Rice (Oryza sativa L.) nutrient management using mycorrhizal fungi and endophytic Herbaspirillum seropedicae

Integrated nutrient management with biological and chemical fertilizers can improve rice （Oryza safiva L.） productivity, bio-fortification, soil health and fertility. Accordingly, this study was planned to evaluate the combined effects of biological fertilizers including arbuscular mycorrhizal （AM） fungi （Glomus mosseae） and free-living nitrogen-fixing bacteria （Herbaspi- rillum seropedicae）, as well as chemical fertilizers on the yield and nutrient contents of wetland rice under field conditions. Seedlings were inoculated with AM fungi and the bacteria in the nursery and were then transplanted to the field. The experi- ment was carried out as a split factorial design with three replicates. Treatments included three rates of nitrogen （N 1, N2 and N3） and phosphorous （P1, P2 and P3） fertilizers （100, 75 and 50% of the optimum level） in the main plots and mycorrhizal and bacterial treatments in the sub plots. The total of urea （g） used per plot was equal to N1=200, N2=150 and N3=100 at three different growth stages （seeding, tillering and heading） and the total of P （g） per plot used once at seeding using triple super phosphate including P1 =16, P2=13 and P3=10. Plant growth and yield as well as the concentration of nitrogen （N）, phosphorous （P）, potassium （K）, iron （Fe）, and zinc （Zn） were measured in the soil, straw and grains. N-fertilizer and biological fertilizers had significant effects on root, shoot and grain yield of rice, however, P-fertilizer just significantly affected root and shoot dry weights. Interestingly, analyses of variance indicated that biological fertilization significantly affected all the experimental treatments except straw N. AM fungi, N1 and P1 resulted in the highest rate of rice growth and yield. The interactions of chemical and biological fertilization resulted in significant effects on grain Zn, Fe, P, and N as well as soil Fe, K and N. The potential prognostic and predictive roles of programmed cell death protein 1 expressed by tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes in solid tumors:a meta-analysis

Aim:Several previous studies have evaluated the potential role of programmed cell death protein 1(PD-1)expressed by tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes(TILs)in various solid tumors and performed its prognosis role in patients’survival with inconsistent *** study aims to further systematically evaluate the association of PD-1 by TILs with clinicopathological parameters and clinical outcomes in solid tumor ***:A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed,Embase,Web of Science,CNKI and Wanfang databases for relevant *** potential prognostic and predictive roles of PD-1 were assessed by pooled hazard ratio(HR),odds ratio(OR)and 95%confidence intervals(CI).A total of 1863 patients were selected for in-depth ***:The results demonstrated that PD-1 by TILs was correlated to overall survival for ovarian cancer(HR=0.40,95%CI:0.26-0.61,P<0.00001).Higher PD-1 expression was associated with lymph node metastasis(OR=2.55,95%CI:1.22-5.29,P=0.01)and tumor grade(OR=3.08,95%CI:2.07-4.57,P<0.00001).Conclusion:The prognostic role of PD-1 by TILs is variant in different tumor types,which highlights the role of PD-1 by TILs as a potential predictive and prognostic biomarker and the development of strategies against the PD-L1/PD-1 axis would be a promising therapeutic target for some solid tumors.

A method for automatically translating print books into electronic Braille books

In this paper, a method for automatically translating scanned images from print books into electronic Braille books is proposed with the objective of reducing the amount of time and cost required for producing Braille books. The proposed method consists of processes for identifying character and image areas in a scanned image, automatically translating characters and images into Braille and tactile graphics, respectively, and positioning Braille and tactile graphics into an electronic Braille page. Experimental results show that the proposed method drastically reduces the time required to translate a print book into an electronic Braille book. Despite the drastic reduction in translation time, the method proposed in this paper does not compromise the ability to recognize information for the visually impaired compared to manually produced Braille books, demonstrating its feasibility in practical applications. Therefore, the proposed method is expected to significantly reduce the time and cost required for producing Braille books, and provide more reading materials for the visually impaired,making significant contributions to enhancing their knowledge and welfare.

A Behind-the-Scenes Story of Precision Medicine

Let me start with a few words about the goals and intended audience for this introduction to republication of two reports of the U.S. National Research Council （NRC） - Mapping and Sequencing the Human Genome （1988） and Toward Precision Medicine （2011）. I do not intend to summarize what the reports say. They are both short, well written, and can speak for themselves. I encourage readers who want a quick sum- mary to read these reports the way most policy-makers do： start with the Executive Summaries, particularly the Conclu- sions and Recommendations. NRC committees write these summaries with great care since they are read far more widely, and by a more influential audience, than the bodies of the reports. With respect to audience, I assume this book will be of greatest interest to scientists and policy-makers interested in how the policy-making apparatus in the United States works and how it shaped two key initiatives in biology and medicine during their formative stages.

Simple waves for two-dimensional compressible pseudo-steady Euler system

A simple wave is defined as a flow in a region whose image is a curve in the phase space. It is well known that ＂the theory of simple waves is fundamental in building up the solutions of flow problems out of elementary flow patterns＂ see Courant and Friedrichs＇s chassical book ＂Supersonic Flow and Shock Waves＂. This paper mainly concerned with the geometric construction of simple waves for the 2D pseudo-steady compressible Euler system. Based on the geometric interpretation, the expansion or compression simple wave flow construction around a pseudo-stream line with a bend part are constructed. It is a building block that appears in the global solution to four contact discontinuities Riemann problems.

Follicle and melanocyte stem cells, and their application in neuroscience A Web of Science-based literature analysis

OBJECTIVE： To identify global research trends of follicle and melanocyte stem cells, and their application in neuroscience. DATA RETRIEVAL： We performed a bibliometric analysis of studies from 2002 to 2011 on follicle and melanocyte stem cells, and their application in neuroscience, which were retrieved from the Web of Science, using the key words follicle stem cell or melanocyte stem cell, and neural, neuro or nerve. SELECTION CRITERIA： Inclusion criteria：（a） peer-reviewed published articles on follicle and melanocyte stem cells, and their application in neuroscience, which were indexed in the Web of Science; （b） original research articles, reviews, meeting abstracts, proceedings papers, book chapters, editorial material, and news items. Exclusion criteria：（a） articles that required manual searching or telephone access; （b） documents that were not published in the public domain; and （c） a number of corrected papers from the total number of articles. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES：（1） Distribution of publications on follicle and melanocyte stem cells by years, journals, countries, institutions, institutions in China, and most cited papers. （2） Distribution of publications on the application of follicle and melanocyte stem cells in neuroscience by years, journals, countries, institutions, and most cited papers. RESULTS： Of the 348 publications from 2002 to 2011 on follicle and melanocyte stem cells, which were retrieved from the Web of Science, more than half were from American authors and institutes. The most prolific institutions in China for publication of papers on follicle and melanocyte stem cells were the Fourth Military Medical University and Third Military Medical University. The most prolific journals for publication of papers on follicle and melanocyte stem cells were the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, Pigment Cell ＆ Melanoma Research. Historical Development in Soil Micromorphological Imaging

The book ＂micropedolog＂ by Kubieana and a large number of publications has induced many people to practice soil micromorphology. Quantification of the soil fabric and its components was a major challenge. The use of the image analyses in soil science was a breakthrough. Attempts to make soil thin sections go back to the beginning of the 2oth century. Microscopic techniques and recently high resolution electron microscope and use of computer assisted imaging techniques enabled the in vitro study of soils in three dimensional levels. It is now possible to store and process massive amounts of data. Micro- morphological concepts and techniques are applied in paleopedological, ecological, and archaeological studies. The aim of this work was to examine soil micromorphological imaging in historical perspective.

Use of acupuncture to treat cerebral infarction in the last 10 years A Scopus-based literature analysis

OBJECTIVE： To identify global research trends in the use of acupuncture to treat cerebral infarction. DATA RETRIEVAL： We performed a bibliometric analysis of studies on the use of acupuncture to treat cerebral infarction published during 2002-2011, retrieved from Scopus, using the key words of acupuncture and cerebral infarction or ischemic stroke. SELECTION CRITERIA： Inclusion criteria： peer-reviewed articles on the use of acupuncture to treat cerebral infarction indexed in Scopus and published between 2002 and 2011; types of publications were original research articles, reviews, meeting abstracts, proceedings papers, book chapters, editorial material, and news items. Exclusion criteria： articles that required manual searching or telephone access; documents that were not published in the public domain; and corrected papers. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES：（a） Annual publication output; （b） language of publication; （c） type of publication; （d） key words of publication; （e） publication by research field; （f） publication by journal （g） publication by country and institution; （h） publication by author; （i） most-cited papers between 2002 and 2006; and （j） most-cited papers between 2007 and 2011. RESULTS： A total of 160 publications on the use of acupuncture to treat cerebral infarction from 2002-2011 were retrieved from Scopus. The number of publications increased gradually over the 10-year study period; most were written in Chinese or English. articles and reviews constituted the major types. The most frequent key word used was acupuncture. The most prolific journals in this area were Zhongguo 7hen Jiu and the Chinese Journal of Clinical Rehabilitation. Of the 160 publications retrieved, half came from Chinese authors and institutions. Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was the most prolific research institute. Two papers were cited 30 times; they were published in 2002 and 2009, respectively. CONCLUSION： In the field of neuroscience, there is little literature
