We examine the impacts of competitive industry position on firms'''' export propensity and intensity in china. Drawing on the resource-based view and the structure-conduct-performance paradigm of firm behavior, we investigate whether firms with competitive industry position through cost leadership or differentiation strategy have different export behaviors. We use a longitudinal data of 213,662 manufacturing firms in china from 1998 to 2005 to show that firms that have developed competitive advantages in the domestic market are more likely to export and have higher levels of export intensity. Indigenous and foreign manufacturing firms exhibit different patterns of export behaviors. Foreign firms with differentiation advantages focus on local market expansion instead of seeking opportunity in export markets.

＜正＞china’s export structure has upgraded *** some believe that this upgrading is due to foreign direct investment and processing trade,the issue has not been adequately *** this paper,we investigate this issue by examining variations in export sophistication across Chinese manufacturing *** results show that export sophistication is positively associated with output share of wholly foreign owned enterprises,but not with that of foreign joint ventures;it is positively associated with processing exports by foreign firms,but is negatively associated with processing exports by indigenous Chinese *** from relative export prices of Chinese goods,which measure within-product sophistication, shows a similar pattern.

＜正＞The institutional environment - including protection of private properties and contract enforcement - has been rather unfavorable for the emergence and development of china’s private *** is in sharp contrast to the case of the developed economies where the institutional environment is conductive to the entrepreneurial activities and only the personal attributes of would-be entrepreneurs determine their entrepreneurship *** thus propose a theoretical framework for the entrepreneurship decision in china with a focus on the role of institutional *** a life-histories survey data of 2,854 respondents from twenty cities in china,we find strong support for the impacts of the institutional environment and its interactions with other determinants of entrepreneurship decision.

This paper documents the whole picture of economic activities spatial distribution in china based on two recent nationwide censuses of *** robust increasing trend of agglomeration supports the argument that interregional trade barriers in china decreased during *** extend the agglomeration literature by studying agglomeration patterns of establishments with various ownership *** find that non-public owned establishments are more spatially concentrated compared with public owned *** also examine determinants of agglomeration economies with multivariate *** show that micro-foundations of agglomeration work well in explaining agglomeration of non-public owned establishments,but not for public owned ones.

Using a comprehensive panel data set of china''''s state-owned enterprises, we investigate the impacts of privatization on social welfare and firm performance indicators. The privatization of china''''s state-owned enterprises was found to have little impact on the change of firm employment, but it did lead to increasing sales and hence higher labor productivity. Meanwhile, there was a gain in firm profitability contributed to mostly by the reduction of managerial expenses to sales. The impact of privatization was sustainable in the long run, and was more pronounced when state ownership was reduced to minority position as opposed to majority position.

In this study, we examine the impact of cumulative experiences that arise from a series of sequential entries on the performance of foreign subsidiaries of multinational firms. Drawing upon the literature on organizational learning, we propose that multinational firms acquire different types of experiences at the firm level, including general entry experience, entry specific experience, and exporting experience, which exert different influences on their performance. We also investigate the effect of experience on performance at the subsidiary level. Using a dataset of 245 subsidiaries of 81 large U.S. firms in china, we find that firms'''' entry specific experience, exporting experience, and subsidiary level experience exhibit significant effects on the return on sales of foreign subsidiaries. Further, the effect of exporting experience gets weaker as firms accumulate more entry specific experience. Firms'''' general entry experience, however, is not related to subsidiary performance.

＜正＞Using panel data analysis,this paper investigates the impact of R＆D investment,returnee entrepreneurs and inter-firm employee mobility,between multinational corporations（MNCs） and local firms,on innovation in Chinese high-tech *** international technology spillovers and internal efforts are found to jointly determine the innovation performance of Chinese high-tech firms, and we report that the presence of returnee entrepreneurs and R＆D investment positively affect *** addition,there are significant knowledge spillover effects associated with returnees and MNC employee mobility,and the effects of these two components of international human mobility on local firms’ innovation are mutually *** also present the distinctive result that the presence of MNCs has a negative impact on local ***,this negative effect may be compensated by the two types of human *** findings have important implications for practitioners and policy makers.

It is well recognized that carbon dioxide and air pollutants share similar emission sources so that synergetic policies on climate change mitigation and air pollution control can lead to remarkable co-benefits on greenhouse gas reduction,air quality improvement,and improved *** the context of carbon peak,carbon neutrality,and clean air policies,this perspective tracks and analyzes the process of the synergetic governance of air pollution and climate change in china by developing and monitoring 18 *** 18 indicators cover the following five aspects:air pollution and associated weather-climate conditions,progress in structural transition,sources,inks,and mitigation pathway of atmospheric composition,health impacts and benefits of coordinated control,and synergetic governance system and *** tracking the progress in each indicator,this perspective presents the major accomplishment of coordinated control,identifies the emerging challenges toward the synergetic governance,and provides policy recommendations for designing a synergetic roadmap of Carbon Neutrality and Clean Air for china.
