Investigation of the Acceptability of Cultured Meat in University Students

Background: Over the past 20 years, cultured meat has drawn a lot of public attention as a potential solution to issues with animal husbandry, including inadequate use of natural sources, improper animal welfare practices, and possible risks to public health and safety. The novel method of producing meat through culture reduces the need for animals to produce muscle fiber, thereby obviating the necessity for animal slaughter. Apart from its ethical advantages, cultured meat presents a possible way to fulfill the expanding need for food among growing populations. The purpose of this research was to find out whether Turkish students would be willing to pay for and accept cultured meat. Technique: Method: 371 university students who willingly consented to fill out a questionnaire and provide demographic data make up the research sample. Questions from previous studies on the acceptability of cultured meat were compiled to create the survey. The research’s data collection took place in March and April of 2022. The research was completed in June 2022 after the data had been processed and analyzed. Results: The results showed that the majority of participants were female and had omnivorous eating habits. Based on the results of the Bonferroni correction test, students with a higher intention to purchase and consume cultured meat were those who received economics and business education. Students with two years of university education had a higher overall survey score than those with four years of education (p < 0.05). Furthermore, it is discovered that there is a negative correlation between the participants’ ages and their Factor 2 (using cultured meat as an alternative to industrial meat) and Factor 3 (consuming and purchasing it) section points (r = -109, p = 0.036) (r = -0.121, p = 0.019). In conclusion, university students generally have a negative outlook on health-related issues, such as eating cultured meat as an alternative.

Impact of intestinal ischemia/reperfusion and lymph drainage on distant organs in rats

Effect of parenteral and early intrajejunal nutrition on pancreatic digestive enzyme synthesis, storage and discharge in dog models of acute pancreatitis

AIM： To study the effect of early intrajejunal nutrition on enzyme-protein synthesis and secretion during acute pancreatitis. METHODS： Fifteen dogs were randomly divided into parenteral nutrition （n = 7） and early intrajejunal nutrition groups （n = 8）. An acute pancreatitis model was induced by injecting 5% sodium taurocholate and trypsin into the pancreas via the pancreatic duct. Intrajejunal nutrition was delivered with a catheter via a jejunostomy tube after the model was established for 24 h. On d 1 and 7 and at the beginning of nutritional support, radioactive tracing and electron microscopes were used to evaluate the enzyme-protein synthesis in acinar cells, the subcellular fractionation and the change in zymogen granules after 1.85 × 10^6 Bq L-3H phenylalanine was infused at 30, 60, 120, and 180 min. RESULTS： The 3H radioactivity in pancreatic acinar cells reached its peak level at 60 min, and the contents in the early intrajejunal nutrition group were higher than those in the parenteral nutrition group, which were then decreased. The mean number and area of zymogen granules did not show any significant statistical difference in both groups on d i or on d 7 （P 〉 0.05）. CONCLUSION： Early intrajejunal nutrition might be effective in dogs with acute pancreatitis.

Need of integrated dietary therapy for persons with diabetes mellitus and “unhealthy” body constitution presentations

From a perspective of Chinese medicine （CM）, persons with unregulated ＂unhealthy＂ body constitution （BC） will further develop chronic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus （DM）. Conventional dietary therapy with nutrition component has its limitations in the regulation of ＂unhealthy＂ BC. However, empirical evidence supports that ＂unhealthy＂ BC can be regulated with food natures and flavors from a perspective of CM. Presentations of ＂unhealthy＂ BC types, such as Yin-deficiency, Yang-deficiency and Yin-Yangdeficiency were found in persons with DM. It would be necessary to regulate the ＂unhealthy＂ BC presentations with integration of conventional dietary therapy and Chinese food therapy. The ultimate goal is to either stabilize glycaemic control or prevent the development of other chronic diseases leading to reduction of disease burden, such as disease-related poor quality of life, stress of healthcare professionals and the rising of healthcare cost.

BACKGROUND nutritional support for patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit(ICU)is an important part of clinical treatment and care,but there are significant implementation *** To introduce a modified nutritional support management system for ICU patients based on closed-loop information management and psychological *** The division of functions,personnel training,system construction,development of an intelligent decision-making software system,quality control,and improvement of the whole process were carried out to systematically manage nutritional support for ICU *** Following the implementation of the whole process management system,the scores of ICU medical staff’s knowledge,attitudes/beliefs,and practices regarding nutritional support were comprehensively *** proportion of hospital bed-days of total enteral nutrition(EN)in ICU patients increased from 5.58%to 11.46%,and the proportion of EN plus parenteral nutrition increased from 42.71%to 47.07%.The rate of EN initiation within 48 h of ICU admission increased from 37.50%to 48.28%,and the EN compliance rate within 72 h elevated from 20.59%to 31.72%.After the implementation of the project,the Self-rating Anxiety Scale score decreased from 61.07±9.91 points to 52.03±9.02 points,the Self-rating Depression Scale score reduced from 62.47±10.50 points to 56.34±9.83 points,and the ICU stay decreased from 5.76±2.77 d to 5.10±2.12 *** The nutritional support management system based on closed-loop information management and psychological counseling achieved remarkable results in clinical applications in ICU patients.

Objective This study aimed to investigate the effects of N,N-dimethylglycine(DMG) on the concentration and metabolism of plasma homocysteine(pHcy) in folate-sufficient and folate-deficient *** In this study, 0.1% DMG was supplemented in 20% casein diets that were either folatesufficient(20 C) or folate-deficient(20 CFD). Blood and liver of rats were subjected to assays of Hcy and its metabolites. Hcy and its related metabolite concentrations were determined using a liquid chromatographic *** Folate deprivation significantly increased pHcy concentration in rats fed 20 C diet(from 14.19 ±0.39 μmol/L to 28.49 ± 0.50 μmol/L;P < 0.05). When supplemented with DMG, pHcy concentration was significantly decreased(12.23 ± 0.18 μmol/L) in rats fed 20 C diet but significantly increased(31.56 ±0.59 μmol/L) in rats fed 20 CFD. The hepatic methionine synthase activity in the 20 CFD group was significantly lower than that in the 20 C group;enzyme activity was unaffected by DMG supplementation regardless of folate sufficiency. The activity of hepatic cystathionine β-synthase(CBS) in the 20 CFD group was decreased but not in the 20 C group;DMG supplementation enhanced hepatic CBS activity in both groups, in which the effect was significant in the 20 C group but not in the other *** DMG supplementation exhibited hypohomocysteinemic effects under folate-sufficient conditions. By contrast, the combination of folate deficiency and DMG supplementation has deleterious effect on pHcy concentration.

Impact of sustained virologic response on chronic kidney disease progression in hepatitis C

AIM To determine how sustained virological response at 12 wk(SVR12) with direct acting antivirals(DAAs) for the treatment of hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection affects chronic kidney disease(CKD) progression. METHODS A retrospective analysis was performed in patients aged ≥ 18 years treated for HCV with DAAs at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System from 2014-2016. The treatment group was compared to patients with HCV from 2011-2013 who did not undergo HCV treatment, prior to the introduction of DAAs; the control group was matched to the study group in terms of age, gender, and ethnicity. Analysis of variance and co-variance was performed to compare means between SVR12 subgroups adjusting for *** Five hundred and twenty-three patients were evaluated. When comparing the rate of change in estimated glomerular filtration rate(e GFR) one-year after HCV treatment to one-year before treatment, patients who achieved SVR12 had a decline in GFR of 3.1 m L/min ± 0.75 m L/min per 1.73 m^2 compared to a decline in e GFR of 11.0 m L/min ± 2.81 m L/min per 1.73 m^2 in patients who did not achieve SVR12(P = 0.002). There were no significant clinical differences between patients who achieved SVR12 compared to those who did not in terms of cirrhosis, treatment course, treatment experience, CKD stage prior to treatment, diuretic use or other co-morbidities. The decline in e GFR in those with untreated HCV over 2 years was 2.8 m L/min ± 1.0 m L/min per 1.73 m^2, which was not significantly different from the e GFR decline noted in HCV-treated patients who achieved SVR12(P = 0.43).CONCLUSION Patients who achieve SVR12 have a lesser decline in renal function, but viral eradication in itself may not be associated improvement in renal disease progression.

Effects of glutamine-containing total parenteral nutrition on phagocytic activity and anabolic hormone response in rats undergoing gastrectomy

AIM: To investigate the effect of glutamine (Gln)-containing parenteral nutrition on phagocytic activity and to elucidate the possible roles of Gln in the secretion of anabolic hormones and nitrogen balance in rats undergoing a gastrectomy. METHODS: Rats with an internal jugular catheter were divided into 2 experimental groups and received total parenteral nutrition (TPN). The TPN solutions were isonitrogenous and identical in nutrient compositions except for differences in amino acid content. One group received conventional TPN (control), and in the other group, 25% of the total amino acid nitrogen was replaced with Gin. After receiving TPN for 3 d, one-third of the rats in each experimental group were sacrificed as the baseline group. The remaining rats underwent a partial gastrectomy and were killed 1 and 3 d, respectively, after surgery. Plasma, peritoneal lavage fluid (PLF), and urine samples were collected for further analysis. RESULTS: The Gln group had fewer nitrogen losses 1 and 2 d after surgery (d1, 16.6±242.5 vs-233.4±205.9 mg/d, d2, 31.8±238.8 vs-253.4±184.6 mg/d, P<0.05). There were no differences in plasma growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-1 levels between the 2 groups before or after surgery. The phagocytic activity of peritoneal macrophages was higher in the Gln group than in the control group 1 d after surgery (A 1185±931 vs323±201, P<0.05). There were no differences in the phagocytic activities of blood polymorphonuclear neutrophils between the 2 groups at the baseline or on the postoperative days. No significant differences in interleukin-1β or interleukin-6 concentrations in PLF were observed between the 2 groups. However, tumor necrosis factor-α level in PLF was significantly lower in the Gln group than in the control group on postoperative d 3. CONCLUSION: TPN supplemented with Gln can improve the nitrogen balance, and enhance macrophage phagocytic activity at the site of injury. However, Gin supplementation has no effect on p
