Silicon monoxide(SiO)is an attractive anode material for next-generation lithium-ion batteries for its ultra-high theoretical capacity of 2680 mAh g−*** studies to date have been limited to electrodes with a rela-tively low mass loading(<3.5 mg cm^(−2)),which has seriously restricted the areal capacity and its potential in practical *** areal capacity with such high-capacity materials is critical for capitalizing their potential in practi-cal ***,we report a monolithic three-dimensional(3D)large-sheet holey gra-phene framework/SiO(LHGF/SiO)composite for high-mass-loading *** specifically using large-sheet holey graphene building blocks,we construct LHGF with super-elasticity and exceptional mechanical robustness,which is essential for accommodating the large volume change of SiO and ensuring the structure integrity even at ultrahigh mass ***,the 3D porous graphene network structure in LHGF ensures excellent electron and ion *** systematically tailoring microstructure design,we show the LHGF/SiO anode with a mass loading of 44 mg cm^(−2)delivers a high areal capacity of 35.4 mAh cm^(−2)at a current of 8.8 mA cm^(−2)and retains a capacity of 10.6 mAh cm^(−2)at 17.6 mA cm^(−2),greatly exceeding those of the state-of-the-art commercial or research ***,we show an LHGF/SiO anode with an ultra-high mass loading of 94 mg cm^(−2)delivers an unprecedented areal capacity up to 140.8 mAh cm^(−2).The achievement of such high areal capacities marks a critical step toward realizing the full potential of high-capacity alloy-type electrode materials in practical lithium-ion batteries.

There is a high demand for hydrogels with multifunctional performance(a combination of adhesive,mechanical,and electrical properties)in biological,tissue engineering,robotics,and smart device ***,a majority of existing hydrogels are relatively rigid and brittle,with limited stretchability;this hinders their application in the emerging field of flexible *** this study,cheap and abundant potato residues were used with polyacrylamide(PAM)to fabricate a multifunctional hydrogel,and chitosan was used for the design of a three-dimentional(3D)network-structured *** as-prepared hydrogels exhibited excellent stretchability,with an extension exceeding 900%and a recovery degree of over 99%.Due to the combination of physical and chemical cross-linking properties and the introduction of dopamine,the designed hydrogel exhibits a remarkable self-healing ability(80%mechanical recovery in 2 h),high tensile strength(0.75 MPa),and ultra-stretchability(900%).The resultant products offer superior properties compared to those of previously reported tough and self-healing hydrogels for wound *** and potato residues were used as scaffold materials for the hydrogels with excellent mechanical *** addition,in vitro experiments show that these hydrogels feature excellent antibacterial properties,effectively hindering the reproduction of ***,the ternary hydrogel can act as a strain sensor with high sensitivity and a gauge factor of *** proposed strategy is expected to serve as a reference for the development of green and recyclable conductive polymers to fabricate *** proposed hydrogel can also act as a suitable strain sensor for bio-friendly devices such as smart wearable electronic devices and/or for health monitoring.

We investigated the effects of elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) on biogeochemistry of marsh sediment including speciation of selected heavy metals in Salinas de San Pedro mudflat in california. The Salinas de San Pedro mudflat has higher carbon (C) content than the vast majority of fully-vegetated salt marshes even with the higher tidal action in the mudflat. Sources for CO2 were identified as atmospheric CO2 as well as due to local fault degassing process. We measured carbon dioxide, methane, total organic carbon, dissolved oxygen, salinity, and heavy metal concentration in various salt marsh locations. Overall, our results showed that CO2 concentration ranging from 418.7 to 436.9 (ppm), which are slightly different in various chambers but are in good agreement with some heavy metal concentrations values in mudflat at or around the same location. The selected metal concentration values (ppm) ranging from 0.003 - 0.011 (As);0.001 - 0.005 (Cd);0.04 - 0.02 (Cr);0.13 - 0.38 (Cu);0.11 - 0.38 (Pb);0.0009 - 0.020 (Se);and 0.188 - 0.321 (Zn). The low dissolved oxygen (ppm) in the pore water sediment indicated suboxic environment. Additionally, CO2 (ppm) and loss on ignition (LOI) (%) correlated inversely;the higher CO2 content, the lower was the LOI (%);that is to say the excess CO2 causes higher rates of decomposition and therefore it leads to lower LOI (%) on the mudflat surface. It appears that the elevated CO2 makes changes in salt marsh pore water chemistry for instance the free ionic metal (Cu2+, Pb2+, etc.) speciation is one of the most reactive form because simply assimilated by the non-decayed or alive organisms in sediment of salt marsh and/or in water. This means that CO2 not only is a sign of improvement in plant productivity, but also activates microbial decomposition through increases in dissolved organic carbon availability. The Coastal Coral Tree (Erythrina caffra Thunb.) produces floral nectar (FN) that serves to attract pollinating insects, but also secretes nectar from extra-floral (EFN) glands that serves to attract predatory insects, such as ants. While studies on myrmecophytes (i.e. specialized plants that attract and interact with ants) have primarily focused on interspecific evaluations of EFN chemistry, the Coastal Coral tree offers an opportunity to contrast intraspecific nectar chemistry with differing evolutionary and ecological functions. We hypothesized that the richness of (molecular) sugar species, relative concentrations, and diversity of sugars in FN and foliar EFN would diverge due to differences in the ecological role of the two types of nectar. High performance liquid chromatography with refractive index detection was used to identify the richness of sugar species (based on retention time), measure the relative concentrations, and evaluate the diversity of sugars in FN and foliar EFN secretions. We detected sugar species unique to each gland type and reported significant differences in the relative concentration of one sugar species common to both gland types. While the mean diversity index of sugars was similar for both gland types, the diversity of foliar EFN sugars was significantly more variable than that of FN sugars. The composition of FN showed little variation, and was reflective of its fundamental role in plant reproduction. Foliar EFN, however, demonstrated the variability expected of a context-dependent myrmecophyte that interacts with a facultative ant species assemblage across a mosaic of abiotic and biotic conditions.

Acanthamoeba keratitis is a serious infection that can lead to loss of vision. It is highly challenging and often poses a diagnostic dilemma, causing delay in diagnosis and treatment. We report herewith the clinical and histopathology findings of a patient with an atypical presentation of acanthamoeba keratitis in Bahrain. The patient is a 16-year-old Bahraini teenager who was a cosmetic contact lens wearer. She presented with clinical signs and symptoms of microbial keratitis, which was initially misdiagnosed elsewhere as a case of herpetic corneal infection. Her corneal biopsy confirmed the clinical diagnosis as acanthamoeba keratitis. The patient was started on anti amoebic treatment. The infection got eradicated. The cornea healed with a central scar. Eventually, she underwent penetrating keratoplasty. This case report serves to raise awareness of this rare condition. Clinicians should have a high index of suspicion when diagnosing such cases among contact lens wearers. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent serious complications.

Earthquakes play a fundamental role in the evolution of Earth’s topography through co-seismic uplift and subsidence,as well as erosion through widespread landslides induced by ground ***-induced landslides can result in exceptional increases in the transfer of mass from landscapes,supplying sediment to rivers where impacts can last for decades or *** can also erode vegetation and soils,in addition to exposing freshly ground rock mass,which can both result in regionally significant carbon *** work has sought to quantify the fluxes,rates,and temporal patterns of the impacts on earth surface processes generated by these tectonic *** this review,we focus on the impacts of earthquake-induced landslides on erosion and sediment flux,river water chemistry,and carbon export through the lens of the well-studied 2008 Wenchuan *** then discuss these themes in the context of works from the 1999 Taiwan Chi-Chi earthquake,2015 Nepalese Gorkha earthquake,and New Zealand historical earthquakes,altogether highlighting an important role of earthquake-induced landslides in erosion and weathering along tectonically active mountain *** suggest that more monitoring,geochemical tracing,paleo-records,and/or modelling studies are needed to compare the processes and fluxes of catchment erosion and weathering before and after earthquake events,which will help to deepen our understanding not only of the impacts of earthquake-induced landslides on earth surface processes,but also the linkage among high magnitude events,continental erosion and weathering,and the long-term global carbon cycle.
