Comparisons of oxbow lake fish assemblages in relation to bigheaded carp establishment in the lower White River, Arkansas

Background Since the late 1990s, bigheaded carps(largely silver carp [Hypophthalmichthys molitrix] but also bighead carp [H. nobilis]) have established throughout the lower Mississippi River basin. Using previously studied oxbow lakes in the lower White River basin, Arkansas, we compared current(2017, “post-carp” establishment) fish assemblages to historical(2002, “pre-carp” establishment) fish assemblages. Fish assemblages were comprehensively assessed using multiple gears, including boat electrofishing, mini-fyke nets, and experimental small-mesh gill *** T-tests suggested that fish assemblage indices of richness, diversity, evenness, and dominance were often greater(P 0.05) between the pre-carp and post-carp period with fish assemblages depicted using mini-fyke nets. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling analyses indicated that fish assemblages differed structurally between pre-carp and post-carp periods. Assemblage differences were linked to both small and large abundance changes for more than 20 species. Abundances of gizzard shad(Dorosoma cepedianum), emerald shiner(Notropis atherinoides), pugnose minnow(Opsopoeodus emiliae), crappies(Pomoxis spp.), bluegill(Lepomis macrochirus), orangespotted sunfish(L. humilis), and yellow bass(Morone mississippiensis) declined between the pre-carp and postcarp periods. Water quality, habitat, and fish assemblage relationships in middle-order agriculture and forest streams of the Mississippi Alluvial Plain

Background Agriculture has greatly influenced water quality, habitats, and fish assemblages in streams of the Mississippi Alluvial Plain(MAP) ecoregion. However, MAP streams have historically been understudied compared to streams in other agricultural regions of the USA. In this study, water quality, habitat, and fish assemblage composition were assessed seasonally(spring, summer, and fall) in eight representative MAP streams located across three U.S. states. The study design included four streams containing highly agricultural watersheds(herein termed “agriculture” streams) and four streams containing mostly forested watersheds(herein termed “forest” streams), which were intended to represent reference conditions for MAP *** In general, forest streams contained significantly better instream and riparian habitats than agriculture streams(P = 0.010–0.040) whereas agriculture streams contained significantly greater levels of primary nutrients(P < 0.001–0.010). Differences between agriculture and forest streams with respect to other physical and chemical variables were intermittent and season dependent. Fish assemblages in agriculture and forest streams were structured primarily along an environmental gradient reflecting instream habitat conditions, water nutrient concentrations, and benthic chlorophyll-a production. Structurally, fish assemblages in both stream types contained many regionally common species, though some species appeared to exhibit affinities for a particular stream type. Functionally, fish assemblages in agriculture streams contained more tolerant species, more omnivores, and fewer insectivores compared to forest stream assemblages, which were nearly all insectivores. A Transcriptome Analysis of Neural Tissue of Litopenaeus vannamei After Acute Exposure to Alexandrium pacificum

Multi-strain probiotics provide the most dependable approaches to improve health,immune response,and disease resistance in farmed *** the present study,we examined the effects of multi-species probiotics on the survival,growth,immune response,and disease resistance of rohu(Labeo rohita)*** hatched larvae from the day of first feeding(average weight of 0.003 g)were reared with multi-species probiotics having a combination of Bacillus subtilis(109 colony forming units(cfu)/mL)and Lactobacillus spp.(Lactobacillus plantarum,Lactobacillus buchneri-1011 cfu/mL)in water containing doses of 0(control-C),0.5 mL/L(treatment 1-T1),and 1.0 mL/L(treatment 2-T2)in triplicates for 90 *** the experiment,a challenge test was performed to assess the fish's resistance to pathogenic Aeromonas *** higher survival was recorded in larvae of treated groups(87%in T2 and 79%in T1)compared to the control(62%).Significantly higher growth performance(weight gain and specific growth rate—SGR)was shown by the probiotic-treated larval groups compared to the *** supplementation resulted in significantly higher counts of total viable colony(TVC)and lactic acid bacteria(LAB)in the *** immunological parameters(mucosal fold fattening,goblet cell abundance,expansion of lamina propria and enterocytes)of the gut were significantly better in probiotic-treated *** liver of treated fish showed irregular shape nuclei turning into regular shape and reducing spaces between the hepatic ***-treated fish had the highest post-challenge survival rate(90%)against *** *** erythrocytes of challenged fish treated with probiotics had significantly lower frequencies of various nuclear and cellular *** findings suggest that multi-species probiotic supplements could improve the survival,growth,health status,and immune response of rohu in the early stages of its development.

Fruit Powder of Tetrapleura tetraptera in Local Feed on Some Zootechnical Performances of Juveniles of Clarias gariepinus in Concrete Tank

This study focused on the supplementation of four-sided spice fruit powder (Tetrapleura tetraptera) on some zootechnical performances of juveniles of Clarias gariepinus and was carried out from February 14 to July 20 at the Massoma Fish Farm of Bojongo Mbeidi located in the Littoral Region, department of Wouri, Douala IV district. The farm benefits from a climate favorable to aquaculture activity. For this purpose, five (5) treatments were tested including T0+ (imported feed), T0-, T0.3, T0.4, and T0.5 respectively for the treatments with 0% supplemented food;0.3%;0.4% and 0.5% of Tetrapleura tetraptera powder. A total of 450 Clarias gariepinus fry with an initial average weight of 7 ± 1.5 g, were distributed in happas of 0.49 m2 each placed in Triplicate in a completely randomized device. Four isoprotein foods with 38% crude protein were formulated to feed these fry at 7% of their biomass per day for 15 days then to their fullness until the end of the experiment. Intermediate fishing was carried out every fortnight. 75 days later, the results recorded show that the highest average survival rate (96.44% ± 3.5%) was recorded with the subjects fed feed supplemented with 0.4% T. tetraptera powder. The average weight (120.93 ± 67.20), weight gain (113.93 ± 67.20), specific growth rate (3.64 ± 0.79% g/d) and total lengths and standard (26.43 ± 1.9 and 23.66 ± 1.76) the highest were recorded with the T0+ treatment (imported feed). The highest conditioning factor K (2.14 ± 0.15) was recorded with the treatment supplemented with 0.4% T. tetraptera. The lowest conversion ratio (1.28) was recorded with the treatment fed with imported blue crown food (T0+). Furthermore, the lowest production cost was recorded with the treatment supplemented with 0.4% T. tetraptera. Assessing the pomfret stock for setting catch limits in the northern Bay of Bengal,Bangladesh

Pampus argenteus and Pampus chinensis form the high-value demersal Pomfret fishery of ***,due to a monotonic decline in catches over the last five years,it is essential to explore the current stock status concerning the removal rate to ensure the sustainability of this ***,given the reliability and minimal data requirements,this study employed an extended Bayesian State-Space Surplus Production Model,JABBA(Just Another Bayesian Biomass Assessment),to assess the stock *** results revealed that the stock biomass of the Pomfret fishery in the final year of the time series is significantly lower than BMSY,the biomass required to produce ***,this study recommends a yearly catch limit(TAC)of 10,000 metric tons to prevent further depletion of the stock ***,to avoid growth overfishing by allowing all immature fishes to reproduce at least once before being caught,this study also calculated the optimum length(Lopt)for catch for both species at which biologically maximum yield and revenue can be *** estimated Lopt is 25 cm for *** and 30 cm for ***,and not to capture fishes with lengths lower than these limits,this study further calculated the minimum mesh size limits for gill and set bag nets is 7.5 *** the mesh size regulation was estimated using length-based reference points derived from an empirical equation,this regulation can be used as an associate reference point when TAC is applied to assure the sustainability of this fishery.

A 56-day feeding period was performed to investigate the possible impacts of dietary nano curcumin(0,50,100,150,and 200 ppm)on the growth,nutrient utilization,non-specific immune parameters,antioxidants in Nile tilapia under chronic low temperature(21.02±0.11◦C).Fishes(n=225;Initial weight=4.39±0.08 g/fish)were randomly stocked at 15 fish/tank for five experimental groups in *** low-temperature circumstances,dietary curcumin in nano form showed no notable alteration in growth variable,nutrient efficiency,digestive enzymes efficiency,biometric indices,survival rates,and hematological ***,the serum of fishes with nano curcumin diets under low-temperature stress displayed higher total protein as well as lower glucose,cortisol,and total cholesterol compared with the control ***,fish fed nano curcumin diets displayed higher lysozyme and bactericidal activities compared to the control group and the best performance was found at dietary nano curcumin level of≥100 ***,groups fed the basal diet demonstrated the poorest antioxidant capacity,and the best superoxide dismutase(SOD)and glutathione peroxidase(GPx)existed in fish with nano curcumin diets while the best catalase(CAT)efficiency occurred at higher nano curcumin levels≥100 *** addition,higher counts of intestinal microbiota in terms of total bacterial count(TBC),total yeast and molds count(TYMC),and coliform were noticed in fish consumed the basal diet compared to groups fed on nano curcumin *** conclusion,incorporating nano curcumin at a level of≥100 mg/kg diet(particularly at 150 mg/kg)improved a non-specific immune response,antioxidant,and healthier gastrointestinal microbiota in Nile tilapia under chronic low-temperature stress.

Analyses of fin ray types to detect strontium markers in juvenile blunt-snout bream Megalobrama amblycephala

Background Restocking by introducing hatchery-reared fish into wild habitats aids in the restoration of fishery aquatic ecosystems and reefs to increase the abundance of fish resources, restore the ecological balance of water bodies, and enhance ecosystem functioning. Accurately, rapidly, and effectively evaluating the success of restocking using chemical markers（e.g., strontium [Sr]） remains challenging for fisheries management. Consequently, for nonlethal fish sampling, hard tissues, such as fin rays, have received increasing attention as a target for marking method. However, data on the differences in marking different types of fin rays remain limited. Therefore, we exposed juvenile blunt snout bream individuals（Megalobrama amblycephala） to 0（control group） or 800 mg/L of SrCl2·6H2O（marked group） for 5 days and transferred them into normal aerated water for post-immersion culture. We sampled their pectoral, dorsal, ventral, anal, and caudal fin rays. The Sr marks among the fin types were sampled at 0 and 20 days post-immersion and evaluated using an electron probe micro-analyzer（EPMA） for the five-day Sr/Ca ratios, along with line transect and Sr mapping *** Sr marking signatures were observed in all fin types in the marked group, with a success rate of up to 100%. Although marking efficiency varied among the different fin ray types, the highest Sr/Ca ratios were most often detected in the dorsal fin. Cross-sectional Sr concentration maps of all fin rays sampled showed high-Sr domains in the marked group; in contrast, the entire cross-sections of the control group displayed low Sr contents, indicating successful marking *** Fin ray Sr marking is a successful method for juvenile M. amblycephala, with the advantages of nonlethality and negligible sampling injuries, facilitating the rapid and effective evaluation of Sr marking in restocking M. amblycephala.
