Cochlear spiral ganglion neurons(SGNs)are bipolar ganglion cells and are the first neurons in the auditory transduction *** transmit complex acoustic information from hair cells to second-order sensory neurons in the cochlear nucleus for sound *** to SGNs causes largely irreversible hearing impairment because these neurons are highly differentiated cells and cannot regenerate,making treatment of sensorineural hearing loss(SNHL)arising from SGN injury *** exposed to ototoxic drugs or damaging levels of noise or when there is loss of neurotrophic factors(NTFs),aging,and presence of other factors,SGNs can be irreversibly damaged,resulting in *** has been found that NTFs and stem cells can induce regeneration among dead spiral ganglion *** this paper,we summarized the present knowledge regarding injury,protection,and regeneration of SGNs.

Background: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss(SSNHL) is a prevalent emergency in ear, nose, and throat practice. Previous studies have demonstrated that intratympanic steroid therapy(IST) can serve as a salvage treatment for SSNHL after the failure of systemic steroid therapy(SST).Objective: This study aimed to analyze the efficacy of modified IST involving the insertion of a tympanic tube and gelfoam as a salvage treatment for patients with SSNHL, and to explore its associated ***: Totally, 74 patients who were aged 22–81 years with SSNHL were enrolled and allocated to either the control group(n = 25) or the treatment group(n = 49) based on their treatment modalities. All patients received SST lasting for at least 7 days. Subsequently, patients in the treatment group, after SST failure, underwent IST twice a week for 2–6 weeks, while the control group did not. Efficacy was assessed by the improvement in pure tone average at the affected frequency at the beginning and end of ***: Hearing improvement in all patients after IST in the treatment group was 9.71 ± 14.84 dB, with significant improvement at affected frequencies(250-8000 Hz) compared with the control group(P ent factor for pure tone average improvement after treatment(P = 0.002), whereas age, duration of SST, and time of IST were not(P > 0.05).Conclusion: The modified IST was demonstrated to be a safe and effective method as a salvage treatment for SSNHL. This study explored the efficacy of a modified IST approach, incorporating the utilization of tympanic tubes and gelfoam as key components. The findings underscore the advantages of gelfoam as a strategic drug carrier placed in the round window niche. According to the World Health Organization’s world report on hearing,nearly 2.5 billion people worldwide will suffer from hearing loss by 2050,which may contribute to a severe impact on individual life quality and national *** hearing loss(SNHL)occurs commonly as a result of noise exposure,aging,and ototoxic drugs,and is pathologically characterized by the impairment of mechanosensory hair cells of the inner ear,which is mainly triggered by reactive oxygen species accumulation,inflammation,and mitochondrial *** recent advances have been made in understanding the ability of cochlear repair and regeneration,there are still no effective therapeutic drugs for *** herbal medicine which is widely distributed and easily accessible in China has demonstrated a unique curative effect against SNHL with higher safety and lower cost compared with Western *** we present trends in research for Chinese herbal medicine for the treatment of SNHL,and elucidate their molecular mechanisms of action,to pave the way for further research and development of novel effective drugs in this field.

Objective:To share a single institutional experience with clinical research on COVID-related olfactory dysfunction(OD).Data Source/Method:Narrative review of published original data and ongoing clinical trials on COVID-related OD at Washington University from 2020 to ***:There were three new diagnostic-/patient-reported outcome measures developed and *** report five clinical trials of interventions for COVID-related olfactory disorders:combined Visual-Olfactory Training(VOLT)with patient-preferred scents versus standard olfactory training(VOLT trial),oral gabapentin versus placebo(Gabapentin for the Relief of Acquired Chemosensory Experience trial),nasal theophylline irrigations versus placebo(Smell Changes and Efficacy of Nasal Theophylline trial),stellate ganglion block(single-arm),and mindfulness-based stress reduction(MBSR)versus lifestyle intervention(MBSR trial).Conclusions:Initial intervention trials for COVID-related OD have shown potential for improving subjective and objective olfactory ***,there remains no gold standard treatment that definitively outperforms placebo in controlled ***,continued investigation of novel therapeutic strategies for COVID-related OD is necessary to maximize olfactory outcomes for affected patients.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common tumor of the salivary glands, accounting for approximately 50% of salivary gland lesions. It develops mainly in the salivary glands: parotid (80%), submaxillary (10%), sublingual (1%) and in the accessory oral-pharyngeal glands (9%). The aim of this work was to report 2 cases of pleomorphic adenoma of atypical location and then to discuss the difficulties linked to its diagnostic and therapeutic management in the Malian context. They were a 40-year-old man and a 72-year-old woman. They were admitted to the ent department of the “Luxembourg Mere-infant” hospital for oropharyngeal swelling for the first and swelling of the palate for the second. The clinical expression was a swelling in both cases, of a hard, mobile consistency with healthy mucosa on their surface. The remainder of the physical examination was unremarkable. The diagnosis of a tumor of the oropharynx and palate was made following clinical radiological examinations. The histopathological examination of the surgical specimen made it possible to make the diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma of the palate and the left palatine tonsil. The follow-up surgery was straightforward, with a favorable outcome. Pleomorphic adenomas are relatively rare benign tumors of the accessory salivary glands;their clinical expression remains swelling. Therapeutic management is surgery and the diagnosis is confirmed by histopathological examination.
