Hydrogeophysical and Structural Investigations Using VES: A Case Study of Dosso Region in the Southwestern Part of the Meso-Cenozoic Iullemmeden Basin (Southwestern Niger)

A regional study connecting geolelectrical surveys with geology and hydrogeology was carried out in the western part of the Iullemmeden basin, precisely in the Dosso region in Niger. One hundred and four (104) vertical electrical sounds have been realized, among them nineteen representative were thus be used as parametric surveys. The local resistivity values of the geological formations of Quaternary range from 100 Ω⋅m to 1000 Ω⋅m (sands and lateritic sandstones). The Oligo-Miocene formation of the Continental terminal (Ct) shows resistivity values ranging from 1 to 5 Ω⋅m (brackish groundwaters) to 1500 Ω⋅m (clay sandstones) while the Upper Cretaceous formation of the Continental “hamadien” (Ch) indicates values ranging from 20 Ω⋅m (sandy clay) to 5000 Ω⋅m (clayey sandstones). The geological formations of Paleocene have values from 2 Ω⋅m (marls) to 60 Ω⋅m (calcareous marl), while the Precambrian basement exhibits values of granite around 300 Ω⋅m to 60,000 Ω⋅m. The update of the structural settings reveals many faults in the study area which explain both the shape of the basin and the geometry of the aquifers. Tectonics is also consistent with the hydraulic characteristics of aquifers. In addition, brackish groundwaters were identified as perched aquifer groundwaters in different depths in Dosso region. They probably come from the marine brines during the regression of the Paleocene Sea.

Geophysical fluid dynamics(GFD) is an interdisciplinary field that studies the large-scale motion of fluids in the natural world. With a wide range of applications such as weather forecasts and climate prediction, GFD employs various research approaches including in-situ observations, satellite measurements, numerical simulations, theoretical analysis, artificial intelligence, and physical model experiments in laboratory. Among these approaches, rotating tank experiments provide a valuable tool for simulating naturally-occurring fluid motions in laboratories. With proportional scaling and proper techniques, scientists can reproduce multi-scale physical processes of stratified fluids in the rotation system, which allows for the simulation of essential characteristics of fluid motions in the atmosphere and oceans. In this review, rotating tanks of various scales in the world are introduced, as these tanks have been actively used to explore fundamental scientific questions in ocean and atmosphere dynamics. To illustrate the GFD experiments, three representative cases are presented to demonstrate the frontier achievements in the the GFD study by using rotating tank experiments: mesoscale eddies in the ocean,convection processes, and plume dynamics. Detailed references for the experimental procedures are provided. Future studies are encouraged to further explore the utilization of rotating tanks with improvements in experimental design and integration of other research methods. This is a promising direction of GFD to help enhance our understanding of the complex nature of fluid motions in the natural world and to address the challenges posed by global environmental changes.

Mucosal immune responses to Ichthyophthirius multifiliis in the ocular mucosa of rainbow trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss,Walbaum),an ancient teleost fish

The eye,as a specialized visual organ,is directly exposed to the external environment,and,therefore,it faces constant chal-lenges from external pathogenic organisms and *** the ocular mucosa(OM)of mammals,mucosal-associated lymphoid tissues(MALTs)constitute the primary line of ***,the immune defense role of the OM remains unknown in aquatic *** gain insights into the immune processes within the OM of teleost fish,we developed an infection model of rainbow trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss)OM using a parasite,Ichthyophthirius multifiliis(Ich).Immunofluorescence,qPCR,and H&E staining revealed that Ich successfully infiltrates the OM of rainbow trout,leading to pathological struc-tural changes,as evidenced by A&B ***,the qPCR results indicate an up-regulation of immune-related genes following Ich infection in the ***,transcriptome analyses were conducted to detect immune responses and impairments in eye function within the OM of rainbow trout with Ich *** results of the transcriptome analysis that Ich infection can cause an extensive immune response in the OM,ultimately affecting ocular *** the best of our knowledge,our findings represent for the first time that the teleost OM could act as an invasion site for parasites and trigger a strong mucosal immune response to parasitic infection.

Phosphorus deficiency affects multiple macromolecular biosynthesis pathways of Thalassiosira weissflogii

Phosphorus（P） is one of the key nutrients for the growth of phytoplankton. In this study, we used a method coupling label-free quantitation with liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry（LFQ–LC–MS/MS） to track the change of relative protein abundance between P-replete and P-deficient treatments in a non-model diatom, Thalassiosira weissflogii. Out of the 631 proteins identified, 132 were found to have significant changes in abundance（〉1.5 folds） between the two treatments, especially those proteins involved in macromolecular biosynthesis pathways. For example, the up-regulation of sulfolipid biosynthesis protein in the P-deficient culture suggested a switch from using phospholipids to sulfolipids. In addition, the ribosome subunits and tRNA synthetases were down-regulated, which might explain the decrease in protein content in the P-deficient culture. A vacuolar sorting receptor homologous protein was found to be 9.2-folds up-regulated under P-deficiency, indicating an enhancement in the vacuolar sorting pathway for protein degradation. Our results show that T. weissflogii has sophisticated responses in multiple macromolecular metabolism pathways under P-deficiency, a mechanism which can be critical for this species to survive under various levels of P availability in the environment

Comprehensive understanding on sources of high levels of fine particulate nitro-aromatic compounds at a coastal rural area in northern China

Nitro-aromatic compounds(NACs)are among the major components of brown carbon(BrC)in the atmosphere,causing negative impacts on regional climate,air quality,and ecological *** to the extensive origins,it is still a challenge to figure out the contributions and originating regions for different sources of atmospheric ***,field observations on fine particulate NACs were conducted at a coastal rural area in Qingdao,China in the winter of 2018 and *** mean total concentrations of fine particulate nitro-aromatic compounds were 125.0±89.5 and 27.7±21.1 ng/m^(3)in the winter of 2018 and 2019,*** the measured eleven NACs,nitrophenols and nitrocatechols were the most abundant *** characteristics and correlation analysis showed that humidity and anthropogenic primary emissions had significant influences on the NAC *** this study,two tracing methods of the improved spatial concentration weighted trajectory(SCWT)model and the receptor model of positive matrix factorization(PMF)were combined to comprehensively understand the origins of NACs in fine particles at coastal *** major sources were identified,including coal combustion,biomass burning,vehicle exhaust,and secondary ***,coal combustion was responsible for about half of the observed nitro-aromatic compounds,followed by biomass burning(~30%).The results by SCWT demonstrated that the coal combustion dominated NACs mainly originated from the Shandong peninsula and the areas to the north and southwest,while those dominated by biomass burning primarily came from local Qingdao and the areas to the west.

Near-bed sediment transport in a heavily modified coastal plain estuary

Numerous estuaries of the world have been strongly modified by human *** interferences can make great adjustments of not only sediment transport processes,but also the collective behavior of the *** paper provides a typical case of a heavily modified coastal plain estuary of Sheyang on the China coast,where a sluice barrage was built in 1956 to stop the intrusions of storm surges and saline *** sets of instrumented tripods were simultaneously deployed along a cross-shore transect to continuously observe near-bed flow currents and sediment *** in-situ surveys lasted over a spring and neap tide cycle when a strong wind event occurred in the neap *** of flows and sediment transport between tide-dominated and wind-dominated conditions demonstrated the important role of episodic wind events in flows and sediment *** wind-induced currents,bottom stresses,and sediment transport rates were significantly greater when wind was present than corresponding quantities induced by the *** long-shore sediment transport induced by winds exceeds the cross-shore component,especially near the river mouth *** results indicate the noticeable importance of wave-dominated coastal processes in shaping topographic features.A regime shift of estuarine evolution under highly intense human forcing occurs from fluvial to marine *** finding suggests that the management strategy of the estuarine system should focus on the restoration of estuarine processes,rather than the present focus on inhibition of marine dynamics.

Isolation and Experimental Study on Bacteriostasis of Bacillus haynesii

This experiment aims to isolate and inhibit three bacteria strains to provide candidate strains for the development and application of *** bacterial morphological identification,16S rDNA sequence alignment,and genetic evolution analysis,three strains were identified as Bacillus haynesii,named HP01,HD02,and *** biosurfactant activity tests,C-TAB tests,hemolysis tests,and antibacterial activity analyses,the results showed that all three strains of *** exhibited significant biosurfactant ***,the solutions of the three strains demonstrated a pronounced antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus *** resistance and safety of commonly used drugs were evaluated using the tablet diffusion method and a mouse feeding *** results indicated that the three strains were not resistant to commonly used antibacterial drugs,and the oral bacterial solution was not pathogenic and had high safety in *** study concluded that all three *** strains met the basic conditions for use,with *** HP01 being the most promising candidate.
