Brewers' rice modulates oxidative stress in azoxymethanemediated colon carcinogenesis in rats

AIM: To investigate the mechanistic action of brewers' rice in regulating the Wnt/nuclear factor-kappa B(NF-κB)/Nrf2-signaling pathways during colon carcinogenesis in male Sprague-Dawley ***: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into the following five groups(six rats in each group):(G1) normal,(G2) azoxymethane(AOM) alone,(G3) AOM + 10%(weight(w)/weight(w)) brewers' rice,(G4) AOM + 20%(w/w) brewers' rice, and(G5) AOM + 40%(w/w) brewers' rice. They were intraperitoneally administered 15 mg/kg body weight of AOM in saline once weekly over a twoweek period and treated with an American Institute of Nutrition(AIN)-93 G diet containing 10%, 20%, and 40%(w/w) brewers' rice. The m RNA levels of glycogen synthase kinase 3β(GSK 3β), β-catenin, key inflammation markers, nuclear factor E2-related factor 2(Nrf2), and heme oxygenase-1(HO-1)-dependent transcriptional activity were assessed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analyses. The colon superoxide dismutase, malondialdehyde, and nitric oxide levels were also analyzed to assess the antioxidant effect of these treatments. The results were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA), and a P value of < 0.05 was considered ***: The overall analyses demonstrated that the dietary administration of brewers' rice in AOM-induced rat colon carcinogenesis resulted in the transcriptional upregulation of GSK 3β, inducible nitric oxide synthase(i NOS), Nrf2, and HO-1. We discovered that the dietary administration of brewers' rice downregulated the β-catenin and NF-κB m RNA levels. A significant reduction in β-catenin expression was found in the groups administered with 20%(0.611 ± 0.034) and 40%(0.436 ± 0.045)(w/w) brewers' rice compared with that of the group treated with AOM alone(1.000 ± 0.064)(P < 0.05). The NF-κB expression was significantly lower between the AOM-alone group(1.000 ± 0.048) and those groups fed with diets containing 10%(w/w) brewers' rice(0.255 ± 0.022), 20%

Kappaphycus alvarezii waste biomass:A potential biosorbent for chromium ions removal

The Cr（III） sorption experiments onto Kappaphycus alvarezii waste biomass were conducted at different pH values（2-6） under the conditions of initial metal concentration of 10-50 mg/L and the chemical compositions of Cr-Cu and *** Cr（III） sorption capacities were slightly dependent on pH,and the maximum sorption capacity was 0.86 mg/g at pH *** sorption capacities increased with increase in the initial metal concentration,whereas it was suppressed by the presence of Cu（II） and Cd（III） in the *** Cr（III） sorption equilibrium was evaluated using Langmuir,Freundlich and BET *** sorption mechanisms were characterised using scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared *** main mechanisms were ion exchange coupled with a complexation *** alvarezii waste biomass represents a potential for Cr（III） ion removal from aqueous solution.

Investigation of physico-chemical properties and microbial community during poultry manure co-composting process

Co-composting of poultry manure and rubber wood sawdust was performed with the ratio of 2：1（V/V） for a period of 60 days. An investigation was carried out to study the extracellular enzymatic activities and structural degradation utilizing Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy（FT-IR）, thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis（TG/DTA）and scanning electron microscopy（SEM）. The microbial succession was also determined by using denaturing gel gradient electrophoresis（DGGE）. The compost was able to reach its highest temperature of 71°C at day 3 and stabilized between 30 and 40°C for 8 ***, FPase and β-glucosidase acted synergistically in order to degrade the cellulosic substrate. The xylanase activities increased gradually during the composting and reached the peak value of 11.637 U/g on day 35, followed by a sharp decline. Both Li P and Mn P activities reached their peak values on day 35 with 0.431 and 0.132 U/g respectively. The FT-IR spectra revealed an increase in aromaticity and a decrease in aliphatic compounds such as carbohydrates as decomposition proceeded. TGA/DTG data exhibited significant changes in weight loss in compost samples, indicating degradation of organic matter. SEM micrographs showed higher amounts of parenchyma exposed on the surface of rubber wood sawdust at day 60, showing significant degradation. DGGE and 16 S r DNA analyses showed that Burkholderia sp., Pandoraea sp., and Pseudomonas sp. were present throughout the composting process. Ornithinibacillus sp. and Castellaniella ginsengisoli were only found in the initial stage of the composting, while different strains of Burkholderia sp. also occurred in the later stage of composting.

In 2008, the very extensive tropical peats were estimated to be about 182 million ha spanning South America, Asia and Africa. About 20.3%(36.9 million ha) of this area exist in Asia. Peats are classified based on their degree of decomposition, namely Fibrists, Hemists, Saprists and Folists. This makes them different in characteristics. The activities of microorganisms vary in different types of peat due to, for example, the sapric layer of well humified peat can provide water and food to microorganisms during heat stress. In another scenario, deeper peat is older and typically has lower levels of labile carbon to provide substrate for microbes compared to surface peat. A complete understanding of the microbial communities in different layers of peat is essential as microorganisms play major roles in peat decomposition and are important to ecosystem processes. These peats are a very important global carbon(C)store or reserve and could severely impact climate change if not managed well. Peatlands can store as much as 40 to 90 Gt C. Mis-management of peats could severely impact the environment particularly the emission of carbon into the atmosphere. For instance, clearing of peatlands using fire has been reported to release an estimated 88 t C ha^(-1) to the atmosphere. There are several factors which influence the environmental consequences of tropical peat especially in relation to climate change. The main influences are:(i) changes in temperature,(ii) changes in precipitation or rainfall,(iii) changes in atmospheric composition, and(iv) fire and haze. This paper is a brief review on these four influences in relation to climate change. It is apparent from the brief review that there is a need for continued short and long-term research to better understand tropical peats and how they affect our climate. This will hopefully provide the basis for predicting better what could happen under various scenarios.

Physicochemical characteristics,GABA content,antimicrobial and antioxidant capacities of yogurt from Murrah buffalo milk with different fat contents

This study aimed to prepare yogurt from Murrah buffalo milk with high GABA content and low fat content while keeping the physicochemical characteristics,antimicrobial effects,and antioxidant capacity within acceptable *** samples were prepared using buffalo milk by adjusting the fat content to 0.2%,3.5%,and 6.5%.The results showed that the fat content had no significant effects on the pH,titratable acidity,water activity,and cell ***,the fat content significantly affected the viscosity,particle size,and texture profile analysis of the *** GABA content was significantly higher in the 0.2%fat yogurt(61.57±3.22 mmol L^(-1))compared to the 3.5%fat yogurt(43.64±1.99 mmol L^(-1))and 6.5%fat yogurt(27.84±2.64 mmol L^(-1)).Glutamic acid and proline were the most abundant amino acids in the *** contrast,saturated fatty acids(butyric,lauric,myristic,palmitic,stearic,and oleic)and linoleic acid were *** with 3.5%fat showed significantly high antioxidant capacity and antimicrobial effects on *** O157 and Salmonella *** on the results,fat content significantly affects the rheological properties,GABA content,and antioxidant and antimicrobial capacities of *** the future,3.5%fat should be chosen as the optimized formula for large-scale yogurt production from Murrah buffalo milk.

Unsteady three-dimensional boundary layer flow due to a permeable shrinking sheet

The unsteady viscous flow over a continuously permeable shrinking surface is studied. Similarity equations are obtained through the application of similar transformation techniques. Numerical techniques are used to solve the similarity equations for different values of the unsteadiness parameter, the mass suction parameter, the shrinking parameter and the Prandtl number on the velocity and temperature profiles as well as the skin friction coefficient and the Nusselt number. It is found that, different from an unsteady stretching sheet, dual solutions exist in a certain range of mass suction and unsteadiness parameters.

Numerical solutions for cracks in an elastic half-plane

The behavior of the stress intensity factor at the tips of cracks subjected to uniaxial tension σχ^∞= p with traction-free boundary condition in half-plane elasticity is investigated. The problem is formulated into singular integral equations with the distribution dislocation function as unknown. In the formulation, we make used of a modified complex potential. Based on the appropriate quadrature formulas together with a suitable choice of collocation points, the singular integral equations are reduced to a system of linear equations for the unknown coefficients. Numerical examples show that the values of the stress intensity factor are influenced by the distance from the cracks to the boundary of the half-plane and the configuration of the cracks.
