Sleep deprivation and associated factors among students of the Institute of Health in Jimma University, Southwest Ethiopia

Objective:Despite getting sufficient sleep being one of the most important things that we can do to keep our body and mind healthy,sleep deprivation has become a major public health *** study aimed to determine the prevalence of sleep deprivation and its associated factors among students of the Institute of Health in Jimma ***:An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted from April 10 to April 24 in *** were collected from 365 randomly selected participants and analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences(SPSS;version 23).Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify the factors associated with sleep *** level of significance was declared at a P-value of<***:A total of 365 participants participated,with a response rate of 97.6%.The study findings showed that 60.8%of students had sleep deprivation and 68.2%had sleep *** problems(adjusted odds ratio[AOR]=1.91[95%confidence interval{CI}=1.01–3.58]),alcohol consumption[AOR=0.42(95%CI=0.2–0.89)],cigarette smoking[AOR=0.31(95%CI=0.09–0.93)],khat chewing[AOR=0.47(95%CI=0.12–0.82)],use of an electronic device before bedtime[AOR=5.26(95%CI=1.78–15.52)],and cumulative grade point average(CGPA)[AOR=0.48(95%CI=0.27–0.83)]were significantly associated with sleep ***:Sleep deprivation was common in the study *** is mainly due to health problems,substance utilization,long-time use of an electronic device,and low ***,a strategy and system should be established to limit substance use,enhance proper use of electronic devices,and create awareness on the impact of nonoptimal sleep.

Irritable bowel syndrome(IBS)is a common gastrointestinal disorder with a high incidence in the general *** diagnosis of IBS is mainly based on exclusion of other intestinal conditions through the absence of inflammatory markers and specific *** current pharmacological treatment approaches available focus on reducing symptom severity while often limiting quality of life because of significant side *** has led to an effectiveness gap for IBS patients that seek further relief to increase their quality of *** and alternative medicines(CAM)have been associated with a higher degree of symptom management and quality of life in IBS *** the past decade,a number of important clinical trials have shown that specific herbal therapies(peppermint oil and Iberogast?),hypnotherapy,cognitive behavior therapy,acupuncture,and yoga present with improved treatment outcomes in IBS *** propose an integrative approach to treating the diverse symptoms of IBS by combining the benefits of and need for pharmacotherapy with known CAM therapies to provide IBS patients with the best treatment outcome *** steps in this direction are already being considered with an increasing number of practitioners recommending CAM therapies to their patients if pharmacotherapy alone does not alleviate symptoms sufficiently.

Dysphagia and daily oral fluids among cerebrovascular stroke patients:an theory-based nursing intervention protocol

Objective:To evaluate the improvement of dysphagia and the daily amounts of oral fluids served among people who had recently experienced a cerebrovascular stroke(CVS)after applying a nursing intervention ***:A quasi-experimental design was used to examine 60 stroke patients who were randomly and alternatively divided equally into a study group and a control *** Swallowing Screen(GUSS)and fluid balance chart were *** the first 24 h of a patient’s admission,expert nurses were trained in nursing intervention protocol to manage dysphagia and daily oral ***:Post-nursing intervention,the severity of dysphagia decreased among the study group more than in the control ***,the study group began taking greater amounts of fluids by the oral route than before the nursing ***:A standardized nursing intervention protocol is needed to decrease the severity of dysphagia after CVS and increase the amount of daily oral *** presence of a structured theory-based nursing intervention protocol for dysphagia management will greatly contribute to decreasing the consequences of dysphagia after CVS,and can also be expected to attenuate the effects of aspiration pneumonia,dehydration,and malnutrition;further,it also increases adherence to the protocol by both nurses and patients.

Relationship between Self-care and Hand Foot Syndrome Specific Quality of Life in Cancer Patients

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe adherence to self-care for hand-foot syndrome (HFS) and the relationship between self-care and health-related quality of life (QOL). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 105 consecutive outpatients with HFS. To assess self-care for HFS and QOL, the participants were asked to complete self-care and HFS-14 (hand-foot syndrome specific QOL) questionnaires, respectively. Multiple regression models were used to identify the relationship between self-care and QOL. Results: Adherence to self-care for HFS was low, less than 50% for most of the items. Multivariate analysis revealed that poorer self-care (βs = -0.19;P = 0.03), depressive symptoms (βs = 0.43;P βs = 0.20;P = 0.04) were independent predictors of poorer QOL scores. Conclusions: We have identified a need for further research to develop effective programs of self-care in HFS.

Factors influencing discharge readiness among patients with mild-to-moderate ischemic stroke:a cross-sectional study

Objective:To describe discharge readiness and determine whether self-efficacy,social support,and the quality of discharge teaching can predict discharge readiness among patients with mild-to-moderate ischemic ***:A total of 120 patients with mild-to-moderate ischemic stroke were recruited using simple random *** instruments,namely,the Demographic Data Questionnaire,the Chinese version of the Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale(RHDS_C),the SelfEfficacy for Managing Chronic Disease 6-Item Scale(SES6),the Perceived Social Support Scale(PSSS),and the Quality of Discharge Teaching Scale(QDTS),were used for data *** statistics and standard multiple linear regression were used for data ***:The mean score of discharge readiness among patients with mild-to-moderate ischemic stroke was at a moderate level(M=7.6,SD=0.92),and 75.8%of the participants felt ready for *** multiple linear regression revealed that selfefficacy(β=0.62,P<0.001)and the quality of discharge teaching(β=0.28,P<0.001)were the influencing ***,social support could not predict discharge readiness *** the factors combined explained 64.9%of the variance in discharge ***:Intervention programs aimed at improving self-efficacy and the quality of discharge teaching may be helpful in promoting discharge readiness in patients with mild-to-moderate ischemic stroke,especially in coping ability.

Translation and validation of the Greek chronic liver disease questionnaire

AIM:To translate into Greek and validate the chronic liver disease questionnaire (CLDQ).METHODS:Two hundred and six consecutive adult patients with the diagnosis of a chronic liver disease from 2 general hospitals in Athens were enrolled in the study from May to September *** order to assess their quality of life (QOL) the CLDQ was *** instrument was translated from English,back translated and reviewed in focus groups within the framework of a large multicenter *** measurements that were performed included:2 independent sample t tests,oneway analysis of variance,reliability coefficients,explanatory factor analysis using a varimax rotation and the principal components ***:One hundred and twenty five (61%) patients were men,half were aged 40-59 years and > 33% were > 60 years *** the patients,48 (23%) were hospitalized and 97 (47%) were cirrhotic according to the Child-Pugh *** internal consistency of the Greek CLDQ version using Cronbach's alpha coefficient was found to be *** factor analysis identified 7 domains accounting for 65% of the variance of CLDQ items and only partially overlapping with those found in the original *** area under the receiver operating characteristics curve was calculated at 0.813 and the logistic estimate for the threshold score of 167.50 provided a sensitivity of 74.3% and a specificity of 71.6% for the ***:Our data confirmed the validity of the Greek version of the CLDQ in identifying the QOL among patients with chronic liver disease.

The prevalence,associated factors,and impact of urinary incontinence in pregnant and postpartum women in Nanjing,China:A cross-sectional study

Objective:Urinary incontinence(UI)is highly prevalent in antenatal and postnatal women while the prevalence of UI varied largely from 3.84%to 38.65%.This study was to assess the prevalence of UI,the associated factors,and the impact of UI on daily life in pregnant and postpartum women in Nanjing,***:The prevalence of UI and the impact of UI on life were assessed by the validated Chinese version of International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-urinary incontinence-short form and the validated Chinese version of urinary incontinence quality of *** associated factors were estimated by using logistic regression ***:UI affected 37.80%of pregnant women and 16.41%of postpartum women of the study *** the pregnant participants,the prevalence rates of stress UI,urge UI,and mixed UI were 25.77%,4.47%,and 7.10%,*** the postpartum women,the prevalence rates of stress UI,urge UI,and mixed UI were 11.15%,1.92%,and 2.69%,*** both pregnant women and postpartum women,vaginal delivery had significantly increased the odds of reporting UI(p=0.007,p=0.003,respectively).The impact of UI on daily life was significantly greater in postpartum women compared to pregnant women especially in social embarrassment(p=0.000).Conclusion:The prevalence rates of UI were high in pregnant women in Nanjing,*** delivery significantly increased odds of reporting *** has a great impact on pregnant and postpartum women’s life,especially in social embarrassment.

Theoretical knowledge and psychomotor skill acquisition of basic life support training programme among secondary school students

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study is to evaluate the theoretical knowledge and psychomotor skill acquisition of basic life support(BLS) by a group of secondary school students in Nigeria pre and post BLS training. METHODS: This was quasi-experimental study design with 210 participants. They were taught on adult BLS and all the participants practiced BLS on a Resusci-Anne manikin immediately after the training. Data were collected using American Heart Association(AHA) structured questionnaire and psychomotor skills checklist for BLS at baseline, and post BLS ***: The pre-training knowledge score was 1.9±1.4. This increased after the BLS training to 11.4±2.4, and the mean difference between the pre and post BLS training scores was 9.48571. Pre-training psychomotor skill score was 0.00±0.00, this increased to 8.9±1.9 after the training, and the mean difference was 8.90000. The knowledge and psychomotor skill difference between pre and post BLS training was signifi cant(P<0.000).CONCLUSION: Most Nigerian secondary school students were not knowledgeable about BLS. Therefore, there is need for the creation of more awareness among the students.

Objective:To describe the self-management(SM)behavior among persons with mild-to-moderate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD),and it examines the correlation between COPD knowledge,self-efficacy,perceived social support,and SM behavior among persons with mild-to-moderate COPD in Wenzhou,***:A simple random sampling technique was used to recruit 121 persons with mild-to-moderate COPD who visited the respiratory outpatient department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University in Wenzhou,*** instruments include a demographic data questionnaire,COPD SM scale,COPD knowledge questionnaire,6-item chronic disease self-efficacy scale,and perceived social suppor t *** statistics and Pearson's Correlation were used for data ***:The findings show that the mean score of COPD SM scale was 2.70(SD=0.45).The Pearson correlation analysis revealed that the COPD knowledge(r=0.47,P<0.001),self-efficacy(r=0.28,P=0.001),and perceived social support(r=0.48,P<0.001)were positively correlated to the COPD SM behavior among persons with mild-to-moderate COPD in Wenzhou,***:The findings indicate that disease knowledge,self-efficacy,and perceived social support were related to SM behavior in persons with mild-to-moderate COPD,which provides a theoretical basis for developing SM interventions for persons with mildto-moderate COPD and improving this population's SM behavior.
