Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging in brain white matter diseases

Objective To evaluate the usefulness of diffusion tensor MR imaging in brain white matter diseases. Methods A combined conventional and diffusion tensor MRI were obtained from 10 multiple sclerosis ,10 multiple lacunar infarction,3 cysticercosis,1 angiitis ,1 morphinist and 10 healthy control volunteers. After obtaining mean diffusivity (D) and fractional anisotropy images and image coregistration, the correlations of the lesions and the white matter pathways were investigated. D and AI values were measured form four big lesions which can be seen in T2WI and compared to contralateral white matter. Also D and AI value of four different anatomic locations of normal appearing white matter regions were measured in all patients and controls. Results Whereas the lesions of infarction, cysticercosis and angiitis were in and outside the white matter pathways, all plaques of multiple sclerosis were inside the whit matter pathways. The brain white matter lesions by 1 morphinist were beside the lateral ventricle with big patchy appearance, which was partly inside white matter. For MS, D value was higher in lesions than control white matter. But for other diseases, D value could be seen higher or lower compared to healthy side. AI values were lower in all lesions. D value was higher and AI was lower in normal appearing brain white matter when comparing MS to other cases or healthy control volunteers. Conclusion Diffusion tensor MR images can determine the correlations of the lesions and brain white matter pathways. The changes of D and AI values can improve specificity in differential diagnoses though quantitatively analyzing the tissue damage in lesions and normal appearing brain white matter.

BACKGROUND: Auditory steady-state evoked response (ASSR) is one of the new objective electrophysiological methods to test hearing in infants. It can provide a reliable and complete audiogram with specific frequency to help the hearing diagnosis and rehabilitation of hearing and languaging following auditory screening. OBJECTIVE: To compare the response threshold of ASSR with auditory threshold of visual reinforcement audiometry (VRA) in infants failed in the hearing screening for investigating their hearing loss. DESIGN: A comparative observation. SETTINGS: Maternal and child health care hospitals of Guangdong province, Shunde city, Nanhai city and Huadu district. PARTICIPANTS: Totally 321 infants of 0-3 years undergoing ASSR test were selected from the Hearing Center of Guangdong Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital from January 2002 to December 2004. Informed consents were obtained from their guardians. There were 193 cases (60.2%) of 0-6 months, 31 cases (9.7%) of 7-12 months, 17 cases (5.3%) of 13-18 months, 14 cases (4.4%) of 19-24 months, 33 cases of 25-30 months, and 33 cases (10.2%) of 31-36 months. METHODS: ① The 321 infants failed in the hearing screening were tested under sleeping status, the ranges of response threshold distribution in ASSR of different frequencies were analyzed in each age group. ② The infants above 2 years old were also tested with VRA, and their response thresholds were compared between VRA and ASSR. ③ Evaluative standards: The response threshold was 91 dB for extremely severe hearing loss. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: ① ASSR results of the infants failed in the screening; ② Proportion of cases of each response threshold in each age group; ③ Comparison of ASSR response thresholds and VRA auditory thresholds in the infants of 2-3 years old. Aims: The heritability of aerobic power and of the response to physical training has been shown in healthy subjects. β 1-Adrenergic receptor(β 1AR) function affects exercise performance. This study aims to investigate whether the Ser49Gly and Gly389Arg polymorphisms of the β 1AR gene or their haplotypes are associated with aerobic power or its response to physical training in coronary artery disease(CAD). Methods and results: Nine hundred and thirty-five biologically unrelated Caucasian patients with CAD who had exercised until exhaustion during graded bicycle testing at baseline and after completion of 3 months of exercise training from 1990 to 2001(n=1095) were eligible for inclusion in the CAREGENE(CArdiac rehabilitation and GENetics of Exercise performance) study. Polymorphisms were detected using the invader assay(ThirdWave TechnologiesTM,Madison,Wisconsin, USA). Patients with the Gly49Gly genotype had significantly higher covariate-adjusted aerobic power at baseline than those with Ser49Ser and Ser49Gly(P< 0.05). Adjusted aerobic power at baseline was highest in the Ser49-Gly389/Gly49-Gly389 and Gly49-Arg389/Gly49-Arg389 haplotype combinations. Aerobic power increased significantly(P< 0.001) with physical training. There was no association with the effect of physical training. Conclusion: Ser49Gly and haplotype combinations of Ser49Gly and Gly389Arg of the β 1AR gene are associated with aerobic power, but not with the response to physical training in patients with CAD included in the CAREGENE study.

Study of spatial distribution of sandy desertification in North China in recent 10 years

Sandy desertification is a land degradation characterized by wind erosion, mainly resulted from the excessive human activities in arid, semiarid and part of sub-humid regions in North China. It is one of main kinds of desertification/land degradation as well as water-soil erosion and salinization in China. Rapid and continuous spread of sandy desertification during last 50 years has created a major environmental and socio-economic problem in North China. Remote sensing monitored results in 2000 showed that the sandy desertified land area has been 38.57× 104 km2. The area of potential to slightly sandy desertified land is 13.93× 104 km2, moderately land 9.977×104 km2, severely land 7.909 ×104 km2 and very severely land 6.756×104 km2. Sandy desertification mainly occurs in the semi-arid mixed farming-grazing zone and its northern rangeland zone, semi-arid dryland rainfed cropping zone and arid oasis-desert margin zone. The average annually developmental rate of sandy desertified land increased from 2,100 km2 ·a-1 in 1976-1988 to 3,600 km2 · a-1 in 1988-2000. The basic status of sandy desertification in North China is 'overall deterioration, while local rehabilitation'. Already achieved rehabilitation results and monitoring assessment show that about 60% of desertified land in North China can be restored under the conditions of rational land-use ways and intensity.

Lithium–sulfur batteries are one of the attractive next-generation energy storage systems owing to theienvironmental friendliness,low cost,and high specific energy ***,the low electrical conductivity of sulfur,shuttling of soluble intermediate polysulfides between electrodes,and low capacitretention have hampered their commercial *** address these issues,we use a halloysitemodulated(H-M)separator in a lithium–sulfur battery to mitigate the shuttling *** H-M separator acts as a mutual Coulombic repulsion in lithium-sulfur batteries,thereby selectively permitting Lions and efficiently suppressing the transfer of undesired lithium polysulfides to the Li anode sideMoreover,the use of halloysite switches the surface of the separator from hydrophobic to hydrophilicconsequently improving the electrolyte wettability and adhesion between the separator and cathodeWhen sulfur-multi-walled carbon nanotube(S-MWCNT)composites are used as cathode active materialsa lithium–sulfur battery with an H-M separator exhibits first discharge and charge capacities of 1587 an1527 m Ah g-1,***,there is a consistent capacity retention up to 100 cyclesAccordingly,our approach demonstrates an economical and easily accessible strategy for commercialization of lithium–sulfur batteries.

Increasing demand for real-time healthcare monitoring is leading to advances in thin and flexible optoelectronic device-based wearable pulse *** previous studies have used OLEDs for this purpose,but did not consider the side effects of broad full-width half-maximum(FWHM)characteristics and single *** this study,we performed SpO_(2)measurement using a fiber-based quantum-dot pulse oximetry(FQPO)system capable of mass production with a transferable encapsulation technique,and a narrow FWHM of about 30 *** on analyses we determined that uniform angular narrow FWHM-based light sources are important for accurate SpO_(2)measurements through multi-layer structures and human skin *** FQPO was shown to have improved photoplethysmogram(PPG)signal sensitivity with no waveguide-mode noise signal,as is typically generated when using a single substrate(30–50%).We successfully demonstrate improved SpO_(2)measurement accuracy as well as all-in-one clothing-type pulse oximetry with FQPO.
