How Do Urbanization and Urban Agglomeration Affect CO2 Emissions in South Asia? Testing Non-Linearity Puzzle with Dynamic STIRPAT Model

The issue of urbanization has gained much importance over the last few decades due to its significant influence on economic growth and environmental quality, especially in developing countries. The non-linearity puzzle has been a long-debated issue, and prior studies provide mixed evidence. This study addresses the issue of urbanization using the measure of urban agglomeration and investigates the non-linear relation between urbanization and CO2emissions at the regional level. The South Asian region represents approximately one-fourth of the world population and its urbanization needs to be addressed properly. This paper uses the annual data over the period of 1974–2014 for four South Asian countries, namely, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. The panel cointegration tests establish the long-run relation between urbanization, urban agglomeration, economic growth, trade openness, energy consumption, financial development,and CO2emissions. The fully modified ordinary least squares（FMOLS） model further confirms the existence of Environmental Kuznets Curve（EKC） in South Asia. Moreover, urbanization has an inverted U-shaped relation with CO2emissions, while urban agglomeration has a Ushaped nexus with CO2emissions for overall sample. The bidirectional causal relationship has also been confirmed between urbanization and CO2emissions, between urban agglomeration and CO2emissions, between financial development and CO2emissions both in the long-run and short-run. On the other hand, unidirectional causality runs from economic growth, trade openness, and energy consumption to CO2emissions in the long-run. The rising trend of urban agglomeration in metropolitan cities in South Asia is adversely affecting the environment. Thecurrent study has implications for policymakers and respective governments to adhere to more stringent urban planning.

This study provides an economics assessment of various food safety measures in China. A choice experiment approach is used to elicit Chinese consumer preferences for various food safety attributes using data from a 2008 urban consumer survey. An alternative welfare calculation is used to model aggregate market impacts of select food safety measures. Our results show that the largest welfare gains are found in the current government-run certiifcation program. The implementation of a third-party certiifcation system, a traceability network and a product label would generate signiifcant value and would help reduce current system inefifciencies in China. This study builds on previous research and provides an alternative approach for calculating consumer valuation of safety and quality attributes that can be used to estimate aggregate economic and welfare impacts.

A theoretical framework based on information and embeddedness is constructed to analyze the micro structure of the impact of heterogeneous social capital on corporate performance. It is empirically tested based on data collected from a sample of 155 Chinese firms. Results indicate that hierarchical social capital has a positive association with corporate market power but little impact on corporate operational efficiency. Furthermore, social capital can promote operational efficiency but contribute little to corporate market power. There is a complementary structure between the two types of heterogeneous social capital. The embedded inertia of social capital into institutional environment is negatively related with corporate performance. From the perspective of economic transition, firms in developed regions rely far more on hierarchical social capital to acquire market power than firms in developing areas.

Starting with the many-body SchrSdinger Hamiltonian in R2, we prove that the ground state energy of a two-dimensional interacting Bose gas with the pairwise attractive interaction approaches to the minimum of the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional in the mean- field regime, as the particle number N → ∞ and however the scattering length → 0. By fixing N｜k｜, this leads to the mean-field approximation of Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interactions in R^2.

Ranking and rating individuals is a fundamental problem in multiple comparisons. One of the most well-known approaches is the Plackett-Luce model, in which the ordering is decided by the maximum likelihood estimator. However, the maximum likelihood estimate(MLE) does not exist when some individuals are never ranked lower than others or lose all their races. In this note, we proposed a penalized likelihood method to address this problem. As the penalized parameter goes to zero, the penalized MLE converges to the original MLE. Further, there exists a critical point in which the penalized likelihood ranking is independent of the choice of the penalized parameter. Several numerical examples are provided.

The waiting spectra of the sets consisting of pairs of sequences with prescribed quantitative waiting time indicators are determined. More precisely,let R(x,y) and R(x,y) be the lower and upper quantitative waiting time indicators of y by x respectively in the symbolic space Σm(integer m 2) and define the level sets Sα,β={(x,y)∈Σ2m:R(x,y)=α,R(x,y)=β},where 0αβ∞,it is shown that the sets Sα,βare all of Hausdorff dimension ***,some further extensions of this result are also made.

Impact of climate-smart agricultural technology on multidimensional poverty in rural Ethiopia

A large body of empirical literature showed that the adoption of agricultural technologies reduces poverty. However, dominants of those studies so far used one-dimensional income or expenditure-based measures of poverty which may not reflect other types of deprivations. Therefore, the major objective of this study is to examine the impact of adopting climate-smart agricultural technology, which refers to a joint application of row planting methods and the use of chemical fertilizers, on the multidimensional poverty status of rural households in Ethiopia. To estimate the impact of the stated technologies, this study employs propensity score matching and endogenous switching regression methods. To measure the multidimensional poverty index, the study also uses the Alkire and Foster counting approach. Using the Ethiopian Socioeconomic Survey(ESS), collected in 2015-Wave 3, the results of the study show that the adoption of these technologies reduces deprivation score and one of its component, the standard of living part. Regionally, a high reduction in deprivation is observed in Amhara and Oromiya regions. The results also show that the impact is significantly higher in severely deprived households. It is also observed that the reduction in multidimensional poverty due to the technology is through an increase in income/consumption via improvement in production gain. The impact channels more through the non-food expenditure pathway. Finally, this study also sheds light on the effects that technology adoption has on multidimensional poverty reduction.

This paper assesses the relationship between farmer characteristics and the degree to which nine soil and water conservation practices (SWCPs) are adopted by 300 maize farmers in Techiman Municipality,*** were surveyed for their adoption of nine SWCPs,and 24 other characteristics including demographics,socio-economic factors,risk factors and costs of *** soil and water conservation practices (SWCPs) in sub-Saharan Africa such as Ghana are important because they have positive effects on yield,increase sustainability of farming,stop degradation and reduce soil *** adoption of sustainable soil and water conservation practices in the agricultural industry of Ghana has been *** study aims to explain differences in farmer adoption of SWCPs,by assessing factors that vary with the number of different SWCPs used by ***,the Poisson model was *** results show that farmer's household size,farm size,access to credit services and formal training of maize farmer have a positive significant association with the number of soil and water conservation practices adopted by maize farmers while distance to nearest output market,distance to input center,access to extension services,and risk of pest and diseases have a negative significant association with the number of soil and water conservation practices adopted by maize farmers at 5% significance *** study concludes that any further research in Techiman Municipality on soil and water conservation practices should acknowledge the mixture of personal and demographic,institutional,socio-economic and risk *** suggests that agricultural polities formulated by the government should be aimed at supporting maize farmers to have access to extension service contact for frequent disseminating of agricultural technology information which is likely to increase the rate of adoption of soil and water conservation practices.
