The indispensability of information in agricultural development led to the setting up of Farmers’Information and Advice Centres(FIACs)by the government of Bangladesh all over the *** FIACs mainly provide information related to different agriculture subsectors like crop,fisheries and livestock with the overall aim of improving farmers’***,the effectiveness along with problems and suggestions for improvement of the FIACs’services were examined in this study by surveying two FIACs of Dinajpur sadar *** effectiveness of FIAC was determined on some selected farm(crop,fisheries and livestock)information based on three dimensions *** received,its understanding and *** were collected using interview schedule from a sample of 96 farmers selected by proportionate random sampling *** statistics and Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient(r)were used in the *** terms of crop production sub-sector,all the respondents(100%)received,understood and applied‘tomato seed production technology’information,followed by‘rice seed production and preservation technology’(96.9%).Also,as for the livestock sub-sector,all the respondents(100%)received,understood and applied‘beef fattening through UMS method’information,followed by‘livestock rearing’(89.5%).Similarly,in case of fisheries sub-sector,all the respondents(100%)receive,understand and apply‘Pangas(Pangasius pangasius)culture method’information,followed by‘preparation of an ideal pond’(92.3%).In essence,the FIACs are quiet effective in their service *** the seven selected characteristics of the respondents,educational qualification,family income and perception on the service delivery efficiency of FIACs showed positive significant association with the effectiveness of the ***,the foremost problems mentioned by the respondents were FIACs staff inefficiency(83.33%)and lack of effective long term training program for both farmers and

Sugar cane is a principal agricultural product in Egypt. Over 48% of its area is grown in Qena governorate. The agricultural extension system should identify problems and needs for farmers and provide them with their solutions. The main objective of this paper was to know production and marketing problems for sugar cane growers in Qena govemorate, Egypt. Six focus groups were organized for farmers in two villages and a survey was conducted on 224 extension personnel or 93 % of all extension personnel at districts and villages levels in Qena govemorate to collect necessary data. The most important perceived production problems were： spread of weeds and insects, weak role of agricultural extension, shortage and high costs of fertilizers and labor, and high costs of production, insecticides and irrigation. The most important perceived marketing problems were： high costs and unsystematic cutting, shortage and high costs of transportation, delay of cutting and delivery of product to the factory, inaccurate weigh and low prices of the product. A great role lies on the agricultural extension system to identify such problems and provide farmers with their solutions in order to increase the agricultural productivity of this crop in Qena govemorate.

To understand the technology generating practices among universities and research institutes in north central zone of Nigeria,this study examined sources of funds for technology generating activities,compared agro-technology generating practices and identified constraining factors hindering technology generating *** hundred and fifty-two academic staff were randomly selected from universities and one hundred and thirty-six respondents were drawn from research *** questionnaires with reliability coefficient of r=0.92 were used to elicit *** were analyzed using descriptive statistics,Likert-scale,T-test and Factor ***(93.4%)of universities’respondents used their personal funds to generate new technology compared to their counterparts in research *** most widely employed mechanism for generating agricultural technologies was joint radio programmes(mean=3.38)while the least was biotechnology(mean=2.57).Major areas of differences in technology generation between the two institutions were the physical distance(t=13.54;P<0.05),farmers participation in field research trials(t=8.50;P<0.05),farmers co-finance of adaptive research trials(t=3.77;P<0.05)and adequate research facilities and incentives to workers(t=2.05;P<0.05).Factors constraining technology generation for universities were poor access to knowledge and information on new innovation(r=0.815)while for research institutes it was limited physical resources(ICT,Telephone)(r=0.801).It was recommended therefore that respondents should look into options of writing alternate fund proposals and submitting to a wider range of funding *** of innovation could be strengthened through the formation of a formal technological linkage advisory council.

Wetlands have immense poverty-fighting potentials and in Nigeria, more and more people are dependent on wetlands for their livelihoods. To examine the social factors affecting the current status of the wetlands utilization for agriculture in Nigeda, a simple random sampling technique was used to select 200 farmers cultivating wetlands and a structured questionnaire was applied to elicit the information on the social factors. Data collected were described using frequency and percentage and a multiple regression analysis was used to identify significant variables that are determinants of wetland utilization. The results of the analysis showed that significant variables included crop preferences, farming system, culture, taste, land tenure, knowledge of wetland cultivation, perceived suitability, farmers＇ tribe, location of wetland, and farmers＇ age. it was concluded with suggestions for the right combination of policies, public awareness, and appropriate farming methods in order to improve wetland utilization in Nigeria.

This study sought to examine the utility of termites to rural households in depressed regions of Bikita,*** and its spread of European culture had viewed entomophagy with contempt resulting in reduced utilization and consumption of termites in most *** our quest to understand how people in depressed regions utilized termites,both quantitative and qualitative methodologies were *** and in-depth interviews were used to gather data during field *** and snowball sampling techniques were used in recruiting *** and content analysis were used in data presentation and *** revealed that dampwood and drywood termites are climatic indicators for the rural communal farmers,a low-cost technology in weather *** and mold builders provide manure,relish,and are medicinal in *** are traded for income generation,and as for the poor,harvesting,processing,storage,and marketing is cost *** considered nostalgic foods,most respondents highlighted that selling termites complimented other off-farm livelihood *** consumption and utilization provide a sustainable way for livelihood diversification in depressed regions and has partly addressed problems of food insecurity.

Factors influencing adoption of soil and water conservation practices in the northwest Ethiopian highlands

Soil erosion has long been a problem in the Ethiopian highlands in general and Dembecha district in particular. The objective of this study was to identify factors influencing adoption of soil and water conservation practices. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected from primary and sec-ondary sources. The primary data were collected from respondent samples and key informants through interview and personal observation. The secondary data were collected from sources such as books, journals, statistical reports and official documents. A multistage sampling technique was applied to select sample households. Sample sizes of 150 households were selected using simple random sampling. Both descriptive statistics and a multivariate probit econometric model were employed to analyze the data. The model results revealed that the likelihood of decisions to adopt soil bund, stone bund, check dam and strip cropping were 74, 56, 29 and 56%respectively. The joint probability of adopting the selected soil and water conservation practices was 14.2%. The model results also confirmed that age, sex, education level, household size, livestock holding, land size, access to credit, access to extension service and training were significant factors that affected the adoption of soil and water conservation practices in the study area. Based on our findings, the study suggests that the government and stakeholders should focus on strengthening the provision of formal and non-formal training and facilitate an effective extension service.

This paper examines the historical evolution of crop-livestock integration in China with a specific focus on its role in mitigating non-point source *** examination of existing literature has unearthed the roots of croplivestock integration dating back to the Western Zhou Dynasty(1046 to 771BCE), ultimately culminating in a multifaceted and intricately interwoven system of rural development policies seen in contemporary China. This paper identifies and characterizes four distinct stages in the historical trajectory of crop-livestock integration: the era of self-sufficient subsistence production in traditional times(1046 BCE to 1948);the period where crop-livestock integration emerged as a pivotal strategy for augmenting grain and meat production under collectivist policies(1949-1977);the phase marked by the industrialization and expansion of the livestock sector during the early years of economic reforms(1978-2011);and the present era in which crop-livestock integration is harnessed as a mechanism for pollution control and ecological preservation in contemporary China(2012 to present). This paper illuminates the diverse contributions of crop-livestock integration in different epochs of rural development within China, which contributes to a nuanced and more theoretically grounded comprehension of circular agriculture. This understanding has the potential to be leveraged to promote sustainable rural development in broader contexts.

rural panel surveys are the most appropriate source of data for studying the unprecedented rapid migration and urbanization currently taking place in China and other developing countries. This paper provides a selective review, focusing on the panel survey methodologies of several studies, which are organized based on our proposed four key elements of panel surveys: representativeness, retrospect-prospect, multilevel tracking, and temporality. To maximize heterogeneity in urbanization and development over the last three decades, we select rural panel surveys from five Asian countries: India, Indonesia, Nepal, Thailand, and China. We analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the selected panel surveys to provide directions for designing future rural panel surveys in China and elsewhere in the developing world.

This study aimed to determine the sustainability criteria of the beekeeping industry in Iran,which was performed using three-stage classical Delphi *** participants were 32 experts in beekeeping industry who were purposefully selected using the snowball sampling *** criteria identified,after three Delphi stages,consisted of 70 items,which were categorized into 13 general criteria and into four economic,environmental,social,and institutional *** general criteria were presented in the form of a conceptual model,including:farmers’environmental behavior quality,beekeepers'environmental behavior quality,the quality of marketing and sales of beekeeping productions,productivity and performance improvement,amount of monetization from pollinations'right,the amount of monetization of byproducts and value added,employment rate and job stability,the level of social development of stakeholders,the quality of the role-playing of non-governmental stakeholders,the quality of extension and education new sciences and technologies to stakeholders,comprehensiveness of laws and programs,quality of role-playing of stakeholder non-governmental organizations,and the quality of the roleplaying of governmental institutions *** them,a comprehensive perception of the necessary criteria for the sustainability of Iran's beekeeping industry can be obtained and a comprehensive program can be designed for its implementation.
