Behavior of Pile Group with Elevated Cap Subjected to Cyclic Lateral Loads

The pile group with elevated cap is widely used as foundation of offshore structures such as turbines, power transmission towers and bridge piers, and understanding its behavior under cyclic lateral loads induced by waves, tide water and winds, is of great importance to designing. A large-scale model test on 3×3 pile group with elevated cap subjected to cyclic lateral loads was performed in saturated silts. The preparation and implementation of the test is presented. Steel pipes with the outer diameter of 114 mm, thickness of 4.5 mm, and length of 6 m were employed as model piles. The pile group was cyclic loaded in a multi-stage sequence with the lateral displacement controlled. In addition, a single pile test was also conducted at the same site for comparison. The displacement of the pile cap, the internal forces of individual piles, and the horizontal stiffness of the pile group are presented and discussed in detail. The results indicate that the lateral cyclic loads have a greater impact on pile group than that on a single pile, and give rise to the significant plastic strain in the soil around piles. The lateral loads carried by each row of piles within the group would be redistributed with loading cycles. The lateral stiffness of the pile group decreases gradually with cycles and broadly presents three different degradation patterns in the test. Significant axial forces were measured out in some piles within the group, owing to the strong restraint provided by the cap, and finally lead to a large settlement of the pile group. These findings can be referred for foundation designing of offshore structures.

Performance of Slope Behavior Indicators in Unsaturated Pyroclastic Soils

Landslide risk is increasing in many parts of the world due to growth of population and infrastructures. Therefore, an effort has to be made in developing new and cheap sensors for areas susceptible of landslides to continuously control the slope behaviour, until approaching failure conditions. The paper reported experimental data from smallscale physical models about the performance of Time Domain Reflectometry(TDR) and optical fibres, which act as the indicators of the incoming failure of slopes covered by unsaturated granular soils. Obtained results appear encouraging, since both sensors provide continuous information about the state of the slope, in terms of water content profiles and ongoing deformations, induced by rainwater infiltration, even immediately before the triggering of a fast landslide.

Formation and reactivation mechanisms of large-scale ancient landslides in the Longwu River basin in the northeast Tibetan Plateau, China

The northeastern Tibetan Plateau exhibits steep topography and strong internal or external dynamic geological effect and is frequently subjected to strong earthquakes and heavy rainfall. The geological evolution has resulted in a wide distribution of ancient landslides, which has become a hotspot for studying ancient landslide formation and reactivation. In recent decades, several ancient landslides on both banks of the Longwu River, Qinghai Province, China were reactivated, causing serious economic losses and casualties. This study conducted remote sensing interpretation and ground surveys on these ancient landslides. Totally 59 ancient landslides were identified, and the formation mechanism, evolution process, and resurrection mechanism of the Longwu Xishan No.2 ancient landslide were analyzed by means of a detailed field geological survey, drilling, and series of experimental tests such as the particle size distribution test, the Xray diffraction test and the mechanical properties test. The results show that the formation of these ancient landslides is closely associated with the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau and the erosion of the Longwu River. Firstly, the intermittent uplift of the Tibetan Plateau lead to the diversion and downcutting of the Longwu River basin, which forms the alternate slope topography with steep and slow slopes, thereby providing favourable topography and slope structure conditions for the formation of landslides. Secondly, 34.5% clay-mineral content in the Neoproterozoic mudstone with 32.7% particle size less than 0.005 mm, and the corrosion and softening effects of the Neogene mudstone with high clay mineral content under the erosion of water provides favourable material conditions for the formation of landslides. Thirdly, rainfall and human activities are the primary triggering factors for the revival of this ancient landslide group. Determination of a Mathematical Model of Erosion Taking into Account the Intensity of Rainfall and Soil Slopes from the Global MNT Model

Our study is being carried out in the Wouri Estuary more precisely in the Nylon area, Douala. This area is influenced by abundant rainfall which promotes the phenomenon of rain erosion. This erosion contributes to the degradation of structures and soils. To better understand and predict this phenomenon of rainfall erosion, we set out to establish a mathematical model that takes into account precipitation and topography. To this end, the data collected in the field and in the laboratory made it possible. First, we graphically modeled the variation of the potential as a function of the intensity of rainfall and the slope of the ground. Next, we identified a mathematical model from cubic spline surface interpolation. Finally, we obtained the mathematical model which makes it possible to evaluate and predict the erosion potential. The results obtained allowed to have an erosion potential of 153.67 t/ha/year with field data and 153.94 t/ha/year with laboratory data. We compared the results obtained with those existing in the literature on the same study site. This comparison made it possible to validate the established mathematical model. This mathematical model is a decision support tool and can predict problems related to water, erosion and the environment.

Theoretical Analysis of Annular Elliptic Finned Tube Evaporative Condenser Based on Field Measurement

In this article,a new evaporative condenser with an annular elliptic firmed tube heat exchanger that includes a round inner tube and elliptic outer finned tube was designed and *** refrigerant flows between the round inner tube and the elliptic outer tube,and it simultaneously exchanges heat with the cooling water in the inner tube,the spray water,and the cooling air flowing past the outer *** field measurement for the traditional round finned tube evaporative condenser in the Futong Metro Station of Line 14 in Beijing,China,the theoretical heat transfer performance of the annular elliptic finned tube evaporative condenser was analyzed and *** with a round finned tube heat exchanger,the heat exchange capacity of the annular elliptic finned tube increased by 2.34%to 9.28%;the total heat transfer coefficient increased by 47.42%,and the power consumption of the fan in the air-conditioning system with an annular elliptic finned tube heat exchanger decreased by 11.18%to 14.65%.Therefore,the energy-saving performance and the heat transfer performance of the new annular elliptic finned tube heat exchanger were enhanced compared to the round finned tube heat exchanger.

Effects of different freshwater flux representations in an ocean general circulation model of the tropical Pacific

Freshwater flux(FWF) is a major forcing that affects the ocean through several processes. The effects of FWF may be represented in ocean modeling as real freshwater flux(RFF) formulations and virtual salt flux(VSF) methods. RFF formulations have been implemented in the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory(GFDL) Modular Ocean Model version 5(MOM5) as a replacement for the non-physical VSF method, which is primarily used in state-of-the-art ocean models. Here, we systematically evaluated the effects of RFF-related processes on the GFDL MOM5-based simulations in the tropical *** the FWF was treated as the natural boundary condition(NBC), it directly decreased the local temperature and the salinity by changing the volume of the top model layer, and it increased the temperature in the eastern Pacific by triggering an eastward Goldsbrough–Stommel circulation in the ***, the heat content induced by the FWF tended to counteract the decreasing effects of the NBC on sea surface temperatures(SSTs) in the western-central tropical Pacific. The relationships between SST perturbations and the FWF representation in ocean modeling are also discussed.

Tensile Deformation Properties of Corrugated Style Fiber Reinforced Composite Skin for a Morphing Wing

A type of skin structure which is made by a Circular Arc Corrugated Style Fiber Reinforced Composite （CACSFRC） is proposed to meet the requirements of the large and continuous deformation and high load capacity of a morphing wing skin. A mechanical model is developed to predict the tensile deformation properties and equiva- lent elastic modulus of the composite skin. Corrugated and plane skin samples are manufactured and tested. The theoretical analysis and tension tests show that CCSFRC skin has markedly much more tensile deforming capability than plane skin in the range of elasticity. The quantity of tensile deformation is in direct proportion to the number of ripples, and in inverse proportion to the cubic of ratio thickness, while the equivalent elastic modulus is in direct proportion to the cubic of ratio thickness approximately. Experiments prove that the predicted theoretical models are reliable and effective.
