Concordance among indices of intrinsic brain function： Insights from inter-individual variation and temporal dynamics

Various resting-state fMRI(R-fMRI) measures have been developed to characterize intrinsic brain activity. While each of these measures has gained a growing presence in the literature, questions remain regarding the common and unique aspects these indices capture. The present work provided a comprehensive examination of inter-individual variation and intra-individual temporal variation for commonly used measures, including fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuations, regional homogeneity,voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity, network centrality and global signal correlation. Regardless of whether examining intra-individual or inter-individual variation, we found that these definitionally distinct R-fMRI indices tend to exhibit a relatively high degree of covariation, which doesn't exist in phase randomized surrogate data. As a measure of intrinsic brain function, concordance for R-fMRI indices was negatively correlated with age across individuals(i.e., concordance among functional indices decreased with age). To understand the functional significance of concordance, we noted that higher concordance was generally associated with higher strengths of R-fMRI indices, regardless of whether looking through the lens of inter-individual(i.e., high vs. low concordance participants) or intra-individual(i.e., high *** concordance states identified via temporal dynamic analyses) differences. We also noted a linear increase in functional concordance together with the R-fMRI indices through the scan, which may suggest a decrease in arousal. The current study demonstrated an enriched picture regarding the relationship among the R-fMRI indices, as well as provided new insights in examining dynamic states within and between individuals.

＜正＞Background Study aim was to investigate impact of psychiatric comorbidity on quality of life（QoL） in epileptic adolescents. Methods Forty-two epileptic adolescents（52.1%female;mean age 15.3±1.7 years） with min.1 seizure in the past 2 years were included. Severity of epilepsy（clinical Global Impression- Severity;CGI-S）,psychiatric comorbidity（DSM-IV psychiatric interview and Brief Symptom Inventory;BSI） and QoL（Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory - child and Parents Report;PedsQL） were assessed.

Stabilization of Circadian Rhythm, Its Augmentation by Bright Light Treatment and Its Importance for ADHD and Depression of adolescents

Objective: ADHD is characterized by the progressive development of, impulsiveness, attentional difficulties and sometimes also excessive hyperactivity. Main biological reason is a quantitative reduction of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the forebrain. A lack of dopamine is also typical for depressive disorders. Methods: Bright light therapy is proven to be effective in treating depression. Purpose of our study is to verify the therapeutic effectiveness of Bright light therapy in subjects affected by ADHD. Results: Results show a significant improvement which lasts for at least 4 weeks, which is superposed by regulation of the circadian rhythm. Initial decrease of especially morning saliva melatonin levels, due to regular sleep under in-patient conditions, is followed by symptom improvement and a raising evening melatonin level, due to activation during the day. This level decreases as soon as activation is ceased. Conclusion: Bright light therapy seems to be effective as add-on therapy for ADHD, but in fact, stabilization of the circadian rhythm is the most important therapeutic intervention, either for ADHD or for depression, as demonstrated in another study.

Prevalence of vitreous floaters in a community sample of smartphone users

AIM: To estimate the prevalence and risk factors for vitreous floaters in the general population. ·METHODS: An electronic survey was administered through a smartphone app asking various demographic and health questions, including whether users experience floaters in their field of vision. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine risk factors. ·RESULTS: A total of 603 individuals completed the survey, with 76% reporting that they see floaters, and 33% reporting that floaters caused noticeable impairment in vision. Myopes were 3.5 times more likely (P =0.0004), and hyperopes 4.4 times more likely (P =0.0069) to report moderate to severe floaters compared to those with normal vision. Floater prevalence was not significantly affected by respondent age, race, gender, and eye color. ·CONCLUSION: Vitreous floaters were found to be a very common phenomenon in this non -clinical general population sample, and more likely to be impairing in myopes and hyperopes.

Background:There is limited evidence of the effects of local anesthesia(LA)on outcomes of non-surgical periodontal treatment(NSPT),in particular among the *** retrospective cohort study aimed to evaluate the effects of LA on short-term treatment outcomes of NSPT and to determine under what circumstances LA should be prescribed to improve these ***:Data from periodontal examinations of 3980 patients were *** data were from 3-month re-evaluation records of an electronic periodontal charting record system in the department of Periodontology of Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology from June 2008 to January *** analyses included changes in probing depth(PD)and the Mazza bleeding index(BI).Two-level(patient and tooth)logistic regression models and three-level(patient,tooth,and site)linear regression models were constructed to analyze the influence of LA on PD for all teeth/sites and teeth/sites with an initial PD≥5 *** in PD and BI at sites under LA using the initial PD were also ***:A significantly higher mean decrease in PD after NSPT was found in the LA group than in the no local anesthesia(NLA)group(0.98 vs.0.54 mm,t=24.12,P1 and BI>2)for all teeth(16.7%vs.13.8%,t=3.75,P<0.001;34.7%vs.28.1%,t=6.73,P<0.001)and PD for teeth with PD≥5mm(32.3%vs.17.3%,t=28.48,P<0.001).The difference in PD between the LA and NLA groups increased as the initial PD *** difference between the two groups was 0.12 to 0.22 mm for sites with a baseline PD<7 mm;however,it increased to 0.41 to 1.37 mm for sites with a baseline PD≥7 ***:LA improved the decrease in PD after *** debridement at sites with initial PD≥7 mm should be performed under routine LA.
