Leveraging the metacoupling framework for sustainability science and global sustainable development

Sustainability science seeks to understand human-nature interactions behind sustainability challenges,but has largely been *** sustainability efforts often solved problems in one place at the cost of other places,compromising global *** metacoupling framework offers a conceptual foundation and a holistic approach to integrating human-nature interactions within a place,as well as between adjacent places and between distant places *** applications show broad utilities for advancing sustainability science with profound implications for global sustainable *** have revealed effects of metacoupling on the performance,synergies,and trade-offs of United Nations Sustainable D evelopment Goals(SDGs) across borders and across local to global scales;untangled complex interactions;identified new network attributes;unveiled spatio-temporal dynamics and effects of metacoupling;uncovered invisible feedbacks across metacoupled systems;expanded the nexus approach;detected and integrated hidden phenomena and overlooked issues;re-examined theories such as Tobler’ s First Law of Geography;and unfolded transformations among noncoupling,coupling,decoupling,and *** from the applications are also helpful to achieve SDGs across space,amplify benefits of ecosystem restoration across boundaries and across scales,augment transboundary management,broaden spatial planning,boost supply chains,empower small agents in the large world,and shift from place-based to flow-based *** topics for future research include cascading effects of an event in one place on other places both nearby and far *** the framework can benefit from further tracing flows across scales and space,uplifting the rigor of causal attribution,enlarging toolboxes,and elevating financial and human *** the full potential of the framework will generate more important scientific discoveries and more effective solutions

Pheromone 3kPZS evokes context-dependent serotonin sexual dimorphism in the brain of the sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus)

Mature male sea lampreys(Petromyzon marinus)release a sex pheromone,3-keto-petromyzonol sulfate(3kPZS),that induces sexually dimorphic behavioral responses in ***,the neural mechanism of such responses is mostly *** examined the neurotransmitter serotonin(5-hydroxytryptamine,5-HT)and the expression of 5-HT1A receptors in the forebrain and brainstem of sea lamprey exposed to the vehicle(0.91 ppm methanol)or 10−10 M 3kPZS for 2 h using high performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry,immunohistochemistry and real-time quantitative polymerase chain *** to 3kPZS for 2 h increased 5-HT concentration in the forebrain of adult females,whereas 5-HT was not detected in the forebrain of adult *** the contrary,3kPZS exposure decreased 5-HT concentration in the brainstem of adult females and had no effect in adult *** exposure evoked context-dependent sexual dimorphism in brain 5-HT1A receptor immunoreactivity,but had no effect on 5-HT1A mRNA concentrations in the brain with 2 h exposure *** appears that in sea lamprey pheromone 3kPZS affects the 5-HT system in the brain in a context-dependent,sexually dimorphic manner.

Expanding the phenotypic plasticity paradigm to broader views of trait space and ecological function

Foundational concepts of trait spaces, including phenotypic plasticity and function of traits, should be expanded and better integrated with ecological theory. This article addresses two areas where plasticity theory can become further integrated with ecological, evolutionary, and developmental thinking. First is the idea that not only trait means within environments and plasticity of trait means across environments is optimized by selection, but that the entire shape of phenotype distributions such as variance or skew should be optimized within and across environments. In order for trait distribution shape to evolve into adaptations, there must be a genetic basis for and selection upon variation in distribution shapes and their plasticities. I present published and new data demonstrating genetic control and selection for higher moments of phenotype distributions; though, plasticity in these values has not yet been tested. Genetic control of phenotype distribution moments is shown for Neurospora crassa ascospore size and shape. Selection on trait distribution moments is shown for Eurosta solidaginis gall size. Second, there is a tradition in modeling plasti- city as an adaptive strategy that pits it as an alternative to ecological specialization or generaliza- tion. However, these strategies need not be considered alternatives. Rather, with environmental fluctuation within generations plasticity may produce additive or non-additive intermediate （gener- alist） phenotypes, or something new altogether. I present published and new data on the snail Physa virgata and fish Gambusia affinis that show plasticity produces partly intermediate （general- ist） and partly unique phenotypic elements in mixed and fluctuating environments. Plasticity can thus be viewed in the context of a broader trait space and as having broader ecological roles than currently is conceived.

Environmental Implications of Excessive Selenium: A Review

Selenium is a naturally occurring trace element that is nutritionally required in smallamounts but it can become toxic at concentrations only twice those required. The narrow mar-gin between beneficial and harmful levels has important implications for human activities thatincrease the amount of selenium in the environment. Two of these activities, disposal of fbssilfuel wastes and agricultural irrigation of arid, seleniferous soils, have poisoned fish andwildlife, and threatened public health at several locations in the United States. Research stud-ies of these episodes have generated a data base that clearly illustrates the environmental hazardof excessive selenium. It is strongly bioaccumulated by aquatic organisms and even slight in-creases in waterborne concentrations can quickly result in toxic effects such as deformed em-bryos and reproductive failure in wildlife. The selenium data base has been very beneficial indeveloping hazard assessment procedures and establishing environmentally sound water qualitycriteria. The two faces of selenium, required nutrient and Potent toxin, make it a particularlyimportant trace element in the health of both animals and man. Because of this paradox, envi-ronmental selenium in relation to agriculture, fisheries, and wildlife wiIl continue to raise im-POrtant land and water management issues for decades to come. If these issues are dealt withusing prudence and the available environmental selenium data base, adverse irnpacts to naturalresources andspublic health can be avoided

The Influence of Seasonal Changes and Headwaters on Physico-chemical Dynamics of Temengor Reservoir, Malaysia

A study on physico-chemical dynamics of Temengor Reservoir was conducted to determine whether headwaters and seasonal changes play a major role in regulating physico-chemical dynamics of Temengor Reservoir. Temengor Reservoir receives water from its surrounding water catchments and headwaters. Then, the water flows into a series of hydroelectric dams, namely the Bersia, Kenering and Chenderoh dams. Generally, water quality in Temengor Reservoir can be classified as Class I. Physico-chemical trends showed that water quality in euphotic zone of Temengor Reservoir is stable and consistent. Two-way ANOVA analyses showed that seasonal variations only affected water temperature, Secchi disc's depth and nitrate-nitrogen. Based on Tukey's post-hoc test, all three headwaters in this study exert no influence to the reservoir's water quality. These insignificant differences were probably due to water temperature and the size of the headwaters and the reservoir itself. In situ parameters profiling showed that the epilimnion zone in Temengor Reservoir is from the surface to 6 m depth, the metalimnion zone is from 6 m to 12 m depth and the hypolimnion zone is from 12 m depth onwards to the bottom of the reservoir. Thus, continuous water profiling monitoring that covers high and low water levels need to be conducted to determine characteristics of the physico-chemical dynamics in the water column and also to analyse changes in reservoir layers. Through these studies, discontinuity trends in the Perak River could be determined and suggestions to the respective agencies could be made to conserve and to sustain downstream biodiversity.

Effects of rodent abundance and richness on cache pilfering

Scatterhoarding is a common behavioral strategy to conserve food during periods of scarcity,but this type of food storage is vulnerable to theft or pilferage.A variety of environmental factors and cache characteristics influence the rate of *** we investigate 2 environmental factors,which heretofore have not received much attention:the abundance and species richness of scatterhoarding animals in the vicinity of scatterhoarded *** measured the rate of cache pilferage at 7 sites that differed in the number and species composition of granivorous rodents in western Nevada using local native seeds and sunflower *** found that there was no difference between the pilferage rate of native seeds and sunflower seeds,but that sites with different rodent abundances had different pilferage *** rates were proportional to the abundance of scatterhoarding *** rodents removed seeds at the rate of 1.3%/day/rodent *** richness of scatterhoarding rodents was not correlated with rates of *** results suggest that density-dependent competition for scatterhoarded seeds is a strong determinant of pilferage rates.

Investigation of genome structure of a cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase locus in a basal angiosperm hardwood species, Liriodendron tulipifera L., reveals low synteny

Basal angiosperms contain a wide diversity of floral and growth forms and gave rise to the largest recent angiosperm *** none of the basal angiosperm genomes has been sequenced,examining large bacterial artificial chromosome(BAC) inserts remains the main approach to providing a first glimpse of the structure and organization of their *** this study,we sequenced a 126.9-kbp BAC contig harboring a cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase gene(LtuCAD1) in a basal angiosperm species,Liriodendron tulipifera L.,an important timber tree species with significant ecological and economic values.A key enzyme in lignin biosynthesis,CAD catalyzes the final step in the synthesis of *** carried out phylogenetic analyses of seven full-length CAD family genes(LtuCAD1-7) obtained from a comprehensive Liriodendron expressed sequence tag *** phylogenetic tree suggests that LtuCAD1 is the primary CAD gene involved in lignifications as it is the only Liriodendron CAD grouped with the bona fide CADs *** well as the LtuCAD1,the BAC contig contained fragmented sequences for one integrase,eight hypothetical proteins,two gag-pol polyproteins,one RNase H family protein,and one chromatin binding *** analysis with other angiosperm species suggests that the genomic segment in this BAC has undergone frequent *** study is our initial step in identifying and understanding lignin biosynthesis genes from basal angiosperm *** knowledge can help bridge the information gap between hardwood(angiosperm) and softwood(gymnosperm) species and benefit potential breeding and biotechnology application for enhanced production of biomass and digestibility in ***.

Broader applicability of the metacoupling framework than Tobler’s first law of geography for global sustainability:A systematic review

Complex sustainability issues in the Anthropocene,with rapid globalization and global environmental changes,are increasingly interlinked between not only nearby systems but also distant ***’s first law of geog-raphy(TFL)states“near things are more related than distant things”.Evidence suggests that TFL is not infallible for sustainability ***,the integrated framework of metacoupling(MCF;human-nature interactions within as well as between adjacent and distant systems)has been applied to analyze the interactions between nearby and distant coupled human and natural systems ***,previous work has been scat-tered and *** is crucial to understand the extent to which TFL and MCF apply across pressing issues in ***,we reviewed and synthesized sustainability literature that used TFL and MCF across seven major topics:land change,species migration,tourism,trade,agricultural development,conservation,and *** indicate MCF had a much broader applicability than TFL for these *** literature using MCF generally did not or likely did not obey TFL,especially in trade,governance,and agricultural *** the TFL literature,most topics obeyed TFL,except for species migration and *** findings suggest the need to rethink and further test TFL’s relevance to sustainability issues,and highlight the potential of MCF to address complex interactions between both adjacent and distant systems across the world for global sustainability.

Assessing feeding competition between lake whitefish Coregonus clupeaformis and round whitefish Prosopium cylindraceum

We collected lake whitefish Coregonus clupeaformis and round whitefish Prosopium cylindraceum from the main basin of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay in the Laurentian Great Lakes of North America to investigate details of diet and feeding tactics of these species in different seasons. Lake whitefish supports important commercial fisheries in Lake Huron and both species make use of habitats near the Bruce Nuclear Power Development, on the eastern shore of Lake Huron. Most fish of both species showed generalist feeding behavior, but some lake whitefish appeared to show specialist prey selection. The invasive spiny water flea Bythotrephes longimanus was an important component of the diet of both species. There was considerable dietary overlap between the whitefish species, but the ecological implications of these dietary overlaps are mitigated by the fact that dominant prey species differed in most seasons. We conclude that the potential for ecologically significant interactions between lake whitefish and round whitefish resulting from competition for similar benthic food resources in the main basin of Lake Huron is probably low [Current Zoology 56 （1）： 109-117, 2010].

Fuel and vegetation changes in southwestern, unburned portions of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, USA, 2003-2019

Overstory basal area,ericaceous shrub cover(Kalmia latifolia *** Rhododendron maximum L.),and fuels(i.e.,woody fuel loads and depths and O Horizon thickness) were assessed within Great Smoky Mountains National Park,USA,in *** to recent wildfire activity within the southern Appalachian Mountain region(including Great Smoky Mountains National Park),the potential spread and expansion of ericaceous shrubs,and the impacts of the hemlock woolly adelgid(Adelges tsugae Annand) on eastern hemlock(Tsuga canadensis(L.) Carrière),these same ecosystem components were again assessed in *** and moisture regime(xeric,intermediate,and mesic) were included in this assessment as potential influential *** evaluation of repeated measurements from 40 plots suggested that O Horizon thickness did not change significantly over the 16-year period,but increased as elevation increased,and moisture regime(xeric O Horizon thickness> mesic O Horizon thickness) was a significant,related *** sum of 1-,10-,and 100-h fuel loads(fuels less 7.6 cm diameter),total woody fuel loads,ericaceous shrub cover,total basal area,or live *** basal area were *** *** basal area decreased with increasing ***,standing *** basal area increased from 2003-2019,and that increase was most pronounced as elevation increased on xeric and intermediate ***,we found that:*** increases in total woody fuel loads and ericaceous shrub cover were not present;and *** and moisture regime were most related to observed changes in vegetation and fuel condition.
