Central Vietnam is very susceptible to soil erosion due to its complicated terrain and heavy rainfall. The objective of this study was to quantify soil erosion in the A Sap river basin, A Luoi district, Thua Thien Hue Province, Vietnam, using the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) and Geographical Informa-tion System (gis). The results showed that 34% of land area lost accumulated to 10 t ha-1 year-1 while 47% of the total area lost less than 1 t ha-1 year-1. Natural forest land lost the most with an average of about 19 t ha-1 year-1, followed by plantation forest with approximately 7 t ha-1 year-1 and other agricultural lands at 3.70 and 1.45 t ha-1 year-1 for yearly crops and paddy rice, respectively. Soil erosion was most sensitive to the topographic factor (LS), followed by the practice support factor (P), soil erodibility factor (K), cropping management (C), and the rainfall erosivity factor (R). Implications are that changes to the cultivated calendar and implementing intercropping are effective ways to prevent soil erosion in cultivated lands. Furthermore, introducing broad leaves trees for mountainous areas in A Sap basin was the most effective practice in reducing soil erosion. The study also pointed out that the combination of available data sources used with the USLE and gis technology is a viable option to cal-culate soil erosion in Central Vietnam, which would allow targeted attention toward a solution is to reduce future soil erosion.

Urban growth represents specific response to economic, demographic and environmental conditions. Rapid urbanization and industrializations have resulted in sharp land cover changes. The present investigation was carried out from Shaoxing City to quantify satellite-derived estimates of urban growth using a three-epoch time series Landsat TM data for the years 1984, 1997 and ETM 2000. The methodology used was based on post classification comparison. The use of gis allowed spatial analysis of the data derived from remotely sensed images. Results showed that the built-up area surrounding Shaoxing City has expanded at an annual average of 7 km2. Analysis of the classified map showed that the physical growth of urban area is upsetting the other land cover classes such as farming, water resources, etc. The study conclusion mainly emphasized the need for sustainable urban capacity.

Ages of the stratigraphic boundary MIS1/2 and MIS3/4 of the Yuanbu loess section in Linxia are used as the basis of the nodal control age. The age of MIS1/2 and MIS3/4 are obtained from the latest international research result—the climatic events recorded in the stalagmite in the Hulu Cave in Nanjing, that MIS1/2 is 11.5 kaB.P. and MIS3/4 is 59.8 kaB.P.. The ages of the two climatic events contain three nodal age control models (Model 1: 0 kaB.P.—59.8 kaB.P.; Model 2: 0 kaB.P.—11.5 kaB.P. and 11.5 kaB.P.—59.8 kaB.P.; Model 3: 11.5 kaB.P.—59.8 kaB.P.), which are used as the nodal control age separately. The deposition times of various stratigraphic horizons are calculated by using the magnetic susceptibility age model and grain-size age model, and then compared with each other. In addition, the AMS14C age, OSL age and the ages of YD and H events are compared with the ages of the corresponding horizons calculated by the three models of nodal control ages. From the analyses of lithologic characters and climatic stages it has been found that both the magnetic susceptibility age model and the grain-size age model have some defects. Because the accurate control ages are selected as the nodal points of the glacial period or interglacial period, the stratigraphic deposition times determined by the high resolution of magnetic susceptibility age model and grain-size age model approximate to the actual ages. As for the relative accuracy of the two age models, the magnetic susceptibility age model is more accurate than the grain-size age model.

Soil erosion is a crucial geo-environmental hazard worldwide that affects water quality and agriculture,decreases reservoir storage capacity due to sedimentation,and increases the danger of flooding and ***,this study uses geospatial modeling to produce soil erosion susceptibility maps(SESM)for the Hangu region,Khyber Pakhtunkhwa(KPK),*** Hangu region,located in the Kohat Plateau of KPK,Pakistan,is particularly susceptible to soil erosion due to its unique geomorphological and climatic ***,the Hangu region is characterized by a combination of steep slopes,variable rainfall patterns,diverse land use,and distinct soil types,all of which contribute to the complexity and severity of soil erosion *** factors necessitate a detailed and region-specific study to develop effective soil conservation *** this research,we detected and mapped 1013 soil erosion points and prepared 12 predisposing factors(elevation,aspect,slope,Normalized Differentiate Vegetation Index(NDVI),drainage network,curvature,Land Use Land Cover(LULC),rainfall,lithology,contour,soil texture,and road network)of soil erosion using gis ***,gis-based statistical models like the weight of evidence(WOE)and frequency ratio(FR)were applied to produce the SESM for the study *** SESM was reclassified into four classes,i.e.,low,medium,high,and very high *** results of WOE for SESM show that 16.39%,33.02%,29.27%,and 21.30%of areas are covered by low,medium,high,and very high zones,*** contrast,the FR results revealed that 16.50%,24.33%,35.55%,and 23.59%of the areas are occupied by low,medium,high,and very high ***,the reliability of applied models was evaluated using the Area Under Curve(AUC)*** validation results utilizing the area under curve showed that the success rate curve(SRC)and predicted rate curve(PRC)for WOE are 82%and 86%,respectively,while SRC and PRC for FR are 85%and 96%,res

Many glaciers and ice caps on the Tibetan Plateau have retreated and lost mass in recent years in response to temperature increases,providing clear evidence of the impact of climate change on the *** is increasing evidence that many of the glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau have also shown periodically dynamic behaviour in the form of glacier surging and some even catastrophic collapse *** this study,we examine the prevalence of glacier surging at the Geladandong ice caps,North East Tibetan Plateau,to better understand the role of surge events in the evolution of glacier mass loss *** glacier surface elevation change data over the period 1969—2018 and glacier surface velocity data from the ITS_LIVE dataset,we find that 19 outlet glaciers of the ice caps are of *** multi-temporal measurements of glacier mass balance show that surge-type glacier mass budgets vary depending on the portion of the surge-cycle captured by geodetic *** the regional level,pre-and post-surge glacier mass loss variability does not bias regional mass budget estimates,but enhanced,or suppressed,mass loss estimates are likely when small groups of glaciers are *** results emphasise the importance of accurate surge-type glacier inventories and the need to maximise geodetic data coverage over glacierised regions known to contain surge-type glaciers.

To date,there are very few studies about the spectroscopy of lithium-containing minerals(LCMs)in the scientific *** main objective of this study is to investigate the capability of Sentinel-2 image and FieldSpec3 spectro-radiometer in terms of mapping five important LCMs,including spodumene,lepidolite,amblygonite,petalite,and ***,first the FieldSpec3 spectro-radiometer was used to create the spectral curves of the ***,accurate spectral analysis and comparison of the studied LCMs were performed using The Spectral Geologist(TSG)and the Prism *** two software can show even slight difference in absorption features of different LCMs,which can discriminate and identify these ***-bearing rocks show absorption features at~365,~2200,and~2350 nm and reflective features at~550-770 *** features are consistent with Sentinel-2 ***,the created spectral curves were utilized for calibration of Sentinel-2 optical image to detect and map the potential zones of the rock units containing minerals mentioned above in a part of the central Iranian *** using the Spectral Angle Mapper(SAM)classifier module,the potential areas were *** of the five LCMs,petalite and spodumene showed more extensive coverage in the study *** speaking,the largest concentration of those LCMs can be seen in southern and centraleastern parts of the study *** comparison between spectral curves of reference and classified minerals confirmed the high capability of Sentinel-2 image for LCMs *** image classification results also confirmed the presence of the LCMs,but it cannot distinguish the LCMs type successfully.

The eruption of the novel Covid-19 has changed the socio-economic conditions of the *** escalating number of infections and deaths seriously threatened human health when it became a pandemic from an *** developed into an alarming situation when the World Health Organization(WHO)declared a health emergency in MARCH *** geographic settings and weather conditions are systematically linked to the spread of the *** concentration of population and weather attributes remains vital to study a pandemic such as *** current work aims to explore the relationship of the population,weather conditions(humidity and temperature)with the reported novel Covid-19 cases in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia(KSA).For the study,the data for the reported Covid-19 cases was secured from 11 March 2020,to 21 July 2020(132 days)from the 13 provinces of *** Governorate level data was used to estimate the population data.A Geographic information system(gis)analysis was utilised to visualise the *** results suggested that a significant correlation existed between the population and Covid-19 *** the weather conditions,the data for the 13 provinces of KSA for the same period was utilised to estimate the relationship between the weather conditions and Covid-19 ***’s rank correlation results confirmed that the humidity was significantly linked with the reported cases of Covid-19 in Makkah,Aseer,Najran,and Al Baha *** temperature had a significant relation with the reported Covid-19 cases in Al-Riyad,Makkah,Al-Madinah,Aseer,Najran,and *** inconsistency of the results highlighted the variant behavior of Covid-19 in different regions of the *** exploration is required beyond the weather-related *** for future research and policy direction are offered at the end of the study.

Mediterranean region is identified as a primary hot-spot for climate change due to the expected temperature and rainfall *** the potential impacts of climate change on the hydrology in these regions is an important task to develop long-term water management *** aim of this study was to quantify the potential impacts of the climate changes on local hydrological quantities at the Goksu Watershed at the Eastern Mediterranean,Turkey as a case study.A set of Representative Concentration Pathways(RCP)scenarios were used as drivers for the conceptual hydrological model J2000 to investigate how the hydrological system and the underlying processes would respond to projected future climate *** model was implemented to simulate daily hydrological quantities including runoff generation,Actual Evapotranspiration(AET)and soil-water balance for present(2005–2015)and future(up to 2100).The results indicated an increase of both precipitation and runoff throughout the region from January to *** region showed a strong seasonally dependent runoff regime with higher flows during winter and spring and lower flows in summer and *** study provides a comparative methodology to include meteorological-hydrological modelling integration that can be feasible to assess the climate change impacts in mountainous regions.
