Impact of climate change and human activities on the spatiotemporal dynamics of surface water area in Gansu Province, China

Understanding the dynamics of surface water area and their drivers is crucial for human survival and ecosystem stability in inland arid and semi-arid areas.This study took Gansu Province,China,a typical area with complex terrain and variable climate,as the research subject.Based on Google Earth Engine,we used Landsat data and the Open-surface Water Detection Method with Enhanced Impurity Control method to monitor the spatiotemporal dynamics of surface water area in Gansu Province from 1985 to 2022,and quantitatively analyzed the main causes of regional differences in surface water area.The findings revealed that surface water area in Gansu Province expanded by 406.88 km2 from 1985 to 2022.Seasonal surface water area exhibited significant fluctuations,while permanent surface water area showed a steady increase.Notably,terrestrial water storage exhibited a trend of first decreasing and then increasing,correlated with the dynamics of surface water area.Climate change and human activities jointly affected surface hydrological processes,with the impact of climate change being slightly higher than that of human activities.Spatially,climate change affected the'source'of surface water to a greater extent,while human activities tended to affect the'destination'of surface water.Challenges of surface water resources faced by inland arid and semi-arid areas like Gansu Province are multifaceted.Therefore,we summarized the surface hydrology patterns typical in inland arid and semi-arid areas and tailored surface water'supply-demand'balance strategies.The study not only sheds light on the dynamics of surface water area in Gansu Province,but also offers valuable insights for ecological protection and surface water resource management in inland arid and semi-arid areas facing water scarcity.

Alzheimer’s disease is a debilitating,progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the progressive accumulation of abnormal proteins,including amyloid plaques and intracellular tau tangles,primarily within the brain.Lysosomes,crucial intracellular organelles responsible for protein degradation,play a key role in maintaining cellular homeostasis.Some studies have suggested a link between the dysregulation of the lysosomal system and pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases,including Alzheimer’s disease.Restoring the normal physiological function of lysosomes hold the potential to reduce the pathological burden and improve the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.Currently,the efficacy of drugs in treating Alzheimer’s disease is limited,with major challenges in drug delivery efficiency and targeting.Recently,nanomaterials have gained widespread use in Alzheimer’s disease drug research owing to their favorable physical and chemical properties.This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of recent advances in using nanomaterials(polymeric nanomaterials,nanoemulsions,and carbon-based nanomaterials)to enhance lysosomal function in treating Alzheimer’s disease.This review also explores new concepts and potential therapeutic strategies for Alzheimer’s disease through the integration of nanomaterials and modulation of lysosomal function.In conclusion,this review emphasizes the potential of nanomaterials in modulating lysosomal function to improve the pathological features of Alzheimer’s disease.The application of nanotechnology to the development of Alzheimer’s disease drugs brings new ideas and approaches for future treatment of this disease.

With the loss of substantial natural wetlands in coastal zones,artificial wetlands provide alternative habitats for many shorebirds.Scientific management of artificial wetlands used by shorebirds plays an important role in maintaining the stability of shorebird population.Satellite tracking technique can obtain high-precision location information of individuals day and night,providing a good technical support for the study of quantitative relationship between waterfowls and their habitats.In this study,satellite tracking method,Remote Sensing(RS)and Geographic Information System(GIS)technology were used to analyze the activity pattern and habitat utilization characteristics of Pied Avocet during breeding period in an artificial wetland complex in the Yellow River Delta(YRD),China.The results showed that the breeding Pied Avocets had a small range of activity,with a total core and main home range of 33.10 km^(2) and 216.30 km^(2),respectively.This species tended to forage in the pond and salt pan during the day and night,respectively,with an unfixed staying time in the breeding ground.The distance between breeding ground and feeding ground was less than 6 km.It is emphasized that in addition to improving the conditions of the remaining natural habitats,effective managing artificial habitats is a priority for shorebird conservation.This research could provide reference for the management of artificial wetlands in coastal zones and supply technique support for the protection of shorebirds and their habitats,and alleviate human-bird conflicts and sustainable development of coastal zones.

Synthetic polymers:A review of applications in drilling fluids

With the growth of deep drilling and the complexity of the well profile,the requirements for a more complete and efficient exploitation of productive formations increase,which increases the risk of various complications.Currently,reagents based on modified natural polymers(which are naturally occurring compounds)and synthetic polymers(SPs)which are polymeric compounds created industrially,are widely used to prevent emerging complications in the drilling process.However,compared to modified natural polymers,SPs form a family of high-molecular-weight compounds that are fully synthesized by undergoing chemical polymerization reactions.SPs provide substantial flexibility in their design.Moreover,their size and chemical composition can be adjusted to provide properties for nearly all the functional objectives of drilling fluids.They can be classified based on chemical ingredients,type of reaction,and their responses to heating.However,some of SPs,due to their structural characteristics,have a high cost,a poor temperature and salt resistance in drilling fluids,and degradation begins when the temperature reaches 130℃.These drawbacks prevent SP use in some medium and deep wells.Thus,this review addresses the historical development,the characteristics,manufacturing methods,classification,and the applications of SPs in drilling fluids.The contributions of SPs as additives to drilling fluids to enhance rheology,filtrate generation,carrying of cuttings,fluid lubricity,and clay/shale stability are explained in detail.The mechanisms,impacts,and advances achieved when SPs are added to drilling fluids are also described.The typical challenges encountered by SPs when deployed in drilling fluids and their advantages and drawbacks are also discussed.Economic issues also impact the applications of SPs in drilling fluids.Consequently,the cost of the most relevant SPs,and the monomers used in their synthesis,are assessed.environmental impacts of SPs when deployed in drilling fluids,and their manufacturing processes are identified,toge

Neuroprotective effects of chaperone-mediated autophagy in neurodegenerative diseases

Chaperone-mediated autophagy is one of three types of autophagy and is characterized by the selective degradation of proteins. Chaperone-mediated autophagy contributes to energy balance and helps maintain cellular homeostasis, while providing nutrients and support for cell survival. Chaperone-mediated autophagy activity can be detected in almost all cells, including neurons. Owing to the extreme sensitivity of neurons to their environmental changes, maintaining neuronal homeostasis is critical for neuronal growth and survival. Chaperone-mediated autophagy dysfunction is closely related to central nervous system diseases. It has been shown that neuronal damage and cell death are accompanied by chaperone-mediated autophagy dysfunction. Under certain conditions, regulation of chaperone-mediated autophagy activity attenuates neurotoxicity. In this paper, we review the changes in chaperone-mediated autophagy in neurodegenerative diseases, brain injury, glioma, and autoimmune diseases. We also summarize the most recent research progress on chaperone-mediated autophagy regulation and discuss the potential of chaperone-mediated autophagy as a therapeutic target for central nervous system diseases.

Detector has become an indispensable part of human beings.The increasing demand for photodetectors with high performance has promoted the research of novel materials.At the same time,with the development of rising material system,two-dimensional（2D） materials attract a lot of attention,while the suitable option for fabricating photodetector is still limited.The prospering of bismuth chalcogenides injected new vitality for material field,thereinto,the unique topological insulator characteristics make the research on bismuth selenide（Bi2Se3） and bismuth telluride（Bi2Te3） intriguing.2D Bi2X3also exhibits unique features among various 2D materials,of which,the adjustable narrow energy band gap and polarization-sensitive photocurrent contribute to the promising application of high performance and broadband photodetector.In this review,from a bottom-up perspective,we summarize fundamental properties,synthesis method,photodetector performance of 2D Bi2X3based on the previous study,which provide an overall perspective of 2D Bi2X3.Wherein,the section of the photodetector is specifically discu ssed with regard to pure Bi2X3photodetector and heterojunction photodetector.A brief summary and outlook were also explored in the end.

Recent developments in Computer Vision have presented novel opportunities to tackle complex healthcare issues,particularly in the field of lung disease diagnosis.One promising avenue involves the use of chest X-Rays,which are commonly utilized in radiology.To fully exploit their potential,researchers have suggested utilizing deep learning methods to construct computer-aided diagnostic systems.However,constructing and compressing these systems presents a significant challenge,as it relies heavily on the expertise of data scientists.To tackle this issue,we propose an automated approach that utilizes an evolutionary algorithm(EA)to optimize the design and compression of a convolutional neural network(CNN)for X-Ray image classification.Our approach accurately classifies radiography images and detects potential chest abnormalities and infections,including COVID-19.Furthermore,our approach incorporates transfer learning,where a pre-trainedCNNmodel on a vast dataset of chest X-Ray images is fine-tuned for the specific task of detecting COVID-19.This method can help reduce the amount of labeled data required for the task and enhance the overall performance of the model.We have validated our method via a series of experiments against state-of-the-art architectures.

The use of antibiotics in humans and animals has been marked as a significant step in health due to their effectiveness in controlling and treating bacterial infections. The misuse and overuse of antibiotics have been identified as risk factors for bacterial resistance since microorganisms adapt and develop mechanisms to defend against antibiotics. According to the Centers for Disease Protection and Control (CDC), around 23,000 individuals die every year in the United States due to antibiotic resistance complications. As a result, a demand for alternative treatments has been a goal for scientists as the microbes adapt to selective pressure. The aim of this study is to test the antibacterial activity of leaf extracts of Peganum harmala and Haloxylon salicornicum on both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria on various mediums. The results of the study showed that both P. harmala and H. salicornicum inhibited the bacterial growth in two different media. The results were also compared with different common antibiotics used in both human’s and animal’s fields and showed a promising outcome as alternative antibiotics.

Zinc finger protein 831 promotes apoptosis and enhances chemosensitivity in breast cancer by acting as a novel transcriptional repressor targeting the STAT3/Bcl2 signaling pathway

Emerging evidence suggested that zinc finger protein 831(ZNF831)was associated with immune activity and stem cell regulation in breast cancer.Whereas,the roles and molec-ular mechanisms of ZNF831 in oncogenesis remain unclear.ZNF831 expression was significantly diminished in breast cancer which was associated with promoter CpG methylation but not mu-tation.Ectopic over-expression of ZNF831 suppressed breast cancer cell proliferation and col-ony formation and promoted apoptosis in vitro,while knockdown of ZNF831 resulted in an opposite phenotype.Anti-proliferation effect of ZNF831 was verified in vivo.Bioinformatic analysis of public databases and transcriptome sequencing both showed that ZNF831 could enhance apoptosis through transcriptional regulation of the JAK/STAT pathway.ChiP and luciferase report assays demonstrated that ZNF831 could directly bind to one specific region of STAT3 promoter and induce the transcriptional inhibition of STAT3.As a result,the attenuation of STAT3 led to a restraint of the transcription of Bcl2 and thus accelerated the apoptotic progression.Augmentation of STAT3 diminished the apoptosis-promoting effect of ZNF831 in breast cancer cell lines.Furthermore,ZNF831 could ameliorate the anti-proliferation effect of capecitabine and gemcitabine in breast cancer cell lines.Our findings demonstrate for the first time that ZNF831 is a novel transcriptional suppressor through inhibiting the expression of STAT3/Bcl2 and promoting the apoptosis process in breast cancer,suggesting ZNF831 as a novel biomarker and potential therapeutic target for breast cancer patients.
