Comparing the efficiency of artificial neural networks in sEMG-based simultaneous and continuous estimation of hand kinematics

Surface Electromyography(sEMG)plays a key role in many applications such as control of Human-Machine Interfaces(HMI)and neuromusculoskeletal *** has strongly nonlinear relations to joint kinematics and reflects the subjects’intention in moving their *** relations have been traditionally examined by either integrated biomechanics and multi-body dynamics or gesture-based classification ***,these methods have drawbacks that limit their *** from them,joint kinematics can be continuously reconstructed from sEMG via estimation approaches,for instance,the Artificial Neural Networks(ANNs).The Comparison of different ANNs used in different studies is difficult,and in many cases,*** current study focuses on fairly evaluating four types of ANN over the same dataset and conditions in proportional and simultaneous estimation of 15 hand joint angles from 10 sEMG *** presented ANNs are Feedforward,Cascade-Forward,Radial Basis Function(RBFNN),and Generalized Regression(GRNN).Each ANN is applied to its special parametric *** the methods efficiently solved the regression problem of the complex multi-input multi-output *** RBFNN has the best performance over the others with a 79.80%mean correlation coefficient over all joints,and its accuracy reaches as high as 92.67%in some ***,the highest accuracy over individual joints is 93.46%,which is achieved via the *** good accuracy suggests that the proposed approaches can be used as alternatives to the previously adopted ones and can be employed effectively to synchronously control multi-degrees of freedom HMI and for general multi-joint kinematics estimation purposes.

A shield of defense:Developing ballistic composite panels with effective electromagnetic interference shielding absorption

The primary goal of this study is to develop cost-effective shield materials that offer effective protection against high-velocity ballistic impact and electromagnetic interference(EMI)shielding capabilities through *** fiber-reinforced epoxy composite panels,each with a different fabric material and stacking sequence,have been fabricated using a hand-layup vacuum bagging *** panels made of Kevlar and glass fibers,referred to as(K-NIJ)and(G-NIJ),have been tested according to the National Institute of Justice ballistic resistance protective materials test NIJ 0108.01 Standard-Level IIIA(9 mm×19 mm FMJ 124 g)*** panels,namely,a hybrid of Kevlar and glass(H-S),glass with ceramic particles(C-S),and glass with recycled rubber(R-S)have been impacted by the bullet at the center,while the fourth panel made of glass fiber(G-S)has been impacted at the *** shielding properties have been measured in the X-band frequency range via the reflection-transmission *** indicate that four panels(K-NIJ,G-NIJ,H-S,and G-S)are capable of withstanding high-velocity impact by stopping the bullet from penetrating through the panels while maintaining their structural ***,under such conditions,these panels may experience localized delamination with variable *** EMI measurements reveal that the highest absorptivity observed is 88% for the KNIJ panel at 10.8 GHz,while all panels maintain an average absorptivity above 65%.All panels act as a lossy medium with a peak absorptivity at different frequencies,with K-NIJ and H-S panels demonstrating the highest *** summary,the study results in the development of a novel,costeffective,multifunctional glass fiber epoxy composite that combines ballistic and electromagnetic interference shielding *** material has been developed using a simple manufacturing method and exhibits remarkable ballistic protection that outperforms Kevlar in terms of shielding efficiency;no bullet

Effect of bond enhancement using carbon nanotubes on flexural behavior of RC beams strengthened with externally bonded CFRP sheets

This paper studied the effect of incorporation of carbon nanotubes(CNTs)in carbon fiber reinforced polymer(CFRP)on strengthening of reinforced concrete(RC)*** RC beams were prepared,strengthened in flexure by externally bonded CFRP or CNTs-modified CFRP sheets,and tested under four-point *** experimental results showed the ability of the CNTs to delay the initiation of the cracks and to enhance the flexural capacity of the beams strengthened with CFRP.A nonlinear finite element(FE)model was built,validated,and used to study the effect of various parameters on the strengthening efficiency of CNTs-modified *** studied parameters included concrete strength,flexural reinforcement ratio,and CFRP sheet *** numerical results showed that utilization of CNTs in CFRP production improved the flexural capacity of the strengthened beams for U-shape and underside-strip *** enhancement was more pronounced in the case of U-shape than in the case of use of sheet strip covers on the underside of the *** case of using underside-strip,the longer or the wider the sheet,the higher was the flexural capacity of the *** flexural enhancement of RC beams by strengthening with CNTs-modified CFRP decreased with increasing the rebar diameter and was not affected by concrete strength.

DC offset rejection in a frequency-fixed second-order generalized integrator-based phase-locked loop for single-phase grid-connected applications

Fast and accurate monitoring of the phase,amplitude,and frequency of the grid voltage is essential for single-phase grid-connected *** presence of DC offset in the grid voltage is detrimental to not only grid synchronization but also the closed-loop stability of the grid-connected *** this paper,a new synchronization method to mitigate the effect of DC offset is presented using arbitrarily delayed signal cancelation(ADSC)in a second-order generalized integrator(SOGI)phase-locked loop(PLL).A frequency-fixed SOGI-based PLL(FFSOGI-PLL)is adopted to ensure better stability and to reduce the complexity compared with other SOGI-based PLLs.A small-signal model of the proposed PLL is derived for the systematic design of proportional-integral(PI)controller *** effects of frequency variation and ADSC on the proposed PLL are considered,and correction methods are adopted to accurately estimate grid *** simulation results are presented,along with comparisons to other single-phase PLLs in terms of settling time,peak frequency,and phase error to validate the proposed *** dynamic performance of the proposed PLL is also experimentally ***,the proposed PLL has the fastest transient response and better dynamic performance than the other PLLs for almost all performance indices,offering an improved solution for precise grid synchronization in single-phase applications.

An Improved Reactive Power Sharing in an Isolated Microgrid with a Local Load Detection

Accurate reactive power sharing is one of the main issues in isolated microgrids to avoid circulating currents and overloading small distributed generation(DG)units.A simple and enhanced method for improving reactive power sharing among parallel-connected DG systems in an isolated microgrid was *** proposed method uses a compensator term with an integral action to minimize the reactive power-sharing error internally without any need for communication or information shared among the DG ***,a small disturbance carrying part of the reactive power-sharing error is injected into the active power-droop controller,maintaining the essential system parameters within their allowable ***,a simple compensation trigger system is proposed to effectively detect any local load change in the network and provide compensation gains to activate the proposed control *** stability of the proposed method was verified and analyzed using a detailed small-signal ***,the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method were validated through comprehensive simulation studies and comparisons with other related techniques.

With the expansive demand for video streaming over mobile networks,it is necessary to adopt schemes that balance the need for high video quality with the available network resources when streaming or downloading the *** approaches were proposed in the literature,including Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP(DASH).In this work,we consider an approach in which we place sufficient emphasis on the constrained battery resources in mobile devices when making decisions on the quality(or bitrate)of the video to be *** is done by using a fuzzy logic controller that enhances the performance of the Fuzzy-based DASH(FDASH)*** results show that our proposed approach conserves more energy than its predecessor while maintaining similar video quality and avoiding playback interruptions.

Evolutionary neural network(ENN)shows high performance in function optimization and in finding approximately global optima from searching large and complex *** is one of the most efficient and adaptive optimization techniques used widely to provide candidate solutions that lead to the fitness of the *** has the extraordinary ability to search the global and learning the approximate optimal solution regardless of the gradient information of the error ***,ENN requires high computation and processing which requires parallel processing platforms such as field programmable gate arrays(FPGAs)and graphic processing units(GPUs)to achieve a good *** work involves different new implementations of ENN by exploring and adopting different techniques and opportunities for parallel *** versions of ENN algorithm have also been implemented and parallelized on FPGAs platform for low latency by exploiting the parallelism and pipelining *** data form mass spectrometry data(MSD)application was tested to examine and verify our *** is a very important and extensive computation application which needs to search and find the optimal features(peaks)in MSD in order to distinguish cancer patients from control *** algorithm is also implemented and parallelized on single core and GPU platforms for comparison *** computation time of our optimized algorithm on FPGA and GPU has been improved by a factor of 6.75 and 6,respectively.

Rapid assessment for seismic vulnerability of low and medium rise infilled RC frame buildings

An indexing method for rapid evaluation of the seismic vulnerability of infi lled RC frame buildings in jordan is proposed. The method aims at identifying low and medium rise residential buildings as safe or in need of further detailed evaluation. Following a rapid visual screening, the building is assigned a Basic Capacity Index(BCI); fi ve performance modifi ers are identifi ed and multiplied by the BCI to arrive at the Capacity Index(CI) of the building. A Capacity Index lower than a limit CI value indicates that the screened building could experience moderate earthquake damage whereas a higher value implies that minor damage, if any, would take place. To establish the basic evaluation parameters; forty RC frame buildings were selected, designed and analyzed using static nonlinear analysis and incorporating the effect of infi ll walls. Effects of seismicity, local site conditions, horizontal irregularities(setbacks and re-entrant corners), vertical irregularities(soft story at ground fl oor level) and overhangs on the seismic performance of local buildings were examined. Assessment forms were designed and used to evaluate and rank 112 sample buildings. About 40% of the surveyed buildings were found to be in need of detailed evaluation to better defi ne their seismic vulnerabilities.

The enlarged veins in the pampiniform venous plexus,known as varicocele disease,are typically identified using ultrasound *** diagnosis of varicocele is based on examinations made in three positions taken to the right and left testicles of the male *** proposed system is designed to determine whether a patient is *** is more frequent on the left side of the scrotum than on the right and physicians commonly depend on the supine position more than other ***,the experimental results of this study focused on images taken in the supine position of the left testicles of *** are two possible vein structures in each image:a cross-section(circular)and a tube(non-circular)*** proposed system identifies dilated(varicocele)veins of these structures in ultrasound images in three stages:preprocessing,processing,and detection and *** three stages are applied in three different color modes:Grayscale,Red-Green-Blue(RGB),and Hue,Saturation,and Value(HSV).In the preprocessing stage,the region of interest enclosing the pampiniform plexus area is extracted using a median filter and threshold ***,the processing stage employs different filters to perform image ***,edge detection is applied in multiple steps and the detected veins are measured to determine if dilated veins *** implementation results showed the proposed system is faster andmore effective than the previous work.

Viscosity of aqueous ionic liquids analogues as a function of water content and temperature

Ionic liquids analogues known as Deep Eutectic Solvents （DESs） are gaining a surge of interest by the scientific community, and many applications involving DESs have been realized. Moisture content is one of the important factors that affects the physical and chemical characteristics of these fluids. In this work, the effect of mixing water with three common type III DESs on their viscosity was investigated within the water tool fraction range of （0-1） and at the temperature range （298.15-353.15 K）. Similar trends of viscosity variation with respect to molar composition and temperature were observed for the three studied systems, Due to the asymmetric geometry of the constituting molecules in these fluids, their viscosity could not be modeled effectively by the conventional Grunberg and Nissan model, and the Fang-He model was used to address this issue with excellent performance. All studied aqueous DES mixtures showed negative deviation in viscosity as compared to ideal mixtures, The degree of intermolecular interactions with water reaches a maximum at a composition of 30% aqueous DES solution. Reline, the most studied DES in the literature, showed the highest deviation. The informa- tion presented in this work on the viscosity of aqueous DES solutions may serve in tuning this important property for diverse industrial applications involving these novel fluids in fluid flow, chemical reactions, liquid-liquid separation and many more.
