Stress,Burnout,and Resilience:Are Teachers at Risk?

It is increasingly common to find alarming news related to tragic events occurring in schools around the world.Being able to deal with these situations without getting hurt is a task not suitable for everyone.In general,teachers are the ones who must deal with this type of situation in addition to other daily problems that appear in any classroom that make the level of stress to which they are subjected can become dangerous.This research aims to know the current situation of teachers in a region of southeastern Spain in terms of their level of work stress,resilience,and other associated variables,for which an ex post facto quantitative approach study was designed.For this purpose,an ad hoc sociodemographic questionnaire,and questions based on the Teaching and Learning International Survey of the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development,the Maslach Burnout Inventory,and the Brief Resilient Coping Scale were applied.The participating sample consisted of 470 teachers.The main findings were that 6%of teachers had burnout(high emotional exhaustion,high cynicism,and low professional effectiveness simultaneously).Resilience correlated inversely with stress,emotional exhaustion,cynicism,excessive teaching,and difficulty maintaining classroom discipline.In conclusion,knowing the needs of teachers allows us to reflect on what kind of prevention and intervention programs are necessary to improve the well-being of teachers and thus improve the quality of education.

In recent years, achievement goal has become one of the most important field in educational psychology. Achievement goal theory holds that achievement goal is the internal cause of individual achievement action and the source of achievement motivation. Achievement goal can be divided into two kinds: mastery goal and performance goal. The former causes adaptive motivation model and has positive influences on learning, while the latter causes non-adaptive model and has negative influences on learning. Social comparison is also called interpersonal comparison, which is a universal phenomenon in the social life. It plays an important role in human activities and experiential world. In this paper, we mainly discuss whether we can intervene social comparison process in order to have an influence on self-efficacy and emotional reaction under classroom teaching environment for different types of achievement goals students. Experiment design in this paper is 3(grade one, grade two, grade three) ′2(male, female)′2(high mastery approach goal, high performance approach goal), an E-prime program is used. Since mathematics is the main subject, mathematical calculation is chosen as the experiment material. The participants are junior middle school students contain grade one, grade two and grade three, participant for each grade is 100, with an average age of 14.2 years old. A total of 300 participants which contain 140 boys and 160 girls are enrolled. First, the participants need to complete the achievement goal questionnaire, and 40 participants, which have high mastery-approach goal and high performance-approach goal should be selected to carry out the following experiment. Second, the selected participants need to do a self-efficacy questionnaire test. Third, the participants have an experiment test, and after the participants read the instruction, they begin to perform the task of exponent arithmetic. 孤独感,指受到社会孤立或与他人隔绝的感觉。研究发现,孤独感与消极的情感状况有关,尤其是与年轻人的抑郁症状有关。然而孤独和抑郁症状之间的关联机制尚不清楚。针对这一问题,有研究者提出通过应对策略来调节年轻人孤独感和抑郁症状之间的关系,应对策略是指为应对压力所做出的认知和行为上的努力。因而本研究旨在探究在西班牙大学生群体中应对策略在孤独感与抑郁症状之间的中介作用。本研究中,我们采用应对策略量表(包含积极(engagement)和消极(disengagement)两个维度,每个维度又包括应对问题(problem engagement)和应对情绪(emotion engagement)两个子维度,每个子维度下包括两种应对策略),R-UCLA孤独感量表以及Beck抑郁量表对364名西班牙大学生(275名女性)进行了抽样调查以检验孤独感、不同应对策略和抑郁症状水平。采用多重中介分析,来确定孤独感和抑郁症状之间的关系是否是由积极应对策略(如解决问题)和消极应对策略(如回避问题)起部分中介作用。结果显示1)问题解决和认知重构的间接效应显著,且与孤独感和抑郁症状均呈负相关;2)问题回避,愿望式思考,自我批评的间接效应显著,且与孤独感呈正相关。3)愿望式思考和自我批评与抑郁症状呈正相关,而问题回避与抑郁症状呈负相关。4)社会支持、情绪表达和孤独感呈负相关,情绪抑制和孤独感呈正相关,但三种应对策略均与抑郁症状无显著相关。中介模型表明,孤独感阻碍了以问题为中心的积极应对策略的使用,从而降低了高孤独感的西班牙大学生的问题解决能力,导致他们出现抑郁症状的风险增加。同时这些结果也表明,在西班牙大学生中,孤独感增加了自我批评和愿望式思考这两种应对策略的使用,使得消极应对策略的使用增加,进而增加了出现抑郁症状的风险。综上,本研究探讨了在西班牙大学生群体中,应对策略在孤独感和抑郁症状之间的中介作用。研究结果发现,减少孤独感、改善积极应对策略、避免消极应对策略、提高问题回避技能是西班牙大学生减少抑郁症状的重要措施。

The coronavirus pandemic has affected all facets of our lives and all ages and social strata worldwide.Measures have been taken to protect against the spread of the virus,such as more rigorous hand hygiene,the use of face masks and social distancing.However,the focus has often been on young people,who have been seen as a group lacking sufficient respect for government-imposed measures.This review outlines the preventive measures that have been taken in different countries and discusses their specific impact on young people and adolescents,taking into account the developmental stage and concrete needs of this age group.It summarizes those studies that have provided information on compliance with preventive measures by young people and adolescents,concluding that although compliance levels among this age group are lower than among older adults,the general view of youths as non-compliant is not consistent with real,objective data.The review also summarizes different views regarding the possible reasons for this lower level of compliance,taking into account both social(gender and age)and personal factors(personality,empathy,prosociality,self-control,cognitive styles and motivations),and discusses the practical implications of these findings for the future.

Clinical benefits of rational-emotive stress management therapy for job burnout and dysfunctional distress of special education teachers

It has been observed that managing job burnout and dysfunctional distress constitute part of the major challenges among special educators,and that empirical data on the management of burnout and dysfunctional distress associated with the job of special education teachers are lacking in the literature.The current article discusses the clinical benefits of a rational-emotive stressmanagement therapy program in reducing the level of job burnout symptoms and dysfunctional distress in special education teachers,using evidence from a 2018 clinical trial study that reported the efficacy of this intervention.Results show the clinical benefits and implications of conducting a rational-emotive stress management intervention,and recommendations are made for future research.

Validity and Reliability of a Mental Health Recovery Checklist for Young Adults

The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the internal consistency and construct validity of a self-report checklist measuring clinical mental health recovery across six key domains:family and relationships,occupation and school,physical health,mental health,spirituality,and social support systems.The Mental Health Recovery Checklist(MHRC)was developed at The Dorm,an intensive outpatient mental health treatment program for young adults in New York,NY,and Washington DC that services individuals between the ages of 18 and 35 years old.The present study is cross-sectional,as data were pulled from clients’records who were discharged between January 2018 and May 2023.Pearson Correlations and Cronbach’s alpha were used to determine scale reliability.To establish validity,an Exploratory Factor Analysis(EFA)was conducted to assess a single-factor model using Principal Axis Factoring.Cronbach’s alpha was high(α=0.88),indicating good reliability.In the EFA,all items loaded strongly on a single factor.The unidimensional structure revealed in the EFA highlights the interconnected nature of various life domains as they pertain to mental health recovery in young adults.Future research is warranted to explore whether there are additional dimensions of mental health recovery that have not been assessed in the present scale.

Use of cognitive-behavioral career coaching to reduce work anxiety and depression in public employees

BACKGROUND Public employees worldwide are increasingly concerned about work anxiety and depression.Cognitive-behavioral career coaching has emerged as a promising strategy for addressing these mental health disorders,which can negatively impact on a person's overall well-being and performance.AIM To examine whether cognitive-behavioral career coaching reduces work anxiety and depression among Nigerian public employees.METHODS A total of 120 public employees(n=60)suffering from severe anxiety and depression were randomly assigned to the treatment or control groups in this study.Cognitive behavioral coaching was provided twice a week to those in the treatment group,whereas no treatment was given to those in the control group.As part of the study,the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scales and Beck Depression Inventory were used to collect data.RESULTS Analysis of covariance of the data from participants indicates a significant effect of cognitive-behavioral career coaching on work anxiety and depression.CONCLUSION Insights into the underlying mechanisms by which cognitive behavior career coaching exerts its effects have been gained from this study.Also,the study has gathered valuable data that can inform future practice and guide the development of strategies for supporting mental health at work.

Determinants of State of Mental Health among Caregivers of Children with Disabilities

This study aimed to determine the association and predictive capacities of job satisfaction,workplace stress,work motivation,and self-esteem on state of mental health of caregivers of children with disabilities in South-West Nigeria.The self-determination theory provided a theoretical framework for the study.A closed-ended paper-pencil questionnaire tagged‘Mental Healthiness Scale for Caregivers’was used for data collection from 241 care-givers of children with disabilities.Data collected was analyzed using descriptive of frequency count,simple per-centage and mean as well as inferential statistics involving Pearson product moment correlation and Binary Logistic Regression at 95%confidence interval.Findings revealed a significant but inverse association between self-esteem,workplace stress and mental health.Work motivation had a direct association with mental health while job satisfaction had no significant association with mental health of caregivers of children with disabilities.Caregivers(18–40 years)had the highest odds for mental health concerns.Lowered self-esteem and workplace stress increased mental health concerns while job satisfaction significantly predicted a higher likelihood for posi-tive state of mental health among caregivers of children with disabilities.

The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and Persons with Disabilities

In this paper, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030(SFDRR) is evaluated with respect to its ramifications for persons with disabilities. In the SFDRR, persons with disabilities were referenced either directly or indirectly as part of the preamble,the guiding principles, the priorities for action, and the role of stakeholders. In addition, the 2015 World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, during which the SFDRR was adopted, incorporated explicit recommendations toward a disability-accessible and inclusive environment not evident in previous disaster risk reduction conferences. The infusion of disability-related terms and concepts such as accessibility, inclusion, and universal design throughout the SFDRR document was significant. These concepts,which have their origin in disability studies, are used in the SFDRR document to refer to the needs of all in disaster,not only to people with disabilities. These disability-related concepts will now serve the field of disaster risk reduction as important overarching disaster-related principles. The authors conclude that the SFDRR has firmly established people with disabilities and their advocacy organizations as legitimate stakeholders and actors in the design and implementation of international disaster risk reduction policies.
