The competition between coral and algae in marine reefs is pervasive through geologic time;that competition determines the structure and composition of reef communities, which we see in the fossil record. However, the relationships between coral and calcareous algae in reefs are poorly understood. To study this relationship, several hand samples and thin sections were examined from nine different foralgal reef localities around the world. Foralgal reefs typically extend from about 20 m depth or shallower on the seaward side of the reef. The first section is Salt Mountain, Alabama, which preserves a Paleocene reef. It contains a high percentage of red coralline algae with benthic foraminifera. The second section is IDOP-U1376, IIA Limestone, it is Middle Eocene, in the form of an isolated reef sandwiched between two igneous beds. The third section is the Utoe’ Limestone, New Caledonia, it is Middle Eocene in age and is composed mainly of grain-boundstone units with some igneous interlayered. The fourth section is the Darnah Formation in the West-Darnah roadcut section, Northeast Libya, it is Middle Eocene in age, it is composed of highly fossiliferous limestone (corals, red coralline algae, echinoids, mollusks, foraminifers, and bryozoans). The fifth section, the Al Bayda Formation (Algal Limestone Member) in Northeast Libya, is in the Drayanah—Al Abyar roadcut, Northeast Libya, it has several species of algae but also includes a high percentage of buildups of coral species. The sixth section is the Oligo-Miocene Al Faidiyah Formation (Al Fatayah Cement Quarry) limestone unit in Northeast Libya. The seventh section is (Core-core 20) late-early to middle Miocene Limestone Unit-Cicuco Field, NW Colombia. The eighth section is the Benghazi Formation at Benghazi Cement Quarry, in Northeast Libya, it is fossiliferous limestone, consisting of coral, algae, mollusks, and echinoids. Blue algae and green algae are the dominant phytoplankton groups that contribute to the eutrophication and the water bloom in inland water of China. The absorption coefficients （spectra） of the algae, which do not change with its intrinsic optical characteristics and the observation geometry, are strictly additive quantities. The characteristics of the absorption spectra of the two algae are presented. The pure blue algae and the pure green algae cultured in the laboratory environment are diluted and mixed at ten volume ratios. The Quantitative Filter Technique was applied to measure their absorption spectra. The ＂hot-ethanol extraction＂ method was chosen to calculate their concentration of Chlorophyll a. The retrieval algorithm developed in this study extracts the mapping information between each individual alga and their Chlorophyll a concentration via Continuous Wavelet Transform, and retrieves the Chlorophyll a concentration of each alga in their mixture using a trust region optimizer. The results show that the retrieved and the measured Chlorophyll a concentrations of the blue algae and the green algae components in the ten mixture match well with the average relative error of 5.55%.

The rate of dust fallout was monitored during a period from August 2009 to July 2011 in protected (closed) and non-protected/open (unenclosed) areas in the northern desert of Kuwait. The dust fallout rates on degraded and protected sites were on average 18.8 and 44.1 g·m-2·month-1, respectively. Higher rate of dust fallout in protected area may be attributed to biologic factors that are responsible for relative abundance of fine-grained sediment accumulations (Mostly silty sand). Wind deflation of fine grained sediment fractions and development of coarse-grained surface lag deposits in degraded area may be accountable for the reduction of its potentiality for suspended dust. The study indicates the importance of the vegetation cover in regulating sediment availability for atmospheric dust emission.

A composite fall-slippage model for cliff recession in the sedimentary coastal cliffs

A newly defined,250 km by 500 km,Carboniferous-Triassic subduction-accretion complex,the Mazar accretionary prism in the western Kunlun,comprises two subduction complexes and a forearc-basin succession.(1) The Bazar Dara subduction complex contains imbricated blocks of sandstone,arenite,limestone and meta-volcanic rocks in a matrix of weakly metamorphosed Triassic deep-sea *** meta-volcanic rocks include basalt,diabase,spilite,and andesitic *** element geochemistry shows that pillow and amygdaloidal basalts are oceanic-island *** zone has Ordovician to Permian fossils and is situated on the older, more highly deformed and metamorphosed side of the prism adjacent to the Sailiyak magmatic arc. (2) The Heweitan subduction complex is composed of blocks of limestone,turbidite,and radiolarite in a slate-phyllite matrix intercalated with calc-alkalic volcanic *** complex has Permian to Triassic fossils and is situated on the younger,less deformed,and metamorphosed side of the prism adjacent to the suture zone.(3) The Qitai forearc basins are infilled with turbidites(Late Triassic) intercalated with carbonates;these rocks overlie the accretionary *** accretion-related structure is dominated by large-scale northeast-dipping thrusts and subvertical cleavage stitched by 215-190 Ma *** is an overall decrease in metamorphic grade and deformation intensity from the arc to the suture zone across the Bazar Dara and Heweitan subduction *** Mazar accretionary prism formed by subduction-accretion processes during closure of the Paleotethyan Ocean and the final docking of the Gondwanan Karakoram-Qiangtang block to the Cathaysian(Eurasian) Kunlun block.

A composite fall-slippage model is proposed in this study for the Tertiary sedimentary coastal cliffs of Varkala in the western coastal tract of Peninsular India which are retreating landwards due to the combination of several *** fall model in the present study accounts both spring seepage and wave action,resulting in undercutting and this fall affects only the topmost laterite and the just below sandstone in the *** in this area affects all the litho-units and hence the geologic characteristics of all the litho-units are considered for developing the slippage *** mathematically derived model can be used in other cliffs exhibiting the same morphology as well as the one controlled by the same influencing *** model differs from other models in incorporating multi-lithounits as well as *** cliffs form a part of the aspiring geopark in the Global Geopark Network and hence a study on the cliff recession is a pressing requirement.

The Bambili maars are twin contemporaneous maars embedded in trachytic rocks. The two maars are separated by a low lying inter-Maar dome whose inner walls dip towards the Southern Maar. The Bambili Northern Maar (BNM) contains water and its floor is found at an altitude lower than the Bambili Southern Maar (BSM) (50 m) which is swampy and drains into the BNM. Both maars have very steep vertical walls. Three different units are identified in the area. Unit 1 is 1 m thick sequence, characterize by the presence of matrix supported fine-grained fallouts (ash and lapilli size) with stratified diffused bedding planes. This unit is further subdivided into three different layers: L1, L2 and L3 from bottom to top with increasing sizes of particles respectively. This layer shows reverser grading and its grain sizes rarely exceed 2 cm and this unit shows no depositional structures. Unit 2 is an unstratified unit predominantly made up of tephra deposits. Within these deposits are found blocks of sizes ranging between 2 and 10 cm of different petrographic types. They include scoria, basalts, trachyte, and granite cognate. The last unit, Unit 3 is distinctly stratified characterized by well sorted, heterolithologic, graded bedding layers which are matrix supported. Base on the composition and grain sizes, this unit was subdivided into 7 horizons: h1 - h7. Within this unit, two sequences of deposits are distinguished: U1 and U2. Both sequences are characterized by alternation of lapilli and tuff beds. The clast comprises of juvenile materials, mudstone which are highly vesicular and altered rock fragments. Other products identified within the area are ferolithic volcanic bombs (5 - 20 cm), xenocrystals (2 - 4 cm) within finer deposits. They are elongated and show visible twinned planes. Explosion breccias are equally identified occurring as bolders. Along the inner walls of the maars are also found large basaltic and trachytic blocks which are remnants of pre-maar unit within maar

The relationships between nutrient dynamics,microbial community,and macrofauna are important in bioremediation *** this study,we examined the effects of marine clam Scapharca subcrenata sedimentary activities on the microbial assemblages,benthic nutrient chemistry,and its subsequent remediation impacts on organic effluent in the sediment of an aquaculture wastewater bioremediation *** results showed that microbial community composition differed significantly in the clam area(ANOSIM,R=0.707,P=0.037).Pyrosequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA gene revealed a total of 48 unique phyla,79 classes,107 orders,197 families,and 321 genera amongst all *** most dominant bacterial assemblages were Proteobacteria,Bacteroidetes,Acidobacteria,Firmicutes,Verrucomicrobia,and Actinobacteria,with Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes significantly higher in all treatment samples than control(P<0.001).All dominant phyla in the list were shared across all samples and accounted for 89%(control)and 97%(treatment)of the total 16S *** nutrient flux rates from the sediments into the water(treatment group)were 51%(ammonium),88%(nitrate),77%(nitrite)and 45%(phosphate)higher,relative to the control implying increased mineralization,degradability,and mobility of the benthic ***,significantly increased oxygen consumption rates were evident in the clam area signifying improved oxygen distribution within the *** organic effluent contents associated with total-organic matter,carbon,nitrogen,and,phosphate were lower among the clam treatments relative to the *** results describe the potential roles and mechanisms contributed by marine bivalve *** on benthic-bacterial-community assembly,nutrient balance,and effluent reduction in the sediments of aquaculture wastewaters bioremediation system.

Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi Gold Triangle is the important distributive province of microgmined gold deposits in China. The authors discovered for the first time platiniferous mercury-gold, mercury-gold and platinum-gold during the study on the occurrence of gold in the Jinya microgramed gold deposit in this area. The discovery is of great importance to the study of mineralogy, ore processing and genesis of the Jinya gold deposit.
