Magnitude and direction of temperature variability affect hospitalization for myocardial infarction and stroke:population-based evidence from Guangzhou,China

Relationships between nonoptimal temperatures and cardiovascular disease(CVD)mortality have been well ***,evidence of the association between temperature variability(TV)and CVD morbidity is *** study aimed to quantify the risk and burden of CVD-related hospitalization associated with the magnitude and direction of *** on meteorology and population-based hospitalizations for myocardial infarction(MI)and stroke were collected in Guangzhou,China,from 2013 to *** temperature variability(HTV)was measured as the standard deviation of hourly temperature records over specific exposure *** direction(upward or downward)of HTV was defined as the average daily mean temperature change relative to that of the previous day during the exposure ***-Poisson regression was applied to assess the impact of HTV after adjusting for the daily mean temperature,and the hospitalization fractions attributable to HTV were calculated.A 1℃-increase in HTV was significantly associated with a 2.24%and 1.72%increase in hospitalizations for MI and hemorrhagic stroke(HS)at lag 0–1 d,respectively,and a 1.55%increase in hospitalizations for ischemic stroke(IS)at lag 0–3 *** the study period,5.99%,4.64%,and 4.53%of MI,HS,and IS hospitalizations,respectively,were attributable to *** upward TV exerts acute effects on CVD hospital admissions,whereas the impact of downward TV generally *** findings highlight the importance of the magnitude and direction of temperature fluctuations,in addition to the mean level,in assessing the adverse health impacts of temperature variations.

To the Editor:Assessment of data appropriateness is a process to answer whether electronic health records(EHRs)from routine healthcare practices couldt intended study purposes,for example,available to be proceeded,with enough individual records,with relevant information able to be extracted from records,etc.[1-3]This has been increasingly underscored as a prerequisite when using EHRs(one important type of real-world data[RWD])for scientic purposes.[4-6]Although controversies remain on the denitions,types and assessment methods of the dimensions of RWD appropriateness,the latest ofcial guidelines(i.e.,from the *** and Drug Administration[FDA][4]and China National Medical Products Administration[NMPA][6])suggest that the assessment start from a preliminary stage on variable existence,and subsequently deepen into the issue of data value(such as missing value,outliers,etc.),as the preliminary assessment is the foundation of the overall RWD appropriateness.[7]Little is known about the appropriateness of EHRs in developing regions,which feature high visit volumes and a great number of ***,this study aimed to preliminarily investigate RWD appropriateness from hospitals in developing regions from the perspective of core variables’comparison.

Ambient air pollution and adverse birth outcomes: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Effects of professional rehabilitation training on the recovery of neurological function in young stroke patients

Young stroke patients have a strong desire to return to the society, but few studies have been conducted on their rehabilitation training items, intensity, and prognosis. We analyzed clinical data of young and middle-aged/older stroke patients hospitalized in the department of Neurological Rehabilitation, China Rehabilitation Research Center, Capital Medical University, China from February 2014 to May 2015. Results demonstrated that hemorrhagic stroke （59.6%） was the primary stroke type found in the young group, while ischemic stroke （60.0%） was the main type detected in the middle-aged/older group. Compared with older stroke patients, education level and incidence of hyperhomocysteinemia were higher in younger stroke patients, whereas, incidences of hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease were lower. The average length of hospital stay was longer in the young group than in the middle-aged/older group. The main risk factors observed in the young stroke patients were hypertension, drinking, smoking, hyperlipidemia, hyperhomocysteinemia, diabetes, previous history of stroke, and heart disease. The most accepted rehabilitation program consisted of physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, acupuncture and moxibustion. Average rehabilitation training time was 2.5 hours/day. Barthel Index and modified Rankin Scale scores were increased at discharge. Six months after discharge, the degree of occupational and economic satisfaction declined, and there were no changes in family life satisfaction. The degrees of other life satisfaction （such as friendship） improved. The degree of disability and functional status improved significantly in young stroke patients after professional rehabilitation, but the number of patients who returned to society within 6 months after stroke was still small.

Though a relatively young discipline, translational bioinformatics （TBI） has become a key component of biomedical research in the era of precision medicine. Development of high-throughput technologies and electronic health records has caused a paradigm shift in both healthcare and biomedical research. Novel tools and methods are required to convert increasingly voluminous datasets into information and actionable knowledge. This review provides a definition and contex- tualization of the term TBI, describes the discipline＇s brief history and past accomplishments, as well as current loci, and concludes with predictions of future directions in the field.

Characteristics of sildenafil erections in healthy young men

Aim： To determine the effect of sildenafil citrate on the nocturnal penile erections （i.e. time to onset, the duration of erection, and the interval between first and second erections） of healthy young men. Methods： Twenty-two potent men, 23-29 years old, were recruited for the study. All subjects completed three sessions over consecutive nights using the RigiScan monitoring device （Dacomed, Minneapolis, USA）. After a first night of adaptation, night 2 records were their baseline values, and on night 3 they received 100 mg of sildenafil citrate. Statistical comparisons were done between the second and third night data. Results： The mean time to onset of the first erection with sildenafil citrate was （34 ± 18） min, whereas it was （74 ± 24） min （P 〈 0.001） without sildenafil citrate. The number of erections observed during the first 5 h after sildenafil citrate medication was 3.6 ± 0.5 in contrast to 2.4 ± 0.5 with no medica- tion （P = 0.001）. The interval between first and second erections was shorter with sildenafil citrate：（52 ± 26） min vs. （85 ± 34） min （P = 0.01）. The duration of the last erection was statistically significantly longer with the sildenafil citrate：（64 ± 33） min vs. （42 ± 28） min （P 〈 0.01）. Conclusion： Healthy young men achieved erection within 34 min after sildenafil citrate administration, which is shorter than the 1 h interval proposed by the manufacturer. The interval between the first and second erections was shorter and the duration of the last nocturnal erection was longer.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Findings of Olfactory Bulb in Anosmic Patients with COVID-19: A Systematic Review

Background Anosmia is one of the symptoms in individuals with SARS-CoV-2 *** anosmic patients,SARS-CoV-2 temporarily alters the signaling process in olfactory nerve cells and olfactory bulb(OB),which eventually damages the structure of the olfactory epithelium,leading to a permanent disorder in the olfactory pathway that this damaged structure is showed in MRI imaging Method Two investigators independently searched four databases consisting of PubMed,ProQuest,Scopus,and Web of Science for relevant records as of November 11,2020 with no time,space,and language *** Scholar was also searched for the related resources within the time limit of *** the found articles were reviewed based on the PRISMA flow *** studies,case reports,editorials,letters,and other non-original studies were excluded from this systematic *** Initial search yielded 434 *** reviewing the titles and abstracts,we selected 74 articles;finally,8 articles were depicted to be investigated and read in full *** obtained results showed an increase in the width and volume of the olfactory cleft(OC),complete or partial destruction of OC,and complete occlusion of OC in COVID-19 *** and degeneration as well as a subtle asymmetry were evident in the *** tomography(CT),meganetic resonance imaging(MRI),and positron emission tomography(PET)were used to detect the outcomes of anosmia in these *** The changes in OC are greater than those in OB in patients with COVID-19,mainly due to the inflammatory and immune responses in ***,fewer changes in OB are due to neurological or vascular *** steroid therapy and topical saline can be helpful.

Cortical and spinal evoked potential response to electrical stimulation in human rectum

AIM: To study a novel technique to record spinal and cortical evoked potentials (EPs) simultaneously in response to electrical stimulation in the human rectum. METHODS: Eight male and nine female healthy volunteers participated. Stimulating electrodes were attached to the rectal mucosa at 15 cm and 12 cm above the dentate line. Recording skin electrodes were positioned over vertebrae L4 through S2. The electrical stimulus was a square wave of 0.2 ms duration and the intensity of the stimulus varied between 0 and 100 mA. EP responses were recorded using a Nicolet Viking IV programmable signal ***: Simultaneous recording of cortical and spinal EPs was obtained in > 80% of the trials. The EP responses increased with the intensity of the electrical stimulation, were reproducible overtime, and were blocked by application of Lidocaine jelly at the site of stimulation. The morphology (N1/P1), mean ± SD for latency (spinal N1, 4.6 ± 0.4 ms; P1, 6.8 ± 0.5 ms; cortical N1, 136.1 ± 4.2 ms; P1, 233.6 ± 12.8 ms) and amplitude (N1/P1, spinal, 38 ± 7 μV; cortical 19 ± 3 μV) data for the EP responses were consistent with those in the published literature. Reliable and reproducible EP recordings were obtained with the attachment of the electrodes to the rectal mucosa at predetermined locations between 16 and 8 cm above the anal verge, and the distance between the attachment sites of the electrodes (the optimal distance being approximately 3.0 cm between the two electrodes). CONCLUSION: This technique can be used to assess potential abnormalities in primary afferent neural pathways innervating the rectum in several neurodegenerative and functional pain disorders.
