Emission characteristics,environmental impacts and health risk assessment of volatile organic compounds from the typical chemical industry in China

To study the volatile organic compounds(VOCs)emission characteristics of industrial enterprises in China,6 typical chemical industries in Yuncheng City were selected as research objects,including the modern coal chemical industry(MCC),pharmaceutical industry(PM),pesticide industry(PE),coking industry(CO)and organic chemical industry(OC).The chemical composition of 91 VOCs was quantitatively *** results showed that the emission concentration of VOCs in the chemical industry ranged from 1.16 to 155.59 mg/m^(3).Alkanes were the main emission components of MCC(62.0%),PE(55.1%),and OC(58.5%).Alkenes(46.5%)were important components of PM,followed by alkanes(23.8%)and oxygenated volatile organic compounds(OVOCs)(21.2%).Halocarbons(8.6%-71.1%),OVOCs(9.7%-37.6%)and alkanes(11.2%-27.0%)were characteristic components of *** largest contributor to OFP was alkenes(0.6%-81.7%),followed by alkanes(9.3%-45.9%),and the lowest onewas alkyne(0%-0.5%).Aromatics(66.9%-85.4%)were the largest contributing components to SOA generation,followed by alkanes(2.6%-28.5%),and the lowest one was alkenes(0%-4.1%).Ethylene and BTEX were the key active species in various chemical *** human health risk assessment showed workers long-term exposed to the air in the chemical industrial zone had a high cancer and non-cancer risk during work,and BTEX and dichloromethane were the largest contributors.

Characterization and source apportionment of volatile organic compounds in Hong Kong:A 5-year study for three different archetypical sites

Initial success has been achieved in Hong Kong in controlling primary air pollutants,but ambient ozone levels kept increasing during the past three *** organic compounds(VOCs)are important for mitigating ozone pollution as its major *** study analyzed VOC characteristics of roadside,suburban,and rural sites in Hong Kong to investigate their compositions,concentrations,and source *** showthat the TVOC concentrations were 23.05±13.24,12.68±15.36,and 5.16±5.48 ppbv for roadside,suburban,and rural sites between May 2015 to June 2019,*** using Positive Matrix Factorization(PMF)model,six sources were identified at the roadside site over five years:Liquefied petroleum gas(LPG)usage(33%–46%),gasoline evaporation(8%–31%),aged air mass(11%–28%),gasoline exhaust(5%–16%),diesel exhaust(2%–16%)and fuel filling(75–9%).Similarly,six sources were distinguished at the suburban site,including LPG usage(30%–33%),solvent usage(20%–26%),diesel exhaust(14%–26%),gasoline evaporation(8%–16%),aged air mass(4%–11%),and biogenic emissions(2%–5%).At the rural site,four sources were identified,including aged airmass(33%–51%),solvent usage(25%–30%),vehicular emissions(11%–28%),and biogenic emissions(6%–12%).The analysis further revealed that fuel filling and LPG usage were the primary contributors to OFP and OH reactivity at the roadside site,while solvent usage and biogenic emissions accounted for almost half of OFP and OH reactivity at the suburban and rural sites,*** findings highlight the importance of identifying and characterizing VOC sources at different sites to help policymakers develop targeted measures for pollution mitigation in specific areas.

Optimizing distribution of multiple tuned mass dampers for building structures with inverse element exchange method

Multiple tuned mass dampers(MTMDs)reduce dynamic response with multiple specified frequencies of building *** optimization algorithms for placement design exist,though they rarely conform to code-based verification nor produce high quality solutions without high computational effort and high *** study proposes an inverse element exchange method(IEEM)with multi-level programming and compares it to a single tuned mass damper(STMD)and uniform distribution of multiple tuned mass dampers in the frequency and time domains.A ten-story shear building is used for the numerical case *** results show that the proposed method can offer improvement over the STMD,uniform distribution of multiple tuned mass dampers,and distribution optimized by genetic algorithms(GA)with regard to minimizing the interstory drift ratio(IDR)in both the frequency and time domains and the time consumption for optimization.

Rapid reduction of air pollution and short-term exposure risks in China

With the continuous control of anthropogenic emissions,China’s air quality has improved significantly in recent *** this background,research on how the short-term exposure risks caused by air pollution in China have changed is *** study utilized hourly concentration data from ground observation stations and the official air quality guidelines of the Ministry of Ecology and environment of China and the World Health Organization as standards to systematically investigate the spatiotemporal characteristics and short-term exposure risks of air pollution in China from 2015 to *** results indicate that various atmospheric pollutants except for ozone showed a decreasing trend ***,both single pollutant air pollution days(SAPDs)and multiple pollutant air pollution days(MAPDs)showed varying degrees of reduction within 15 and 25 days,*** was dominated mainly by excessive PM_(2.5)and PM_(10)pollutants,while MAPD was dominated mainly by excessive pollutant combinations,including PM_(2.5)+PM_(10),CO+PM_(2.5)+PM_(10),and SO_(2)+PM_(2.5)+PM_(10).As the concentration of atmospheric pollutants decreased,the total excess risk(ER)decreased yearly from 2015 to 2022,but there were significant regional ***,the ER is less than 0.25%in southern China,in the range of 0.25%-0.5%in the North China Plain and some cities in the northeast,and higher than 1%in the *** matter is currently the primary pollutant posing short-term exposure risk in China,especially due to the impact of sandstorm *** study indicates that China’s atmospheric cleaning action is significantly beneficial for reducing health risks.

Vertical variations in planar lamination of marine shale: Elucidating hydrodynamic changes during the Ordovician-Silurian transition on the Upper Yangtze Block

The hydrodynamics and their evolution on the Upper Yangtze Block during the Ordovician-Silurian transition period remain unclear. The present study is an assessment of how regional and global events may have influenced the hydrodynamic evolution based on a planar lamination investigation of the shales from the Upper Yangtze Block. Analyses of large thin sections and argon-ion polished thin sections using field emission-scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM) showed that there are four types of planar lamination, namely, silty graded planar lamination(SGPL), silt-clay graded planar lamination(SCGPL), silt-clay interlaminated planar lamination(SCIPL), and paper-like planar lamination(PPL). SGPL is formed by turbidity current with a flow speed less than 15 cm/s. SCGPL is formed by turbidity currents with a flow speed less than 15 cm/s for normal grading type and 15-25 cm/s for alternating grading type. SCIPL has a continuum of sparsely spaced type, closely spaced type, and alternating type, which is formed by bottom current with an increasing flow speed from 15 to 25 cm/s to above 25 cm/s. PPL can be divided into normal grading and composite grading types. The former is formed by vertical settling, while the latter is formed by bottom current with a flow speed of 5-15 cm/s. Vertically, types of planar lamination varied from SGPL to PPL and then SCIPL manifesting the waxing and waning of flow speed with a positive excursion at graptolite biozone Metabolograptus extraordinarius(WF4) and a negative excursion at graptolite biozone Persculptograptus persculptus(LM1). The sudden decrease in flow speed across Linxiang and graptolite biozone Paraorthograptus pacificus(WF3) and the subsequent progressive increase from graptolite biozone Akidograptus ascensus(LM2)to graptolite biozone Demirastrites triangulatus(LM6) and to graptolite biozone Stimulograptus sedgwickii(LM8) during deposition of the Ordovician-Silurian transition succession on the Upper Yangtze Block were linked to th

Plant-substrate biochar properties critical for mediating reductive debromination of 1,2-dibromoethane

Dibromoethane is a widespread,persistent organic *** are known mediators of reductive dehalogenation by layered Fe^(Ⅱ)-Fe^(Ⅲ)hydroxides(green rust),which can reduce 1,2-dibromoethane to innocuous bromide and ***,the critical characteristics that determine mediator functionality are lesser *** biochar substrates were pyrolyzed at 600℃and 800℃,characterized by elemental analysis,X-ray photo spectrometry C and N surface speciation,X-ray powder diffraction,specific surface area analysis,and tested for mediation of reductive debromination of 1,2-dibromoethane by a green rust reductant under anoxic conditions.A statistical analysis was performed to determine the biochar properties,critical for debromination kinetics and total debromination *** was shown that selected plant based biochars can mediate debromination of 1,2-dibromoethane,that the highest first order rate constant was 0.082/hr,and the highest debromination extent was 27%in reactivity experiments with 0.1μmol(20μmol/L)1,2-dibromoethane,≈22 mmol/L Fe^(Ⅱ)GR,and 0.12 g/L soybean meal biochar(7 days).Contents of Ni,Zn,N,and P,and the relative contribution of quinone surface functional groups were significantly(p<0.05)positively correlated with 1,2-dibromoethane debromination,while adsorption,specific surface area,and the relative contribution of pyridinic N oxide surface groups were significantly negatively correlated with debromination.

Factors Influencing Local Visitors’Willingness to Pay an Entrance Fee of the East Lake,Wuhan,China

The infrastructure of East Lake has undergone a gradual process of degeneration,necessitating the allocation of adequate financial resources to ensure the preservation and sustenance of its ecological ***,insufficient funds for conservation and management pose a problem for the management of Urban East ***,the research aimed to(1)identify the local visitor’s satisfaction level with East Lake’s facilities and environmental quality;(2)determine the visitors’perception of the conservation and management aspect of East Lake;(3)identify factors influencing local visitors’willingness to pay an entrance fee to East Lake,and(4)estimate an appropriate entrance fee for East *** the Contingent Valuation Method,visitors'willingness to pay was *** accumulation of 449 samples was based on convenience *** results indicated that visitor satisfaction and attitude were both *** addition,respondents had a good perception on East ***,income,and education level were factors that substantially affected visitors’willingness to pay;however,only the visitor variable had a positive *** estimated entrance fee was 2 USD per individual per *** research’s findings provided significant policy and recommendations;they would serve as a baseline for the management to impose an entrance fee in East Lake.

Consumer products are important reservoirs and sources of organophosphate tri-esters and di-esters:Characteristics,mass inventory,and implication for waste management

Numerous studies documented the occurrence of organophosphate tri-esters(tri-OPEs)and di-esters(di-OPEs)in the *** information is available on their occurrence in waste consumer products,reservoirs and sources of these *** study collected and analyzed 92 waste consumer products manufactured from diverse polymers,including polyurethane foam(PUF),polystyrene(PS),acrylonitrile butadiene styrene(ABS),polypropylene(PP),and polyethylene(PE)to obtain information on the occurrence and profiles of 16 tri-OPEs and 10 *** concentrations of di-OPEs(18−370,000 ng/g,median 1,700 ng/g)were one order of magnitude lower than those of tri-OPEs(94−4,500,000 ng/g,median 5,400 ng/g).The concentrations of both tri-and di-OPEs in products made of PUF,PS,and ABS were orders of magnitude higher than those made of PP and *** compositional patterns of OPEs varied among different polymer types but were generally dominated by bisphenol A bis(diphenyl phosphate),triphenyl phosphate,tris(1-chloro-2-propyl)phosphate,di-phenyl phosphate(DPHP),and bis(2-ethylhexyl)*** industrially applied di-OPEs(di-n-butyl phosphate and DPHP)exhibited higher levels than their respective tri-OPEs,contrary to their production *** non-industrially applied chlorinated di-OPEs were also detected,with concentrations up to 97,000 ng/*** findings suggest that degradation of tri-OPEs during the manufacturing and use of products is an important source of *** mass inventories of tri-OPEs and di-OPEs in consumer products were estimated at 3,100 and 750 tons/year,*** study highlights the importance of consumer products as emission sources of a broad suite of OPEs.

Increase in the variability of terrestrial carbon uptake in response to enhanced future ENSO modulation

El Niño-Southern Oscillation(ENSO)is a major driver of climate change in middle and low latitudes and thus strongly influences the terrestrial carbon cycle through land-air *** the ENSO modulation and carbon flux variability are projected to increase in the future,but their connection still needs further *** investigate the impact of future ENSO modulation on carbon flux variability,this study used 10 CMIP6 earth system models to analyze ENSO modulation and carbon flux variability in middle and low latitudes,and their relationship,under different scenarios simulated by CMIP6 *** results show a high consistency in the simulations,with both ENSO modulation and carbon flux variability showing an increasing trend in the *** higher the emissions scenario,especially SSP5-8.5 compared to SSP2-4.5,the greater the increase in *** flux variability in the middle and low latitudes under SSP2-4.5 increases by 30.9%compared to historical levels during 1951-2000,while under SSP5-8.5 it increases by 58.2%.Further analysis suggests that ENSO influences mid-and low-latitude carbon flux variability primarily through *** occurrence may potentially be attributed to the increased responsiveness of gross primary productivity towards regional temperature fluctuations,combined with the intensified influence of ENSO on land surface temperatures.
