Regulating serotonin expression can be used to treat psychotic depression. Mifepristone, a glu- cocorticoid receptor antagonist, is an effective candidate for psychotic depression treatment. However, the underlying mechanism related to serotonin transporter expression is poorly un- derstood. In this study, we cloned the human brain serotonin transporter into Xenopus oocytes, to establish an in vitro expression system. Two-electrode voltage clamp recordings were used to detect serotonin transporter activity. Our results show that mifepristone attenuates serotonin transporter activity by directly inhibiting the serotonin transporter, and suggests that the se- rotonin transporter is a pharmacological target of mifepristone for the treatment of psychotic depression.

We investigate the dc Josephson effect in one-dimensional junctions where a ring conductor is sandwiched between two semiconductor nanowires with proximity-induced superconductivity. Peculiar features of the Josephson effect arise due to the interplay of spin-orbit interaction and external Zeenmn field. By tuning the Zeeman field orientation, the device can vary from 0 to π junction. Afore importantly, nonzero ,losephson current is possible at zero phase difference across the junction. Although this anomalous Josephson current is not relevant to the topological phase transition, its magnitude can be significantly enhanced whe, n the nanowire, s become topological superconductors where Majorana bound states emerge. Distinct modulation patterns are obtained for the semiconductor nanowires in the topologically trivial and non-trivial phases. These results are useful to probe the topological phase transition in semiconductor nanowire junctions via the dc Josephson effect.

We performed R-matrix calculations for photoionization cross sections of the two ground state configuration 3s^23p^5（~2P_（3/2,1/2）~o） levels and 12 excited states of Ni Ⅻ using relativistic Dirac Atomic R-matrix Codes（DARC） across the photon energy range between the ionizations thresholds of the corresponding states and well above the thresholds of the last level of the Ni XIII target ion. Generally, a good agreement is obtained between our results and the earlier theoretical photoionization cross sections. Moreover, we have used two independent fully relativistic GRASP and FAC codes to calculate fine-structure energy levels, wavelengths, oscillator strengths, transitions rates among the lowest 48 levels belonging to the configuration（3s^23p^4, 3s3p^5, 3p^6, 3s^23p^33d） in Ni XIII. Additionally, radiative lifetimes of all the excited states of Ni XIII are presented. Our results of the atomic structure of Ni XIII show good agreement with other theoretical and experimental results available in the literature. A good agreement is found between our calculated lifetimes and the experimental *** present results are useful for plasma diagnostic of fusion and astrophysical plasmas.

Polyamide 6 underwent an efficient depolymerization in hydrophilic ionic liquids under microwave irradiation at 300C. The depolymerization completed within 60 min. Caprolactam was readily separated by simple extraction procedure and the ionic liquids were recovered and reused for several times. Addition of catalytic amounts of DMAP(N,N-dimethylaminopyridine) promoted the depolymerization *** present improved procedure provides a method to avoid direct distillation procedure, which consumes energy for the separation of caprolactam from ionic liquids. Although some contamination of ionic liquids was observed, the present procedure provides a new possibility for the use of ionic liquids for plastic chemical recycling from the viewpoint of development of an energy-saving methodology. Use of solubility switchable ionic liquids is also examined to explore a possibility for better separation although depolymerization did not work well.

A novel post-treatment method, including hard hairbrush and electrical treatment, is performed intentionally to improve the field emission capability and stability of screen-printed carbon nanotubes （CNTs）. Compared with untreated films, the field emission properties of the treated ones are greatly enhanced. Scanning electron microscopy （SEM） and Raman spectrum studies reveal that field emission properties are enhanced by two factors. Firstly, the improved field emission properties of CNT films can be attributed to the more active CNT surface by removing the organic material cover on the CNTs. Secondly, the gener- ation of a high density of structural defects and the lower resistance contact to the topside CNT emitters after treatment are all helpful to improving the field emission properties of the treated CNTs.

Orexin A attenuates the sleep-promoting effect of adenosine in the lateral hypothalamus of rats

Orexin neurons within the lateral hypothalamus play a crucial role in the promotion and maintenance of arousal. Studies have strongly suggested that orexin neurons are an important target in endogenous adenosine-regulated sleep homeostasis. Orexin A induces a robust increase in the firing activity of orexin neurons, while adenosine has an inhibitory effect. Whether the excitatory action of orexins in the lateral hypothalamus actually promotes wakefulness and reverses the sleep-producing effect of adenosine in vivo is less clear. In this study, electroencephalographic and electromyographic recordings were used to investigate the effects of orexin A and adenosine on sleep and wakefulness in rats. We found that microinjection of orexin A into the lateral hypothalamus increased wakefulness with a concomitant reduction of sleep during the first 3 h of post-injection recording, and this was completely blocked by a selective antagonist for orexin receptor 1, SB 334867. The enhancement of wakefulness also occurred after application of the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate in the first 3 h post-injection. However, in the presence of the NMDA receptor antagonist APV, orexin A did not induce any change of sleep and wakefulness in the first 3 h. Further, exogenous application of adenosine into the lateral hypothalamus induced a marked increase of sleep in the first 3-h post-injection. No significant change in sleep and wakefulness was detected after adenosine application followed by orexin A administration into the same brain area. Thesefindings suggest that the sleep-promoting action of adenosine can be reversed by orexin A applied to the lateral hypothalamus, perhaps by exciting glutamatergic input to orexin neurons via the action of orexin receptor 1.

AIM:To determine the splanchnic blood flow and oxygen uptake in healthy-subjects and patients and to relate the findings to ***:The total splanchnic blood flow (SBF) and oxygen uptake (SO2U) were measured in 20 healthy volunteers (10 women) and 29 patients with suspected chronic intestinal ischemia (15 women),age 40-85 years,prior to and after a standard *** method is based on the Fick principle using the continuous infusion of an indicator (99mTechnetium-labelled mebrofenin) and catheterization of an artery and the hepatic *** angiography of the intestinal arteries was performed during the same investigation.A whole-body dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scan was performedin healthy volunteers to determine body ***:Angiography revealed no atherosclerotic lesions in the intestinal *** mean baseline SBF was 1087mL/min (731-1390),and this value increased significantly to 1787 mL/min after the meal in healthy volunteers (P<0.001).The baseline SBF in patients was 1080 mL/min,which increased to 1718 mL/min postprandially (P<0.001).The baseline SBF was independent of age,sex,lean body mass and percentage of body *** mean meal-induced increase in SBF was equal to 282mL/min + 5.4mL/min × bodyweight,(P=0.025).The SO2U in healthy volunteers and patients was 50.7mL/min and 48.0mL/min,respectively,and these values increased to 77.5 mL/min and 75mL/min postprandially,*** baseline and postprandial SO2U were directly related to lean body *** and sex exerted no impact on ***:A direct correlation between body weight and the postprandial increase in SBF was *** effect of body weight should be considered in the diagnosis of chronic intestinal ischemia.

This paper investigates the correlation between stochastic resonance （SR） and the average phase-synchronization time which is between the input signal and the output signal in a bistable system driven by colour-correlated noises. The results show that the output signal-to-noise ratio can reach a maximum with the increase of the average phase- synchronization time, which may be helpful for understanding the principle of SR from the point of synchronization; however, SR and the maximum of the average phase-synchronization time appear at different optimal noise level, moreover, the effects on them of additive and multiplicative noise are different.

Stress-induced failure is among the most common causes of instability in Canadian deep underground *** stoping is the most widely practiced underground excavation method in these mines,and creates large stopes which are subjected to stress-induced *** probability of failure(POF)depends on many factors,of which the geometry of an open stope is especially *** this study,a methodology is proposed to assess the effect of stope geometrical parameters on the POF,using numerical *** ranges for each input parameter are defined according to previous surveys on open stope geometry in a number of Canadian underground mines.A Monte-Carlo simulation technique is combined with the finite difference code FLAC3D,to generate model realizations containing stopes with different geometrical *** probability of failure(POF)for different categories of stope geometry,is calculated by considering two modes of failure;relaxation-related gravity driven(tensile)failure and rock mass brittle *** individual and interactive effects of stope geometrical parameters on the POF,are analyzed using a general multi-level factorial ***,mathematical optimization techniques are employed to estimate the most stable stope conditions,by determining the optimal ranges for each stope’s geometrical parameter.
