Floods have caused significant human and economic losses in the Cazones River Basin, located on the Gulf of Mexico. Despite this knowledge, steps towards the design and implementation of an early warning system for the Cazones are still a pending task. In this study we contributed by establishing a hydrological scheme for forecasting mean daily discharges in the Cazones Basin. For these purposes, we calibrated, validated and compared the HyMod model (HM) which is physics-based, and an autoregressive-based model coupled with the Discrete Kalman Filter (ARX-DKF). The ability of both models to accurately predict discharges proved satisfactory results during the validation period with RMSEHyMOD = 2.77 [mm/day];and RMSEARX-DKF = [2.38 mm/day]. Further analysis based on a Streamflow Assimilation Ratio (SAR) revealed that both models underestimate the discharges in a similar proportion. This evaluation also showed that, under the most common conditions, the simpler stochastic model (ARX-DKF) performs better;however, under extreme hydrological conditions the deterministic HM model reveals a better performance. These results are discussed under the context of future applications and additional requirements needed to implement an early warning hydrologic system for the Cazones Basin.

The global outbreak of coronavirus infectious disease-2019(COVID-19)draws attentions in the transport and spread of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)in aerosols,wastewater,surface water and solid *** pathogens eventually enter the subsurface system,e.g.,soils in the vadose zone and groundwater in the aquifers,they might survive for a prolonged period of time owing to the uniqueness of subsurface *** addition,pathogens can transport in groundwater and contaminate surrounding drinking water sources,possessing long-term and concealed risks to human *** work critically reviews the influential factors of pathogen migration,unravelling the impacts of pathogenic characteristics,vadose zone physiochemical properties and hydrological variables on the migration of typical pathogens in subsurface *** assessment algorithm and two rating/weighting schemes are proposed to evaluate the migration abilities and risks of pathogens in subsurface *** there is still no evidence about the presence and distribution of SARS-CoV-2 in the vadose zones and aquifers,this study also discusses the migration potential and behavior of SARS-CoV-2 viruses in subsurface environment,offering prospective clues and suggestions for its potential risks in drinking water and effective prevention and control from hydrogeological points of view.

A comprehensive mathematical model is developed to simulate the interactions of the complex processes that take place in typical catalytic chemical reactors. This mathematical model includes correlations representing various modes of mass transport and chemical reactions. To illustrate the application and value of this approach for reactor optimizations, the model is applied to the case of series reactions with a desirable intermediate compound and the risk of degradation of this compound if the process conditions are not optimized. The modeling results show that in such cases, which are very common in practice, replacing the conventional uniform catalyst distribution with a novel non-uniform distribution will significantly improve the performance of the reactor and the production of the desirable compound. Various catalyst distribution options are compared, and a novel non-uniform loading of catalyst is identified that gives a much better performance compared to the conventional approach. The model is versatile and useful for both the design as well as the optimization of the catalytic fixed-bed reactors in a wide variety of reactor and reaction conditions.

Improvement of nutritional and organoleptic quality of fruits is a key goal in current strawberry breeding *** ratio of sugars to acids is a determinant factor contributing to fruit liking,although different sugars and acids contribute in varying degrees to this complex trait.A segregating F1 population of 95 individuals,previously characterized for several fruit quality characters,was used to map during 2 years quantitative trait loci(QTL)for 50 primary metabolites,L-ascorbic acid(L-AA)and other related traits such as soluble solid content(SSC),titratable acidity(TA),and pH.A total of 133 mQTL were detected above the established thresholds for 44 *** 12.9%of QTL were detected in the 2 years,suggesting a large environmental influence on primary metabolite *** objective of this study was the identification of key metabolites that were associated to the overall variation in SSC and *** it was observed in previous studies,a number of QTL controlling several metabolites and traits were co-located in homoeology group V(HG V).mQTL controlling a large variance in raffinose,sucrose,succinic acid,and L-AA were detected in approximate the same chromosomal regions of different homoeologous linkage groups belonging to HG *** genes for selected mQTL are proposed based on their co-localization,on the predicted function,and their differential gene expression among contrasting F1 progeny ***-seq analysis from progeny lines contrasting in L-AA content detected 826 differentially expressed genes and identified Mannose-6-phosphate isomerase,FaM6PI1,as a candidate gene contributing to natural variation in ascorbic acid in strawberry fruit.

Aims In plants,resource allocation to growth and reproduction may depart from trade-off expectations if(i)investment in growth and reproduction relies on different resource pools,(ii)allocation to reproduction is dependent upon reaching some growth threshold or(iii)reproduction is developmentally linked to growth,both functions relying on the same resource *** examined the effects of enhanced resource level on patterns of resource allocation to growth and reproduction in holm oak(Quercus ilex ***),a Mediterranean evergreen *** In the experimental year(2003),we manipulated the amount of soil nutrients in autumn(to increase nutrient uptake during shoot elongation in the following spring)and soil water in summer(to increase water uptake during acorn growth).Indicators of growth and male and female reproduction were estimated in the preexperimental(2002),experimental(2003)and post-experimental(2004)*** Findings Fertilized trees produced significantly longer shoots,but the number of female flowers per shoot was not affected by *** production of male catkins was also enhanced by *** did not affect the production of female flowers or abortion *** and female reproduction showed no consistent relationship in untreated trees,but resource addition elicited a growth-female reproduction trade-off in the experimental *** sign of this significant relationship changed in the post-experimental year,indicating the existence of lagged effects of resource manipulation on acorn ***,patterns of allocation to growth and reproduction varied as a function of sex,resource availability and year,a result consistent with extreme allocational plasticity in holm oak.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of copper and iron on acidogenic biomass immobilized on clinoptilolite in an anaerobic packed bed reactor. Copper and iron were fed to the reactor at concentrations of 100 and 300 mg·L-1, respectively. Both metal ions had insignificant inhibitory effect over the metabolism of the biomass, specifically, on substrate consumption and production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). The microstructural characterization of the biofilm by Scanning Electron Microscopy showed no effect on the morphology of the microorganisms after the metals treatment. Copper and iron removal was also measured in the reactor, achieving a breakthrough time of 3 days, during which removal efficiencies were higher than 90%. It was also observed that the biomass had a greater affinity for copper. The results indicate that acidogenic biomass can be used effectively as a sorbent agent. The pollution of river-streams with heavy metals—mainly copper and iron—was one of the most compelling motivations for conducting this investigation. The San Pedro River Basin, a trans-boundary river that originates near the mining town of Cananea, Sonora, México, and flows to Arizona, USA, exemplifies this environmental issue.

Chromate conversion treatments have been widely used due to their excellent corrosion resistance properties;however, their use is increasingly restricted because of the highly toxic chromic acid solutions required, with consequent effluent disposal and ecological problems. The removal of these toxic chemicals is considered a priority within most of the developed countries. In this work, the corrosion resistance of different alternative pretreatments applied on electrogalvanised steel sheet: 1) Cr(III) and Zr complexes layer, 2) Ce(III) layer, 3) Ce(III)/Ce(IV) double layer, 4) Cr(VI) chromating was investigated, and its results compared with those from the tests performed using bare electrogalvanized steel sheets as a substrate. These samples were exposed to aerated 0.05 mol/L NaCl or 0.1 mol/L Na2SO4 solutions. The electrochemical behavior of samples was studied by electrochemical techniques. For three days of immersion in the solution test, the experimental results have shown that, compared with the Cr(VI) protective properties, the Cr(III) + Zr complex layer presented similar performance. Even though the initial corrosion resistance was offered by the Ce(III) and Ce(VI)/Ce(III) conversion coatings was relatively good, it quickly decreased as a function of the exposure time.

Ag-CdO复合材料由于其优异的电气和力学性能,仍然是低压应用中最常用的电触头材料之一。然而,考虑到由于镉的毒性而对其应用的限制,有必要寻找可取代这种复合材料的替代材料。本研究以Ag-Zn固溶体为原料,采用热机械化学工艺制备Ag-ZnO合金。在138°C、1200 cm^3/min的氧气流下,在改进的球磨机中对合金样品进行热机械化学处理3 h,利用X射线衍射技术、场发射扫描电镜和透射电镜对合成材料的显微组织和相演变进行研究。结果表明,低温下的热机械化学处理可使Ag-Zn固溶体在短时间内完全氧化。这种新的合成方法可以制备出纳米ZnO相均匀分布的Ag-ZnO复合材料,而这是用传统的材料加工方法无法实现的。考虑到改善电触头材料性能的根本途径在于实现Ag基体中第二相的均匀分散,这一新工艺为Ag-ZnO复合材料取代非环境友好的Ag-CdO提供了可能。
