The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic outbreak and the unfortunate misuse of toxic chemical warfare agents(CWAs)highlight the importance of developing functional materials to protect against these chemical and pathogen ***−organic frameworks(MOFs),which comprise a tunable class of crystalline porous materials built from inorganic nodes and organic linkers,have emerged as a class of heterogeneous catalysts capable of rapid detoxification of multiple classes of these harmful chemical or biological *** particular,zirconium-based MOFs(Zr-MOFs)feature Lewis acidic nodes that serve as active sites for a wide range of catalytic reactions,including the hydrolysis of organophosphorus nerve agents within seconds in basic aqueous *** addition,postsynthetic modification of Zr-MOFs enables the release of active species capable of reacting with and deactivating harmful *** this impressive performance,utilizing Zr-MOFs in powder form is not practical for application in masks or protective *** address this challenge,our team sought to develop MOF/fiber composite systems that could be adapted for use under realistic operating conditions to protect civilians,military personnel,and first responders from harmful pathogens and chemical warfare *** the last several years,our group has designed and fabricated reactive and biocidal MOF/fiber composites that effectively capture and deactivate these toxic *** this Account,we describe the evolution of these porous and reactive MOF/fiber composites and focus on key design challenges and ***,we devised a scalable method for the integration of Zr-MOFs onto textile substrates using aqueous precursor solutions and without using pretreated textiles,highlighting the potential scalability of this *** beyond standard textiles,we also developed a microbial synthesis strategy to prepare hierarchically porous MOF/bacterial cellulose nanofiber composite sponges that can both captu

Mechanical Properties of Iron Ore Tailings Filled-Polypropylene composites

Iron ore tailings filled polypropylene (PP) composites were produced using the compo-indirect squeeze casting (C-ISC) process. Particle sizes 150, 212 and 300 μm where considered for different volume fractions of 5% to 30% at intervals of 5%. The tensile and impact behavior of the produced composites were investigated, experimentally, by carrying out uniaxial tensile and izod impact tests to obtain tensile strength, elongation at break, modulus of elasticity and impact strength. Empirical data were compared with results obtained from models proposed by Nielsen, Bigg and Einstein. The experimental results show that elongation at break for iron ore tailings filled PP reduces with increasing 150 μm particle size. Tensile strength reduces with increasing filler. The Bigg equation exhibited improved predictability with decreasing particle size of filler in PP;while the Einstein equation which assumes poor adhesion gives the best prediction of modulus of elasticity with increasing particle size in PP. Izod impact strength decreases with particle size but increases with increasing volume content of iron ore tailings from 5% to 25% for each particle size considered.

Optimization of Supercritical Fluid Extraction of Tea Flower Polysaccharides by Using Response Surface Method

Polysaccharide production from tea flower(TFPS) was carried out using supercritical fluid extraction(SFE).Response surface methodology(RSM),based on a five level,four variable small central composite design,was employed to obtain the best possible combination of extraction time,pressure,temperature and ethanol content of modifier for maximum *** optimum conditions were as follows:extraction time of 170 min,pressure of45 MPa,temperature of 75 ℃,and 50% aqueous ethanol solution as *** these conditions,the experimental yield was 6.56 ± 0.37%,which was similar to the value predicted by the *** composition of TFPS was fucose,rhamnose,arabinose,xylose,galactose,glucose,mannose,fructose,ribose,galacturonic acid and glucuronic acid in a molar percent of 31.69,0.21,0.49,1.29,35.82,0.97,1.63,18.34,7.88,1.06 and *** to other extraction methods,SFE could achieve higher yield and gain more types of monosaccharide.

Wood flour or sawdust is often used as filler in conventional wood plastic composite(WPC)***,there has been an increasing interest to the use of wood pulp fibres in reinforced plastic applications,because they can provide enhanced strength properties and better biodegradability characteristics for the *** research compares the effect of recycled fibres or side streams of paper as reinforcement in poly(lactic acid)(PLA)or polypropylene(PP)*** from liquid packaging board and non-deinked old newspapers,and fibrous sludge from recycling processes are compared with virgin softwood kraft pulp *** were produced by melt processing to a fibre content of 30%(or 10%fibrous sludge),and the mechanical properties were *** fibres provided comparable,or even higher,plastic reinforcement than virgin softwood *** PP composites,the differences in mechanical properties between different fibre types were relatively *** sludge decreased the mechanical performance of composites but can be considered as cheap filler in cases when mechanical properties are not *** possibility to use low-cost materials like recovered paper or deinking sludge in wood plastic composites is an interesting option for future sustainable applications.

Biochar Supported Nanoscale Zero-valent Iron composites for the Removal of Petroleum from Wastewater

Considering the need for efficiently and rapidly treating oily wastewater while preventing secondary pollution,the nanoscale zero-valent iron(nZVI)was supported on biochar prepared by using a spent mushroom substrate(SMS),to produce an iron-carbon composite(SMS-nZVI).The ability of the SMS-nZVI to treat wastewater containing high concentration of oil was then comprehensively *** morphology,structure,and other properties of the composite were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy,transmission electron microscopy,the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller nitrogen sorption analysis,and the Fourier transform infrared *** results show that the biochar prepared by using the SMS can effectively prevent the agglomeration of nZVI and increase the overall specific surface area,thereby enhancing the absorption of petroleum by the *** reveal that compared with the SMS and nZVI,the SMS-nZVI composite removes petroleum faster and more efficiently from *** optimized conditions involving an nZVI to biochar mass ratio of 1:5 and a pH value of 4,the efficiency for removal of petroleum from wastewater with an initial petroleum concentration of 1000 mg/L could reach 95%within 5 *** on a natural aging treatment involving exposure to air for 30 d,the SMS-nZVI composite retained an oil removal rate of higher than 62%,and this result could highlight its stability for practical applications.

The pathway of the interdecadal variability in the Pacific Ocean

Cases of the interdecadal variability in the Pacific Ocean and their evolution were examined in the paper with the statistic methods (CEOF and composite analysis) over the period of 1950-1993. Observations of oceanic temperatures in the upper 400 m revealed an obvious region of the interdecadal signals in the central North Pacific. Such signals propagated south westward, then subducted to the subtropics. The hypothesized link for interdecadal oceanic variability between the subtropics and the tropics, especially with the western tropical Pacific was unraveled in order to detect the cause of decadal signals in the tropics. The thermal anomalies subducted in the central North Pacific east to the dateline only reach 18°N. There has been no further southward propagation since then due to a certain barrier. The origin of the interdecadal signals in the western tropical Pacific was traced to the southern tropical Pacific. There is a meridional pathway around the dateline where the signals were loaded.

Graphene oxide is a very high capacity adsorbent due to its functional groups and π-π interactions with other compounds. Adsorption capacity of graphene oxide, however, can be further enhanced by having synergistic effects through the use of mixed-matrix composite. In this study, silica-decorated graphene oxide(SGO) was used as a high-efficiency adsorbent to remove Congo red(CR) and Cadmium(Ⅱ) from aqueous solutions. The effects of solution initial concentration(20 to 120 mg/l), solution pH(pH 2 to 7), adsorption duration(0 to 140 min) and temperature(298 to 323 K) were measured in order to optimize the adsorption conditions using the SGO adsorbent. Morphological analysis indicated that the silica nanoparticles could be dispersed uniformly on the graphene oxide surfaces. The maximum capacities of adsorbent for effective removal of Cd(Ⅱ) and CR were 43.45 and 333.33 mg/g based on Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms, respectively. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms displayed the highest values of Q max for CR and Cd(Ⅱ) adsorption in this study, which indicated monolayer adsorption of CR and multilayer adsorption of Cd(II) onto the SGO, respectively. Thermodynamic study showed that the enthalpy( H) and Gibbs free energy( G) values of the adsorption process for both pollutants were negative, suggesting that the process was spontaneous and exothermic in nature. This study showed active sites of SGO( π-π, hydroxyl, carboxyl, ketone, silane-based functional groups) contributed to an enormous enhancement in simultaneous removal of CR and Cd(Ⅱ) from an aqueous solu-tion, Therefore, SGO can be considered as a promising adsorbent for future water pollution control and removal of hazardous materials from aqueous solutions.

Effective viscoelastic behavior of particulate polymer composites at finite concentration

Polymeric materials usually present some viscoelastic behavior. To improve the mechanical behavior of these materials, ceramics materials are often filled into the polymeric materials in form of fiber or particle. A micromechanical model was proposed to estimate the overall viscoelastic behavior for particulate polymer composites, especially for high volume concentration of filled particles. The method is based on Laplace transform technique and an elastic model including two-particle interaction. The effective creep compliance and the stress and strain relation at a constant loading rate are analyzed. The results show that the proposed method predicts a significant stiffer response than those based on Mori-Tanaka＇s method at high volume concentration of particles.
