while Bacillus ***-2-1 only showed resistance up to 50 μg/*** ***-2-1 and *** showed optimum growth at pH 6 and 7,respectively,while both bacteria showed optimum growth at 37°*** ***-2-1 and *** could reduce 85% and 81% of hexavalent chromium from the medium after 96 h and were also capable of reducing hexavalent chromium 86% and 89%,respectively,from the industrial effuents after 144 *** free extracts of Bacillus ***-2-1 and *** showed reduction of 83% and 70% at concentration of 10 μg Cr（Ⅵ）/mL,*** presence of an induced protein having molecular weight around 25 kDa in the presence of chromium points out a possible role of this protein in chromium *** bacterial isolates can be exploited for the bioremediation of hexavalent chromium containing wastes,since they seem to have a potential to reduce the toxic hexavalent form to its nontoxic trivalent form.

Objective: To identify the region conferring stability to pBSSB2(a linear plasmid, pBSSB1, containing a kanamycin cassette), which is unique to Indonesian isolates of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi. Methods: The open reading frame(ORF) 009 was identified as a toxin coding gene in the plasmid through introduction of translational termination codons in the ORF. Results: The stability function was located in a fragment that spanned nucleotides 5 766 to 6 828 in the linear plasmid genetic map. Ectopic expression of ORF009 in pBAD18 vector indicated ORF009 codes for a toxin. This fragment could stabilize plasmid pUC18 previously destabilized through mutation of the pcnB(plasmid copy number control) gene that codes for polyA polymerase. Majority of the cells expressing ORF009 were non-viable according to phase contrast microscopy. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that a linear plasmid fragment that carries a gene encoding a toxin possibly conferred stability to the parent plasmid. It was able to stabilize a multicopy plasmid of Escherichia coli.

Irisin is a myokine that is generated by cleavage of the membrane protein fibronectin type Ⅲ domain-containing protein 5(FNDC5) in response to physical exercise. Studies reveal that irisin/FNDC5 has neuroprotective functions against Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia in the elderly, by improving cognitive function and reducing amyloid-β and tau pathologies as well as neuroinflammation in cell culture or animal models of Alzheimer's disease. Although current and ongoing studies on irisin/FNDC5 show promising results, further mechanistic studies are required to clarify its potential as a meaningful therapeutic target for alleviating Alzheimer's disease. We recently found that irisin treatment reduces amyloid-β pathology by increasing the activity/levels of amyloid-β-degrading enzyme neprilysin secreted from astrocytes. Herein, we present an overview of irisin/FNDC5's protective roles and mechanisms against Alzheimer's disease.

Alleviation of nickel stress by halophilic bacteria in mungbean(Vigna radiata)

Mungbean is an important, short-duration legume crop with high nutritive value for poor families, where protein and micronutrient scarcity are most pervasive. In developing countries, like Pakistan, where mungbean is one of the greatest sources of protein for underprivileged people, salinity and metal stresses are drastically limiting its yield. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the ways for promoting the growth of mungbean under stressed conditions. This study provides the basis for the use of two previously isolated halophilic and nickel-resistant bacteria [Bacillus subtilis and Halomonas aquamarina(1)] in promoting the growth of mungbean plant under nickel-stressed environments. These bacterial strains were previously found to improve the growth of plants under salinity because of their good biofilm-forming abilities. We hypothesized that these two halophilic and nickel-resistant biofilm-forming bacteria can help the plants to grow under nickel-stressed environments by promoting soil aggregation as they were previously reported to resist salinity and nickel stress, as well as were found to promote plant growth under saline environments. The results revealed that under nickel stress, both bacteria promote plant growth by facilitating the formation of soil aggregates through an increase in their extra polymeric substance(EPS) production.
