High-resolution multi-scale air pollution system:Evaluation of modelling performance and emission control strategies

A high percentage of the world's population lives in areas where air pollutant concentrations exceed the World Health Organization *** work aims to develop and test,a high-resolution multi-scale air pollution modelling system by integrating a set of adequate *** system is able to provide detailed air pollutant concentrations in urban areas and support air quality management strategies through a better identification of different atmospheric *** also allows furthering the design and assessment of air pollution control measures for a specific *** evaluate its performance and suitability,the system was applied to the Macao Special Administrative Region(SAR),China,one of the most densely populated areas on earth,during a winter period when this area is affected by high levels of Particulate Matter(PM).Although the developed system tends to underestimate the PM concentrations,it revealed a good performance in reproducing the temporal and spatial air pollution *** exceedances of the Chinese air quality standards were calculated and high population exposure to PM pollution was *** tested urban atmospheric emission reduction scenarios have shown air quality improvements,indicating that emission reduction measures at urban level should focus on the domestic ***,it is crucial to implement joint pollution prevention strategies with neighbouring regions to improve the air quality in Macao *** approach developed in this work can support policymakers in defining new strategies to reduce atmospheric pollution in urban areas.

Distribution characteristics and removal rate of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in different treatment processes of two drinking water plants

Emerging pollutants,such as antibiotics and antibiotic-resistance genes,are becoming increasingly important sources of safety and health *** water safety,which is closely related to human health,should receive more attention than natural water body ***,minimal research has been performed on the efficacy of existing treatment processes in water treatment plants for the removal of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance *** address this research gap,this study detected and analyzed six main antibiotics and nine antibiotic resistance genes in the treatment processes of two drinking water plants in *** were collected over three months and then detected and analyzed using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and fluorescence *** total concentrations of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in the influent water of the two water plants were characterized as December>March>*** precipitation and filtration processes of the Zou Maling Water Plant and Yu Shidun Water Plant successfully removed the *** ozone-activated carbon process increased the removal rate of most antibiotics to 100%.However,a large amount of antibiotic resistance gene residues remained in the effluents of the two water *** experiments demonstrated that the existing ozone-activated carbon processes could not effectively remove antibiotic resistance *** study provides a reference for the optimization of drinking water treatment processes for antibiotics and antibiotic resistance gene removal.

Improvement of Surface Mechanical and Tribological Characteristics of L-PBF Processed Commercially Pure Titanium through Ultrasonic Impact Treatment

Multi-pass ultrasonic impact treatment(UIT)was applied to modify the microstructure and improve the mechanical and tribological characteristics at the near-surface region of commercially pure Ti(CP-Ti)specimens produced by the laser powder bed fusion(L-PBF)*** considerably refined the L-PBF process-related acicular martensites(α′-M)and produced a well-homogenized and dense surface microstructure,where the porosity content of 1-,3-,and 5-pass UITed samples was reduced by 43,60,and 67%,*** UITed samples showed an enhancement in their near-surface mechanical properties up to a depth of about 300μ*** nanoindentation results for the 3-pass UITed sample revealed an increase of about 53,45,and 220%in its nanohardness,H/E_(r),and H_(3)/E_(r)^(2)indices,*** stylus profilometry results showed that performing the UIT removed the L-PBF-related features/defects and offered a smooth *** roughness average(R_(a))and the skewness(R_(sk))of the 3-pass UITed sample were found to be lower than those of the L-PBFed sample by 95 and 223%,*** the UIT also enhanced the material ratio,where the maximum load-bearing capacity(~100%)in as-L-PBFed(as-built)and 3-pass UITed samples was obtained at 60-and 10-µm depths,*** tribological investigations showed that applying the UIT resulted in a significant reduction of wear rate and average coefficient of friction(COF)of *** instance,under the normal pressures of 0.05 and 0.2 MPa,the wear rate and COF of the 3-pass UITed sample were lower than those of the L-PBFed sample by 65 and 58%,and 20 and 17%,respectively.

Exergy Analysis of Charge and Discharge Processes of Thermal Energy Storage System with Various Phase Change Materials:A Comprehensive Comparison

Thermal energy storage(TES) is of great importance in solving the mismatch between energy production and *** this regard,choosing type of Phase Change Materials(PCMs) which are widely used to control heat in latent thermal energy storage systems,plays a vital role as a means of TES ***,this field suffers from lack of a comprehensive investigation on the impact of various PCMs in terms of *** address this issue,in this study,in addition to indicating the melting temperature and latent heat of various PCMs,the exergy destruction and exergy efficiency of each material are estimated and compared with each ***,in the present work the impact of PCMs mass and ambient temperature on the exergy efficiency is *** results proved that higher latent heat does not necessarily lead to higher exergy ***,to obtain a suitable exergy efficiency,the specific heat capacity and melting temperature of the PCMs must also be *** to the results,LiF-CaF_(2)(80.5%:19.5%,mass ratio) mixture led to better performance with satisfactory exergy efficiency(98.84%) and notably lower required mass compared to other ***,the highest and lowest exergy destruction are belonged to GR25 and LiF-CaF_(2)(80.5:19.5) mixture,respectively.

Electrochemical oxidation of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances: Mechanisms, implications, and challenges

Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances(PFASs) have recently gained considerable attention due to their potential risks to human health and ecosystems. The response to these concerns has led to regulations and bans on legacy PFASs, such as perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid. Thus, fluoride production has shifted toward short-chain PFASs and emerging fluorinated alternatives. Several technologies are available for PFAS degradation, among which electrochemical oxidation(EO) is a promising method to mineralize legacy PFASs and other emerging fluorinated alternatives in water *** review provides an overview of the recent advancements in EO, comprehensively elucidating PFAS degradation mechanisms at the anode and exploring key factors that influence PFAS removal efficiency, such as anode materials as well as reactor designs and configurations. Moreover, the review elucidates the impact of operating conditions and parameters, including current density, electrolytes, pH, initial PFAS concentrations, and other coexisting pollutants, on the EO process. Finally, the constraints in the EO process are discussed when considering practical implementations, including undesired by-product generation, incomplete mineralization resulting in the accumulation of short-chain PFASs, and low PFAS concentrations in the natural environment leading to mass transfer limitations and low defluorination efficiency. Consequently, this review provides a perspective on potential solutions integrating the pre-concentration steps and EO process for effective PFAS remediation.

Solar Radiation Estimation Based on a New Combined Approach of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Genetic Algorithms (GA) in South Algeria

When designing solar systems and assessing the effectiveness of their many uses,estimating sun irradiance is a crucial first *** study examined three approaches(ANN,GA-ANN,and ANFIS)for estimating daily global solar radiation(GSR)in the south of Algeria:Adrar,Ouargla,and *** proposed hybrid GA-ANN model,based on genetic algorithm-based optimization,was developed to improve the ANN *** GA-ANN and ANFIS models performed better than the standalone ANN-based model,with GA-ANN being better suited for forecasting in all sites,and it performed the best with the best values in the testing phase of Coefficient of Determination(R=0.9005),Mean Absolute Percentage Error(MAPE=8.40%),and Relative Root Mean Square Error(rRMSE=12.56%).Nevertheless,the ANFIS model outperformed the GA-ANN model in forecasting daily GSR,with the best values of indicators when testing the model being R=0.9374,MAPE=7.78%,and rRMSE=10.54%.Generally,we may conclude that the initial ANN stand-alone model performance when forecasting solar radiation has been improved,and the results obtained after injecting the genetic algorithm into the ANN to optimize its weights were *** model can be used to forecast daily GSR in dry climates and other climates and may also be helpful in selecting solar energy system installations and sizes.

In the restructured electricity market,microgrid(MG),with the incorporation of smart grid technologies,distributed energy resources(DERs),a pumped-storage-hydraulic(PSH)unit,and a demand response program(DRP),is a smarter and more reliable electricity *** consists of gas turbines and renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic systems and wind *** bidding strategies,prepared by MG operators,decrease the electricity cost and emissions from upstream grid and conventional and renewable energy sources(RES).But it is inefficient due to the very high sporadic characteristics of RES and the very high outage *** solve these issues,this study suggests non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm Ⅱ(NSGA-Ⅱ)for an optimal bidding strategy considering pumped hydroelectric energy storage and DRP based on outage conditions and uncertainties of renewable energy *** uncertainty related to solar and wind units is modeled using lognormal and Weibull probability ***-based DRP is used,especially considering the time of outages along with the time of peak loads and prices,to enhance the reliability of MG and reduce costs and emissions.

Tailoring crystallization zinc hydroxide sulfates growth towards stable zinc deposition chemistry

The unstable zinc anode/electrolyte interface induced by corrosion,interfacial water splitting reaction,and dendrite growth seriously degrades the performances of metal Zn anode in aqueous ***,the nucleation and growth of zinc hydroxide sulfate(ZHS),an interfacial by-product,has been tailored by Tween 80 in the electrolyte,which thereby assists in in-situ forming a dense solid electrolyte interphase(SEI)with small-sized ZHS and evenly distributed Tween *** SEI has high corrosion resistance and uniform distribution of zinc ions,which not only contributes to blocking the interfacial side reactions but also induces stable and calm zinc plating/***,the modified electrolyte can confer the assembled Zn||Zn symmetric cell with a stable operation life over 1500 h at 1 mA·cm^(−2)and 1 mAh·cm^(−2)as well as the practical Zn||NH4V4O10 full battery with a high-rate capacity of 120 mAh·g^(−1)at the current density of 5 A·g^(−1).This work provides a way for regulating and reusing interfacial by-products,and a new sight on stabilization electrodes/electrolyte interfaces.

Performance of a three-phase shunt active power filter(SAPF)relies on the capability of the controller to track the reference ***,designing an accurate current controller is crucial to guarantee satisfactory SAPF *** paper presents a model predictive current controller(MPCC)for a low-cost,four-switch,shunt active power filter for power quality improvement.A four-switch,B4,converter topology is adopted as an SAPF,hence offering a simple,robust,and low-cost *** addition,to further reduce overall cost,only two interfacing filter inductors,instead of three,are used to eliminate switching current *** proposed SAPF model MPCC is detailed for implementation,where simulation and experimental results validate effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm showing a 20%improvement in total harmonic distortion compared with a conventional hysteresis band current controller.

Unveiling the protective role of biofilm formation on the photoaging of microplastics

In natural water, microplastics（MPs） inevitably undergo microbial colonization to form biofilm, while the effect of biofilm formation on the photoaging of MPs remains unknown. This study systematically investigated the photoaging behavior of disposable box-derived polypropylene（PPMPs） and polystyrene（PSMPs） mediated by formed biofilm in water. After incubating in Weihe water samples for 105 d, the biofilm was validated to form in PPMPs and PSMPs, with higher formation in PSMPs. In particular, biofilm formation inhibited the photoaging of PPMPs and PSMPs, with an 11.1% and 50.6% decrease in photooxidation compared to their virgin counterparts after 20 d of ultraviolet（UV） irradiation. Moreover, the photoaging route of MPs such as the reaction priority of functional groups（e.g., C–H, C=O, and benzene ring） was altered, indicating the important role of biofilm formation in the photoaging process of MPs. The protective effect of the biofilm was mainly caused by the role of optical light filters that absorbed UV energy by sacrificing themselves. Also, as the main attacker on MPs, the production of reactive oxygen species（ROS, mainly1O2and ·OH） was inhibited by biofilm, which was mainly responsible for the decreased photoaging of MPs. This study revealed the important role of biofilm in the photoaging process of MPs and suggested a higher resistance of（micro）plastics in natural water than that in the laboratory using pure MPs, which contributed to a deeper understanding of the environmental fate and pollution of MPs.
