The purpose of this research is to explore how the design of buildings and spaces affects our comfort. The study examines how our visual surroundings and emotional responses are connected. The hypothesis is that people's emotions are influenced by what they see in the buildings, spaces, and furniture around them. Each personality type may have a unique emotional response to their surroundings. The study has three main goals: to analyze the built environment, to assess psychological well-being, and to conduct neuroscience analysis. The built environment analysis is divided into two groups: architecture design analysis and street view design analysis. The psychological well-being analysis identifies three key factors. The neuroscience analysis shows that rectangular shapes combined with linear ornamentation and calming colors create the most comforting building design. The most comfortable street view includes an abundance of greenery with sun-shading effects. In conclusion, the study confirms that architecture affects our emotions. The factors that contribute to our comfort are stored in our mind and body over time. Our mood and emotional state are influenced by what we see in our surroundings. The questionnaire and experiment results support these conclusions.

Architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) global project teamwork is communication intensive and relies heavily on synchronous and asynchronous information and collaboration technologies (ICT). We explore in this paper how an asynchronous ICT, called ThinkTank, reshaped the work practice of design-construction global teams, and how the interaction with this ICT reshaped the purpose and benefits of its use. ThinkTank is a web-based asynchronous collaboration and discussion forum. We introduce the influence diffusion model (IDM) that formalizes the process of identifying the influence of people, messages, and terms mathematically. Discovering who the influence leaders in project teams are can be beneficial and critical from a corporate management perspective, since they can guide or motivate the team towards successful actions and outcomes. We present the ThinkTank-IDM integrated system and its validation with a testbed of 53 AEC global team project archived in ThinkTank over 8 years.

On the basis of ecological principles including holistic optimization, cycling and regeneration, and regional differentiation, land treatment systems (LTSs) for municipal wastewater were continuously explored and updated in the western Shenyang area and the Huolinhe area, China. Intensified pretreatment, addition of a man-made soil filtration layer, and use of an ecologically diversified secondary plant cover were proved to be technically feasible. Hydraulic loading was determined according to the assimilation capacity of soil ecosystems, thus ensuring safe operation of wastewater treatment. This modernized and alternative approach to wastewater treatment had been widely applied in middle-sized and small cities and towns of Northeast China, and these innovative systems in some areas had indicated favorable ecological, social, and economic benefits.

A low-cost, simple to use portable rainfall simulator is developed for use over a 5 m2plot. The simulator is easy to transport and assemble in the field, thereby allowing for necessary experimental replicates to be done. It provides rainfall intensities of between 20 and 100 mm/h by changing the number and type of silicon nozzles used. The Christiansen coefficient of uniformities obtained in the field are appropriate and vary from 79 to 94% for rainfall intensities ranging from 30 to 70 mm/h. In addition, the median volumetric drop diameters measured for rainfall intensities of 30, 50, and 70 mm/h are in the lower range of that of natural rainfall and equal to 1.10 ± 0.08,1.69 ± 0.21, and 1.66 ± 0.20 mm, respectively. The velocities of the raindrops with diameters less than 1.2 mm reached terminal velocities, while raindrops less than 2.0 mm achieved velocities reasonably close to the terminal velocity of natural rainfall. Furthermore,the average time-specific kinetic energy(KET) for rainfall intensities of 30, 50, and 70 mm/h are 257.7,760.1, and 1645.2 J/m2/h, respectively accounting for about 78.0 and 86.5% of the KET of natural rainfall for50 and 70 mm/h rainfall intensity, respectively. The applicability of the portable rainfall simulator for herbicide transport study is investigated using two herbicides(atrazine and metolachlor); herbicide losses in runoff and sediment samples are in the ranges reported in the literature. As a percentage of the amount of herbicide applied, 5.29% of atrazine and 2.15% of metolachlor are lost due to combined water and sediment runoff. The results show that the portable rainfall simulator can be effectively used in studying processes such as pesticide runoff, infiltration mechanisms, and sediment generation and transport at a field plot scale with an emphasis on how surface characteristics such as slope and soil properties affect these processes.

Short-term predictions of potential impacts from accidental release of various radionuclides at nuclear power plants are acutely needed, especially after the Fukushima accident in Japan. An integrated modeling system that provides expert services to assess the consequences of accidental or intentional releases of radioactive materials to the atmosphere has received wide attention. These scenarios can be initiated either by accident due to human, software, or mechanical failures, or from intentional acts such as sabotage and radioIogicaI dispersal devices. Stringent action might be required just minutes after the occurrence of accidental or intentional release. To fulfill the basic functions of emergency preparedness and response systems, previous studies seldom consider the suitability of air pollutant dispersion models or the connectivity between source term, disper- sion, and exposure assessment models in a holistic context for decision support. Therefore, the Gaussian plume and puff models, which are only suitable for illustrating neutral air pollutants in fiat terrain conditional to limited meteorological situations, are frequently used to predict the impact from accidental release of industrial sources. In situations with complex terrain or special meteorological conditions, the proposing emergency response actions might be questionable and even intractable to decision- makers responsible for maintaining public health and environmental quality. This study is a preliminary effort to integrate the source term, dispersion, and exposure assessment models into a Spatial Decision Support System （SDSS） to tackle the complex issues for short-term emergency response planning and risk assessment at nuclear power plants. Through a series model screening procedures, we found that the diagnostic （objective） wind field model with the aid of sufficient on-site meteorological monitoring data was the most applicable model to promptly address the trend of local wind field patt

The impact of Fe concentrations on the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa in aquatic systems under high nitrate and low chlorophyll conditions was studied. The responses of cell density,total and cell chlorophyll-a intracellular Fe content and organic elemental composition of *** to different concentration gradients of Fe（Ⅲ） in the solutions were analysed. The results showed that the proliferation speeds of M. aeruginosa were：（1） decelerated when the Fe（Ⅲ） concentration was lower than 50 μg/L in the solutions,（2） promoted and positively related to the increase of Fe（Ⅲ） concentration from 100 to 500 μg/L in the solutions over the experimental period, and（3） promoted in the early stage but decelerated in later stages by excess adsorption of Fe by cells when the Fe（Ⅲ） concentration was higher than 500 μg/L in the solutions. The maximum cell density, total and cell chlorophyll-a were all observed at 500 μg Fe（Ⅲ）/L concentration. The organic elemental composition of M. aeruginosa was also affected by the concentration of Fe（Ⅲ） in the solutions, and the molecular formula of M. aeruginosa should be expressed as C7–7.5H14O0.8–1.3N3.5–5according to the functions for different Fe（Ⅲ）concentrations. Cell carbon and oxygen content appeared to increase slightly, while cell nitrogen content appeared to decrease as Fe（Ⅲ） concentrations increased from 100 to 500 μg/L in the solutions. This was attributed to the competition of photosynthesis and nitrogen adsorption under varying cell Fe content.

Responses of Soil Microbial Community Structure and Activity to Incorporation of Straws and Straw Biochars and Their Effects on Soil Respiration and Soil Organic Carbon Turnover

Like straw, biochar incorporation can influence soil microorganisms and enzyme activities and soil carbon(C) responses;however,few studies have compared the various effects of straw and biochar and the underlying mechanisms. An experiment was performed to study the changes in soil respiration(SR) and soil organic C(SOC) fluxes in response to the incorporation of three kinds of straw(reed, smooth cordgrass, and rice) and their pyrolyzed products(biochars) at Chongming Island, China. In addition, the microbial activity and community structure of some amended soils were also analyzed to clarify the mechanisms of these responses. The results showed that all biochar incorporation(BC) induced lower SR than the corresponding unpyrolyzed straw incorporation(ST), and the average SR in the soils following BC and ST during the experimental periods was 21.69 and 65.32 μmol CO2 m^-2s^-1, ***, the average SOC content was 16.97 g kg-1 following BC, which was higher than that(13.71 g kg-1) following ST,indicating that compared to ST, BC was a low-C strategy, even after accounting for the C loss during biochar production. Among the BC treatments, reed-BC induced the lowest SR(17.04 μmol CO2 m^-2s^-1), whereas smooth cordgrass-BC induced the highest SR(27.02 μmol CO2 m^-2s^-1). Furthermore, in contrast with ST, BC significantly increased the abundance of some bacteria with poorer mineralization or better humification ability, which led to lower SR. The lower easily oxidizable C(EOC) and higher total C contents of biochars induced lower SR and higher SOC in the soil following BC compared to that following ST. Among the BC treatments,the higher total nitrogen content of rice biochar led to significantly higher soil microbial biomass, and the lower EOC content of reed biochar led to lower soil microbial activity and SR.

Heavy metal pollution affects soil ecological *** and compost can effectively remediate heavy metals and increase soil *** effects and mechanisms of biochar and compost amendments on soil nitrogen cycle function in heavy-metal contaminated soils are not fully *** study examined how biochar,compost,and their integrated use affected ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms in heavy metal polluted *** PCR was used to determine the abundance of ammonia-oxidizing archaea(AOA)and bacteria(AOB).Ammonia monooxygenase(AMO)activity was evaluated by the enzymelinked immunosorbent *** showed that compost rather than biochar improved nitrogen conversion in ***,compost,or their integrated application significantly reduced the effective Zn and Cd *** compost obviously increased As and Cu effective speciation,bacterial 16 S rRNA abundance,and AMO ***,stimulated by compost addition,was significantly more abundant than AOA throughout *** analysis showed that AOB abundance positively correlated with NO_(3)^(-)-N(r=0.830,P<0.01),and that AMO activity had significant correlation with EC(r=-0.908,P<0.01)and water-soluble carbon(r=-0.868,P<0.01).Those seem to be the most vital factors affecting AOB community and their function in heavy metal-polluted soil remediated by biochar and compost.

The current state of lignin has been characterized by these three:(1)as one of the main components in lignocellulosic biomass with an abundant amount;(2)not be taken seriously but treated as a waste product;(3)underutilized due to a complex and stubborn ***,lignin can be a rich source for hydrocarbons and aromatic compounds when gives appropriate *** this work,we have studied the hydrotreatment of alkaline lignin(AL)under relatively mild conditions and further investigated the characterization of hydrogenated lignin(HL),especially the behavior during fast *** recovery of the HL decreased with increasing reaction temperature from 60 wt.%to 41 wt.%in the range of 150-250℃.The hydrotreated products were analyzed using Elemental Analysis,FTIR(for HL)and GC-MS(for bio-oil).The HL samples were found to have a higher hydrogen/carbon atomic effective ratio(H/C_(eff) ratio)and a higher degree of saturation than *** to the internal structure of the lignin before and after hydrotreatment,the side chain groups were removed from AL during the *** that,from the fast pyrolysis of HL,it was observed that more light hydrocarbons and aromatic compounds were formed than that of ***,fast pyrolysis in the hydrogen atmosphere revealed that more volatile fractions were released compared to the Helium *** total olefins yield was increased for HL compared AL from 1.02 wt.%to 3.1 wt.%at 250℃for 7 *** study of HL is instructive to some extent for the industrial utilization of lignin.
