Clinical value of oral contrast-enhanced ultrasonography in diagnosis of gastric tumors

BACKGROUND The incidence of gastric cancer remains high,and it is the sixth most common cancer and the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths *** contrastenhanced ultrasonography is a simple,non-invasive,and painless method for the diagnosis of gastric *** To explore the diagnostic value of oral contrast-enhanced ultrasonography for the detection of gastric *** The screening results based on oral contrast-enhanced ultrasonography and electronic gastroscopy were compared with those of the postoperative pathological *** Among 42 patients with gastric tumors enrolled in the study,the diagnostic accordance rate was 95.2%for oral contrast-enhanced ultrasonography(n=40)and 90.5%for electronic gastroscopy(n=38)compared with postoperative pathological *** Kappa value of consistency test with pathological findings was 0.812 for oral contrast-enhanced ultrasonography and 0.718 for electronic gastroscopy,and there was no significant difference between them(P=0.397).For the TNM staging of gastric tumors,the accuracy rate of oral contrast enhanced ultrasonography was 81.9%for the overall T staging and 50%,77.8%,100%,and 100%for T1,T2,T3,and T4 staging,*** sensitivity and specificity were both 100%for stages T3 and *** diagnostic accuracy rate of oral contrast-enhanced ultrasonography was 93.8%,80%,100%,and 100%for stages N0,N1-N3,M0,and M1,*** The accordance rate of qualitative diagnosis by oral contrast-enhanced ultrasonography is comparable to that of gastroscopy,and it could be used as the preferred method for the early screening of gastric tumors.

Cancer incidence and patient survival rates among the residents in the Pudong New Area of Shanghai between 2002 and 2006

With the growing threat of malignancy to health,it is necessary to analyze cancer incidence and patient survival rates among the residents in Pudong New Area of Shanghai to formulate better cancer prevention strategies.A total of 43,613 cancer patients diagnosed between 2002 and 2006 were recruited from the Pudong New Area Cancer *** incidence,observed survival rate,and relative survival rate of patients grouped by sex,age,geographic area,and TNM stage were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier,life table,and Ederer II methods,*** 2002 and 2006,cancer incidence in Pudong New Area was 349.99 per 100,000 person-years,and the 10 most frequently diseased sites were the lung,stomach,colon and rectum,liver,breast,esophagus,pancreas,brain and central nervous system,thyroid,and *** patients with cancers of the colon and rectum,breast,thyroid,brain and central nervous system,and bladder,the 5-year relative survival rate was greater than 40%,whereas patients with cancers of the liver and pancreas had a 5-year relative survival rate of less than 10%.The 1-year to 5-year survival rates for patients grouped by sex,age,geographic area,and TNM stage differed significantly(all P<0.001).Our results indicate that cancer incidence and patient survival in Pudong New Area vary by tumor type,sex,age,geographic area,and TNM stage.

Boron neutron capture therapy(BNCT)is a cancer treatment modality based on the nuclear capture and fission reactions that occur when boron-10,a stable isotope,is irradiated with neutrons of the appropriate energy to produce boron-11 in an unstable form,which undergoes instantaneous nuclear fission to produce high-energy,tumoricidal alpha *** primary purpose of this review is to provide an update on the first drug used clinically,sodium borocaptate(BSH),by the Japanese neurosurgeon Hiroshi Hatanaka to treat patients with brain tumors and the second drug,boronophenylalanine(BPA),which first was used clinically by the Japanese dermatologist Yutaka Mishima to treat patients with cutaneous ***,BPA has become the primary drug used as a boron delivery agent to treat patients with several types of cancers,specifically brain tumors and recurrent tumors of the head and neck *** focus of this review will be on the initial studies that were carried out to define the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of BSH and BPA and their biodistribution in tumor and normal tissues following administration to patients with high-grade gliomas and their subsequent clinical use to treat patients with highgrade ***,wewill summarize the studies thatwere carried out in Japan with BSH and subsequently at our own institution,The Ohio State University,and those of several other ***,we will describe studies carried out in Japan with BPA and then in the United States that have led to its use as the primary drug that is being used clinically for ***,although there have been intense efforts to develop new and better boron delivery agents for BNCT,none of these have yet been evaluated *** present reportwill provide a guide to the future clinical evaluation of new boron delivery agents prior to their clinical use for BNCT.
