Wetland and habitat dynamics in the evolving landscape of the Middle Yangtze River Basin

Wetlands play a critical role in the global environment. The Middle Yangtze River Basin(MYRB), known for its abundant wetland resources, has experienced notable changes resulting from the complex interplay of environmental factors. Therefore, we investigated the spatiotemporal characteristics of wetland ecological quality in the MYRB from 2001 to *** the random forest(RF) regression algorithm and patch-generated land-use simulation(PLUS) model, we forecasted variations in wetland habitat quality and their determinants under the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway-Representative Concentration Pathway(SSPRCP) framework from 2035 to 2095. The main findings are as follows:(1) The RF algorithm was optimal for land-use and land-cover(LULC) classification in the MYRB from 2001 to 2020,when notable changes were observed in water bodies and buildings. However, the forested area exhibited an increase and decrease of 3.9% and 1.2% under the SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios, respectively, whereas farmland exhibited a diminishing trend.(2) Wetlands were primarily concentrated in the central and eastern MYRB, with counties in the southwest exhibiting superior ecological-environmental quality from 2001 to 2020. Notably,wetland coverage revealed significantly high level, significant changes, frequent but relatively minor changes under the SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, and SSP 5-8.5 scenarios, respectively.(3)Regions with lower habitat quality were primarily concentrated in urbanized areas characterized by frequent human activities, indicating a clear degradation in habitat quality across different scenarios. In conclusion, we established a foundational framework for future investigations into the eco-hydrological processes and ecosystem quality of watersheds.

Impact of Soil Fumigation Practices on Soil Nematodes and Microbial Biomass

This study was designed to understand the impact of methyl bromide (MB) (CH3Br) and its alternatives on both free-living and root-knot nematodes in the soil. A randomized complete block experiment with six treatments and 4 replicates (each replicate in a separate greenhouse) was established in Qingzhou, Shandong Province, China. In addition to MB and untreated control (CK) treatments there were four alternative soil fumigation practices including MB+virtually impermeable films (VIF), metam sodium (MS), MS +VIF and soil solarization combined with selected biological control agents (SS+BCA). Two tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.) cultivars, cv. Maofen-802 from the Xian Institute of Vegetable Science, China, and cv. AF179 Brillante from the Israeli Hazera Quality Seeds, were selected as test crops. The results indicated that Rhabditidae was the most dominant population with percentage abundance as high as 85% of the total number of identified free-living nematodes, followed by that of Cephalobidae. Methyl bromide and its alternatives except for the non-chemical SS+BCA treatment controlled the target pest, root-knot nematodes. Also, the impact of the three chemical alternatives on free-living nematode number and functional group abundance was similar to the impact associated with a typical methyl bromide application. Chemical fumigation practices, especially that with MB, significantly reduced the number of nematodes in the soil and simultaneously significantly reduced the number of nematode genera thereby reducing nematode diversity. All the four soil chemical fumigation activities decreased soil microbial biomass and had an obvious initial impact on microorganism biomass. Furthermore, both plant-parasitic and fungivore nematodes were positively correlated with soil microbial biomass.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Odontolabis fallaciosa(Coleoptera: Lucanidae) with its phylogenetic implications

In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of Odontolabis fallaciosa was sequenced for the first time using the next generation sequencing method. Like most reported mitogenomes of scarab beetles, it was a double-stranded circular molecule, consisting of 13 protein-coding genes（PCGs）, 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, and a control region. The mitogenome of O. fallaciosa was 19,614 bp in length. The base nucleotide composition in the mitogenome of O. fallaciosa was： A（40.0%）, T（30.5%）, C（18.5%） and G（11.0%）, with the total AT content of 70.5%. The phylogenetic analysis of twelve species of stag beetles and other three scarab beetles showed that O. fallaciosa and Aegus angustus share a common ancestor. The mitogenomic data could provide a reliable reference for the future study on conservation, phylogeny and even evolution of these species.

Taxonomic notes on some species of Neolucanus Thomson(Coleoptera: Lucanidae) from China

As a part of ongoing investigations on Neolucanus from Chinese fauna, N. swinhoei hengshanensis Ichikawa ＆ Fujita, 1987 is confirmed as a junior synonym of N. imitator Kriesche, 1935 based on the types examination. Holotype of the little-known species of N. tao Kriesche, 1935 and the male genitalia are illustrated for the first time, in comparison with the sympatric species of N. guangxi Schenk, 2009. Wrong diagnoses of N. nitidus （Saunders, 1854） are pointed out in two widely used books published by Japanese researchers. In order to correct these errors, type specimen of this species and its intraspecific variations are exhibited, with brief discussion on its problematic subspecies. The poorly known species ofN. pallescens Leuthner, 1885 is redescribed with the discovery of its false type specimen. All of the type habitus, figures of male genitalia including female genitalia are given.

Viability and hatchability of brine shrimp Artemia franciscana cysts after passing through the digestive system of eared grebes Podiceps nigricollis

Brine shrimp Artemia franciscana provide food for many migrating and staging birds that spend summer and fall on Great Salt Lake,Utah,*** produce live young and cysts(hard-walled eggs);these cysts are commercially harvested on Great Salt Lake and support a large industry in *** is unclear the impact that millions of hungry birds have on the Artemia population in the *** help assess that,this study evaluated cyst viability(percentage of cysts that contain an embryo)and hatchability(percent of cysts that hatch)from cysts that had passed through the digestive tract of eared grebes Podiceps nigricollis and cysts obtained directly from Great Salt Lake at the same site where each grebe was *** was significantly higher for cysts collected from the water column(19%)than from the stomach(0.3%)or intestines(3%)of eared *** also was significantly different for cysts collected from the water column(29%),stomach(0.7%),and intestines(5%).These results indicate that eared grebes nutritionally benefit from eating cysts and that they may be an important food source for grebes in late fall after the adult population of Artemia dies off due to the water becoming too ***,enough cysts survive their passage through the digestive system that grebes can vector hatchable cysts to other waterbodies.

Taxonomic revision of Prosopocoilus gracilis(Saunders,1854) and its allied species from China(Coleoptera:Lucanidae)

Prosopocoilus gracilis （Saunders, 1854） and its seven allied species from China are revised. Lectotype, paralectotypes of P. gracilis （Saunders, 1854） and P. denticulatus （Boileau, 1901） are designated. The doubtful species, P. piceipennis （Westwood, 1855） is evidently confirmed as a valid species with verification of its type depository. Two highly similar species, P. crenulidens （Fairmaire, 1895） and P. denticulatus （Boileau, 1901） are compared in detail for correcting longstanding wrong diagnoses of them. P. similis Schenk, 2009 is illustrated with male genitalia firstly. Two recently-published species, P. andreasi Schenk, 2009 and P. katsurai Fujita, 2010 are treated as new junior synonyms. All the five valid species in this paper are redescribed, with illustrations of adult （including type） habitus, male and female genitalia if they are available. A key to large males is provided for identifying them briefly.

Land cover change and multiple remotely sensed datasets consistency in China

Introduction:Although numerous land cover datasets can act as references for understanding land cover change in China,the inconsistencies between the datasets can also provide *** studies on the consistency between land cover datasets have mostly focused on land cover type consistencies and have ignored data consistencies in land cover ***:Therefore,we aim to analyse the consistencies in land cover changes through likelihood assessment *** compared the spatiotemporal changes in forest,grassland,cropland,and bare land in the Climate Change Initiative land cover dataset(CCI-LC),Moderateresolution Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer land cover dataset(MCD12Q1),China’s National Land Use and Cover Change(CNLUCC),Globeland30 and Global Land Cover Fine Surface Covering 30(GLC-FCS30)datasets in *** results showed that the percentages and changes in each land cover type in MCD12Q1 were different from those in the other ***:For example,the proportion of grassland in MCD12Q1 was the highest,reaching 48.04%.The places with high consistency were the places where the land cover types were concentrated,and the bare land had the highest ***,the consistency of China’s land cover change was quite low,and the percentage of low consistency was more than 87%from *** of the data with the global artificial impervious area(GAIA)and Hansen-Global Forest Change(Hansen-GFC)datasets showed that the percentage of high construction gain consistency(38.83%)was higher than the forest change consistency,and the percentage forest loss high consistency(8.85%)was lower than the forest gain high consistency(12.76%).Conclusion:The results not only provide a basis for the use of land cover datasets but also give a clearer understanding of the pattern of land cover changes.

Oxidation of S(Ⅳ)in Seawater by Pulsed High Voltage Discharge Plasma with TiO_2/Ti Electrode as Catalyst~

Oxidation of S（IV） to S（VI） in the effluent of a flue gas desulfurization（FGD） sys- tem is very critical for industrial applications of seawater FGD. This paper reports a pulsed corona discharge oxidation process combined with a TiO2 photocatalyst to convert S（IV） to S（VI） in artificial seawater. Experimental results show that the oxidation of S（IV） in artificial seawater is enhanced in the pulsed discharge plasma process through the application of TiO2 coating electrodes. The oxidation rate of S（IV） using Ti metal as a ground electrode is about 2.0x10-4 mol. L 1. min-1, the oxidation rate using TiO2/Ti electrode prepared by annealing at 500 ~C in air is 4.5x 10-4 tool. L-a ~ min-1, an increase with a factor 2.25. The annealing temper- ature for preparing TiO2/Ti electrode has a strong effect on the oxidation of S（IV） in artificial seawater. The results of in-situ emission spectroscopic analysis show that chemically active species （i.e. hydroxyl radicals and oxygen radicals） are produced in the pulsed discharge plasma process. Compared with the traditional air oxidation process and the sole plasma-induced oxidation process, the combined application of TiO2 photocatalysts and a pulsed high-voltage electrical discharge process is useful in enhancing the energy and conversion efficiency of S（IV） for the seawater FGD system.

Effects of benthic algae on release of soluble reactive phosphorus from sediments: a radioisotope tracing study

To evaluate the effect of benthic algae on soluble reactive phosphorus（SRP） release from sediments in shallow lakes, experiments on SRP release with and without benthic algae in sediment cores and an experiment on SRP uptake by benthic algae were conducted using the radioisotope（32P） tracing method. The dissolved oxygen（DO） concentration in sediment cores was also investigated. The results show that benthic algae effectively reduce the release of SRP from sediments to overlying water. The uptake of SRP by benthic algae, which is the direct way in which benthic algae affect the SRP release from sediments, is low in filtered water and increases with the SRP concentration. However, in the experiment, the increased uptake rate lasted for a short time（in one hour）, and after that it returned to a low rate. Benthic algae make the DO concentration and the oxic layer thickness increased, which can indirectly reduce the SRP release from sediments. These findings indicate that benthic algae can reduce the SRP release from sediments in both direct and indirect ways. It seems that the indirect way also plays an important role in reducing the SRP release from sediments.

High Conductivity Water Treatment Using Water Surface Discharge with Nonmetallic Electrodes

Although electrohydraulic discharge is effective for wastewater treatment,its application is restricted by water conductivity and limited to the treatment of low conductivity water. For high conductivity water treatment,water-surface discharge is the preferred ***. the metallic electrodes are easily corroded because of the high temperature and strong oxidative environment caused by gas phase discharge and the electrochemical reaction in *** a result. the efficiency of the water treatment might be affected and the service life of the reactor might be *** order to avoid the corrosion problem,nonmetallic electrode water-surface discharge is introduced into high conductivity water treatment in the present ***-felt and water were used as the high voltage electrode and ground electrode,respectively.A comparison of the electrical and chemical characteristics showed that nonmetallic electrode discharge maintained the discharge characteristics and enhanced the energy efficiency,and furthermore,the corrosion of metal electrodes was avoided.
