Response surface method for modeling the removal of carbon dioxide from a simulated gas using water absorption enhanced with a liquid-film-forming device

This paper presents the results from using a physical absorption process to absorb gaseous CO2mixed with N2using water by producing tiny bubbles via a liquid-film-forming device（LFFD）that improves the solubility of CO2in *** influence of various parameters—pressure,initial CO2concentration,gas-to-liquid ratios,and temperature—on the CO2removal efficiency and its absorption rate in water were investigated and estimated thoroughly by statistical polynomial models obtained by the utilization of the response surface method（RSM）with a central composite design（CCD）.Based on the analysis,a high efficiency of CO2capture can be reached in conditions such as low pressure,high CO2concentration at the inlet,low gas/liquid ratio,and low *** instance,the highest removal efficiency in the RSM–CCD experimental matrix of nearly 80%occurred for run number 20,which was conducted at 0.30 MPa,CO2concentration of 35%,gas/liquid ratio of 0.71,and temperature of 15℃.Furthermore,the coefficients of determination,R^2,were 0.996 for the removal rate and 0.982 for the absorption rate,implying that the predicted values computed by the constructed models correlate strongly and fit well with the experimental *** results obtained provide essential information for implementing this method properly and effectively and contribute a promising approach to the problem of CO2capture in air pollution treatment.

Application of a littoral Baltic Sea resuspension model in a eutrophic lake-factors behind differences in the model performance

The performance of a linear resuspension model developed in the Baltic Sea was studied in the conditions of a eutrophic Lake Kirkkoj(a|¨)rvi(southern Finland).The model predicts sediment resuspension rate using data on vegetation cover,wind and sediment quality as an *** the original model coefficients were used,the model resulted on average 1.8 fold overestimation of the resuspension rate in Kirkkoj(a|¨)*** was due to lower fetch and water depth,and less consolidated sediment of Kirkkoj(a|¨)rvi compared with the Baltic Sea study *** coefficients were adjusted for Kirkkoj(a|¨)rvi,the model predictions were 1.1 times the measured *** to the continuous resuspension,the effect of the wind term in the model was so low that it could be excluded without affecting the accuracy of model *** study demonstrated that in a shallow eutrophic lake accurate predictions on resuspension rate can be made using only data on sediment quality and on factors inhibiting resuspension(macrophytes).The model residuals increased with increasing resuspension rate and high rates of resuspension were underestimated by the *** to the fluffy sediment in Kirkkoj(a|¨)rvi,erosion of sediment increases more than linear with increasing shear *** in such conditions,even better predictions could be achieved by a non-linear resuspension model.

Flood Resilience Building in Thailand: Assessing Progress and the Effect of Leadership

Disaster risk reduction has become a global strategy for making cities more resilient since the establishment of the Hyogo Framework for Action in 2005. The question that still challenges emergency management scholars and professionals, however, is what contributes to the progress of resilience building. Previous literature suggests that disaster resilience can be attributable to multiple factors, including leadership. But the specific abilities that help leaders promote resilience have not yet been examined empirically. To address this problem, using the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction 10 Essentials for Making Cities Resilient as guidelines, we assessed the progress of flood resilience building in Thailand and its relationship to local government leaders' abilities. Our research showed that, since the flood disaster in 2011, municipalities in Thailand have made moderate progress in flood resilience building. The results of a multiple regression analysis revealed that disaster resilience leadership abilities have had a statistically significant, positive effect on the progress of flood resilience building. Our findings underscore the role of leadership in making cities more resilient and shed light on how local government leaders can contribute to the progress ofdisaster risk reduction. We also outline the academic implications and practical contributions of our research.

CONSTRUCTION OF CONTINUOUS TIME MARKOVIAN ARRIVAL PROCESSES

Markovian arrival processes were introduced by Neuts in 1979 （Neuts 1979） and have been used extensively in the stochastic modeling of queueing, inventory, reliability, risk, and telecommunications systems. In this paper, we introduce a constructive approach to define continuous time Markovian arrival processes. The construction is based on Poisson processes, and is simple and intuitive. Such a construction makes it easy to interpret the parameters of Markovian arrival processes. The construction also makes it possible to establish rigorously basic equations, such as Kolmogorov differential equations, for Markovian arrival processes, using only elementary properties of exponential distributions and Poisson processes. In addition, the approach can be used to construct continuous time Markov chains with a finite number of states

This paper considers the effect of an erroneous inclusion of regressors on the risk propertiesof the Stein-rule,positive-part Stein-rule and inequality restricted and pre-test estimators in a linearregression *** two Stein-rule estimators are considered when extraneous information is availablein the form of a set of multiple equality constraints on the coefficients,while the inequality estimatorsare considered under the case of a single inequality *** is shown that the inclusion ofwrong regressors has only minimal effect on the properties of the Stein-rule and positive-part Stein-ruleestimators,and no effect at all on the inequality restricted and pre-test estimators when there is asingle inequality constraint.

Catalytic combustion of diesel soot over K_2NiF_4-type oxides La_(2-x)K_xCuO_4

Nanostructure K2NiF4 type oxides La2-xKxCuO4 complex oxides were prepared using the Sol-Gel method, characterized by X-Ray Diffraction （XRD）, Fourier Transform Infrared （FT-IR）, and Scanning Electron Microscopy （SEM）. The catalytic activity for soot combustion was evaluated by the Temperature-Programmed Reaction （TPO） technique. The results demonstrated that the substitution quality of K^＋ for La^3＋ at the A-site would increase the catalytic activities of La2-xKxCuO4 for soot combustion greatly; the substitution quality affected the structure and catalytic activity obviously. The La1.8K0.2CuO4 complex oxides with tetrahedral structures had the best catalytic activity for soot combustion, and the ignition temperature of soot combustion was lowered from 490 to 320 ℃.

Characterization of mean stem density,fibre length and lignin from two Acacia species and their hybrid

The objective of this study was to compare the wood properties related to wood pulp quality of two widely planted Acacia species *** mangium *** Acacia auriculiformis *** *** their *** insoluble lignin content(Klason),mean stem density and fibre length differed considerably among the species and *** possessed a high percent of lignin content compared to *** and the Acacia ***,mean stem density of *** was higher than *** and the *** length of heartwood tissues was generally shorter than that of sapwood *** hybrid had longer fibres than the parent *** was negatively correlated with mean stem ***,the wood properties of the hybrid were superior to its parent *** significant intraspecific variation observed for wood properties of Acacia species could be used in breeding superior hybrids combining desirable traits of the two *** thedifficulty involved in accurately measuring the lignin content compared to mean stem density,selection for plants with low lignin content can be achieved by indirect selection of high mean stem density.

The effect of ozone and drought on the photosynthetic performance of canola

Canola plants were fumigated in open-top chambers with ozone（O3）（120 ppb）under well-watered（WW）and water-stressed（WS）conditions for 4 ***-fumigated plants were also studied to facilitate comparison between treatments for the same week and over ***,the treatments were：WW,WW-O3,WS and *** fast chlorophyll a fluorescence transients OJIP for the four treatments emitted upon illumination of dark-adapted leaves were measured after week 1,2,3,4 and analysed by the JIP-test to evaluate the resulting changes in photosynthetic *** fumigation led to a decline of total performance index（PI（total））in well-watered *** effect of O3 was minor under drought conditions,as revealed by a decrease of PI（total） by 3%.The PI（total） decreased as the treatment was prolonged,due to leaf ageing for all cases and the decline was more pronounced under *** the average of all weeks,WW had the highest PI（total)and the lowest WW-O3（decrease by 27%）,while in WS and WS-O3,it was lower than WW（14 and 17%,respectively）.We found that the absorption（ABS）/reaction centre（RC）increases,while the maximum quantum yield of primary photochemistry（φ（Po））undergoes slight changes,and trapping（TR0）/RC closely followed the increase in ABS/*** indicates that O3and drought caused an increase in the functional antenna *** maximum quantum yield of primary photochemistry showed slight differences for all treatments and over time,suggesting that this parameter is less sensitive to drought and O3 ***,the more sensitive components of the photosynthetic electron transport chain appeared to be the probability that an electron from the intersystem electron carriers is transferred to reduce end electron acceptors at the PSI acceptor side（δ（Ro））and the RC density on a chlorophyll basis（RC/ABS）.

Comparative Mountain Hydrology: A Case Study of Wis?ok River in Poland and Chaohe River in China

Hydrological processes in river basins of similar size and morphology may differ significantly due to different climatic conditions. This paper presents a comparative analysis of hydrological characteristics of two river basins located in different climatic zones: the Wisok River Basin in the south-eastern Poland and the Chaohe River Basin in the northern China. The criteria of their choice were similarities in the basin area, main river length and topography. The results show that climate plays a key role in shaping fluvial conditions within the two basins. It is concluded that: 1) precipitation in the Wisok River Basin is more evenly distributed in the yearly cycle, while in the Chaohe River Basin it is highly concentrated in the few summer months; 2) spring snowmelt significantly contributes to runoff in the Wisok River Basin, while its role in the Chaohe River Basin is negligible; 3) in the Wisok River Basin, besides the peak flow in spring, there is also a period of high water in summer resulting from precipitation, while in the Chaohe River Basin there is only one high water period in summer; 4) the Wisok River Basin shows relatively higher stability in terms of the magnitude of intra- and inter-seasonal discharges; 5) during the multi-year observation period, a decrease in both precipitation and runoff was recorded in the two river basins.

The landslide problem

The synonymous use of the general term ＂landslide＂, with a built-in reference to a sliding motion, for all varieties of mass-transport deposits （MTD）, which include slides, slumps, debrites, topples, creeps, debris avalanches etc. in subaerial, sublacustrine, sub- marine, and extraterrestrial environments has created a multitude of conceptual and nomen- clatural problems. In addition, concepts of triggers and Iong-runout mechanisms of mass movements are loosely applied without rigor. These problems have enormous implications for studies in process sedimentology, sequence stratigraphy, palaeogeography, petroleum geol- ogy, and engineering geology. Therefore, the objective of this critical review is to identify key problems and to provide conceptual clarity and possible solutions. Specific issues are the fol- lowing：（1） According to ＂limit equilibrium analyses＂ in soil mechanics, sediment failure with a sliding motion is initiated over a shear surface when the factor of safety for slope stability （F） is less than 1. However, the term landslide is not meaningful for debris flows with a flowing mo- tion. （2） Sliding motion can be measured in oriented core and outcrop, but such measurement is not practical on seismic profiles or radar images. （3） Although 79 MTD types exist in the geological and engineering literature, only slides, slumps, and debrites are viable depositional facies for interpreting ancient stratigraphic records. （4） The use of the term landslide for high- velocity debris avalanches is inappropriate because velocities of mass-transport processes cannot be determined in the rock record. （5） Of the 21 potential triggering mechanisms of sediment failures, frequent short-term events that last for only a few minutes to several hours or days （e.g., earthquakes, meteorite impacts, tsunamis, tropical cyclones, etc.） are more relevant in controlling deposition of deep-water sands than sporadic long-term events that last for thousands to millions of years （e.g.,
