Sensitivity analysis of parameters and contrasting performance of ground filtering algorithms with UAV photogrammetry-based and LiDAR point clouds

Most ground filtering algorithms are primarily designed for airborne LiDAR point cloud processing and their successful use in identifying ground points from photogrammetric point clouds remains questionable.We compared six ground filtering algorithms implemented in Metashape,ArcGIS,CloudCompare,LAStools,and PDAL.We used UAV photogrammetry-based(acquired under leaf-off conditions)and airborne LiDAR(leaf-on)point clouds of the same area to:(i)compare accuracy of generated DTMs;(ii)evaluate the effect of vegetation density and terrain slope on filtering accuracy;and(iii)assess which algorithm parameters have the greatest effect on the filtering accuracy.Our results show that the performance of filtering algorithms was affected by the point cloud type,terrain slope and vegetation cover.The results were generally better for LiDAR(RMSE 0.13–0.19 m)than for photogrammetric(RMSE 0.19–0.23 m)point clouds.The behavior in varying vegetation and terrain conditions was consistent for LiDAR point clouds.However,when applied on photogrammetric point clouds,the algorithms’behavior was inconsistent,especially in areas of steep slope(except for the Progressive Triangulated Irregular Network in LAStools).Parameters related to the selection of the initial minimum elevation ground points were the most influential in all algorithms and point clouds.

Characterizing and monitoring global landscapes using GlobeLand30 datasets:the first decade of the twenty-first century

Global land cover maps are important sources of information for a wide range of studies including land change analysis and climate change research.While the global land cover maps attempt to present a consistent and homogenous data in terms of the production process,the existing datasets offer coarse resolution data,e.g.1000 m for IGBP DISCover and 300 m for GlobeCover 2009 that is oftentimes challenging.Recently,GlobeLand30 data based on Landsat archive for two timestamps of 2000 and 2010 has been released.It presents a finer spatial resolution of 30 m,which provides numerous opportunities for a wide range of studies.The main objective of this study is to use this dataset for characterizing global land cover patterns,monitoring,and identifying extreme land change cases with their types and magnitude.The findings reveal massive land change patterns including deforestation,desertification,shrinkage of water bodies,and urbanization across the globe.The results and discussions of this research can help policy-makers,environmental planners,ecosystem services providers and climate change researchers to gain finer insights about the forms of global land change.Future research calls for further investigation of the underlying causes of the massive changes and their consequences on our ecosystems and human populations.

In this paper,GIS-based ordered weighted averaging(OWA)is applied to landslide susceptibility mapping(LSM)for the Urmia Lake Basin in northwest Iran.Nine landslide causal factors were used,whereby the respective parameters were extracted from an associated spatial database.These factors were evaluated,and then the respective factor weight and class weight were assigned to each of the associated factors using analytic hierarchy process(AHP).A landslide suscept-ibility map was produced based on OWA multicriteria decision analysis.In order to validate the result,the outcome of the OWA method was qualitatively evaluated based on an existing inventory of known landslides.Correspondingly,an uncertainty analysis was carried out using the Dempster-Shafer theory.Based on the results,very strong support was determined for the high susceptibility category of the landslide susceptibility map,while strong support was received for the areas with moderate susceptibility.In this paper,we discuss in which respect these results are useful for an improved understanding of the effectiveness of OWA in LSM,and how the landslide prediction map can be used for spatial planning tasks and for the mitigation of future hazards in the study area.

Impact of neighborhood features on housing resale prices in Zhuhai (China) based on an (M)GWR model

The paper aims at exploring the relationship between housing resale prices and neighborhood features in Zhuhai,as well as structure and location characteristics.Thirteen neighborhood features are collected to analyze their influence on average community-level apartment resale prices in 2018.Six neighbor-hood features,structural and location characteristics,are selected according to their statistical significance and multi-collinearity test results from an OLS model.Regression analysis is performed by OLS,GWR,and MGWR to compare their per-formance in housing price research at community level.The comparison of the three models also demonstrates that the GWR(66%)and MGWR(68%)models perform much better than OLS model(52%).MGWR is not significantly different from GWR in areas with few sample points,and the optimal bandwidth at different spatial scales is hard to be captured in a city-level study area.The regression parameter indicates that building age is the most important factor among all influen-cing factors.Proximity to schools and factories have positive and negative significant effects on housing resale prices,respectively.The spatial pattern of neighborhood features is also detected at town level.GWR and MGWR models accurately demonstrate local spatial heterogeneity of the housing resale market,which provides better results than the traditional OLS model in the goodness of fit and parameter estimates when spatial dependency is present.The results provide references for local planning departments,helping to reveal the compli-cated relationship and spatial patterns between housing price and determinants over space.

Assessing global Sentinel-2 coverage dynamics and data availability for operational Earth observation(EO)applications using the EO-Compass

Sentinel-2 scenes are increasingly being used in operational Earth observation(EO)applications at regional,continental and global scales,in near-real time applications,and with multi-temporal approaches.On a broader scale,they are therefore one of the most important facilitators of the Digital Earth.However,the data quality and availability are not spatially and temporally homogeneous due to effects related to cloudiness,the position on the Earth or the acquisition plan.The spatiotemporal inhomogeneity of the underlying data may therefore affect any big remote sensing analysis and is important to consider.This study presents an assessment of the metadata for all accessible Sentinel-2 Level-1C scenes acquired in 2017,enabling the spatio-temporal coverage and availability to be quantified,including scene availability and cloudiness.spatial exploratory analysis of the global,multi-temporal metadata also reveals that higher acquisition frequencies do not necessarily yield more cloud-free scenes and exposes metadata quality issues,e.***.systematically incorrect cloud cover estimation in high,nonvegetated altitudes.The continuously updated datasets and analysis results are accessible as a Web application called EO-Compass.It contributes to a better understanding and selection of Sentinel-2 scenes,and improves the planning and interpretation of remote sensing analyses.

Diet and habitat affinities in six raptor species in India

Background: Sympatric species adapt to, and temporally or geographically segregate access to similar limiting factors.Methods: We compared nesting habitat and diet affinities of six raptor species in central India between the years 20062015.Results: A large composition of reptiles in the diet was characteristic for Circaetus gallicus, Spilornis cheela and Elanus caeruleus, while Aquila fasciata, Falco chicquera and Nisaetus cirrhatus show a higher proportion of birds. Species with greatest similarity of diet were C. gallicus and S. cheela. Considering the environmental characterization of areas where raptors built the nest, some species were ecologically closer than others. N. cirrhatus and S. cheela were related to the presence of water bodies, dry deciduous forest and evergreen forests, while E. caeruleus and C. gallicus preferred more open habitats. A. fasciata bred either on cliffs or trees, F. chicquera on trees or mobile towers, and the other four species built their nests exclusively in trees.Conclusions: We conclude that although there was overlap in diet and nesting ecology for a number of species, the geographical separation likely limits competition for resources.

Urbanization effects on living organisms are spatially heterogeneous.Here we quantified the abundance of birds per tree in forested urban and rural habitats for 85,829 trees mainly in China and Europe.A population model was based on the assumption that:1)birds have a normally distributed habitat preference;2)an increase in population size linked to the habitat preference;3)a population size dependent on the habitat preference;and 4)the removal of a certain fraction of individuals giving rise to extinction.We tested for large-scale differences in the impact of urbanization on the frequency distribution of the difference in abundance between urban and rural habitats in China and parts of Europe.The difference in the frequency distribution of urban population density of birds in trees minus rural population density of birds in trees in China and Europe was statistically significant suggesting that the abundance of birds differed between trees in urban and rural habitats,but more so in China than in Europe.We hypothesize that more pronounced differences in China than in Europe may have arisen due to the Four Pests Campaign in 1958-1962 that resulted in death of hundreds of millions of birds(mainly tree sparrows Passer monfanus,but also numerous other less common species that were starting to become urbanized around 1960).Species that were less common in 1960 could not sustain reductions in population size in urban areas and hence these species are still rare or absent in urban areas today 60 years later.

Landslide inventory validation and susceptibility mapping in the Gerecse Hills, Hungary

Landslides pose a threat to property both in the populated and cultivated areas of the Gerecse Hills (Hungary). The currently available landslide inventory database holds the records from many sites in the area, but the database is out-of-date. Here we address the problem of revising the National Landslides Cadastre landslide inventory database by creating a landslide suscept-ibility map with a multivariate model based on likelihood ratio functions. The model is applied to the TanDEM-X DEM (0.4″ res.), the current landslide inventory of the area, and data acquired from geological maps. By comparing the distributions of four variables in the landslide and non-landslide area with grid computation methods, the model yields landslide susceptibility estimates for the study area. The estimations show to what extent a certain area is similar to the sample areas, therefore, its likelihood to be affected by landslides in the future. The accuracy of the model predictions was checked in the field and compared to the results of our previous study using the SRTM-1 DEM for a similar analysis. The model gave accurate estimates when certain correction measures were applied to the input datasets. The limitations of the model, the input datasets, and the suggested correction measures are also discussed.

Community in the information age： Exploring the social potential of web-based technologies in landscape architecture and community design

Critics have pointed at new technologies as cutprits in the decline of civic life, neighboring and social capital construction in Western societies. When applied to community design and ptanning processes, technologies can empower residents to actively engage in decision-making, foster connections across social groups, with positive consequences on life and sociatization in public spaces. What kind of participation do technotogies foster？ And is it the kind that bridges social and ideotogical divides？ The 2012 community design process for Hawthorne Park in Medford, Oregon illustrates many of the challenges and opportunities connected to the use of new technologies in design. In the process, technologies were instrumental in enlisting a larger-than-usual number of residents to participate in the design of the park. Blogs and online questionnaires were successful in gathering people＇s thoughts on the design choices being made, but also favored a limited, intermittent form of engagement. The results are synthesized in principles for the successful integration of web-based technologies in future community design efforts： adaptability, fuji participation, nuanced participation and the need for links to the physical realm.

Food preferences by birds using bird-feeders in winter： a large-scale experiment

Background: Intentional winter bird feeding in gardens is one of the most common interactions between birds and humans. Because feeding may have both desired effects(provisioning of nutritious food for under-nourished birds) and undesired effects(favouritism of competitively superior species, transmission of disease), management of supplementary sites should be optimized from an ecological and conservation perspective. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to experimentally test winter food preferences of birds, with underlying potential influence of habitat(rural vs. urban) on realised food preferences pattern.Methods: We conducted an experimental analysis of food preferences of wintering birds by provided bird-feeders in urban and rural environments across Poland. Data were collected twice during winter 2013–2014 across Poland, in total with 80 experimental trials.Results: Sunflower seeds were the most preferred food supplement both in urban and rural habitats, significantly more exploited than any other food simultaneously available in feeders(animal fat, millet seed and dry fruits of rowanberry). However, no significant differences were recorded between urban and rural habitats in use of food.Conclusions: The degree of use of a particular type of food at bird-feeders depended on the overall use of food in a bird-feeder—consumption of each of the four types of food was significantly positively correlated with that of the others, and it was positively correlated with the number of birds observed at the feeders.
