Purpose:To compare cartilage tympanoplasty(CT)combined with eustachian tube balloon dilatation(ETBD)and cartilage tympanoplasty alone as a surgical treatment modality for adhesive otitis media(AdOM)in terms of graft healing,audiological outcomes,and impact on life style,using Chronic Otitis Media Outcome Test 15(COMOT-15).Methods:50 patients with AdOM were randomly classified into 2 groups:25 patients for cartilage tympanoplasty only(CT group)and 25 patients for cartilage tympanoplasty combined with eustachian tube balloon dilatation(CT t ETBD group).Clinical outcomes in both groups were compared at 3 and 6 months of follow ***:There was no significant difference in graft healing between the two *** COMOT-15 scores significantly decreased in both groups with a significant difference between the groups with regard to the decrease in COMOT-15 scores at 3 and 6 months of follow-up(Paudiological outcome and quality of life.

Objectives: To evaluate audiological and vestibular functions via basic audiological evaluation. otoacoustic emissions and videonystagmography(VNG) in vitiligo *** and methods: 30 vitiligo patients(8 acrofacial and 22 mixed types) as the study group and 30 normal healthy adults as the control group were included in the study. All participants were submitted to basic audiological evaluation. transient and distortion product otoacoustic emmisions(TEOAEs and DPOAEs), vestibular assessment including history taking, office tests and videonystagmography(VNG) and dermatological assessment to determine type, percent of body surface area involvement and duration of ***: This study showed statistically significant difference between control and study groups in pure tone audiometry(PTA) and otoacoustic emissions results. Fitfty percent of vitiligo patients had peripheral vestibular disorders(10 vestibulhar neuritis and 5 posterior canal benign paroxysmal positional ***: The results in this study showed that 50% of vitiligo patients suffered from peripheral vestibular disorders in addition to auditory affection. Vitiligo patients require routine monitoring for auditory and vestibular functions for early identification and monitoring of changes as the disease progress.

Stapes fracture causes hearing loss and instability in the middle ear hearing system(MEHS). The material used in the stapes reconstruction restores stapes, but the effects of the nonlinear material parameters on the stability of the MEHS are still unknown. To address this challenge, the nonlinear dynamic response and stability of the stapes reconstruction are investigated using a multi-degree-of-freedom mechanical model. The material parameters of the implant are tentatively determined by analyzing the natural frequencies of the undamped system. The dynamical properties of the MEHS are characterized under different external excitations. The approximate solution of the MEHS near the resonant frequency is derived through the multiple-time-scale method(MTSM). The results show that the nonlinear stiffness of the material has little influence on the MEHS in the healthy state, but it causes resonant phenomena between the ossicle and the implant in the pathological state.

Objectives:This study aimed to determine the prognostic value of otoacoustic emissions(OAEs)in idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss ***:The study included 30 subjects with unilateral idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss(ISSNHL).Each patient was evaluated four times:at baseline and after one week,one month,and three months of *** each visit,each patient was subjected to full audiological history,otoscopic examination,basic audiological evaluations,and transiently evoked and distortion product otoacoustic emission(TEOAEs&DEOAEs).Results:The hearing thresholds(frequency range 250e8000 Hz)and word recognition scores of patients with detectable TEOAEs and DPOAEs improved significantly,whereas no significant improvements were observed in those with no ***:Hearing improvement is better in patients with detectable TEOAEs and *** a result,TEOAEs and DPOAEs are recommended as routine tests in all SSNHL patients to predict outcomes and monitor treatment as TEOAEs and DPOAEs reflect the cochlear OHCs activity.

BACKGROUND Acute otitis media(AOM)is a common disease that is more prevalent in *** studies concerning AOM-associated sudden sensorineural hearing loss are case reports and retrospective in nature,hence the etiology of AOM-associated sudden hearing loss has not been fully *** To analyze audiological characteristics of AOM-associated sudden hearing loss and evaluate efficacy of combined tympanostomy tube placement(TTP)and intratympanic *** Eight adult patients who were diagnosed with AOM-associated sudden hearing loss and ineffectively treated by conventional medical therapy were enrolled in this *** data were collected,and pure tone audiometry was performed to assess the audiological *** therapy with TTP and intratympanic methylprednisolone injection was given to the *** Mixed or sensorineural hearing loss was observed at high frequencies(2–4 kHz).All the cases in this study were cured after TTP and intratympanic *** treatment,the average hearing threshold at affected frequencies was significantly lower than those in the pretreatment group(P0.05).CONCLUSION AOM rarely induces sudden sensorineural hearing *** therapy with TTP and intratympanic methylprednisolone injection may be effective after failure of conventional medical treatment.

Apert syndrome is one of the craniosynostosis syndromes and is commonly associ ated with conductive hearing loss, but there are contradicting reports regarding the cause. Retrospective analysis of case notes of Apert syndrome patients seen between 1970 and 2003 was therefore undertaken. Seventy case notes were obtaine d; 59%were males. The incidence of congenital hearing impairment was 3.0%. Alm ost all had otitismedia with effusion, which tends to persist into adulthood. Mo re than 56%developed permanent low frequency conductive hearing loss by 10-20 years of age.

AIM To investigate the effect of different neonatal risk factors on different language parameters as well as cognitive abilities among Arabic speaking Egyptian children at the age of two to three years of life and to find out which risk factor(s) had the greatest impact on language and cognitive *** This retrospective cohort study was conducted on 103 children with age range of 2-3 years(median age 31 mo).They were 62 males and 41 females who were exposed to different high-risk factors in the perinatal period,with exclusion of metabolic disorders,sepsis/meningitis,congenital anomalies and chromosomal *** studied children were subjected to a protocol of language assessment that included history taking,clinical and neurological examination,audiological evaluation,assessment of language using modified preschool language scale-4,IQ and mental age assessment and assessment of social *** The studied children had a median gestational age of 37 wk,median birth weight of 2.5 *** distribution of the high-risk factors in the affected children were prematurity in 25 children,respiratory distress syndromein 25 children,hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in 15 children,hyperbilirubinemia in 10 children,hypoglycemia in 13 children,mixed risk factors in 15 *** results revealed that high-risk neonatal complications were associated with impairment of different language parameters and cognitive abilities(P < 0.05).The presence of prematurity,in relation to other risk factors,increases the risk of language and cognitive delay significantly by 3.9 *** Arabic-speaking children aged 2-3 years who were exposed to high-risk conditions in the perinatal period are likely to exhibit delays in the development of language and impairments in cognitive *** most significant risk factor associated with language and cognitive impairments was prematurity.
