No trade-off between trichome production and tolerance to leaf and inflorescence damage in a natural population of Arabidopsis lyrata

Aims Early models of plant defense conceived resistance and tolerance to herbivore damage as mutually exclusive *** for this idea has been equivocal and studies on these two strategies are still needed to understand the evolution of defenses in natural *** Arabidopsis lyrata,the production of trichomes,a documented resistance trait,has been associated with a fitness cost in the absence of *** examined whether trichome production is also associated with reduced tolerance to simulated herbivore *** We conducted a field experiment in a natural swedish population of *** where we inflicted leaf(0 vs.50%of the area of each leaf removed)and inflorescence damage(0 vs.50%of inflores-cences removed)to trichome-producing and glabrous plants in a factorial *** examined the response(survival,growth and reproduction)of the plants to the imposed damage over 2 *** Findingstrichome-producing plants were not less tolerant than glabrous plants to simulated herbivore damage(no significant morph×leaf damage or morph×inflorescence damage interactions).Inflorescence and leaf damage had independent negative effects on the performance of damaged *** damage reduced rosette size the year of damage,but effects on reproductive output in the year of damage,and on survival and reproductive performance the following year were weak and not statistically *** damage significantly reduced the number of flowers,fruits and seeds the year of damage,but not in the following *** of morph,the study population was more tolerant to leaf than to inflorescence *** results indicated no trade-off between trichome production and tolerance,suggesting that these two defense mechanisms have the potential to evolve indepen-dently in this *** population.

Background: The Plain-backed Thrush Zoothera mollissima breeds in the Himalayas and mountains of central China. It was long considered conspecific with the Long-tailed Thrush Zoothera dixoni, until these were shown to be broadly ***: We revise the Z. mollissima–Z. dixoni complex by integrating morphological, acoustic, genetic(two mitochondrial and two nuclear markers), ecological and distributional ***: In earlier field observations, we noted two very different song types of "Plain-backed" Thrush segregated by breeding habitat and elevation. Further integrative analyses congruently identify three groups: an alpine breeder in the Himalayas and Sichuan, China("Alpine Thrush"); a forest breeder in the eastern Himalayas and northwest Yunnan(at least), China("Himalayan Forest Thrush"); and a forest breeder in central Sichuan("Sichuan Forest Thrush"). Alpine and Himalayan Forest Thrushes are broadly sympatric, but segregated by habitat and altitude, and the same is probably true also for Alpine and Sichuan Forest Thrushes. These three groups differ markedly in morphology and songs. In addition, DNA sequence data from three non-breeding specimens from Yunnan indicate that yet another lineage exists("Yunnan Thrush"). However, we find no consistent morphological differences from Alpine Thrush, and its breeding range is unknown. Molecular phylogenetic analyses suggest that all four groups diverged at least a few million years ago, and identify Alpine Thrush and the putative "Yunnan Thrush" as sisters, and the two forest taxa as sisters. Cytochrome b divergences among the four Z. mollissima sensu lato(s.l.) clades are similar to those between any of them and Z. dixoni, and exceed that between the two congeneric outgroup species. We lectotypify the name Oreocincla rostrata Hodgson, 1845 with the Z. mollissima sensu stricto(s.s.) specimen long considered its type. A Juvenile Specimen of Sauropodomorpha from the Lower Jurassic of China and a Brief Review of the Lufeng Sauropodomorph Fauna

An incomplete dinosaur skeleton,including a partial skull,recently discovered from the Lower Jurassic Lufeng Formation of Yunnan,China,is here *** from its small size,little anatomical evidence supports,a priori,the non-adult status of this new sauropodomorph specimen but osteohistological analyses suggest that it is a fast-growing *** specimen represents only the second occurrence of a juvenile non-sauropodan sauropodomorph in the Lufeng *** anatomy of the new specimen does not match that of other Lower Jurassic immature specimens;although cranial material is preserved,it does not display the diagnostic characters of early sauropodomorphs from the same horizon,namely Lufengosaurus,Yizhousaurus and *** phylogenetic analysis places the new specimen in a position relatively distant from other Chinese sauropodomorphs,and corroborates the anatomical evidence showing it is not referable to any known species already excavated in *** result is interpreted with caution considering that ontogeny affects phylogenetic reconstruction.A thorough comparison with adult forms,taking into account ontogenyrelated characters,suggests that this Lufeng juvenile might represent a previously unknown species of early sauropodomorph.

Diversity of dictyostelid social amoebae in high latitude habitats of Northern Sweden

The dictyostelid social amoebae(Dictyostelia)occur in terrestrial habitats *** has been observed previously that their diversity decreases with increasing latitude and *** we look at dictyostelid diversity in the high latitude habitats of Northern *** were recovered from soil samples using traditional plating methods and then identified using morphological characters and molecular sequence(small subunit ribosomal RNA)*** total,nine species were recovered,including two new species,described herein as Dictyostelium barbibulus and Polysphondylium *** species diversity found here is discussed in relation to previous findings in the area as well as other high-latitude studies,and biogeographical patterns are *** total number of species found in Northern Sweden is lower than the numbers recorded for regions further south in Europe,a finding consistent with a latitudinal gradient of species *** findings highlight the benefit of using molecular data for accurate species identification in Dictyostelia and the need for a continued sampling effort to better understand their diversity and distribution,especially in high latitude habitats.

This study intended to find data on obligate ectoparasitic Laboulbeniales(Fungi,Ascomycota)on Chinese Harmonia axyridis(Coleoptera,Coccinellidae).After having screened over four thousand dried specimens of *** and close relatives,we present the first(historical)record of Chinese *** infected with Hesperomyces *** suggest that *** is a historically globally distributed species and hypothesize that(native)infection was lost when *** was introduced in North America.

Penis size and sperm quality,are all bats grey in the dark?

Penises play a key role in sperm transport and in stimulating female *** should impact post-copulatory competition,and expose penis characteristics to sexual selective *** of male genitalia have repeatedly reported negative static allometries,which mean that,within species,large males have disproportionally small genitals when compared with smaller *** of some sperm-storing bat species may stand as an exception to such a pattern by arousing from hibernation to copulate with torpid *** selection for large penises might take place,if a long organ provides advantages during post-copulatory competition and/or if females have evolved mechanisms allowing the choice of sire,relying on characters other than pre-copulatory traits(e.g.,penis size).In this study,we measured dimensions of the erected penis in 4 sperm-storing bat ***,we collected sperm and evaluated the link between penis dimensions and sperm *** results revealed steep allometric slopes of the erected penis length in Barbastella barbastellus and an inverse allometry of penis head width in Myotis *** detailed studies of copulatory behavior are urgently needed to explain the range of observed scaling ***,penis head width correlates with sperm velocity in Plecotus *** this last species,we propose that penis shape might act as a marker of male fertility.

Living on the edge: morphological and behavioral adaptations to a marginal high-elevation habitat in an arboreal mammal

Habitats are characterized by different local environmental conditions that inﬂuence both behavior and morphology of species,which can result in habitat-dependent phenotypic differences among animals living in heterogeneous *** studied 3 alpine populations of Eurasian red squirrels(Sciurus vulgaris),1 living in a marginal high-elevation habitat at the edge of the species’altitudinal distribution,and 2 occurring in higher-quality ***,we investigated whether squirrels living in the marginal area differed in 2 morphological parameters(body size and body mass)and/or in the expression of 4 personality traits estimated with an openﬁeld test and a mirror image stimulation test(activity,exploration,activity-exploration,and social tendency).Furthermore,we tested whether within-individual variance of the traits(behavioral plasticity)was higher in the edge *** squirrels in the edge habitat were smaller and weighed less than in the other study areas,while among females,size–habitat relationships were less *** sex-speciﬁc patterns were explained by a strong association between body mass and reproductive success in female *** in the marginal habitat were more active,explorative,and had a more social personality than in the other ***,in contrast to our predictions,behavioral plasticity was smaller in the marginal habitat,but only for the trait *** results suggest that animals choose the habitat that bestﬁts their personality,and that habitat-related differences in selective pressures may shape animals’morphology.

Specific detection of the floodwater mosquitoes Aedes sticticus and Aedes vexans DNA in predatory diving beetles

Floodwater mosquitoes （Diptera： Culicidae） are associated with periodically flooded wet meadows, marshes, and swamps in floodplains of major rivers worldwide, and their larvae are abundant in the shallow parts of flooded areas. The nuisance caused by the blood-seeking adult female mosquitoes motivates mosquito control. Larviciding with Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis is considered the most environmentally safe method. However, some concern has been raised whether aquatic predatory insects could be indi- rectly affected by this reduction in a potential vital prey. Top predators in the temporary wetlands in the River Dal/ilven floodplains are diving beetles （Coleoptera： Dytiscidae）, and Aedes sticticus andAe, vexans are the target species for mosquito control. For detailed stud- ies on this aquatic predator-prey system, we developed a polymerase chain reaction （PCR） assay for detection of mosquito DNA in the guts of medinm-sized diving beetles. Primers were designed for amplifying short mitochondrial DNA fragments of the cytochrome C oxidase subunit I （COI） gene in Ae. sticticus and Ae. vexans, respectively. Primer speci- ficity was confirmed and half-life detectability ofAe. sticticus DNA in diving beetle guts was derived from a feeding and digestion experiment. The Ae. sticticus DNA within diving beetle guts was detected up to 12 h postfeeding, and half-life detectability was estimated to 5.6 h. In addition, field caught diving beetles were screened for Ae. sticticus and Ae. vexans DNA and in 14% of the diving beetles one or both mosquito species were detected, showing that these mosquito species are utilized as food by the diving beetles.

Male Drosophila melanogaster learn to prefer an arbitrary trait associated with female mating status

Although males are generally less discriminating than females when it comes to choosing a mate, they still benefit from distinguishing between mates that are receptive to courtship and those that are not, in order to avoid wasting time and ener- gy. It is known that males of Drosophila melanogaster are able to learn to associate olfactory and gustatory cues with female re- ceptivity, but the role of more arbitrary, visual cues in mate choice learning has been overlooked to date in this species. We there- fore carried out a series of experiments to determine： 1） whether males had a baseline preference for female eye color （red versus brown）, 2） if males could learn to associate an eye color cue with female receptivity, and 3） whether this association disappeared when the males were unable to use this visual cue in the dark. We found that naive males had no baseline preference for females of either eye color, but that males which were trained with sexually receptive females of a given eye color showed a preference for that color during a standard binary choice experiment. The learned cue was indeed likely to be truly visual, since the prefe- rence disappeared when the binary choice phase of the experiment was carried out in *** is, to our knowledge l） the first evidence that male D. melanogaster can use more arbitrary cues and 2） the first evidence that males use visual cues during mate choice learning. Our findings suggest that that D. melanogaster has untapped potential as a model system for mate choice learning.
