Impact of short-term ambient air pollution exposure on the risk of severe COVID-19

Ecological studies suggested a link between air pollution and severe COVID-19 outcomes,while studies accounting for individual-level characteristics are *** the present study,we aimed to investigate the impact of short-term ambient air pollution exposure on disease severity among a cohort of 569 laboratory confirmed COVID-19 patients admitted to designated hospitals in Zhejiang province,China,from January 17 to March 3,2020,and elucidate the possible biological processes involved using *** with mild cases,severe cases had higher proportion of medical conditions as well as unfavorable results in most of the laboratory tests,and manifested higher air pollution exposure *** exposure to air pollutants was associated with increased risk of severe COVID-19 with odds ratio(OR)of 1.89(95%confidence interval(CI):1.01,3.53),2.35(95%CI:1.20,4.61),2.87(95%CI:1.68,4.91),and 2.01(95%CI:1.10,3.69)for PM_(2.5),PM_(10),NO_(2)and CO,*** for NO_(2)remained significant in two-pollutant models after adjusting for other *** analysis showed 884 differentially expressed genes which mainly were enriched in virus clearance related biological processes between patients with high and low NO_(2)exposure levels,indicating that compromised immune response might be a potential underlying mechanistic *** findings highlight the impact of shortterm air pollution exposure,particularly for NO_(2),on COVID-19 severity,and emphasize the significance in mitigating the COVID-19 burden of commitments to improve air quality.

Metadherin-driven promotion of cancer stem cell phenotypes and its effect on immunity in hepatocellular carcinoma

In this editorial we provide commentary on the article published by Wang et al,featured in the recent issue of the World Journal of Gastroenterology in *** focus on the metadherin(MTDH),also known as astrocyte elevated gene-1 or lysine rich CEACAM1,and its effects on cancer stem cells(CSCs)and immunity in hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).HCC is the most common primary liver cancer and one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths *** HCC cases develop in the context of liver *** the pivotal mechanisms of carcinogenesis are gene mutations,dysregulation of diverse signaling pathways,epigenetic alterations,hepatitis B virus-induced hepatocarcinogenesis,chronic inflammation,impact of tumor microenvironment,oxidative *** the years,extensive research has been conducted on the MTDH role in various tumor pathologies,such as lung,breast,ovarian,gastric,hepatocellular,colorectal,renal carcinoma,neuroblastoma,melanoma,and ***,its involvement in tumor development processes including transformation,apoptosis evasion,angiogenesis,invasion,and metastasis via multiple signaling *** has been demonstrated that knockdown or knockout of MTDH disrupt tumor development and *** addition,numerous reports have been carried out regarding the MTDH influence on HCC,demonstrating its role as a predictor of poor prognosis,aggressive tumor phenotypes prone to metastasis and recurrence,and exhibiting significant potential for therapy ***,more studies finely investigated the influence of MTDH on *** CSCs are a small subpopulation of tumor cells that sharing traits with normal stem cells like self-renewal and differentiation abilities,alongside a high plasticity that alters their *** their presumed role in tumor initiation,they can drive also disease relapse,metastasis,and resistance to chemo and radiotherapy.

Treg Immunomodulation Contributes to the Anti-atherosclerotic Effects of Huxin Formula in ApoE-/- Mice

Objective: To explore the effects of Huxin formula（HXF） in curtailing atherosclerosis and its underlying mechanism. Methods: According to random number table method, 24 specific pathogen free male ApoE-/-mice were randomly divided into model group, HXF low-dose（HXF-L） group（8.4 g/kg daily）, HXF high-dose（HXF-H） group（16.8 g/kg daily）, and pravastatin（8 mg/kg daily） group in Experiment Ⅰ（n=6 per group）. C57BL/6J mice served as the control group（n=6）. ApoE-/-mice in HXF-L, HXF-H, pravastatin groups were fed a Western diet and administered continuously by gavage for 12 weeks, while C57BL/6J mice in the control group were fed conventional lab mouse chow for 12 weeks. Further, Tregs were depleted by weekly intraperitoneal injection of purified anti-mouse CD25 antibody（PC61, 250 μg per mouse） for 4 weeks in Experiment Ⅱ（n=6 per group）. Oil Red O and Masson staining were used to evaluate the plaque area and aortic root fibrosis. The CD4+CD25+Foxp3+Treg counts in the lymph nodes and spleen cells were detected using flow cytometric analysis. The transforming growth factor-β1（TGF-β1）, interleukin（IL）-10, and IL-6 serum levels were examined by MILLIPLEX?MAP technology. Quantitative real-time reverse transcription PCR（qRT-PCR） and Western blot were utilized to assess the expression of TGF-β mRNA and protein in the aorta. The expression of CD4+T lymphocytes, macrophages and smooth muscle cells in the aortic root were detected by immunofluorescence staining. Results: HXF reduced plaque area in ApoE-/-mice（P0.05）. Also, HXF upregulated the expression of TGF-β mRNA and protein in the aorta（P<0.05）. Additionally, HXF attenuated CD4+T lymphocytes, macrophages and smooth muscle cells in aortic root plaque（P<0.01）. Association of prealbumin with short-term and long-term outcomes in patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction

BACKGROUND Prealbumin is considered to be a useful indicator of nutritional status. Furthermore, it has been found to be associated with severities and prognosis of a range of diseases. However, limited data on the association of baseline prealbumin level with outcomes of patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction(STEMI) are *** We analyzed 2313 patients admitted for acute STEMI between October 2013 and December 2020. In-hospital outcomes and mortality during the 49 months(interquartile range: 26–73 months) follow-up period were compared between patients with the low prealbumin level(< 170 mg/L) and those with the high prealbumin level(≥ 170 mg/L).RESULTS A total of 114 patients(4.9%) died during hospitalization. After propensity score matching, patients with the low prealbumin level than those with the high prealbumin level experienced higher incidences of heart failure with Killip class Ⅲ(9.9%vs. 4.4%, P = 0.034), cardiovascular death(8.4% vs. 3.4%, P = 0.035) and the composite of major adverse cardiovascular events(19.2%vs. 10.3%, P = 0.012). Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified that the low prealbumin level(< 170 mg/L) was an independent predictor of in-hospital major adverse cardiovascular events(odds ratio = 1.918, 95% CI: 1.250–2.942, P = 0.003). The cutoff value of prealbumin level for predicting in-hospital death was 170 mg/L(area under the curve = 0.703, 95% CI: 0.651–0.754, P< 0.001;sensitivity = 0.544, specificity = 0.794). However, after multivariate adjustment of possible confounders, baseline prealbumin level(170 mg/L) was no longer independently associated with 49-month cardiovascular death.
