The morphology of sediment particles plays an important role in interfacial *** difficulties in complex morphological description significantly limit the research on interfacial *** this study,images of a single sediment particle extracted from electron microscope photos were used to analyze the gray values and present the probability of shape of the sediment ***,the morphological features of the sediment particles were qualitatively described using the fractal method(surface area-volume method).The fractal dimension D of a single sediment particle was calculated to analyze the features and quantitative complexity of the sediment particle *** indicate that the probability of shape can provide intuitive morphological structure and fully describe the complex morphological characteristics of sediment particle *** fractal dimension abstractly described the complexity of the morphology of a sediment particle surface and matched well with the experimental *** methods discussed in this study are suitable for describing the complex morphology of the sediment particle surface and lay the scientific foundation for further research on the interfacial interaction between the sediment particle and the pollutant.

Single-crystalline Li-doped Co3O4 truncated octahedra with different doping contents were synthesized by a simple combustion method with the fuel of multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs).Controlled experiments showed that the pristine well-defined Co3O4 octahedra were obtained with exposed surfaces of {111} planes without lithium *** comparison with the octahedra,the truncated Co3O4 octahedra were composed of original {111} planes and extra {100} *** could be attributable to the selective adsorption of lithium ions on the {100} planes,making these planes with higher surface energy coexist with the crystal faces of {111}.Furthermore,the Li-doped truncated octahedra and undoped octahedra were used as catalysts in CO oxidation and as anode materials for Li-ion batteries(LIBs).The measurements exhibited that the Li-doped octahedra with added {100} crystal faces showed improved catalytic activity and electrochemical property because of the exposure of the higher energy faces of {100} and enhanced conductivity by Li doping.

The feasibility of using anaerobic baffled reactor （ABR） as onsite wastewater treatment system was discussed. The ABR consisted of one sedimentation chamber and three up-flow chambers in series was experimented under different peak flow factors （PFF of 1 to 6）, superficial gas velocities （between 0.6 and 3.1 cm/hr） and hydraulic retention times （HRT）（24, 36 and 48 hr）. Residence time distribution （RTD） analyses were carded out to investigate the hydraulic characteristics of the ABR. It was found that the PFF resulted in hydraulic dead space. The dead space did not exceed 13% at PFF of 1, 2 and 4 while there was 2-fold increase （26%） at PFF of 6. Superficial gas velocities did not result in more （biological） dead space. The mixing pattern of ABR tended to be a completely- mixed reactor when PFF increased. Superficial gas velocities did not affect mixing pattern. The effects of PFF on mixing pattern could be minimized by higher HRT （48 hr）. The tank-in-series （TIS） model （N = 4） was suitable to describe the hydraulic behaviour of the studied system. The HRT of 48 hr was able to maintain the mixing pattern under different flow patterns, introducing satisfactory hydraulic efficiency. Chemical oxygen demand （COD） and total suspended solids （TSS） removals under all flow patterns were achieved more than 85% and 90%, respectively. The standard deviation of effluent COD and TSS concentration did not exceed 15 mg/L.

Climate change and finger millet: Perception, trend and impact on yield in different ecological regions in Central Nepal

The views of local people on climate change along different ecological regions are relatively unexplored in Nepal. This study was conducted in 13 villages in central Nepal at different altitudes to document the views of small holder farmers and compare their perception with trends of climatic variables, finger millet yield, natural disasters, plant phenology(flowering and fruiting), status of forest and wild life, as well as the spread of diseases and pests. Analysis on the climatic data of stations for 36-41 years between 1975 and 2016 showed significant increases in the minimum temperature in lower tropical climatic region(<500 m), upper tropical to subtropical climatic region(500-2000 m) and temperate climatic region(2000-3000 m) by 0.01, 0.026 and 0.054℃/year, respectively, and an increase of maximum temperature by 0.008, 0.018, and 0.019℃/year, respectively. Rainfall showed a strongly significant decreasing trend in all elevation regions. This result matches with the views of respondents except 38% respondent from temperate climatic region. People from the temperate climatic region also mentioned that current onset of snowfall is delayed but amount of snowfall remained the same. From the documented records, except events of wild fire, frequency of natural disasters events have increased in the recent years, which was in harmony with the views of local people. Multi-linear regression analysis showed that contribution of climatic variables on finger millet yield in lower tropical climatic region and upper tropical to subtropical regions was 23% and 57.3%, respectively, which was supported by increasing trend on average growing degree day(GDD) temperature at the rate of 0.01℃ in upper tropical to subtropical region and 0.007℃ in lower tropical climatic region yearly. Finger millet yield has been increasing at the rate of 7.39 and 36.9 kg/ha yearly in lower tropical climatic region and upper tropical to subtropical climatic region, respectively. The effects of the mat preprocessing method on total volatile organic compounds （TVOC） emission of car mat are studied in this paper. An appropriate TVOC emission period for car mat is suggested. The emission factors for to- tal volatile organic compounds from three kinds of new car mats are discussed. The car mats are preprocessed by washing, baking and ventilation. When car mats are preprocessed by washing, the TVOC emission for all samples tested are lower than that preprocessed in other methods. The TVOC emission is in stable situation for a mini- mum of 4 days. The TVOC emitted from some samples may exceed 25001ag/kg. But the TVOC emitted from washed Polyamide （PA） and wool mat is less than 25001ag/kg. The emission factors of total volatile organic com- pounds （TVOC） are experimentally investigated in the case of different preprocessing methods. The air tempera- ture in environment chamber and the water temperature for washing are important factors influencing on emission of car mats.

The hydrodynamics of turbulent flow through submerged flexible vegetation is investigated in a flume using acoustic Doppler velocimetery(ADV)*** flow characteristics such as the energetics and momentum transfer derived from convcntional spectral and quadrant analyses are considered as the flow encounters a finite vegetation *** with numerous canopy flow experiments,a shear layer and coherent vortex structures near the canopy top emerge caused by Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities after the flow equilibrates with the vegetated *** in stabilities are commonly attributed to velocity differences between non-vegetated and vegetated canopy layers in agreement with numerous experiments and simulations conducted on dense rigid *** power-spectral density function for vertical velocity turbulent fluctuations at different downstream positions starting from the edge of the vegetation layer are also *** a preset water depth,the dominant dimensionless frequency is found to be surprisingly invariant around 0.027 despite large differences in vegetation *** ejection and sweep events significantly contribute to the Reynolds stresses near the top of the *** momentum flux carried by ejections is larger than its counterpart carried by the sweeps above the canopy ***,the momentum flux carried by sweeps is larger below the top of the canopy.

In the microalgae harvesting process,which includes a step for dewatering the algal suspension,directly reusing extracted water in situ would decrease the freshwater footprint of cultivation *** various algae harvesting techniques,membrane-based filtration has shown numerous *** study evaluated the reuse of permeate streams derived from Scenedesmus obliquus(***)biomass filtration under bench-scale and pilot-scale *** particular,this study identified a series of challenges and mechanisms that influence the water reuse potential and the robustness of the membrane harvesting *** a preliminary phase of this investigation,the health status of the initial biomass was found to have important implications for the harvesting performance and quality of the permeate stream to be reused;healthy biomass ensured better dewatering performance(i.e.,higher water fluxes)and higher quality of the permeate water streams.A series of bench-scale filtration experiments with different combinations of cross-flow velocity and pressure values were performed to identify the operative conditions that would maximize water *** selected conditions,2.4 m·s^(-1)and 1.4 bar(1 bar=105 Pa),respectively,were then applied to drive pilot-scale microfiltration tests to reuse the collected permeate as a new cultivation medium for *** growth in a pilot-scale *** investigation revealed key differences between the behavior of the membrane systems at the two scales(bench and pilot).It indicated the potential for beneficial reuse of the permeate stream as the pilot-scale experiments ensured high harvesting performance and growth rates of biomass in permeate water that were highly similar to those recorded in the ideal cultivation ***,different nutrient reintegration protocols were investigated,revealing that both macro-and micro-nutrient levels are critical for the success of the reuse approach.
